I have no idea what happened. I was out in a t-shirt on Saturday morning for our long run, and then trying my hardest to stay warm during the snowstorm on Sunday morning! The south can be funny.
I woke up around 6 am on Sunday morning. I still have that inner child inside of me, excited to get the first glimpse of the snow, and eager to bundle up and explore. As soon as I made my coffee and walked the dogs, the snow began to fall. If you aren’t up early enough, you’ll miss it. The snow doesn’t last very long here, so I wanted to take it all in before it was gone.
Becca and I had a gym date planned, so I picked her up, and we decided to run a couple of miles outside first. I was in a rush to go, so I didn’t brush my hair or even bother to match my gym clothes. Wait, I never do that anyways…
It was a winter wonderland in Charlotte, and hardly anyone was out. People usually don’t mess with the snow down here because they aren’t used to it. Being from Iowa, this was nothing. I’m also pretty sure that half the younger Charlotte population had no idea it even snowed. It melted by eleven, and most of them were still hung over and sleeping from Saturday’s St. Patrick’s day pub crawl.
When we left the gym, all of the snow had melted. We grabbed coffee and breakfast at Zada Janes and then went about our days. I will have a full weekly recap ready for you tomorrow.
I hope you all enjoy my snow day photos! xo
And yes, this is the same day! It melted an hour later.
Questions for you!
- Does your inner child come out during a snowfall?
- Does it snow alot where you are from?
- What is your favorite snowday activity?
Allie says
1. Yes I love it! But being from South Dakota, we get snow all the time! So I mostly enjoy it before Christmas. 🙂
2. I’m from Southeastern South Dakota, and yes it just snowed here last night- I couldn’t even get to the small town where I student teach!
3. I love sledding- totally a kid at heart! But I also love baking when the snow is coming down!
Taralynn McNitt says
I usually only like it before Christmas, but I KNOW this is it’s last stop!
I hope it slows down there soon! We could all use a little sunshine!
LOL YES, and I havnet gone in so long!
Jacqui says
That’s nuts! It takes forever to melt up here in Philly and we’re expecting over a foot of it tonight AHhhh! BTW – LOVE your sneakers, can I ask which Nike’s they are? 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
PLEASE STAY SAFE!
I will post the model in the recap tomorrow

Your photos of snow are beautiful. I live in Buffalo and its always snowy/cold here….its even snowing right now. I definitely don’t appreciate it as much as I would if it only happened once in a while. I am ready for it to be warm outside again!
Taralynn McNitt says
I was ready for it to be warm out literally an hour after being in it! It’s fun for an hour! I hope summer comes soon!
Jenn says
You had the best of both worlds – snow that went away quickly!
1. I used to love snow days when I was little, but I think now that I have to clean it up, not so much haha.
2. I’m in NYC now, and we’re supposed to get a huge blizzard starting tonight! Since I just moved back here from Florida (I grew up on Long Island and spent the last 5 years in the heat), I’m not sure how to deal with it. Do you have any advice for walking a dog in it? I have a little jacket for my dog, but she’s never really been in snow before and I’m worried about her.
3. I took a snow day for tomorrow just in case it’s bad (they’re forecasting us to get a foot or more, but I hope it’s nothing that bad), and I plan on making pancakes and hot cocoa with my roommates. When I was little, my mom used to make us pancakes so we had something hot to eat after we made snowmen. I don’t know if my “yard” is big enough for playing in the snow this time, but I’ll try 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
Lol seriously!
I only like them because they are rare here.
Please stay safe in that blizzard!!!!When I was living in the midwest with Grumples, I used to wrap his paws in bags or t-shirts so the salt and snow didn’t hurt him! They are fine in the snow for about fifteen to ten minutes but protect the paws. You can buy boots, but dogs hate them.
Sounds like you have a fun day planned and I love that youre making the best of the snow day!!
Jenn says
Wrapping the paws is a great idea! My mom keeps telling me to get boots but I know she won’t wear them. Thanks for the advice! 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
Definitely a waste of money! They’ll just bite the off!
Carly says
HI Jen! Try musher’s wax for the paws! I protects them from the salt and ice and the dogs don’t hate it as much as dog booties! like this… https://www.amazon.com/Mushers-Secret-Pet-Protection-200-Gram/dp/B0002XIZXY
Carly says
Your snow day pictures are beautiful! Can’t believe that last picture is the SAME day! :O
My inner child coming out with the snow depends what is happening that day. If I have errands or my husband has to work then its all adulating with the snow… shoveling planning driving in it etc. But if its a REAL snow day I ignore any snow removal and bundle up and go and play in it until I’m soaked or frozen!
