Healthy Double Chocolate Cookies with Almond Flour Recipe
Double Chocolate Chip Cookies with Almond Flour | Healthy Dessert Recipe
A few days ago, after my son’s first day of school, we had lunch at his favorite restaurant. On our way out, we stopped by a bakery, where he kept asking for a chocolate cookie! He loved the cookie, so I had the idea to go home and make some healthier ones to keep in the house for him. So, we whipped up these delicious almond flour chocolate cookies for our afternoon activity. He loves getting involved with baking, and it gives us something to do together.
They’re a twist on my blog’s classic almond chocolate chip cookie recipe, and we’ve been making them nonstop this week. My favorite version of this recipe includes pecans, dates, and dark chocolate chips!

These are exactly the kind of cookies I love to bake because they’re super simple! You toss all the ingredients into one bowl, mix it up, form the dough into balls, and pop them in the oven. There is no need for electric mixers or multiple bowls. We like to keep a stash in the freezer, and the best part is they stay incredibly chewy straight out of the freezer! Perfect for a quick, healthy treat anytime.
Why You’ll Love This Recipe:
- Freezer-friendly: You can make a big batch and store them in the freezer for an easy treat anytime!
- It’s super customizable. Swap in your favorite nuts, dried fruits, or chocolate varieties to make it your own.
- Nutrient-dense ingredients: Packed with wholesome ingredients like almond flour, dates, and pecans for a healthier snack.
- Kid-approved: Toddlers and kids love these cookies, making them a great family-friendly option.
- Perfect for sweet cravings: Satisfy your sweet tooth without going overboard on sugar.
- Quick and easy: Minimal prep and ready in under 30 minutes!
- Allergy-friendly: Naturally gluten-free, dairy-free, and with no added refined sugar.

Pecans

Chocolate Almond Flour Cookie Ingredient Substitutes
- Almond Flour: Swap with coconut flour, but you may need to add extra coconut oil if the dough feels too crumbly.
- Unsweetened Cocoa Powder: If you’re not a fan of cocoa powder, try making my regular almond flour chocolate chip cookies instead!
- Egg: Use a flaxseed “egg” by mixing 1 tablespoon of flaxseed with 3 tablespoons of water.
- Coconut Oil: Substitute with butter.
- Vanilla: Try almond extract, peanut butter, or a pinch of cinnamon.
- Honey: Replace with maple syrup, date syrup, agave, or even brown sugar.
- Dark Chocolate Chips: Use any type of baking chips, milk chocolate, white chocolate, or semi-sweet!
- Dates: Omit them or replace with raisins, cranberries, or dried blueberries for a fruity touch.
- Pecans: Add any type of nuts: walnuts, almonds, or hazelnuts all work!
We have a similar peanut butter cookie recipe that uses almond flour, and I’m thinking of trying it with cocoa powder next time to create a chocolate peanut butter almond flour cookie. You can’t go wrong with a chocolate peanut butter dessert.

I love making desserts that are healthy, especially when my toddler thinks he’s sneaking something decadent and sweet! We’ve started calling these “dirt cookies” because he’s obsessed with being outside digging in the dirt. The other day, he asked, “Mama, dirt cookies!” and it just stuck. Now it’s our special name for them!
KID-FRIENDLY NOTE:
This is a kid-friendly cookie recipe, but keep in mind that cocoa powder contains traces of caffeine, so it should be consumed in moderation. If you’d like to reduce the cocoa powder, you can cut it in half and substitute it with ½ cup of coconut flour, extra almond flour, gluten-free flour, or all-purpose flour.
These cookies are SUPER chewy, with crispy edges and the perfect amount of chocolatey goodness! The added dates make them even chewier and pair so well with the cocoa powder. You’d never guess that they were healthier.
I will definitely be making a fall version of these with pumpkin, cranberry, and white chocolate chips! Stay tuned for that one.

Is there anything better than a happy kid covered in chocolate and dirt?

