After driving eight hours in the rain, we had made it to D.C. around 3:45 AM (hence the no sleep photo above.) I was exhausted, but super excited at the same time. I love D.C. so much because there is so much to do and see. It was my friend Becca’s first time in D.C., so we hit the important spots! We drove up on Thursday night after Becca got off work, so we could start our day out early on Friday.
I usually go to Misha’s when I’m in D.C., but my brother and Karlee have been telling me about their new favorite spot, Killer ESP. I decided to change it up and try it out.
The coffee shop was super cute and cozy. I loved the brick wall with all the artwork and the rustic tables.
They also had local pastries, small eats and gelato.
I ordered a flatliner with skim. (4 shots of espresso)
The creamy espresso was mouthwatering. I’m very upset that I went there and I wish I had never tasted their coffee. It was THE BEST espresso drink I have EVER had and I’ve had A LOT of coffee drinks in my lifetime. The espresso was strong, smooth and rich with flavor. I’ll never have a better espresso drink…until I go to D.C. again.
Karlee and I decided to walk Becca down to the waterfront in Old Town Alexandria.
Of course, it’s not like us to NOT stop and take pictures with cool random things.
Alexandria was super cold when we got there. Coming from 80 degree weather, I was not ready for that.
What’s a trip without a coffee pic? or 100 coffee pics…
I loved making Karlee and Becca nervous. They were determined I was going in.
And then a good one finally 🙂
I can’t wait to go back in three weeks! The waterfront is so much fun during the warmer months. I love having wine by the boats.
We hadn’t had breakfast yet, so Becca and I decided to split lunch at Virtue Feed & Grain. We wanted to do little small snacks and meals around D.C.
We ordered the Virtuous salad. It had baby kale, seasonal apples, avocado, roasted pumpkin seeds, blueberries, and pomegranate vinaigrette. We also had guacamole hummus dip, which was really good!
The salad was so fresh and I loved the pomegranate dressing. I don’t know why I don’t make kale salads more. I always stick to romaine lettuce, but I need to change it up. It’s sold at all the farmers markets down here.
One thing I love about D.C. is that everyone takes pride in their flowers. The fall was gorgeous with all the big mums on porches and now all the spring flowers are blooming. Everything is just beautiful in D.C. and I’m mesmerized every time I’m there.
After lunch, we headed to the Metro to meet my brother at the Pentagon for a tour. It was my first time seeing the 9/11 memorial and it was beautiful. If you get the chance to visit D.C., make sure to take the time to stop.
After we spent hours at the Pentagon, we headed to Georgetown. I wanted Becca to see as much as she could in three days! We will be going back again in three weeks for a bike meet up (I’ll blog about that at the end of this post) and she’s coming with! She couldn’t get enough of D.C. and I’m like that every time I’m there.
The Exorcist stairs…
Georgetown reminds me of Hogwarts.
I was blown away at how beautiful the campus was. Georgetown is apparently a huge party school too…we walked through streets of house parties. Of course, we looked a bit too old to party hop 😉
We decided to walk down to Baked and Wired for more coffee and a treat. You can’t go to Georgetown without going to Baked & Wired! We will do the Georgetown Cupcakes next time.
Georgetown reminds me of France.
I ordered a quad skim latte. It was a REALLY good latte, but again…KILLER ESP ruined everything for me.
Becca got a Dirty Chai and said it was amazing!
We also split a gluten-free blondie…it was heaven in your mouth! I’m already craving another one.
We took our coffee by the water and people watched.
After our coffee, we headed to the metro to meet my brother for dinner. Karlee is a nurse and had to work the night shift.
Before dinner, we stopped at Murphy’s pub for a beer. I ate here the first time I ever went to D.C. and they have great food!
For dinner, we went to Red Rocks. If you want good woodfired pizza…this place is it.
We all split a little Caesar salad before pizza.
One pizza had onions and roasted red peppers. The other pizza was half cheese and half pineapple/jalapeño. This pizza was dangerously good. Limiting yourself is super hard.
I slept like a baby on Friday night.
After my morning run on Saturday, I cleaned up and got ready for the day.
Karlee had the day off to explore with Becca and I. We jumped on the metro and headed to the Eastern Market.
Breakfast first!
We went to breakfast at Le Pain Quotidian. It’s right on the corner as you enter the Eastern Market. They’re all over D.C.
They have the freshest foods and so many healthy options. The coffee was amazing too! I love when a breakfast spot has great coffee.
I ordered the 2 egg scramble with a spring salad and fresh fruit.
We had fun trying all the jams and spreads. There were so many on the table. My favorite was the hazelnut.
Karlee ordered the avocado chia toast.
The Eastern Market was really cool for art and souvenirs.
This painting was my favorite. Every time I go through art, it makes me want to start painting again.
The market had tons of fresh produce, local dairy and meats.
We picked up some fresh fruits and veggies before heading back to Alexandria. The honeycrisp apples were to die for!
I also stopped at CVS to pick up some granola snack bars, face wash and icy hot for my knees! We walked 22 miles in three days.