I thought it was about to be spring last week with 60 degrees and sunshine. But the weather man told me this morning to expect 18 – 24 inches of snow tomorrow… So I guess you could say YES so much snow! (we’re north of Boston).
Nor-easter’s kill us here sometimes!
I love just being out in the snow while the rest of the world is still asleep. It seems to add another level of peaceful-ness! Or throwing snowballs for my pup Moose who is OBSESSED with snow!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi Carly!
Lol it’s crazy how fast it melts here!!
We never get enough to have to shovel. By the time I’d finish shoveling, it would be melted lol
It’s going to be COLD where you live! STAY SAFE & WARM! Luckily we have 80’s coming next week!
laura says
Taralynn, what style are those nike shoes youre wearing? 🙂

Hillary Danielle says
I only like snow, when I don’t have to go out in it. I hate when my travel time to work goes from the regular 30 minute drive to 45-60 minutes. (I take an alternate route that I KNOW gets salted and plowed regularly, but travel is also slower.)
I like in Ohio, and where I grew up, about a half hour South of Cleveland, I used to get a lot of snow, due to the lake effect. Now that I live about 2.5 hours South East of there, we get snow, but not as much. Between last year and this year, the snow hasn’t been too bad. It’s usually a days worth, then 2 days later it’s gone. Though, we are supposed to get a “snow storm” starting tonight through tomorrow night, but the amount they were calling for has already dropped dramatically. It was originally calling for 4-6 inches, and now we are down to less than an inch. So we shall see when I wake up in the morning for my morning commute.
I love playing in the snow with my pups. They absolutely love it! Roadie (my terrier mix) loves to follow me as I’m shoveling the driveway in hopes that I will throw snow in the air for her to catch. She’s silly. Bristol (my beagle mix) prefers to just sniff….but she does that all the time, but it’s harder to get her to come inside when the snow is falling.
Taralynn McNitt says
AGREED. Nothing worst than traveling in the snow or having travel plans canceled because of it. So many disastrous stories.
You get so much snow in OHIO! I have family there and it seems like when they get snow THEY REALLY GET SNOW! I grew up in the midwest, so I know how that is! I hope you stay safe in that snow!
YES. I love taking the pups in the snow. It was fun watching Leo’s first snow day.
Charmaine Ng | Architecture & Lifestyle Blog says
Wow, the snow is so beautiful! It doesn’t snow where I live so I’ve only seen snow like, twice in my life. Not complaining though, I can’t take anything below 15ºC! Haha!

Taralynn McNitt says
Hahaha you’re lucky. I like the snow once and a while, but living in snowy conditions would totally be rough! I don’t think I could ever live in the midwest again! BURRRRRRRR
Samantha Staffa says
These are beautiful!!
I’m from Minnesota and the only snowfall I like is the first one that’s usually in November. We got 6 inches yesterday, so I’m kind of over it. I do really like taking my pup out when it freshly snows because she gets so excited to play in it!
Taralynn McNitt says
Thank you!
I usually only like the first snowfall, but we only get like two a year lol
I’m sure youre over it! I was like that when I was living in Iowa and Chicago!
I LOVE taking the dogs out in it!
Hannah Southernwood says
I’m from Texas so snow here is rare….MAYBE once every few years if we are lucky! Pretty much after February it’s “spring” in Texas haha…
I’m 27 and have experienced 3-4 snow days total! When we DO have them it’s a big deal! School would be out & we would spend all day sledding on trash can lids down our hill, making mini snow men, and drinking hot chocolate!
I think the last snow day I experience was 6 years ago!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hahaha us too, but the random snow comes during our spring! ANNNNNNOYING. Makes my running schedule hard.
So when snow comes, you must appreciate them so much more! I think we had that much snow a week while living in the midwest.
six years ago!??!?!?! what.
Carrie this fit chick says
WOW, that snow is beautiful! Especially with all the trees!! It was the opposite over here in CA– sunny and warm in San Francisco- hah! I guess spring came early here and winter is staying late over there. I love sitting by a fire when it’s snowy outside.. I’m not much of a play in the snow kind of gal, but a let’s stay in and be cosy kind of gal!
Taralynn McNitt says
I would totally take some sunny California right now!
I love staying in and being cozy too!:) I open up all the windows and watch the snow fall!
