I know I’m not supposed to “hate” anyone or anything, but it’s really hard not to. I hate her. I hate hate hate her. I more than hate her. I’d rather scrub porta pottys at a summer carnival, eat ten funnel cakes before riding a spinning coaster, or talk politics with fifty old men than see her every month. It’s not like she just pops in to say “hi” or to see how I’m doing. She comes in to destroy my week like Miley Cyrus on the wrecking ball. She gets around a lot and almost every girl knows who she is and hates her too! She overstays her visits and is obnoxious when you’re trying to relax. The worst part? She rubs off on me and makes me want to be mean, bitchy, and cry all at the same time. I’m not surprised that she doesn’t have any friends. She makes me want to eat junk, salt, and more salt. She makes me look bloated and puffy when she’s here and forces me to hide under baggy clothing. Everyone has a different name for her.
You may know her by: Mother nature, Aunt Flow, Miss Rag, Mentalstration, or My Period.
You’ll know she’s here when you hear someone say: “it’s shark week, the painters are here, the crimson wave has arrived, the flood gates have opened, the river is red, I’m on the blob, or the tomato soup has over cooked”.
I know I should do the proper thing and call it my “menstrual cycle”…but it’s my damn period!
Now, if you can relate…this post is for you. Aunt flow ruined my night. I was having a great day and finished off the evening with a date night. We stopped and grabbed a red box on the way home. I was pretty excited about watching the new Tom Hanks movie too! Well…that didn’t happen. I’ve had bad cramps from periods, but last night was different. It felt like someone was inside my body twisting my uterus like a wet rag. I couldn’t do anything to make the pain go away. Jeremy drove up to the Walgreens to pick up a heating pad and ibuprofen.
I can take pain well, but this had me in tears. My dog could sense something was wrong because he crawled up next to me while I huffed and puffed. My cramps were so extreme that I threw up. I was ten minutes away from going to the doctor. But what would I say? “hey I’m having horrible cramps”…they would probably laugh. I tried to do the research last night, but couldn’t focus on anything other than the pain. I just wanted to fall asleep and forget about it. I tried falling asleep but it didn’t work. I noticed it felt better when I stood up, so I ran the hot shower and stood under the water for thirty minutes straight while crying. It helped a lot, but when I got out, I had the chills and continued to fight the pain. I actually thought I was dyeing and texted my parents and told them that I loved them. Feel free to call me overdramatic, but I’m still on my period so I don’t give a sheeeeet. Luckily I fell asleep thirty minutes later from the large Ibuprofen dose.
I woke today feeling fine, but I never want to go through what I experienced last night ever again! So today, I decided to do some research to help me prepare for another painful moment with Aunt Flow. I feel like we all keep this subject to ourselves and act like warriors during the week, but I’m ready to open up about it. Here is what I’ve learned…Oh and by the way, I’ve decided to use Gifs in this post to lighten the topic. I didn’t feel like taking pictures of myself crying, cramping, or eating out of the ice cream tub. Maybe next time.
If you are anything like me, you crave all kinds of food when you are on your period. I could live off of dark chocolate and potato chips. Sometimes I make dark chocolate potato chips. Even though we crave all kinds of foods, they may not be helping our cramps at all! Here are some foods that great for that time of month.
*Fruits & Vegetables: Apparently the sugar from fruit helps us cut the bad sugar cravings. (source)
*Drink Tons of Water: Water retention is because our bodies are afraid of dehydration during our periods. The more water your body gets, the less you bloat! (source)
*Vitamin E: It can help your PMS symptoms and lord knows I need that! (source)
-tofu, almonds, sunflower seeds, shrimp, avocado, plant oils, broccoli, and squash!
*Vitamin B6: Can help you with bloating and moods. I’ll keep that in mind!(source)
-sunflower seeds, pistachios, fish, turkey, chicken, pork, sirloin, dried fruit, spinach, bananas, avocados and potatoes!
*Leafy Greens, Legumes, & Red Meat: For Iron! I take an iron supplement, but try to eat more because I have anemia.
*Fish & Eggs: Try to get foods high in Omega-3 because it’ll relax the muscles and reduce cramps. Note to self!
*Whole Grains: The carbs will make you feel fuller and keep you from diving into the bag of potato chips or candy jar. (source)
*Avoid Caffeine (Nooooooooo) Apparently caffeine makes your mood, cramps, and bloating worse worse worse! 🙁 Maybe that’s my problem. I just love coffee so much.
They hurt so bad! I just don’t understand how a little blood squeezing through a cervix can feel like someone punching out my insides! Thank god for google. It always has the answers. Each month our lining prepares itself for pregnancy. Eventually it swells and sheds while the body prepares itself to make a new one each month.
“Menstrual cramps are caused by the uterine contractions that occur in response to prostaglandins and other chemicals. The cramping sensation is intensified when clots or pieces of bloody tissue from the lining of the uterus pass through the cervix, especially if a woman’s cervical canal is narrow.”-SOURCE
When I get excruciating cramps, I use Ibuprofen and the heating pad! Warm baths help, too!
Exercising is the LAST thing I want to do when I’m on my period. I feel like crying alone in my room, lifting chocolates into my mouth, and taking hot baths. But…exercises does help the situation. Endorphins are like the all natural human morphine. You get them from exercise and these endorphins help burn the chemicals released during menstruation that cause muscle contractions. (-Source)
Getting the heart rate up is great! Go out and do aerobics, play a sport, jog, walk, or swim. But just don’t swim in the ocean. It’s shark week. I’m not a huge yogi, but i’ve heard yoga helps a lot with cramps. Breathing and stretching exercises help you relax and feel calm. Not only does the exercise help with cramps, it helps with our emotions…and we all know those are high during our week. I usually cry watching Lifetime movies.
If you haven’t noticed, guys do not understand PMS and they never will. They are quick to say we are “pmsing” but have no idea how it actually feels like. Whenever my boyfriend calls out the PMS, all hell breaks lose. OH NO HE DIDNT! But…seriously? What the heck is PMS? Piss off at men syndrome? That makes sense.
PMS stands for premenstrual syndrome. It’s basically an emotional roller coaster ride. You feel happy, sad, alone, mad, depressed, ugly, self conscious…and the list goes on and on! You get PMS during the beginning of your period and the first couple days of it. There is no magic pill that will cure your PMS, but you can control it the natural way.
*Exercise! Like I said above, it’ll give you endorphins to help your mood.
*Vitamins! They will help stabilize your mood.
*Un-caffeinated Herbal Tea! It’ll help your mood and make you feel warm and calm!
*Get a Massage! What better way to release toxins and relax?
And now, it’s time for me to be real. All of these tips from around the web and from my momma are great! But…I’m a woman. I have the right to deal with my period anyway I choose. It’s okay to be pissed off at the world, to hide in the dark while binge watching Netflix, wear baggy clothing to cover our bloat, scream at our boyfriends for telling us we are PMSing, to cry while watching Disney movies, and to eat whatever we want. You shouldn’t feel ashamed for feeling the same way every other woman feels like. Some of us just choose to act like nothing is wrong when inside we are actually screaming at the top of our lungs. And if your period doesn’t effect you…I hate you. (not really…but i’m extremely jealous) I refuse to trade my ibuprofen for spinach when I have horrible cramps and if I don’t feel like grabbing endorphins when I’m in pain. That is just crazy. I will continue to roll my eyes at tampon commercials while avoiding anything white. Now if you will excuse me, I’m about to grab the dark chocolate chips, peanut butter, and toast to go with my Breaking Bad binge!