We headed to the Smithsonian Natural History museum after dropping off the produce.
Becca was in heaven at the museums. She studied anthropology.
After the museum, we headed to the monuments to do all the touristy things!
My favorite walkway is between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument.
It’s important to walk up the Lincoln Memorial steps without looking out until you’re at the top. Once you turn around and see the view…it becomes a special moment.
Thinking about all the people who have walked or sat on the Lincoln Memorial steps gives me the chills.
The Almond & Coconut Nut bar was super delicious and a perfect snack for on the go! You can find the Gold Emblem Abound brands at CVS. CVS makes healthy lifestyles super convenient with all of their healthier options 🙂
This cozy basic black & white stripe shirt is from my collection 🙂
We headed to the White House after walking around some of the monuments.
We had to stop and feed the duckies first.
They were so cute and ate right out of our hand.
I still think the White House is much bigger in movies and photos…
We can’t just take a normal picture…
After doing all the touristy things, we headed to Columbia Heights for dinner with my brother and his friends at Meridian Pint.
My brother had been telling us about this restaurant for weeks. Apparently, they have one of the best veggie burgers in D.C. and since Becca and my brother are vegetarians, we went there!
We started with wine and nachos. They had guacamole, cheese, beans, fresh baked chips and sour cream. These nachos are now in my top favorite for nachos.
They had so many yummy options on the menu and a lot of vegetarian options. They topped their burgers with coleslaw, jalapeños, tomatoes, lettuce, and Sriracha. I have to admit, I had a bite and it was pretty good. I would have just went with lettuce, ketchup, and mustard.
I had a house salad with homemade falafel. Their falafel was awesome! 🙂 I also had a couple glasses of Malbec.
My brother and Karlee were so precious…I always have to capture moments like this.
It was so rainy on Sunday morning, but we wanted to go out for breakfast before heading back to the Carolinas.
It wouldn’t be a D.C. trip if I didn’t end it at Table Talk for breakfast.
We all had coffee and split cantaloupe and fresh strawberries.
I ordered bacon and eggs. I’m not a huge home fries fan, but I knew my brother would eat them.
We walked down to Killer ESP so I could get one of their heavenly drinks before we left town.
This is going to be my first stop when I get back!
Speaking of coming back…I want to meet you all next time! My really good friends at Revolution Cycles will be running a guided tour around the monuments and dinner. I will be coming up for the event and hope to see you guys there! It was such a blast the last time I did the monument tour. The views are breathtaking and the bike ride is so fun!
We headed back to the Carolinas around 2pm. We hit some crazy storms but made it home safe:) I bought a MisFit juice and a Kate Bakes bar for an easy road trip lunch.
We also snacked on some CVS’s Gold Emblem Abound Mixed nuts! These were super delicious, inexpensive and the perfect road trip snack.
We made it back to town around 9:20 pm.
I dropped Becca off and picked myself up a Chipotle salad for a late night dinner. I always get lettuce, light beans, light rice, light cheese, extra stir fry veggies, pico, corn salsa, and guacamole.
My parents dropped Grumples off at my place before I got home and I was so happy to see him! 🙂 I had such a great weekend!
It was an exhausting weekend and I had the time of my life!
Questions for you?
- What is something fun you’re going to do this month?
- Do you enjoy all the walking while you’re on trips?
- What is for dinner?
Caitlyn says
Sooo glad you and Becca enjoyed your trip up to D.C. I went about two years back and it was so much fun, next time I go up there I am DEFINITELY going to try some of the coffee places and restaurants that you went to because they look soooooo yummy.
Anyways, onto your questions:
1. something fun I’m going to do is……..start my summer class -____- (*cue sarcastic tone*)lol unfortunately, but thankfully I live in a place where I can go and study on the beach so that makes it a little bit better
2. I love doing a bunch of walking on trips because you don’t even realize that you are getting in a workout because you are having soo much fun sight seeing and enjoying yourself
3. For dinner I had take out food because it is a lazy night tonight ^_^
Taralynn McNitt says
Thanks Caitlyn!
Everything I’ve had in D.C. has been GREAT so far and it’s most of the readers that recommend these places!
Studying by the beach? Sign me up! & congrats to you!
That is exactly how I see it too!
Take out is 100% acceptable. I microwaved some veggie burgers and threw them on a salad. I was just as lazy!
Shannon Parker says
I love seeing all your photos. I hope to try some of those restaurants someday and can’t believe I’ve never been to some of those spots (I’ve lived just outside DC the past 24 years). Did you know there was a mistake in the Lincoln Memorial and you can still find it if you look closely enough?
Let me know if you need any DC suggestions or if you need anything the next time you come up!
1. What is something fun you’re going to do this month? I am going to spend a week with my boyfriend and go sightseeing around MD/VA/DC with him.
2. Do you enjoy all the walking while you’re on trips? I love walking on trips! I try to walk as much as possible and love to photograph all the cool things I find. I have a photo of the lincoln memorial mistake. 😀
3. What is for dinner? I had a homemade salad with chicken.
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi Shannon!
