American Flag Dessert Idea
Strawberry Pretzel Salad FOR THE 4TH OF JULY
Last weekend, we headed over to the neighbor’s house for a bounce house and pool day with all the kids. I had just made this recipe to shoot photos for the blog, and it worked out perfectly—I brought it over for everyone to enjoy, and it was a total hit! I love how quick and easy it is to make, and the combo of strawberries, cream, and buttery, salty pretzels is the perfect balance of sweet and salty.
I already have this recipe up on my blog, but this time I made a few fun twists—homemade whipped cream and a festive American flag design for the perfect patriotic dessert!

History of the Famous Strawberry Dessert Salad
Did you grow up eating this famous dessert?
Where I’m from in the Midwest, everyone grew up with Strawberry Pretzel Dessert. It was a staple at family gatherings, potlucks, and church events—and I think it was pretty popular in parts of the Southeast too. This dish really had its heyday in the 1970s and 1980s, so a lot of our parents grew up eating it as well. For many, it’s deeply nostalgic. Anytime I take a bite, I instantly think of Christmas dinners (yes, my mom made this every Christmas!), summer get-togethers, and sneaking spoonfuls while it chilled in the fridge.
This recipe showed up in nearly every church and community cookbook back in the day, especially during the “Jell-O era.” I actually have a collection of about 25 vintage Better Homes and Gardens cookbooks that I picked up at an antique shop a few years ago—and I’d say at least 25% of the dessert recipes feature Jell-O! It was the “Jell-O Bloom” era, when gelatin-based recipes were seen as modern, colorful, and convenient—perfect for busy homemakers in the postwar years.

More Recipes to LOVE:
I love recreating the American flag on dessert recipes—it’s such a fun and festive touch! You can easily do this with cake recipes too. My banana bread bars, olive oil cake, chocolate olive oil cake, and even scotcharoos (another midwest staple!) would all make great bases for a patriotic flag design on top!
How to make this recipe stand out from all the other Strawberry Pretzel Salad Desserts? Make your whipped topped homemade:
How to Make Homemade Whipped Cream
You’ll never buy the store-bought ever again!
Homemade Whipped Cream:
In a stand mixer or using a hand mixer, beat the heavy cream on high speed for about 3 minutes, or until it begins to thicken. Add 1/4 cup of sugar and the vanilla extract. Continue beating until soft peaks form and the whipped cream is light, fluffy, and holds its shape.

How to Make Dye-Free Jello Super Red:
When mixing your dye-free Jello packet with the frozen strawberry halves, add a few drops of dye-free red food coloring to boost the color. If you have freeze-dried strawberries on hand, crush and mix them in as well—they naturally enhance the red hue and add extra flavor!

Strawberry Dessert Salad can be made with almost any fruit!
have you tried the peach version yet?
This is one of my favorite ways to use up extra strawberries after strawberry-picking season! You can slice and freeze the berries ahead of time, making this dessert even easier to throw together. It’s also a great recipe to adapt for blueberry, peach, or cherry season—just swap the strawberries for almost any frozen fruit. I’ve made a peach version before, and this summer I’m planning to try it with blackberries!

American Flag Toppings
- 12 Ounces Whipped Cream Topping Or homemade
- 1 Cup Fresh Blueberries
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F.
- Prepare the Jell-O: In a large bowl, dissolve the strawberry Jell-O in 2 cups of boiling water. Stir in the frozen strawberry halves (no need to thaw). Place the bowl in the refrigerator to chill for about 20-30 minutes, until it begins to firm up slightly. (check frequently as you do not want it to completely set)
- Make the crust: Crush the pretzels (see photos for texture reference). In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the butter. Stir in the 1/3 cup of sugar, then add the crushed pretzels and mix until fully coated.Press the pretzel mixture evenly into the bottom of a 9×13-inch baking dish.Bake for 10-12 minutes, then remove and let cool completely. You can place it in the fridge to speed up the cooling process if your Jell-O is starting to firm.
- Make the creamy filling: Using a hand mixer or stand mixer, beat the cream cheese with 1 cup of sugar on high speed until smooth and no lumps remain.Fold in the whipped topping until the mixture is creamy and well combined.
- Assemble the layers: Once the pretzel crust is completely cooled, spread the cream cheese mixture evenly over it, making sure to seal the edges.Gently pour the semi-set Jell-O and strawberry mixture over the creamy layer.
- Refrigerate the dessert for 1-3 hours, or until fully set.
- Decorate: Before serving, use whipped cream topping and blueberries to design an American flag on top for a festive, patriotic finish!
Notes
In a stand mixer or using a hand mixer, beat the heavy cream on high speed for about 3 minutes, or until it begins to thicken. Add 1/4 cup of sugar and the vanilla extract. Continue beating until soft peaks form and the whipped cream is light, fluffy, and holds its shape.

Childhood Recipes for Nostalgic Feels:
There’s something so nostalgic and joyful about throwing summer parties with patriotic food. Maybe it’s the childhood memories of sparklers, BBQs, and red-white-and-blue desserts, hotdogs, burgers—but it just feels like the heart of summer. I love getting creative with classic recipes, adding festive touches like American flag designs or star-shaped fruit, and watching everyone gather around with full plates and happy hearts. It’s simple, sentimental, and something I look forward to every year. My mom was always a big 4th of July fan, but it took me until I was in my adult age to really love the nostalgic feel of summer holidays.