I know that almond flour can be pretty pricy, but I find mine at Costco and Walmart for a very good price compared to the average grocery store.
I love getting my son involved in cooking. Not only does it keep him entertained and allow me to actually get recipes done, but it’s also great for his motor skills and learning to follow directions. It boosts his confidence and encourages a love for cooking that I hope stays with him throughout his life. Plus, it’s a much better option than putting him in front of a screen while I cook! He also LOVES helping with clean-up, especially putting utensils in the dishwasher. It’s just a fun and delicious activity for both of us! People often ask me how I get anything done with him at home, but I try to involve him as much as possible.
The centers of these cookies are chewy and fudgy like brownies, but crispy and crunchy not he bottom and around the edges like a double chocolate cookie.
I am so excited for you to try these healthier double chocolate chip cookies! They really are so delicious and perfect for when you want something sweet!

Thank you for always providing substitutions! Baking is such a science and an art and knowing the creator has well-thought-out alternatives that allow for dietary restrictions and allergies is just a chef’s kiss! Can’t wait to try these out today with a flax egg.
I can’t wait to hear what you think!!
I made these as soon as you posted the recipe, and they are wonderful. My family enjoyed them, too. I added a few white chocolate chips and walnuts to mine. I look forward to trying your pumpkin version next. My daughter has a gluten allergy so we are always trying to find good alternatives that taste great.
Awww that is so great to hear!!
yum! Do you have the nutritional information for these cookies?
Oh my goodness!!! These are delicious! Made them for the first time tonight and I love them. The recipe is so easy and turns out amazing. I’d really love to have the nutritional info on these!
Thank you, Linda!!!
These cookies are wonderful! Will definitely be a regular for me. Five stars for sure.
Thank you!!!
would love to know the nutritional label
I made these recently and shared them with a friend they are so good!
Thank you, Lisa!!
I tried this recipe using white chocolate chips and cranberries. I will be making again and again!
Tried! Great!
Great recipe! I added coconut oil since my first batch was a bit dry because of the cocoa brand I used
Have baked these twice, both times turned out great. The first time at 15 minutes not quite done, so left in for total 20 minutes, on the verge of too long, the second time 17 minutes seemed to be perfect. Oven temps can vary so keep in mind. We did follow the recipe exactly as written and it was great, on the second batch we added +/- 1/3 cup of shredded coconut and that really turned out great, will definitely keep doing that, the flavor adds to the cookies well. Look forward to trying with some of the other substitutions listed. One note – recipe calls for cocoa powder, we had organic cacao powder on hand and substituted at 1:1 ratio and came out great. I imagine cocoa may be sweeter but with the dark chocolate chips the cacao worked great especially if you prefer a slightly less sweet taste. Great recipe and thanks!
This recipe is delicious!! I traded the dates for a few mini marshmallows and replaced the coconut oil with butter. The cookies were fluffy, chocolately, and tasty! I’m definitely making them again.
Ohh that sounds so good!
My family and I really enjoyed these. Thank you!
Happy you enjoyed!!
These cookies are easy to make and absolutely delicious! Thank you for the recipe!
Glad you loved them, Anna!!
Could you use maple syrup in place of honey? Thanks!
You absolutely can. It would be so delicious and a simple maple cake! I’ve never had any issues with swapping those two natural sweeteners.
These cookies are delish! Great flavor, not overly sweet and gluten free! Thank you Taralynn.
Hi Misty! So glad you enjoyed 🙂
These really are amazing. I made smaller cookies and it did help to refrigerate the dough
The 2nd batch I added an extra date snd cooked only 12 minutes so extra moist.
So glad you love them!!
Great recipe, kids enjoy making these.
Excited to try this recipe, can you substitute the coconut oil with olive oil?
They are in the oven now, so we will see! these have been saved on mh phone to make for months lol I can’t wait! is there somewhere we can find the nutrional information? thank you!
help! they did not flatten out! they are still in a ball after baking them…Anyway advice? lol
Hi, Terra!
Flatten them out before baking! They wont flatten like regular cookies so you’l need to shape them prior 🙂
This is my go to healthy cookie recipe! I’ve made it several times now and it never fails to be tasty and also easy to whip up when I have a sweet tooth. I usually have these ingredients on hand. Actually, I keep dates on hand now mostly for this recipe! I always double the ingredients and also make them a little smaller so I can get more and share with my kids.
Thank you, Carley! I’m so glad you love these! 🙂