Marisa D says
1. Sadly no..only on Christmas Eve and Christmas!
2. Oh yes! Ohio loves to make sure winter is long and snow falls a lot.
3. Favorite snow day activity is either staying inside watching movies or going tubing!
Taralynn McNitt says
Haha I used to be like that, but there is no chance of snow on Christmas here!
I heard Ohio was getting snow bad. I have family there and I was watching my aunt’s snaps!
TUBING! Ahhhhh haven’t done that since I was a kid. SO FUN.
Jessica says
I live in St. Louis MO and the running joke is that we have every season in a week. Last week was tornados, rain, 70+ degree weather and now two shots of snow Saturday and now this morning. I do love the snow though, my biggest reason is my dog. We have a siberian husky and she lives for the snow. She runs around, rolls in it and eats it.
I loooove your snow pictures. I always think I would love to get out and take pictures of it but that’s when I’m usually headed into work and don’t have time 😛

Taralynn McNitt says
You are having the craziest weather!
Dogs are seriously the best part of snow! I love watching them go crazy and stick their noses in it!
& thank you so much!
Sara says
Woke up to 5 inches of snow here? daydreaming about when I can move! (Finishing school) I haven’t fully decided on a state/city yet but Charlotte N.C. is on the list. Can’t wait for your Charlotte post.
Taralynn McNitt says
It’ll be up soon!!!:) & Charlotte is so wonderful! Where are you moving from?
Arielle says
Hi Tara, did you ever post the “things to do in NC” blogpost you mentioned a while back?! Looking forward to it!
Taralynn McNitt says
Still editing it! 🙂 It’ll be up soon.
Abby says
So jealous! I’m in Missouri, and the snow hit just a little bit south of us. My philosophy is that if it’s cold- there needs to be snow!!
Taralynn McNitt says
I agree 100000000000000%
Izzy | pinch of delight says
These photos are so pretty – unfortunately here in the UK we haven’t had any snow!
Izzy
Taralynn McNitt says
Thank you, Izzy!
Tori says
Wow Taralynn your photography game was ON POINT! I loved all the photos you caught of the snowfall!
1. Yes! I also love to go to my mom’s to get some homemade chicken and dumplings 🙂
2. It rarely snows here in Texas. It will usually just get really icy but no snow to pick up and throw.
3. Fav activity when it snows is to put on my comfy sweats, find a romantic comedy, and enjoy a huge cup of hot chocolate.
Taralynn McNitt says
Thank you, Tori!
OH MY YUM!! That sounds like the perfect snow treat.
We get the same weather. Maybe snow twice a year.
Sounds like a perfect way to enjoy a snow day!
Jessica says
So pretty! My inner child most definitely comes out when it snows, especially around Christmas, but once March/April comes I’m kind of over it, haha! It has been snowing all day today here in Milwaukee, I think we got 8 inches? I love putting on my boots and winter coat and walking out in it – it’s so pretty!
Also, LOVE your leggings and Nikes! I’m in need of a new pair of Nikes, love those. Where are your leggings from?
Thanks!
-Jessica
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi Jessica!
Yes, love a snowy Christmas. We NEVER get that here. It’s usually in the 70’s. Milwaukee is literally a big ball of snow! LOL My friend always sends me snow snaps.
Those are all NIKE! 🙂
Rebecca D. says
Does your inner child come out during a snowfall?
Yes! I love everything about the snow!
Does it snow alot where you are from?
I was born and raised in Wisconsin so yes lol. But I’m now in Arizona so not much snow here. I do live up in the mountains so we do get snow like twice a year but it’s very little and melts an hour later.
What is your favorite snowday activity?
What isn’t my favorite snow day activity!? Bundling up in warm layers, drinking hot chocolate, making snow angels, snowball fights, and walking in the snow.
Taralynn McNitt says
I also went from Midwest to warmer weather! I appreciate it more when it only comes a couple of times year.
Your inner child DOES come out!!
jordan @ dancing for donuts says
i know i shouldn’t complain because living in sunny california is obviously wonderful, but my east-coast heart gets a little bit jealous when i see beautiful winter wonderland photos!! there’s something so magical about the snow when it first falls – enjoy it! 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
There really is something magical when it first falls. I bet you are getting gorgeous weather now though! It’s just cold and wet here today! so yucky.
Brooklyn says
SNOW <3
I'm from Northern Ontario originally so I'm used to -45 weather and being frozen.
Since moving to Vancouver it's only snowed a few times. Every time it does I get SO excited. Snow is just so beautiful.
Your photos are gorgeous!
http://www.justbeinbgrooklyn.com
Taralynn McNitt says
Ontario sounds COLD!!!!!!