You must try some of those restaurants and if you go through all my other D.C. posts, you’ll find bunches more! I did not know that about the Lincoln Memorial and now I’m going to have to search for it! That is cool 🙂
That is going to be a fun weekend!
Walking is the best! I really need to find that mistake!!
Sounds good!!
Cassie says
Taralynn,
I’m loving your DC posts! I’m going to be visiting DC as well (I think the same time you will be!). Can’t wait to try out these places you’ve been talking about! The pics of Georgetown are gorgeous. I am so excited to explore that area.
I love walking while on trips because it’s sometimes hard to fit in a good work out while vacationing. But by the end of the day I’m always super sore!
I had breakfast for dinner! Veggie omelette 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
Thank you Cassie!
I love going to D.C. so much 🙂 If you go back and read all my other D.C. post, there are tons more things to do/see/eat! 🙂 You’ll LOVE it!
That is the same reason I love it!
BRINNER is the best!
Lauren says
I’ve never had a huge desire to go to DC, but you definitely make it look like a fun city!
1. Something fun I’m doing this month is a beach vacation for my bachelorette party, I can’t wait!
2. I don’t mind walking a lot on trips; I guess I don’t think much about it because I’m usually occupied with wherever I’m going.
3. I had oatmeal for dinner lol. I’ve been doing a meal delivery service to lose weight, and I need to finish the stuff from last week before it goes bad.
Taralynn McNitt says
It really is. At first, I never had the desire to go either! I thought it was going to be all monuments and museums but its so much more. It’s full of character and gorgeous areas!
All the exploring definitely makes you forget about all the steps.
Oatmeal for dinner? I can’t say i’ve never done that…;)
Lena says
If you do buy kale from the Farmer’s Market, wash it well! I’ve gotten it a few times and it is always covered in little worms. Nothing a good scrub doesn’t fix, but a bit disconcerting at first glance. But hey, at least you know that it really is pesticide free!
Taralynn McNitt says
For sure! I usually use the Trader Joe’s veggie wash. 🙂 thanks for the heads up! xo
Kyla says
I love your posts about visiting D.C.! It’s funny because I use to live about 45 minutes away, but never really made it around Georgetown or Alexandria areas much. Your pictures definitely make me want to go back and check everything out! I sure do miss the museums in D.C.!
That is awesome about your next visit to be there for the Revolution Cycles guided tour!! That sounds like so much fun!!
1. I’m so excited to be heading to one of my favorite parks – Fall Creek Falls – this upcoming weekend! I hope the weather is perfect because I will be doing plenty of hiking!
2. I enjoy walking on my trips – especially in historical areas. I sure do miss downtown Charleston S.C.! That was one of my favorite places to go walking around! Of course, I love walking/hiking here in the mountains!
3. Dinner is going to be grilled wild caught tuna steaks and veggies! 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
Thank you Kyla!
If you ever go back, you must go visit those areas. They make you feel like you’re in a different country. The museums are great!
That sounds like a fun weekend!
Downtown Charleston is so much fun! It reminds me a lot of Alexandria. I need to go out there soon.
That sounds like a great dinner!
jenn says
4 shots of espresso? Hot damn that is a flatliner! Lol. Glad you had a good time. My friends and I still bar hop at 30 so you aren’t to old to party 😉
Taralynn McNitt says
Shots shots shots! Lack of sleep will do that to ya! 🙂 But yes it was so much fun. I never feel too old to party, but I’m sure we would have received some stares at the college ones lol
xo
Rachael says
I loveeeee DC to- and love that it’s far enough from Charlotte to feel like a vacation but not so far you can’t go on a whim- I’m headed there Saturday for game 5 of the playoffs, Lets Go Caps!!!
Taralynn McNitt says
That is exactly how I feel about it 🙂 There were so many Cap fans on the metros! Enjoy 🙂
Heather @ Polyglot Jot says
Such great pictures–DC is so amazing! I love all the cute little sections. Every place has its own personality. I’ve never been to Killer ESP before–I cant believe you’re saying its the best espresso youve ever had–this means i need to go there next time!
Taralynn McNitt says
Thank you Heather!
I couldn’t agree more. They definitely have their own character and feel. It’s THE BEST…you MUST! 🙂
Rebecca Dickinson says
Weeee! I love when you post about DC! I am a transplant here and absolutely love it! Next time you visit I definitely would have to recommend checking out A Baked Joint which is Baked & Wired’s sister cafe! Their sandwiches and bites are to die for! Also, Chaia in Georgetown is a place I can see you loving (it’s all veg I believe!) And last but not least, Maketto on H street is really cool, even if you just go for a matcha latte!
Taralynn McNitt says
I will definitely try out A Baked Joint! I’ve never heard of it! 🙂 Where is that located?
Thank you so much for the recommendations! 🙂
Rebecca says
A Baked Joint is in the Chinatown neighborhood, kind of near the National Mall!