Laura says
Thank you for being real! It takes a lot of vulnerability to “have at it” in a post but I’m with you this week and I needed that!
Keep doin you!
Taralynn McNitt says
Thanks, Laura! 🙂 UNITED!
Amanda says
I totally agree! This is so true! No one really understands until they actually go through it! We all want to be healthy, but when mother nature gives us her “gift,” we can’t help what we feel! 🙂 really glad you brought this up and kept this post real 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
Lol, I just had it last night and had to share! I know there are people that can relate!
Kat says
Girl, I have been there! I had an IUD put in a few months back and that first period.. I literally took myself to the hospital. I was in double over, takes your breath away, can’t even speak only shake, pain. I actually thought I was having my uterus ripped out!
You are not alone. Thanks for the amazing post!
Taralynn McNitt says
I’m pretty sure you just described my night! It was awful!! Glad it’s normal? but not really glad at all…lol
Janie says
I know exactly what you mean. Ever since I first got my period I’ve had unbearable cramps. Cramps so painful that most of the time I had to call in sick to work or school because I just couldn’t take the pain. And nothing works to releave the pain. Not Tylenol, mydol, nothing. A couple of years ago I had to get an ultra sound done and found out the reason I’ve had unbearable cramps my whole life is because I have a heart shaped uterus. Which is basically half of a uterus on top of my regular uterus. But I’ve had no medicine take away the pain. Thanks for the tips.
Taralynn McNitt says
It’s so unfortunate and the people that don’t get them don’t understand! My mom actually had the same thing happen with her. She has a heart shaped uterus and had some pretty scary pregnancies and its a miracle that I’m even here. I had an ultrasound when I was younger to make sure I didn’t have the heart-shaped and fortunately I don’t. I know what you are going through because my mom used to talk about it all the time. She had her hysterectamy and doesn’t get the cramps anymore, but she said they were pretty bad. I hope everything gets better for you and the doctors can figure a way to make the pain go away! Hang in there! xo
Janie says
Thanks! I really don’t think there is much that can be done. However, the new pills I am on seem to give me less severe cramps most of the time. And you are so right about that. My sister used to think I was exaggerating and would get mad at me for missing school and work but she wasn’t going through the pain. Thanks for this post!
Beth says
Hey Janie, I have a heart shaped uterus too! Apparently it’s not too common.
Shaunie says
Hey Taralynn, I had similar problems to you with the pain and vomiting, ended up going to a gynecologist as I had had enough of it and they found a small amount of endometriosis, definitely something to look into, a lot of women suffer from it without even knowing!!
Taralynn McNitt says
I plan on making another doctors appointment. I’ll look into it! Thanks for looking out! xo
Nicolle says
This def sounds like endometriosis. I have been battling it for years and just recently was put on a menopause inducing drug with terrible side effects. I found that through exercise and eating a low fat diet and consuming less toxins (mostly from processed foods etc) I feel better and can get through my days. stretching and breathing exercises also help. Especially during the times you feel As though you are giving birth lol. Don’t let anyone tell u your pain isn’t real. I have been hospitalized twice because of extreme pain from so called ” cramps” for me it’s torture. Get yourself checked out. Unfortunately the only way to check for this is surgery but maybe some low estrogen birth control can get you through it. Good luck!!!
Erin says
I second this. Your experience is similar to someone with endometriosis. Def get it checked out, girl!
Taralynn McNitt says
Definitely!
Gwen says
This has been me allllll week, especially the moods. Aside from cramps, feeling whiny and moody is the worst. Stay strong, girl!
Taralynn McNitt says
Glad we can relate! It’s the worse! Hope you get to feeling better!xo
Taylor says
Excellent post! My crimson wave hit me this morning and this was exactly what i needed! You should go to your doctor! There are so many amazing things they can do for people who have alot of menstrual cramps. Better pain killers, for one. But also birth control, it helps make periods shorter and more bearable! Seriously, never be afraid to go to a doctor if you feel unhappy with what your body is doing.
Also, try taking a banana, smothering with peanut butter, raisins and dark chocolate chips (and honey) to make a gorgeous little boat. Works EVERY DAMN TIME.
All the best.
Taralynn McNitt says
She put me on a birth control that is supposed to help and it’s made it worse! Maybe it interferes with other medications but I’ll definitely be going back to see her! And that sounds like a dang good treat!!
Paige says
I’ve taken nearly every birth control in the market. Pills, rings, patches, etc. They all do horrible things to me. The one I’m on now is basically the least of evils. I miss my periods from before, but I’m not giving up sex with my husband any time soon so I deal. Birth control causes in my body what most people take them to prevent, well, except pregnacy! Lol. Genius post, love you! Good luck in finding something that helps you!
Taralynn McNitt says
Lol, sounds like you have one solid handle on this! Thanks so much!!:) love you too! xoxo
Georgina says
It’s crazy how different the responses can be to birth control. I feel no different on it, and it has really, really helped my cramps. I used to be doubled over in pain, feeling like someone was scraping out my insides with a spoon. Now? No pain at all!
My friend had the craziest mood swings on some pills though. One made her angry, one made her cry…she did find one to suit eventually, but it was quite the rollercoaster.
Taralynn McNitt says
That sounds so stressful trying to find the right one. I guess thats why I need to talk to my doctor! Glad you figured out the “cure”! xo
Cammy says
Yes, I have to second this. I used to be in terrible pain. Now on birth control I savor the mild cramping.
Jordan M says
First off! Your blog is great. I really look forward to reading it whenever I get the chance.
This was so convenient since I just got mine as well, haha. I feel like I go insane when I have mine! Thanks for making me feel a little better about it.
PS. If we have any topics we’re interested in or questions for you, where can we submit them (if that’s an option)? I emailed your gmail account a few days ago, but I’m not sure if that is how your FAQ works.
Taralynn McNitt says
Thanks, Jordan!
I was hoping to relate to someone with this post and I’m glad it worked!Emailing my gmail is fine! I have not checked it in a couple days because I’ve been working on some new things, but I’ll be checking emails on Monday! xo
Shannon says
Have you tried alternative birth contols? I had the death by cramps experiences and switched to seasonale then to the implant that goes into your upper arm. Seasonale is designed to give you four periods a year or you can avoid them all together by continuing your pills with no week off. The doctor said that a period is not needed to remain fertile, normal or healthy. I switched to the implant (which I adore) and do not have a period at all. Which means…no cramps!!
Taralynn McNitt says
My doctor has me on one specifically for cramps, but it hasn’t worked better. I’m starting to wonder if it’s interacting with my other medications. I avoided the implant because it (honestly) freaked me out. I might do some more reading into it tho! Thank you for sharing your experience! xo
Rae says