& thank you! I agree. Snow is magical 🙂 (when you only have to deal with it a couple hours a year)
Mallory says
I live in Boston and we are getting 12-18 inches tomorrow. Work is already cancelled – work from home it is!
Taralynn McNitt says
Please stay safe in that storm!
Amy says
Beautiful! I loved this post.
Taralynn McNitt says
Thank you, Amy!

Wow! I can’t believe that it was snowing in the morning and sunny in the afternoon. It must be nice though! I wish it would snow where I live, but it is only a dream for now. Pictures are nice though! Thanks for sharing. . .by the way do you have any sightseeing tips on what main attractions to see in N. Carolina?
Taralynn McNitt says
Crazy difference!
Where are you traveling from?
tanya says
S. California and it’s almost 90° and this is winter! ?
Brittany says
I love to watch the snow fall but it gets old after January. I live in New Hampshire and we are currently in for a Nor’Easter after literally off and on temps of 50-60 which is like a spring tease! I’ve never been a snow girl….I prefer my warm days and summer activities of paddleboarding etc.
Taralynn McNitt says
I felt the same way when I was living in the midwest! Now, it’s rare! It’s so weird that it goes from 70 to 20! I also prefer warm activities too!
Shyann says
Your Pictures are absolutely Magical!
I live in South Africa and it has snowed around here (Not my area though) – but it’s rare, usually just mountain tops in the Drakensberg area and surrounds.
I’ve never even seen real life snow, never mind having a snow day!
It’s definitely on my bucket list!
Taralynn McNitt says
Thank you, Shyann!!
I have always wanted to visit South Africa! I bet the snow on the mountain tops are gorgeous.
I can’t believe you’ve never seen real snow! Just visit the U.S. in the winter!:)
Thanks for stopping by!
Tay says
Your photography is amazing.
Taralynn McNitt says
Thank you!!
Harriet says
Wow it’s so beautiful !!! so jealous, I can not wait for winter, it’s only 6 weeks away!! In my small town we don’t get snow at all as we have lots of geothermal activity, so I drive 3 hours to see the snow each year or take a 4hour flight down south.. and yes as soon as I see the snow the inner child comes out! And snow angles appear… then it’s hot chocolate to warm up.. thank you for the amazing photos!! They brighten up my day ❄️☃️
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Harriet!
Thank you! 🙂
I remember when I couldn’t wait for winter and now I can’t wait for summer! I feel like I always want what isnt here.
I can’t believe you drive and fly all that way to see snow! Soooo dedicated.
So glad my photos made your day brighter! xo xo
& have a wonderful week!
Amanda says
Gorgeous photography.
Taralynn McNitt says
Thank you!

I live in Southwest Missouri and we’ve only had a couple of dustings this year….Both times the schools around here were cancelled because they were either expecting more or expecting icy conditions.
I would have loved to get a good snowfall this winter, but it’s not looking promising.
I love snowy days. I like to sled and make snow angels/ snowmen. But I also like just staying warm in the house and watching it come down.
Taralynn McNitt says
The icy part is the worst. I like when it just instantly melts on the roads and dusts the grass.
The best part of snow days is getting cold and then coming in to cozy up with coffee by the fire!
Rachel @ Better LIVIN says
WOW! That’s incredible how fast it melted away!!! I need to head south for the winters like a bird! Or a retiree. 😛
Taralynn McNitt says
I can see why people flock here 😉
Emily Weir says
My inner child does come out when I see snow, but unfortunately that isn’t ever in my own back yard. I don’t think Tampa has seen snow fall since before I was born, but if it was snowing here I’d think it would be a true sign that the world is coming to an end. My favorite snow activity is just walking in it. Everything seems so peaceful and quiet.
Taralynn McNitt says
Hahaha yes! Let’s hope you don’t get any snow! I love the morning snow because of the peacefulness too!
Mira says
Omgosh. Those pants are so cute. Where are they from? I’m from Minnesota and seeing you wearing capris in the snow makes me jealous because it was 12degrees when I left for work today. Ughhh
Taralynn McNitt says
Thanks! They are Nike!
12 degreeeeeeee? NO THANKS.
Amanda says
Lately in Cincinnati, we have been experiencing all four seasons every week. No really, I’m not kidding.
One day it is 68-70 degrees, and the next day it is snowing. It sound so far fetched, but it’s the truth! Just about everyone I know is sick, thanks to Miss Mother Nature!