Taralynn McNitt says
Thanks!
Cait says
You are such a goofball. I wish I had friends as you, who are positive and inspiring. Thank you for letting us get a glimpse into your life. I don’t know what I would do without your morning blogs. This may seem silly, but you give me a sense of happiness everyday. Please never quit journaling. Sorry if this sounds strange coming from a stranger. I am Cait from Netherlands. My English is OK.
Taralynn McNitt says
Your English is fine! 🙂
I really appreciate your comment and it just made my morning. I don’t plan on leaving the blog and it’s the people like you that motivate me to continue! SO THANK YOU! Have a great week!
xo
Sam Price says
I love seeing you live your life to the fullest. I know breakups are hard, but you look like you are doing much better on your own. Please keeping being an inspiration for the young women going through the same. I crawled under a blanket and didn’t talk to anyone for a week after my breakup. I wish I could have been more like you!
Taralynn McNitt says
Thank you Sam. Your comment about crawling under a blanket made me laugh because I thought of Legally Blonde! We are all in control of our own emotions and I just choose to be happy and move forward! I’m very very happy and can’t wait to see what the future holds for me.
Susie says
When did they break up?
Taralynn McNitt says
Months ago! All good though! 🙂
Jess Loftin says
You dress so effortless, yet I want everything you wear. Keep being you!
D.C. LOOKS FUN!
1. I have a performance at the Charlotte Ballet this month.
2. Walking is the best part of vacation!
3. My mom cooked fresh Caesar salads and lasagna.
Taralynn McNitt says
Thank you Jess! That means a lot!
1. That is so cool!! I’d love to hear more about your performance!!
2. Definitely!
3. WOW! sounds like a good mom! & a delish dinner.
Megan says
Thanks so much for sharing Taralynn! I am sitting with my morning coffee reading this, and I must say, I am now wanting to take a trip to D.C! I love little towns that have character and even though the last time I went to D.C was in middle school many years ago, this DEFINITELY makes me want to go back! Thanks for your blog, I enjoy reading it everyday and you are so inspirational. It reminds me that it IS possible to balance a healthy, active, and FUN lifestyle! 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
Thank you for reading!
D.C. is worth it. I can’t get enough no matter how many times I go. If I didn’t love Charlotte as much, I’d probably move there. The middle school trips don’t do the surrounding areas justice! Thank you for the kind words about my blog!
xo xo Have a great day!
Whtiney says
Ah! looks like so much fun 🙂 Also, you’re black and white striped shirt, I have the same one except it’s a tank top. Those seem to be in style lately. I see them everywhere lol.
1. Nothing planned this month 🙁 gotta finish class and find an actual job other than babysitting lol. But I am going to Indiana in two months 😀
2. Heck yes! Long walks are my thing. I’m not sure what it is but i love walking lol.
3. Dinner has not been planned yet, but I it will most likely involve zucchini lol.
Oh gosh and I love The Exorcist!
Taralynn McNitt says
Thanks Whitney!
Those shirts are super comfortable. 🙂 Black & White stripes are my fave.
1. Indiana will be fun! What is your trip for?
2. Walking is my favorite.
3. Zucchini is going to be in my dinner tonight too!
I do the touristy exorcist shot every time I’m in D.C.!
Whtiney says
I have to watch my uncle’s furry children for a week! So excited. I’m more of a cat person, but I love those dogs so much. And don’t worry. I’d do the same exorcist picture every time too. XD
Have a great week.
Taralynn McNitt says
Glad I’m not the only one!!:) Enjoy cat sitting!
Jennifer says
I love DC!
My honey is taking me to Fogo de Chao in Minneapolis for my early birthday dinner on Saturday! I’ve never been but have heard such good things. I also have Monday off and want to go hiking at Minnehaha falls! There’s so much to do in Minneapolis. So fun! It’s also patio season so… Lots of eating and drinking outside I hope 🙂
I love the walking! That’s one reason why I’m so excited for NYC in June!
Well I took some ground turkey out of the freezer so… I have to figure out what to make with that! Haha
Taralynn McNitt says
DC is great 🙂
That sounds like such a great time and happy early birthday! Hiking is great 🙂 I need to go Saturday!
NYC is full of walking. Make sure to bring your old shoes! They get black 🙂 lol
Ground turkey tacos are the best wrapped in lettuce! Or turkey burgers! I have some recipes on the blog!
Jennifer says
Thanks for the shoe tip! I heard it was dirty, but didn’t know it was THAT dirty. I know exactly what I’m bringing now!
Mmm turkey burgers would be good. I’ll check out your recipes! I’m sure they’re all to die for! (since the meatballs your posted were so delicious)
Taralynn McNitt says
I made the mistake of wearing flip flops once!!!
& thank you! i’m all about grilled turkey burgers with lettuce wraps.
Jessica says
Yes Jennifer, don’t wear flip flops in the city. I live in the tri-state area and go to the city nearly every weekend and flip flops are a no no. I’ve had them come off while running to catch a cab, if it’s raining they slip on and off and you don’t want bear feet touching NYC sidewalks. Sneakers are the best, especially if you’re walking all over as depending on the area you’re in you can have sidewalks, cobble stone, etc.