Thanks for sharing! I have thrown up from cramps too, I can DEFINITELY relate! It has only happened a couple of times, and I have noticed that it has happened on months where I have been less physically active, but I don’t know how much of a difference it makes. I’ve also found that taking ibuprofen for a couple days before my period starts seems to lessen the cramps, when I forget it really sucks because it seems like taking it after they start does not do anything for me.
Also, I really loved the use of the friends GIF
Taralynn McNitt says
Yeah, researchers say being active makes a huge difference. I’d like to say I’m pretty active…but who knows! That’s why it’s important to visit the doctor. I’ll have to remember the Ibuprofen tip! I bet that’ll work! & I love Friends!!:)
Jessie says
I think you had a cyst bursting, I get them all the time they are extremely painful.
Taralynn McNitt says
My friend told me thats what happened to her!
Louise says
You are going to hate me. I’ve never once had a cramp! But my BFF vomits, breaks out and literally dies the entire time. I guess I’m lucky!
Taralynn McNitt says
I hate you.
kidding….
but never say never…muhuwahahahaa!
Louise says
Try coming off birth control. I switched to one last year which gave me a 12 week period. 12 weeks!!! I was an emotional wreck. My poor boyfriend suffered so much. After 3 visits to my doctor she switched me again but I refused to take it and just came off it. My mood swings ended and it was like the sun came out
Taralynn McNitt says
Woah! That must have been rough! Sorry you had to go through that. No one deserves that!
Elizabeth says
Hey! Typically I never comment on posts but you gotta help a girl in need! First, have you ever experienced this painful of cramps any time previously? If this is just a once in a while thing don’t worry it’s the burden we must carry with being fabulous women! But if you start to notice this to be a more common occurrence definitely tell your doctor. The pain might be a sign of something more serious going on. But in the mean time don’t let anyone tell you that ibuprofen is bad! Take it around the clock to prevent the pain from starting when you know ‘the painters are coming’. So let’s say you take some and it kicks in and you feel fine when it’s been the 4-6 hours take another dose!! No need to be in pain when you don’t have to be 🙂 hope you feel better soon!
Taralynn McNitt says
This is my first time ever having cramps this bad! I usually get painful cramps…but this was different. This was so bad! I plan on making an appointment with my doctor soon! Girl, anyone could tell me Ibuprofen is bad and it would go out the other ear! I just can’t without it this time of month. I love the Ibuprofen tip and will definitely take that over to the next month with me! Thanks so much for taking the time to comment and share your tips! That means a lot to me!
Robyn p says
Oh my gosh! You posted this at the perfect time for me!!!! Got Mine at work today. Totally embarrassing and I wanted to die from cramps! Ugh. Thank you thank you for this!!!!
Taralynn McNitt says
It’s awful! I’ve been there so many times!!
Ele says
Oh my gosh, my cramps are like that from the 3rd to 5th day of my period and it is AWFUL! I live off of ibuprofen and hot bubble baths! BOYS HAVE IT SO EASY 🙁
Taralynn McNitt says
Lol. I don’t know how many times I told Jeremy “he’s so lucky to be a guy” yesterday! I think he felt guilty. lol Omg hot bubble baths are the best! I plan on taking one while watching the MTV awards tonight. #nerdalert
Ashley C says
Oh the dreaded shark week (thats what I call it anyways). That kind of pain could mean so many things, definitely talk to your doctor about it. Hopefully, it never comes back like that, but you handled it the best way! I love those GIFs though! They completely lightened this up!
Taralynn McNitt says
I love the term “shark week”. I’ll be using that from now on! And I will for sure talk to my doctor about the pain, it was awful! And thank you, I love the gifs!:) Sometimes Jeremy and I don’t talk to each other and just gif back and fourth!
Donika says
Giiiiirl,no one can relate to extreme pain from cramps better than me.. For some time now on the first day of my period as soon as i wake up /if i wake up early that is,sometimes i get woken up by pain/ it starts.. For some time i could not find anything to at least the pain and then i found the magic pill diclofenacNa or simply diclac i swear to God that pill is one of the best things that have ever happened to me!!! In recent months the cramps are just getting more and more severe and if by any chance i do not have my pill around on the morning of the first day i start puking, crying and begging for my life…i don’t even want to think about it..hope it doesnt happen to you again, have a nice week!
Taralynn McNitt says
I’ve never even heard of it! But your pain sounds awful:( I hope you get everything figure out! Hang in there!!!
Elizabeth says
Your symptoms sound like what I grew up dealing with. I have recurring ovarian cysts and they cause really bad cramping and symptoms. I’ve been to the ER for my cysts when they’ve burst. I went on a birth control specifically for cysts and it was the best decision ever. You should ask your doctor about cysts.
Taralynn McNitt says
Yeah, a lot of people have mentioned that to me and I didn’t realize how common it was! I’ll definitely look into it!
Myriam says
Well THANK YOU for this ! Two weeks ago I had to leave from my internship early because the cramps were so bad I couldn’t focus on anything ! I got home and went straight to bed with some hot tea ! I cried a lot and both my boyfriend and cat had no idea of how to behave with me ! It’s too hard being a girl sometimes !
Taralynn McNitt says
I just pictured your boyfriend and cat sitting with other lol Great image! It’s so sad we have to go through this and I don’t think we should have to hide the pain and shy away from feeling like crap!
Vanessa says
I had bad cramps too before I had my two children….I learned a lot from childbirth that helps when on your period. It’s kind of foreign to do the first time, but when I’m on my period now, when in the shower I ‘push’ or squeeze like I’m in labor and it moves the blood and clots out so much faster. My period used to last 5-7 days, but now that I know to squeeze it out- it speeds up the process by helping your uterus shed the lining quicker so my periods are only 3-5 day and much lighter bc most of the ‘stuff’ comes out while I squeeze in the shower. My OB said it’s what women in the old days did before feminine products. Makes sense! Sounds gross, but try it. If you you haven’t had a baby- you push like you’re pooping almost and then do a kegal. Probably TMI, but it works!
Taralynn McNitt says
Wow! Thanks for those tips. I’ve never heard of anything like that before! I don’t care how crazy that is, it’s something to consider! TMI accepted here! lol
Taylor Wall says
My period hit me like a Mac truck yesterday also. I was driving and almost had to pull over from how bad I was cramping! I know how you feel. We all do haha. I tend to sleep all day and eat whatever I can. I totally regret it right now. So thanks for this post, makes me feel so much better.
Taralynn McNitt says
No problem! And there is nothing to be ashamed of or feel guilty for! If all of us are experiencing the same thing…it must mean we are normal!
Sandra says
Ah this sounds so familiar. I used to get the worst cramps and throw up everything I attempted to eat. Even chewing gum would make me turn green in the face. I would miss so much school because I couldn’t function like a normal person. Dark days *shudder*. Birth control quickly got everything in proper working order but it took a while to find the right pill for me. I would definitely talk with your doc and maybe try a different pill. No one should have to suffer!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hmmm! That may be just what I need! So glad those dark days are over for you! No one deserves that!
Sarah says
Omg I loved this post so much!!! I have the same problem but it’s only super bad for the first two days. I notice on months I exercise more in general, it’s less painful. Also, strangely enough, sex can help the cramps go away. Something about it relaxing the muscles.
Till next month lol
xx sarah