I like the snow, in that I think it looks pretty, but I hate the cold temps. I’ve never been a “hurry up and head outside to build a snowman” type of kid, I preferred to stay inside and have my mom make me hot chocolate. 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
Us too!!! Hot, Chilly, SNOW!
I don’t know what’s going on with mother nature.
lol that made me laugh! Nothing wrong with watching it from the inside!
Laura says
Pretty pictures! Has anyone ever told you that you look like Hayley Orrantia??
Taralynn McNitt says
No, but I’ll totally take that compliment! 🙂
XO
Ashton Jury says
Sadly no snow for me, (Seal Beach California over here) I have been to the snow but I have never seen snow fall. I want to one day though! It looks absolutely beautiful, I love both yours and Becca’s pictures!! Also I am totally in love with your new Nike’s!
Taralynn McNitt says
You’ve never seen snowfall? You should take a trip to colorado or utah! You must see it!
Linda @ The Fitty says
Does your inner child come out during a snowfall?
Yes! Winter is my second favourite season so I love playing in the snow. I actually hope that spring doesn’t come because it’ll mean mud and rain.
Does it snow alot where you are from?
Not really! Despite living in Canada, global warming has really lessened the snow precipitation these past 5 years. We got a bit of snow on Monday 🙂
What is your favorite snowday activity?
TOBOGGANING!!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hahaha but after spring is SUMMER !!:)
Lol what the heck is that?
Carlee says
I am in the process of moving to Charlotte..any suggestions on neighborhoods to look into for living? We’re wanting to buy a place!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi Carlee!
It ALL depends on where you will be working. Traffic or commute plays a huge role and cost!
Could you give me some background details? What you’d like to spend, type of place youre looking for and where you work?
Kristin says
The snow is so crazy! I live in the Midwest so I’m not always thrilled to see it but my 4 year old was going CRAZY when he saw it coming down yesterday. He’s been dying to make a snowman, we just haven’t had enough this year for him to. That’s the only way I get excited to see it anymore… through his eyes!
Taralynn McNitt says
Awww I bet it’s so fun for him (which makes it fun for you)! Hope you built a snowman 🙂 xo
Lace says
You take great photos!
Taralynn McNitt says
Aww thank you!
Vanessa says
So pretty, especially the pictures with the blossoms in the snow!
Does your inner child come out during a snowfall?
Oh yes, I just run outside as soon as I see snow and jump around and play (sometimes even in my PJs because who needs to get dressed when there is snow) 🙂
Does it snow alot where you are from?
We only get a few snowy days a year in the Netherlands, but no real winter wonderland. It only looks pretty for a day but then starts melting and refreezing to a grey icy layer.
What is your favorite snowday activity?
Long walks, trying to step into all the untouched spots of snow because the sound is great. Also building a snowman!
And unrelated to all this, I want to again say how much I like the challenge. I do so little of it, but so far I did the circuit of the day at least once every day. I’m proud of me for keeping with this 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
They look so cold <3
Hahaha I love that! 🙂
I bet the snow is beautiful (when it snows) in the Netherlands. I’m adding it to my bucketlist.
Untouched snow is the best!
& THANK YOU! I am sore everyday from it! lol
Heather @ Polyglot Jot says
Ugh, I’m so so jealous it was nice and melted by the afternoon. We just got around 7 inches and its staying well below freezing for the next few days so there’s tons of ice everywhere. Now that I’m an adult, snow just makes me angry sadly. I need to move somewhere warm 🙁 I’m ready for Spring time!
Taralynn McNitt says
Ugh the ice is the worse!!! Moving somewhere warm is the best.
Amber says
So jealous you only got a little snow! Here in New York we got 2 feet!
Taralynn McNitt says
I saw that! My aunt, who lives in Upstate NY, sent photos!
shanna says
i hate snow. haha. I used to like it when I was a kid, but it’s just a nuisance anymore. where I live, eastern Washington state, we average around 50 inches a year. we had more than that this year. we went 70+ days with snow on the ground from November through February. ugh, it got old fast. we are having massive amounts of rain and all that snow is finally melting so floods everywhere. roads closed, river closed, houses flooding, etc. it’s a mess. we have a trail here that’s a lot like your riverwalk. it’s flooded and closed in many area. such a pain!
we don’t really have snow days. lol! we have snow weeks. early winter and late spring have the days you encountered where it melts before most people are awake.
I hate winter and this one has really done me in. we didn’t even get the classic Christmas card picturesque days where everything is covered in snow and the sun comes out so it’s all bright and shiny and everything sparkles.
