Every time I turn on the blender to make my protein shake, my dog gives me those puppy eyes. I know he is wondering where his treat is. Grumples is a very shaggy dog and gets very hot after our long walks together. I wanted to create a light treat he could enjoy after walks as a reward, and so I talked to my vet about foods that are healthy for dogs.
She wrote down a list of “people foods” that are safe and healthy for dogs. I chose several off the list and added them to the blender. I chose Greek yogurt because of the calcium and protein. Make sure to use a plain yogurt that contains little sugar as possible. I was pleased to see bananas on her list because my dog loves them. Bananas are beneficial for dogs skin and fur. They also help with prevention of old age related diseases. Even though bananas are healthy for dogs they need to be given in small amounts and not every day. To make the shake more icy, freeze the bananas before hand. If you freeze them, you may not even need to add ice to the shake. Last food I chose off the list was a boiled egg. Eggs are good for dogs because of digestible protein. It’s important to make sure the egg is completely cooked. Eating raw eggs is dangerous to people and dogs are no different. The egg shell is surprising healthy for dogs so I added it to the blender as well. If you don’t have a powerful blender, I don’t recommend adding the shell.
As you can see this dessert was approved by Mr. Grumples. He wouldn’t let me hold the glass. I only got two pictures of the treat before he sniffed it out. He knew right away this was his because it was topped with 3 of his dog food pieces. Watching him devour this treat was so entertaining. I was going to put it in a little bowl for him but he insisted on eating from the cup. His nose was too big to fit, but his tongue was surly long enough to reach the bottom.
This treat was before a light walk. I wouldn’t recommend treating your dog before an intense exercise because it could upset their stomach. Sometimes we do treats like this after long walks too. A treat like this should only be a once a week treat. I always feel really sorry for the dogs chained up in the backyard. I know they are content but dogs need at least 2 hours of exercise a day, especially the bigger breeds. Letting your dog out in the backyard doesn’t count as exercise. Go out and play catch with them or take them for a walk. Exercise builds a better relationship between you and your dog, it also makes them stronger and less prone to diseases. Doing things with your dog shows that you love and care about them. If you are going to keep your dog chained up in the backyard, what’s the point? Grab a bottle of water and take them out for a walk!

My dog sustained a serious assault on her liver last year. She is almost fully recovered… maybe one more year. Anyway, another yummy recipe that my vet has had her on is 1 part boiled chicken breast, one part rice, one part vanilla ensure. Blend it all up! So gross, but dogs seem to love it. Recently, so that she can put on weight, we have added a tablespoon of tuna in oil. Blegh!! The things we do for our fur babies!

So glad your fur baby is ok!! I bet dogs love that and I know grumps loves rice and chicken, especially when he’s sick.