Taralynn McNitt says
lol love the honesty! Sounds like a great way to get rid of the cramps haha. My exercise months usually help the pain too!
Sara says
2 alieve pills the day before you ride the crimson wave and 2 alieve pills the first 3 days — tootle-loo cramps! Heating pad and lay on your left side along with the alieve.
Taralynn McNitt says
How come the left side?
Anita says
Not sure if this would be a good option for you. I take a birth controll pill that makes it so I only have a period every three months. I love it. When the time is right in your life you may talk to your doctor about this method of regulating your period.
Taralynn McNitt says
Yeah, I may see what she says about switching birth controls!
Haylee says
Wow! I read this and I thought I was reading something I would write. Just the other week I went through that. Literally shaking from having the chills, having a fever, crawling on the floor, then standing up, then back to crawling. Its ridiculous and no fair when I hear girls who never experience that. Glad I’m not the only one! Thanks for sharing lady.
Taralynn McNitt says
Of course! if you read some of the comments, a lot of great tips have been given for us! Hopefully you can get it all figured out! xo
Kim @ Hungry Healthy Girl says
I’m “literally” with you on this and love this post! I’ve never cramps as bad as what you’re speaking about, but I definitely feel the effects of aunt flow. I’m really not down with her either. 😉
Taralynn McNitt says
Thanks, Kim! Is anyone really down with Aunt Flow?! lol
LaDonna says
I have had horrible cramps since I was 12 (I’m 28 now) Imagine going through this every month (the vomiting, debilitating pain, and even muscle spasms) for 16 years. I couldn’t handle it, so I would make almost monthly trips to the doctor for a shot to stop the pain and nausea (birth control didn’t help), but none of them could tell me why the pain was so extreme… Until last year when a doctor decided to do an ultrasound and found uterine fibroids (little noncancerous tumors)… percocet helped with the pain, but supposedly there are only a few ways to get rid of them including surgery. Anyway this comment isn’t meant to give a medical history 🙂 I didn’t have surgery, but I did start taking a tablespoon of blackstrap molasses (you can get it at Whole Foods) every morning, and it really helped!!! (Vanessa’s comment is interesting… I think I will try that too!)
Taralynn McNitt says
I don’t know how you lasted that long. I’m scared of my periods now! That was awful. A lot of you are inspiring me to get this all figured out!
Rosanne says
I stopped reading as soon as you said your uterus was twisting, pain is NOT normal. It’s not supposed to be a part of our cycle. I am writing because I had undiagnosed celiac disease and lived on extra strength Tylenol, called it my life support. I had endometriosis and fibroids because of it, not trying to scare you, but every time I hear this, I think of the days screaming in pain curled up in bed.
Taralynn McNitt says
That’s exactly how I felt! I didn’t realize it could be anything serious. I do need to get it checked out.
Kimbo Slice says
So…I can’t related to this. LOL I workout every other day, eat a vitamin-rich diet with very little meat, and have a healthy weight of 110 lbs to my 5’1″ height but my period only lasts a day and that’s it. No cramps, no moods, no nothing. I just whip out (or maybe in?) my Diva Cup for my short period and I’m on my way. Seriously though….The Diva Cup is amazing for any of you that hate tampons or pads/pantyliners! Bought it for when I lived abroad where tampons weren’t available for purchase and have never turned back.
Taralynn McNitt says
Girl…jealousy going through my veins.
Kimi R says
Since I started my period I have had cramps so bad I throw up every time I have learned that its hard to deal with and that I have to catch them early. Usually the first 2 days are the worst. Right as i start feeling them start i take 2-3 ibuprofen depending on how busy I am. It seems like a lot for a first day and sometimes for 2 but that’s what I do since Midol doesn’t work for me. Also know what foods make it worse for you. It is different for everybody. Mine is any dairy products and sometimes gooey candy’s and fruit snacks. That’s most help I can offer. I am sorry you ever had to suffer from throwing up because of cramps it is the worst thing ever.
Taralynn McNitt says
Yeah! I’ve never thought about food being a trigger! I’ll have to keep track of that. I’ve heard that dairy can be bad, and it’s better to take a calcium supplement. I hope things get better for you! xo
Katie says
I loved this! Sadly my birth control makes my periods very random. I usually will go without my period for about 3 or 4 months but once it comes it stays for a whole month! Cramps and all come with it =(
Taralynn McNitt says
Oh sheesh! That would be frustrating. And a period for a whole month? whatttt!
Katie says
I know its pretty awful =(
Cloud Ochoa says
Im allergic to ibuprofen and all other nsaids. Even aspirin. I get cramps so bad I cant function.
Taralynn McNitt says
Omg:( So what does your doctor recommend for you? Just all the natural remedies or is there something you can take?
Jill says
Hi. I just wanted to say definitely get checked for endometriosis. I had horrible periods until age 17 when I finally took matters into my own hands and found info on endometriosis. 5 years and 2 surgeries later and I finally hvae some control over it. It affects everyone differently so some don’t feel pain/symptoms until they are older and some do from the first period.
Taralynn McNitt says
Oh gosh! Thats scary! I’m glad you are okay! And yes yes yes! I’ll look into it!
Cindy says
You can also find relief from essential oils (like doTERRA). There are recommendations for PMS, cramps, etc. Clary sage is one of them. You can also combine oils to act as pain relievers and apply them topically. There are some good books about essential oils or folks can find a well-versed doTERRA rep or visit their company’s blog for more information.
Taralynn McNitt says
Hmm! i’ve never heard of that! Thanks for the tip.
Allison says
Thanks for the list of ways to help reduce the symptoms! I am all prepared for the upcoming week. I’ve found since switching my birth control my cycle isn’t overbearing but i do feel uncomfortable in my own skin! I’m also lucky to have a guy who may not understand completely how I am feeling, but will come home with a movie and a pizza and let me wear his baggy tshirts! Great post 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
Thats what a lot of people are saying! And you are one lucky gal! Jeremy would do the same (not only because he loves pizza) haha! I’m going to talk to my doctor about birth controls. I think mine is making it worse.
Vanessa says
It’s amazing what a little bit of exercise can do for cramps but I also find it almost impossible to get up from the fetal position to move on my first day. I definitely feel your pain w/ this – I’ve passed out from the pain, thrown up, gotten migraines everything and people just brush it off as a little bit of pain. It’s unbearable. Kudos to you for putting an honest blog post out there for ladies every where to relate to!
Taralynn McNitt says
Thats how I feel! It makes me feel a little better that others get this too. It’s just something no one ever talks about!