I hope you enjoy the city and all of it’s sites. If you can, definitely go to the 9-11 memorial. I don’t know where you’re be in the city but if you have time walking over the Brooklyn Bridge is something that’s amazing and on the other side in Brooklyn, underneath the bridge are all different types of food vendors and parks. They are really trying to do up the area of Dumbo (area under the Brooklyn Bridge).
Jennifer says
Thank you so much for the tips! I plan on wearing some cheap sneakers I bought at Target on the way to TN once because I had forgot mine. This way if they end up getting extremely dirty I won’t mind trying to wash them or throwing them away! 9-11 memorial is definitely high on my list, and I’ll try and make it over to the Brooklyn Bridge! 🙂
Vanessa says
So many beautiful pictures! Some of them remind me of the cute Dutch town I live in 🙂
What is something fun you’re going to do this month?
This month my best friend and me will be in our hometown at the same time! We study in different countries and only see each other twice a year, so I really look forward to seeing her again, have fun and just do all kinds of great things.
Do you enjoy all the walking while you’re on trips?
That to me is the best part about city trips 🙂 I love to just walk around without a clear direction and see what I’ll find. Sometimes I take a train to a different city just to explore it for a day. Thats what I love about living in Europe where everything is kinda close by!
What is for dinner?
I’ll make tomato risotto for my housemates, and a friend will contribute with mango yoghurt for dessert. Will be so delicious!
Taralynn McNitt says
I bet your town is beautiful.
That is going to be such a fun reunion. 🙂
I’m so jealous that you live in beautiful Europe!!
Wow…i need to be your housemate! That dinner and dessert sounds wonderful!
Carly says
I love all of your pictures and your stories from your trip! You make me want to visit DC! (if only for the best coffee ever! ha).
This month my best friend from Colorado is coming to visit Boston. I’m excited to spend time with her and play tourist while she is here!
I think walking is the best part of so many trips! I love getting up early and walking around all of the popular attractions when they are empty! Its really the best way to see the sites! And all that walking means you get to taste ALL of the treats the city has to offer right 😛 ha!
My dinner is actually inspired by your post not too long ago! Zucchini pizzas!

Taralynn, first off your pictures are gorgeous they make me want to go to DC tomorrow!! If you don’t mind me asking what type of camera do you use? I just love reading your blog you are such a fun, positive and awesome healthy role model!
1.) For fun this month I am planning my daughters third birthday (still can’t believe she’s 3?!?) We are doing a rustic Rapunzel theme at a local bouncy house room- Not sure who is more excited me or her:)
2.) I LOVE walking on trips and exploring the city, preferably with a cup of strong coffee in hand:)
3.) Dinner tonight is leftover Chicken sweet potato tacos!
Taralynn McNitt says
Thank you Katie! TO be honest, these were all taken with my iPhone! I ended up forgetting my camera’s battery at home because it was plugged into the wall. I use instagram and an app called 1967 to filter them! When I don’t use my phone, I use a Cannon TSI3 🙂
1. 3 is a fun and crazy age!! I bet you just want to freeze time right now! I love your birthday party theme! You are a great mom.
2. You and I would get along great!
3. Everyone is having tacos! lol
Mary says
Is your brother a vegetarian? 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
He is!

I always love, love, love when you recap your D.C. visits! As a DC native and current resident, it’s always fun to see where you land. Love Meridian Pint, Virtue and Killer ESP. I saw your Eastern Market instagram; I love that area and am always around it. Try brunch at either Cava or Due South
(Navy Yard) next time! I left a comment on Saturday on your insta with a recommendation for your next Eastern Market/Barracks Row excursion: Pineapple & Pearls is a coffee MUST. They’re owned by the very famous Roses Luxury and they have the most insane coffee and breakfast sandwiches (they also do a really cool concept tasting menu for their dinner option; a tad pricey but worth it). Everything is marble and pink in the decor and they have a gold espresso machine and are big on their pistachio and almond milk offerings. I think you’d really enjoy it! Hope your next visit is a success 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
Thank you Katie!
You are so lucky to live in D.C. I love it so much and I’m so happy my brother lives there so I can visit. I’m writing those two restaurants down! I LOVE brunch and always looking for a new place.
This comment just made my day! I can’t wait to go back and try ALL of that when I’m there. You had me at Marble and Pink decor!
xo & thank you for taking the time to comment with all of these spots!
Katie says
That is awesome that you’re able to get the best of both worlds by living in the south but being close to your brother in DC! Always happy to recommend and excited for you to try! I think you’ll love them. Thank you for always sharing recipes, workouts and your adventures with us! xo

I have to say, after seeing all your posts about DC, it’s definitely at the top of my “to travel” list! I was in Charlotte for a work trip a couple weeks ago and definitely used places I’ve seen on your blog as a restaurant/coffee suggestion guide. I’ll do the same for DC 😉
1. I’m bringing home a great dane puppy this month! He’s 5 weeks right now and gets to come home memorial day weekend. Excited is an understatement.
