What are Monster Cookies?

Monster cookies are soft, chewy cookies made with peanut butter, oats, chocolate chips, and colorful candy-coated chocolates. They’re a fun sweet treat that combines the best parts of peanut butter cookies, oatmeal cookies, and chocolate chip cookies all in one!

Monster cookies are typically not gluten-free or dairy-free, but healthier versions, like my recipe, use wholesome ingredients such as almond flour, organic peanut butter, and maple syrup for sweetness. This version is perfect for those looking for a more nutritious take on the classic cookie while still keeping the delicious flavor and texture everyone loves.

Monster Cookies are a Childhood Classic!

I never want to deprive my toddler of the foods he loves, but if I can give him a healthier option without him even noticing, I’m absolutely doing it! It’s a win-win—he gets a treat he’s excited about, and I feel good knowing it’s made with wholesome ingredients that add nutritional value.

Kids LOVE this heathy cookie recipe!

Not only were these a hit with my son. He was literally chasing me around the house for one while I was trying to take pictures (hence why the twelfth cookie is missing in the photos) but they were also a success with my neighbor’s kids! I made a second batch to share, and she texted me later saying her kids LOVED them and needed for the recipe.

But let’s be honest, these cookies aren’t just for kids. I absolutely loved having mine for breakfast with my cappuccino. Whoever said cookies are just for dessert was seriously mistaken. When you have healthy cookies like these, they’re the perfect snack (or meal) any time of the day!

The Importance of Dye Free Foods for Kids:

Giving my son foods without artificial dyes is very important to me, and I avoid them whenever I can. I won’t be the helicopter mom at school or birthday parties when everyone else is eating it, but I won’t buy it or put it in my house. I also try my best not to make it a big deal around him, but I love that there are so many healthier alternatives to artificial dyes these days. It really gives me peace of mind.

As a parent, I feel better knowing I’m giving my kids cleaner, safer foods without unnecessary additives. I think moderation is key, but I truly believe that the foods I grew up eating had an effect on me, and I’m doing everything I can to guide my son toward healthier eating habits. Again, he won’t have any idea I’m doing it, but my blog is a safe space for me to say it out loud, just not in front of him.

Here’s Why You May LOVE These Healthier Monster Cookies:

  1. Gluten-Free – Made with almond flour and oats, they’re a great option for those avoiding gluten, without compromising on texture or flavor.
  2. Dairy-Free – Perfect for those with dairy sensitivities or allergies, ensuring everyone can enjoy a treat.
  3. No Refined Sugar – The cookie dough is sweetened naturally with maple syrup, these cookies offer a more nutritious alternative to those loaded with refined sugars. (want to go completely refined sugar free? use sugar free chocolate chips, and replace the candied chocolates with nuts!)
  4. Protein-Packed – The peanut butter and eggs provide healthy protein, which is great for growing bodies and keeps you feeling fuller for longer.
  5. Healthy Fats – With peanut butter and almond flour, these cookies contain heart-healthy fats that are good for overall health.
  6. Whole Grains – The oats provide fiber and essential nutrients, making them a filling, energy-boosting treat.
  7. No Artificial Dyes or Additives – By avoiding artificial dyes and relying on natural ingredients, these cookies are cleaner and free from unnecessary chemicals.
  8. Easy to Customize – You can add nutrient-dense ingredients like walnuts or chia seeds to further boost the nutritional value.

How to Make Healthy Monster Cookies:

Combine dry ingredients: In a mixing bowl, combine the oats, almond flour, salt, and baking soda.

Add wet ingredients: Mix in the egg, vanilla, maple syrup, and peanut butter until well combined.

Add mix-ins: Fold in the chocolate chunks.

Form cookies: Weigh out the cookie dough into 70-gram portions, and place them about 2 inches apart on a lined parchment baking sheet. Roll the dough into balls and gently press them down into cookie shapes. Note that the cookies won’t spread too much during baking.

Top with candy: Add a few candy-coated chocolates on top of each cookie.

Bake: Bake at 350 degrees for 10-11 minutes, or until golden brown around the edges. Allow the cookies to cool on the pan before eating!

How to Store Healthy Monster Cookies:

I like to store these cookies in the freezer. They stay extra chewy in the center and perfect in the morning with a cup of coffee! Plus, if I leave them out on the counter, I eat too many of them. When I do leave them out on the counter, I keep them in a sealed ziplock bag, or in my glass dessert case!

The Cutest Special Occasion Cookies:

These cookies are perfect for any time of the year, and they’d be especially fun for special occasions like Valentine’s Day, Easter, and birthdays!

For Valentine’s Day, you could use heart-shaped sprinkles or pink and red dye-free candy-coated chocolates to give them a festive touch.

For Easter, I love the idea of using Trader Joe’s almond Cadbury egg candy and they’d be a fun twist for the holiday and add a sweet touch of springtime! You could also mix in pastel-colored sprinkles to make them look like little pieces of confetti, which is perfect for any celebration.

For birthdays, you can customize them with birthday-themed sprinkles or even add a mix of colorful candy pieces for a festive and fun look.

I think this recipe is going to become a year-round favorite There’s no wrong time to enjoy a healthy, delicious monster cookie!

Very quick to put together. I put the dough in the fridge to bake later which made the dough hard to use but still tasted great

    1. Hi, Amy!

You can always shape the cookies before putting the dough into the fridge, take them out and let them sit at room temp for a bit, and that’l work better than working with the cold dough 🙂