I had sympathy pains while reading this! I’m sorry you had to experience all of that 🙁 I appreciate your bravery tackling this subject! I see where you’ve already said that you plan to talk to your doctor, but I would definitely recommend it! I def don’t mean to scare you, but such severe pain could be an indication of endometriosis or cysts. I say this from experience :/ I’ve had the Mirena for four years now and it has helped me tremendously! Get this: I don’t get a period anymore. Seriously, it’s wonderful. I hope you can have a productive conversation with your doctor and come up with a solution to help you in the future. Good luck!
Taralynn McNitt says
Yeah, I guess it’s more serious than I thought. Someone else told me that Mirena was a miracle for them. Thanks for all the tips and I’ll keep you all posted! xo

This post was brilliant!!!! <3 My favorite sweet-but-not-too-sweet-so-I-don't-feel-as-bad-about-it treat when Aunt Flow comes for a visit is apple cinnamon rice cakes with cookie butter (from Trader Joe's) and chia seeds. If I eat anything too heavy it makes it worse, so that's just sweet and light enough to do the trick! Hugs, hope the rest of your week starts looking up 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
Thanks, Rachel! love the sweet-but-not-too-sweet-so-i-dont-feel-as-bad-about-it (wow, typing that was rough…why didn’t I copy and post…too late! ) I still need to try Trader Joe’s cookie butter! I keep hearing great things about it. I probably don’t have the will power to keep it in the house lol. I’ll give it a try tho! Thanks for the rec! xo