2. Yes, unless I haven’t eaten or had coffee beforehand. I tend to get “hangry.”
3. Dinner tonight will be grilled chicken salads. My boyfriend and I have been eating terrible as of late, so we’re trying to eat salads all week haha.
Taralynn McNitt says
Thank you Aleysha!!
I love that you used my blog while you were in Charlotte! 🙂 I really should put a list of things together for what to do in charlotte for the weekend on my blog!
CONGRATS ON YOUR DANE!! that is so exciting. 🙂 THEYRE HUGE! lol
HANGRY is real. lol Snacking is always important.
My morning/half coffee brain read that as “grilled cheese salads”…lol I had to read it again. BUT GRILLED CHICKEN SALADS sound great!
Carly says
Since reading your blog I’ve started to plan a trip *in the unknown future* to Charlotte. I know I’d love to read a post about your favorites to try on a weekend trip to Charlotte! 😉 🙂
Rachel says
Hi Taralynn! I loved this post! I have never visited D.C. and would love to some day. It looks so beautiful there! I am not doing anything fun this month! I just finished my semester for grad school so I have 1 month off before I start my summer session! I really enjoy walking on trips! I recently took a trip to Denver Colorado and was staying downtown. We walked all over downtown. I loved tracking my steps on my Fitbit! Tonight for dinner I was planning on making roast in the crockpot, but I forgot to put it in before work so now I don’t know what I will be eating. Probably leftover soup from yesterday.
Taralynn McNitt says
Thank you Rachel!
D.C is a wonderful city and you should definitely visit! Sounds like you’re going to have a calm and relaxing month! I’ve never been to Denver! I’d like to go there 🙂 Crockpot roast is one of my favorites, at least you can make it tonight! & leftover soup is always better the next day!
Emily says
Hi Taralynn,
I love your blogs and havr been following it for years. You are such a beautiful, inspiring woman. We sure could learn a lot about living from you!
This month I am going Morrell Mushroom hunting with my dad, there popping up nicely here in Iowa. What a nice work out!!! I also get my tonsils out on may 16th 🙁 I’m so worried it’s going to be unbearable.
I like to do lots of walking when I go places. Because I like feeling like I am experiencing life in a different place for a while. My life at homes always the same, it never changes. It’s always fun to explore new things when on a trip and see all the sites.
Tonight we are having Turkey Tacos, my absolute favorite! ! I like them with lots of veggies and Greek yogurt and a little cheese! !
Take care, I look forward to your blogs ♡♡
Taralynn McNitt says
Thank you so much Emily. That means so much to me 🙂
I miss mushroom hunting in Iowa! I would NEVER eat them, but the hunt was always fun. I hope your surgery goes smooth! I remember getting mine out in 6th grade. You’ll need lots of liquids and ice. Just remember that each day, the pain gets better and it’ll be over before you know it! You got this. I’ll keep you in my prayers.
I agree with what you said! I actually wish I could walk more around Charlotte to Explore! It’s more of a driving city.
Turkey tacos are my fave!! We both add the same toppings!
Take care as well!!

Okay, so I am totally digging all your bright colored DC pics. Those are the kind of neighborhoods I love walking through. Looking at houses & picking out my favorites is one simple thing I really love to do.
That bike ride sounds fun. Biking is one of my favorite things, it’s so freeing.
1. Something fun. The BF & I have a weekend backpacking trip planned this weekend. And then later this month my parents are finally meeting the BF’s parents. EEK! My parents don’t live nearby, but it means a lot that they’re driving up to make this happen.
2. Yes, yes, yes. I am so not a sit and lay on the beach kind of girl. I want to hike, walk, bike, kayak, WHATEVER, but I like to be active. If I can walk somewhere on a trip I would always prefer that over driving.
3. I’m heading to Happy Hour after work, so probably some bar munchies followed by a quick stir fry once I get home.
Taralynn McNitt says
Thanks Jessie!!
I do the same thing. I always pick out which ones i’d love living in.
You and your BF are always doing something so adventurous. & GOOD LUCK on the meet up! I can’t wait to hear about it!!!
You are ALWAYS doing something 🙂 I could guess your answer before reading it!
Yum!!

I listen to dc101 on iheart radio, though I live across the country, and your dc posts bring what I hear on the radio – ads and djs talking about things – to life. thank you!
1. um, nothing fun planned. I’m sure something will come up.
2. I don’t take a lot of trips. usually just to seattle and I walk every where. I hate driving as it is, so driving around a big city and not knowing where I was going would give me an anxiety attack. I walk more than most people so walking to and from places isn’t a big deal for me. I even do it my own downtown area. who wants to waste time and gas looking for parking?