Hey Taralynn, I’m commentating (which I never do) about the paleo chocolate chip and snickerdoodle. They are incredible! I’m not paleo but I do eat fairly clean. I’m blown away by how great these are. Thank you! On another note your recipes are getting easier to follow and the new site was a good move. You are really coming along as a blogger. Keep challenging yourself and you will continue to inspire others. PS, maybe someone has mentioned this already but as an RN I recommend talking to your doctor about endometriosis. It shouldn’t hurt THAT bad. Best of luck to you!
Taralynn McNitt says
Wow! That means so much to me! Thanks for commenting! You have no idea how a comment can turn my day around! It makes me feel like I’m doing something right. And I’m so glad you loved the cookies, the recipes and the new site! And I will definitely talk to my doctor! Thanks again!:)

I am by no means a smoker, but I get cramps as bad as yours almost every period. I actually can’t even eat during my periods I get so nauseous and if I do I always throw up. Ibuprofen only helps marginally. Anyway the only thing that has really helped is… Marijuana.. PMS never gets mentioned when talking about its medicinal uses but for those who have access think about it. I don’t and have only used it in Amsterdam or Colorado but it helps soooo much with the pain and naseau but I digress.. A controversial topic still I suppose
Taralynn McNitt says
Interesting! Well, I’d most likely get arrested for that! But…it’s a natural remedy 😉

I just wanted to say thank you for making this post. I, too, have painful periods (even on birth control, unfortunately, though it’s loads better than without) and get all moody/bitchy during “that” time. My husband is really supportive and understanding, though most men in my life never have been, but the thing that has always saddened me more than any of them is the WOMEN who tear us down. I’m talking about the ones who never get cramps and never have any mood swings or hormonal issues to worry about, and therefore conclude that we are simply “faking it” or making too big a deal out of it. This only serves to reinforce to (some) men that “Look, THIS woman’s fine, why can’t you be ‘normal’ too?” It’s one thing for men to say these things and tear us down, but for other women to do it to us feels like a slap in the face – it made me feel really good to see someone I respect as a blogger like you confronting the issue with “you know what? it’s OKAY that you feel that way! you’re allowed!” instead. So thank you, Taralynn!
Taralynn McNitt says
I’ll never assume someone is faking it! Whenever someone throws out the shark week card, I get on their level of understanding! No one deals with the same symptoms but some of us can relate! Thanks so much for commenting and showing the support! That reallllly means a lot! xoxo

I can so relate to this. I couldn’t figure out why I was so fiercely grouchy the other day, and when I say grouchy I mean GROUCHY! I didn’t even want to talk to anyone because I just felt this surge of annoyance all day long. I felt completely crazy and avoided everyone. I figured out the reason for my craziness when I caught a glance of my bloated stomach in a mirror and remembered Doomsday was due to arrive soon. The next night my cramps were so terrible that they woke me up. The only thing that gave me relief was laying flat on my stomach on top of my heating pad. I bet I looked ridiculous! That thing is a life saver. However, your pain seems to be even worse than mine. I hope you find some relief so you don’t have to be scared of Aunt Flow’s arrival every month! 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
I get the case of the grouch too!! Thanks for the tips and I’ll definitely go to the doctor!

This falls into TMI but I’ll share it just in case it helps you or someone else. I also get really bad cramps. Every month like clock work. It’s only the first day which is good I suppose but that one day really sucks and I usually have to stay home and miss work. My uterus is tilted the wrong way and pushes on my bowels and so when I have cramps it causes me horrible pain and to also to go to the bathroom all day long. Let’s just say the whole experience is very painful. Sometimes I’ve thrown up. Taking large quantities of ibuprofen and pepto bismel helps me. I try to always stay on birth control though because it just prevents the problem from ever happening which is a hundred percent better of course! Or if I’m smart enough and have counted my days I can usually take enough medicine beforehand and have mild symptoms. This only works if your cycle is regular. Mine is. I get mine every 26 days if I’m not on the pill but I don’t always pay attention and so bam, the pain hits me and everything sucks. Good luck ladies. And remember, go to your doctors. Preventative care is NO COST with insurance now. Birth control is also NO COST with insurance now. So if you have insurance and you have painful cycles, SCHEUDLE THAT APPOINTMENT!
Taralynn McNitt says
Great advice!!!

This is so gross… but I get the worst yeast infections a few days before I start then I cry and cry and cry and cry some more bc I’m embarassed. It’s not cramping..but it sucks soooo bad and BC has NEVER helped me only made everything worse! Anyways as I read this I’m eating whole wheat dark choc. M&M cookies and watching a red box feeling like a bloated fat ass. Hope your pain gets better. Makes me feel a little less crazy! xo
Taralynn McNitt says
That sounds like my night! Hey…at least they are whole wheat right? 😉 hang in there, girly! xo

This post really worried me, along with all of the “I’ve been there!” comments. Period cramps are not supposed to be debilitating. If you’re seriously in that much pain, it is absolutely acceptable to go to a doctor. It could be a sign of something major, like endometriosis, PCOS or even cysts. Seriously, if this happens again next month I would really urge you (and anyone else who commented here) to see a doctor. That level of pain is not normal.
Taralynn McNitt says
I didn’t realize it was abnormal. I just assumed we all got bad/or no cramps! I’ll DEFINITELY go to the doctor. Thanks for the advice!

This is a great post! The fact that sometimes I don’t even know when PMS is hitting makes me mad when someone just blames my actions on it. At the time, I’ll just have emotions and opinions and they are RIGHT no matter what, until a couple days later. 😉

Lol don’t we all?