3. dinner is a funny story. I had a Mexican-themed dinner planned for cinco de mayo but my friend has invited us to their thing. it’s a jr. livestock show and my daughter wants to see the piggies, so I can’t deny her that fun. anyway, they are doing a big taco dinner there, so I am making all my cinco de mayo things today. tacos on star wars day, I’m sure that’s a thing.
Taralynn McNitt says
1. Start planning girl!:) Even if its something small you should definitely do something for yourself with the kiddos! Maybe a picnic:)
2. Great reason to walk!
3. That sounds like super fun!! That is definitely something you can look forward to!

Hey Taralynn,
I’ve been to DC a lot over the past couple of years as my aunt and uncle have moved there from Florida, my question though is where is this Eastern Market located? I know my way around DC and Georgetown, as that’s where we hang out the most, but have never seen this market. Also, the next time I’m in Georgetown, I’m going to Baked & Wired. It sounds really yummy and if you pasted up Georgetown Cupcakes (I always go there) for Baked & Wired, then i need to try it. Thanks for posting all the restaurants and activities in DC; I need to get my butt down there and explore with my aunt.
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi Jessica!
The Eastern market is so easy to find! You get on a metro and take the line to the “Eastern Market Stop” 🙂 After you exit the metro, it should be directly on your left. You’ll see a group of people walking to it or follow someone with a reusable tote on the metro! Thats what we did 🙂 Baked & Wired has better tasting cupcakes than Georgetown Cupcake, but GT Cupcake is a tourist spot so it’s hyped up. You and your aunt will have so much fun! We go exploring morning to night!
Jessica says
Thanks so much Taralynn for this information. I’m going on my Metro app and looking for this stop. LOL. I can’t wait to explore this market. Now, I can’t wait for Baked & Wired if they have better cupcakes that GT cupcakes.
Taralynn McNitt says
Oh yes! (I actually wasn’t that impressed with GT cupcakes)
Caitlyn @SoDamnGood says
I am planning a trip for memorial day weekend and this was so helpful. Need to get myself one of these espresso’s! Thanks girl
Taralynn McNitt says
That’ll be a fun trip during Memorial Day Weekend!! YOU MUST GET ONE OF THOSE ESPRESSOS & then let me know what you think!
Tia says
Hey Taralynn!
I loved the post! I live right outside of DC but I haven’t lived here long. It’s nice to see posts about it though so I can find new places to explore and try the next time we make a trip into the city. I’m definitely going to find Killer ESP! That espresso looked beautiful. I also have to find Eastern Market for all of that stuff too! So much to do next time I’m there ?
Taralynn McNitt says
Thank you Tia!
I have tons of other D.C. posts with more options as well! Make sure to look those over before you go:) I wish i lived closer to D.C.! You’re so lucky.
Brooklyn says
Every time you do a post on D.C it makes me want to travel there so bad!
It looks like you all had a great time 🙂
Also, those nachos look INSANELY delicious! Yum!

Taralynn McNitt says
You should definitely go! & those nachos were insane.
Stacie says
I live in Columbia Heights! Glad you made it to that neck of the woods on your last trip! 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
I hope to visit there in the day time and explore! Anything I should see?!
Mystic says
Killer ESP is good, but they brew Stumptown which is kind of mainstream and frowned upon by coffee snobs here in DC. You need to try Swing’s! They tend to be the most respected and preferred roaster. They roast all their own beans in-house. I love Swing’s because it is extremely smooth and low-acid!
Taralynn McNitt says
I’d love to try Swing’s. I’m always up for a new coffee shop:)
Emily B says
Gah! Loved this post. I miss DC. Love that city so much! Glad your trip was fun!
1. I am looking forward to starting rehearsals for Shrek the Musical later this month! I auditioned last minute and felt totally unprepared but I somehow landed the role of Princess Fiona! I am super excited and it is going to be a blast!
My husband and I are also heading up to Winnipeg, Manitoba next weekend to celebrate our anniversary. Very excited for a little getaway!
2. When my hubby and I went to DC last August, we logged over 60 miles in our 5 day trip. It was NUTS. But so fun!
3. We had leftover tatortot hotdish. Midwest comfort food at its finest!
Taralynn McNitt says
Thank you Emily!!
CONGRATS on your role!!! I wish i could come watch! You have a very exciting month ahead of you & happy early anniversary!
THAT IS A CRAZY AMOUNT OF WALKING!!
As a midwesterner, I love that!
Emily B says
It was a crazy amount! But we had SUCH a blast doing it!
Marissa says
You look so happy! Are you dating anyone? Please share with us!
Taralynn McNitt says
Well Thank you Marissa!:)
I am not dating anyone as I’m just trying to enjoy life on my own! 😀
Michelle M says
I always love reading about your adventures. It gives me such wanderlust!
1. I am going to Florida at the end of the month to apartment hunt for my new home! I am very excited, but also very nervous at the same time as its 1500 miles from my home/family.
2. I enjoy walking on trips, to an extent (usually when the arches of my feet give out). Living in NYC and walking everywhere has helped me built up an amazing tolerance for walking, but on vacations I always tend to overdo it.