I know many others have posted about having cyst ruptures already, but I also wanted to lend my experience to you as well. My sophomore year of college I began experiencing cramps like you described, becoming sick and just crying in the hot shower until the water ran cold. The cramps would come on suddenly like a sharp stabbing pain and I would feel this pressure and begin to sweat horribly and become sick. I was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome a few months later when the ruptures became more frequent. This past summer I was diagnosed with Endometriosis after one of my cyst did not rupture and grew in size and surgery was required to remove it. It was scary, but after I found out what was wrong I began getting treatment and I am feeling better than I have my entire life. No more pain. Please know you do not suffer alone with cramps and pains. I found a heating pad worked well with soothing some of the pain and soreness. Best thoughts sent your way! Thanks for running such an awesome blog!
Taralynn McNitt says
Wow! That is so scary! Sorry you had to go through that. No one deserves that, but you sound like a very strong girl and I’m inspired to go get checked out! Thanks for all of the tips! I’ll be taking them with me 🙂 xo
Lindsey T says
You are awesome, taralynn! Such a great post and you’re tone is hilarious 🙂 I used to faint from the extreme pain and throw up as well (sorry if this has already come up in the comments). Turns out it was cysts causing the pain for me, not just cramps. Once I was able to treat those my periods became so much more tolerable. Just sharing in case it helps you (I used to live off the Motrin and heating pads too, but don’t need them anymore!). Best of luck to you 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
Thanks, Lindsey!!
Don’t be sorry! It’s great to see what other people are going through and what I should be looking out for!
Mika says
Yes, I agree with some of the earlier posters… I’d look into it. It sounds like endometriosis. You could also have cysts, or both (I do.) The pain gets pretty severe most periods. I’ve had to go to the hospital twice about it, and had surgery once. Definitely look into it, there are ways to help control/deal with the pain and issues associated with it.
However yes, the nutrition and exercise can help as well, definitely. It isn’t a cure-all, so I still suggest seeing a doctor about it, but it doesn’t hurt.
Taralynn McNitt says
Wow that is scary! Sorry you had to go through that. I will for sure get everything checked out.
Kristin says
I could write a book in response to your post but to keep it short…this is my life since I”ve been 15…I have poly-cystic ovaries and endometriosis…What you were feeling last night is what it was like for me when a cyst would bust but heating pads and meds always helped. One thing…I have been on the pill since I was 15 (Im 28 now) and the one I am on now it amazing but for a while they switched me to Low Estrogen and I was violently and physically ill from it especially at the beginning of my periods. I would def. check with your doc on the type of pill you are on. I hope this is helpful and yo never have to go through that pain again!!!
Taralynn McNitt says
I’m so sorry you have to deal with that! But it’s inspiring me to go get it all checked out further! Thanks for sharing your experience and I hope things get better! xo
kaylee says
Oh no, that sounds so awful!! I’m so sorry Taralynn!
I know IUD reaction for everyone are different, but I got one last year–the kind with hormones– and I haven’t had a real, true period since the first month. Now I only spot a little throughout the month. I couldn’t stand other types of birth control because I’d get terrible cramps and they made me feel bloated and blah.
But seriously. Having this IUD has been a godsend because honestly.. NO PERIOD! It’s fantastic!! Maybe look into it!
Taralynn McNitt says
Definitely will!! Thanks Kaylee!!

Hey Taralynn,
I have had a similar situation too (twice, actually). The first time it happened the pain was so bad that I fainted in the shower. The second time It happened I was sweating and freezing at the same time. At the time I was in Spain by myself and couldn’t make it downstairs to call a cab for the hospital. Each time I would fall asleep and feel completely fine after a couple of hours. I didn’t get anything checked out until months later but the doctor mentioned that I could have had a cyst on my ovaries. I’m sure your fine but I know I never want to feel that level of intensity again when it comes to my period and if you’re pain was any where near mine then maybe you should try seeing a doctor. Just to make sure. 🙂 I really do hope you never feel that pain ever again.
Taralynn McNitt says
Scary! I was also going through the cold/hot chills and its not fun! The shower was the only thing that worked. I hope its nothing too severe, but you guys are all inspiring me to get it checked out!

One time when I was having bad cramps and I did some googling and raspberry tea was mentioned. Tried it out and it seemed to help me.

Girl, I feel ya. We’re all in the same boat. I’m PMSing like crazy this week (and I swear it’s getting worse the older I get :D). Thanks for this lovely post, it’s nice to know we’re not alone ;). Oh also, I used to take the pill with a really, really low hormone content. It takes a few months for your body to get used to it but my PMS was nowhere near as bad as it is now that I’ve gone of it. And one more thing – my doctor recommended Chasteberry extract which helped me massively. 5HTP isn’t bad either (it balances out your serotonin levels, which obviously makes you happier but also helps a lot with craving control, particularly starchy carbs). And I also take Vitamin D drops from autumn until spring, because I find my PMS is a lot worse when I don’t get enough sun.
Taralynn McNitt says
You’re welcome Elia! And those are great tips! I’ve never even heard of Chasteberry! I’m so glad you all are leaving such great tips!!

I’ve been where you were, unfortunately 🙁 Horrible, horrible cramps, throwing up, fainting etc. Once actually had to call an ambulance ’cause I thought I was going to die.
4 years ago I got the Mirena IUD fitted (not the copper one, but the one with the tiny amount of hormones, not sure if it’s called the same in the US)and haven’t had a period (or cramps) since. Plus, it is also an extremely effective way of birth control. It lasts for 5 years which is a plus. Not gonna lie, it hurt to get it fitted and maybe for 3 months after that my body had to get used to it. But I haven’t regretted it for 1 second, not having those cramps or any of it is honestly amazing! (I hold no shares, promise 😉 Just wanted to comment in case anyone is considering.)
Taralynn McNitt says
That might be something to look into. Everyone is raving about it!