3. Homemade chicken parm!
Taralynn McNitt says
Thank you Michelle!!
You’re moving to Florida? How fun! Moving away from home is always hard at first, but if you give it a chance, you may love it! I moved all around and I loved it. New start 🙂
I’m sure you’ve clocked some amazing walking miles living in the Big Apple!
OH YUM!
Jennifer Arteaga says
I have been to DC like twice. I feel like it is always super cold and windy. I have never had the opportunity to see the sights except for the touristy sights. I live that you always show us the best of a place.
May is my birthday month! May 31st! I know this sounds pathetic but all I want to do is go and see the new Alice and Wonderland Through the looking glass or something like that followed by sushi and margaritas lol.
I do like walking and seeing everything on vacation.
We had tacos last night tonight IDK.
Taralynn McNitt says
DC is super nice and warm in the summer. It was gorgeous in the fall as well. They’re going through the spring showers right now for sure! The touristy sites are still fun, but I love what is hidden around them.
That is not pathetic at all! Happy Birthday Month 🙂 Sushi & Margaritas sound like the perfect combo!
We are have tacos tonight for Cinco De Mayo!
Taylor says
Hi Taralynn!! I just had a major catch up on all of your blog posts and I loved them all! It’s so nice to see you so active and having so much fun. I live in PA and am just a few hours from Washington, DC. You should go visit during their Cherry Blossom Festival! It’s so beautiful but you have to catch them on the right weekend when they are in bloom. I’m going to Toronto in a few weeks and we will be walking a ton. I always make the mistake of wearing uncomfortable shoes so i’m glad to see that you still keep it simple and cute with sneakers. Can I ask where your jacket is from? It looks perfect on keeping you warm but also being light. Happy Cinco De Mayo!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hey Taylor!
Thank you so much 🙂 I’m so excited to do the Cherry Blossom festival next year. I’m sad I missed it this year! I have made that mistake so many times, so I make sure to pack tons of tennis shoes! I don’t care if they look bad with my outfits, I’m all about the comfort!! My jacket was 11.99 on the Target sale rack!! 😀

I’m so jealous- I miss DC! I grew up and went to high school in Arlington!
Your pictures are adorable and that one of you on the metro with the CVS bag, I thought it was your mom!
I started bringing along these homemade chocolate covered almond protein bites on my car trips and they are TO.DIE.FOR. You should try them out for your next adventure! 🙂 http://www.greenpalatelife.com/chocolate-covered-almond-protein-bites/

Hey Girl!
I bet growing up near D.C. was amazing!
I just told my mom you said that (she’s sitting next to me) and she said thanks! lol
THANK YOU FOR THAT RECIPE! love your recipes girl!

I love reading about your trips to DC! We are making our first trip there in July and I cannot wait! I’ve used your blogs to mark down restaurants and coffee houses to try 🙂 We are also doing a Segway Tour to see the monuments! Can’t wait to see you talk more about your trips there and what new restaurants or activities you try. Any must-dos while we are there? Baked and Wired and Georgetown are DEFINITELY already on my list!
Valerie says
1. I’ll be done with school in a couple weeks, so the rest of this month is going to be all about catching up on blogging, DIY projects, work, etc. I’m looking forward to it!
2. It depends. If the weather’s decent and there’s neat stuff to look at or sights to see, then I love it. But if it’s a million degrees out and super boring then I’m not a fan!
3. Good question…I’m at work until 11pm so I think I might eat some quinoa I have in the break room fridge. Kind of forgot to plan for dinner tonight though. Whoops.
Melissa FitzGerald says
Your pics of DC make me want to go there so bad! I haven’t been since the safety patrol trip in 5th grade. I’ll have to make it back one of these days!
1. Nothing too exciting… I just graduate from college next week. 😉
2. I LOVE all of the walking while I’m on trips, and otherwise! I live in Chicago, so I’m totally used to walking. But at least on trips, I’m able to indulge a little bit in food and not feel as guilty since I’m walking it off! Ha.
3. Dinner was leftovers from this BBQ place I went to yesterday. They had a sandwich of purposely burnt brisket ends, which are my favorite part. It was heavenly!
Taralynn McNitt says
You should try to make it out there again! It’s a great place and so so beautiful.
1. Congrats on the graduation!!
2. Walking is great on trips when indulging in favorites!
3. That sounds really really really good!!
Jenny says
Gosh, I love your trip blogs! It totally inspires me to travel more. Your photos are so fun and colorful, just what I needed on a dreary Monday morning!
1. What is something fun you’re going to do this month? Not much going on this month, but I am excited to dog sit for my favorite pooches!
2. Do you enjoy all the walking while you’re on trips? I LOVE exploring on foot, I will happily walk miles and miles to see the sights.
3. What is for dinner? I’ve been doing some amazing kale salads, so probably that with some grilled steak on top.
Taralynn McNitt says
Thank you Jenny!!
🙂
1. Dog sitting is fun. I already miss KONA!
2. Sounds like me!
3. oh yum! I need to try that.