OMG ! I just love this, sometimes we forget that healthy ridiculously pretty people (That would be you) can have a mosh pit in their Uteris as well!
Normally at this time, My poor Fiancee is stuck making my hot water bottle and running me steamy baths !! I practically have to tie myself up to keep away from anything slightly resembling chocolate and I take pain killers like smarties… And then when those kick in, I cuddle with my water bottle !
I’d rather not mention my moods…
But thanks for posting this and being soo real about it… It sucks and it always will no matter how much endorphins or veggies you binge on!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hahaha love that you take smarties as pain killers. Here’s the question tho…When I lived in NY, I had a ton of friends from Canada. My smarties were not the same as their smarties…Are you by chance Canadian?!
Kellie Mooney says
I take midol extended release and that is the only thing that works for me…I’ve laid on the floor crying in the fetal position before I found that stuff. I hate pumping my body with medicine but it’s a necessary evil because I refuse to take birth control.
Danielle Wooding says
Another big one for cramps (and your cycle in general) is mineral content. Seaweed and nettles are big go-tos, but dark greens of any kind will certainly help too. What I prefer though is bone broth: http://commonwealthherbs.com/2012/04/bone-broth-demystified/ Aside from staying away from sugar, nothing has ever helped me better than bone broth. It works even better if you have it all the time rather than only when you have cramps. It should help make you feel better all around all the time. The link recommends keeping a pot on the stove, but I just use a crock pot. 🙂
Miriam says
You should definetely see your gynecologist very soon. When I started having cramps like you, I had become Endometriosis. This is actually very hard to see for the physician. The only save way for a good diagnosis is a laparoscopy and the most effect therapy is taking birth control.
Hope you are feeling better today 🙂 I had this starting when i was on the plane on the way to my honeymoon at Koh Samui 🙁 really bad timing!!

Lol! I’m so sorry you feel awful Taralynn! I totally relate…I get the worst cramps EVAH. I have to just medicate with tylenol or advil and wait for it to go away. Thanks for making me laugh about it though. I thought I was the only crazy one. 🙂

Taralynn–
This happened to me about 4 months ago. I am a nanny and I was taking the children to see Santa at the mall when I got the WORST cramps ever. I was shaking, drenched in sweat, throwing up, dizzy…etc. I stood outside in a tank top to try to cool down and was still sweating (it was snowing outside). The pain was something you cannot even put into words. I went to the ER and they did a CT scan and found that a cyst on my ovary had busted. Unfortunately, all they can do is give you strong pain meds and say, “sorry…I hope you feel better.” And apparently if you have had a cyst burst once, you are more likely to have it happen again. Now each month i just wait around for that GOD AWFUL pain to arrve again. So far i have been in the clear…knock on wood. It sucks SOOOOO bad. Good luck girl!!

By far the best post you have ever logged. And I have been keeping up with you for about two years now! Your candid exposition about the grandeur of womanhood [sic]; freaking hillllarrrious! It’s okay with me if you feel pissy and want to crawl under the covers. I think the reason it’s not okay with men is because they want to believe their Gods. And if they admitted to feeling pain, or even to acknowledging someone else’s pain, this would remind them that they are Human. God forbid a man would actually experience anything remotely close to what women do (ie., cramps, childbirth, children), they are liable to cry uncontrollably asking for their Mommies! Anyway, I was thinking about what it could be that is causing this pain you are experiencing. Lately, I have noticed that you have been eating more glutenous foods. This plus the extra indulgences/frequency of junky foods and/or the addition of chicken, could be playing with your internal flora. Just a thought. I hope you feel better soon! In the meantime, feel free to bitch anytime! Luv ya!
Cheri @ Overactive Blogger says
I totally went on the Mirena, and between that and working out, I barely have a period these days. I know you’re supposed to avoid caffeine, but I do coffee, and a good workout, and generally that helps me to kick that awful feeling that my period gives me 🙂

Haha! Tara, this article made me giggle, great way to start off my week. I can relate, I used to get cramps that were so bad all I could do is just lie there, I was completely handicapped for hours. Only thing that worked for me was a double dose of Ibuprofen (probably not the best solution, but that was the only time I took medicine!). Once that kicked in and I could actually move, walking helped too like you said. I am now on a birth control that has helped to take away the cramps almost completely, so if that is an option for any ladies out there, I would suggest talking to your doc!
Go girl! Good advice!!

Girl, I feel your pain!!!! My cramps are the worst!! Crying, vomiting, yelling at my fiance type pain. I have found that heating pads, Yogi Moon Cycle tea, and pain pills tend to help a little. My doctor has me on prescription pain meds for the cramps. It also helps to get ahead of the pain. Start taking ibuprofen a day or two before you know you are going to start. Good luck, and thanks for writing about this. Clearly, you are not alone in the suffering, and your tips are really helpful!
Melissa says
I had the worst cramps for YEARS. The kind you’re describing where you think you are going to die. If I took 4 Advil right when the cramps started, I could kind of head them off, but if not – pain city. My dr. always told me avoiding caffeine would help, but I thought nothing could help such horrible cramps (and I love my caffeine). Then one month I gave up caffeine because I was stressed and thought that might help with the stress levels – and I got home one night and realized I’d started my period. But I didn’t even know because I’d HAD NO CRAMPS. Not a one. I had had horrible cramps EVERY SINGLE PERIOD for 20 years. So – just passing it along because I feel your pain! Exercise + no caffeine = (for me) absolutely no cramps. (But confession: I just take Advil with me so I can have my coffee and avoid cramps at the same time. Still, I do cut down on coffee and drink decaf at that time of the month.)

It’s definitely ok to be a hater – especially of THIS chick! 😉
Have you ever tried using essential oils to help with PMS? I’ve just started using them for other things and, to be honest, they’ve kinda freaked me out with how amazing they are. I’m not selling them – you can stop by my place and leave a comment if you want to know more (I’m also not looking for blog traffic – like 3 people read it and I’m related to almost all of them!).

I like the tips and I will try eating more veggies, tea and less coffee when auntie flow comes. However (every girl may hate me for this) I don’t get cramps to often (twice a year max). I do get bad breakouts and craving for salt, cheese, and ice cream and eat half my house when I get my period. I also feel more sad and tend to be more sensitive and take things too personal (I’ve had life’s worst moments due to PMS!!!!!!!). I feel one day they could be worst and I’ll experience cramps every month like everyone else.
lauryn says
oh girl i feel for you, I usually get bad ones, they used to be REALLY bad when I was younger. I have even came home from work before because I couldnt take it. Midol kinda helps. Oh but now that I am older (like 28) I get cramps usually but also a nice sucky headache like a few days before. So fun.

It happens to me A LOT! I often vomit and I even fainted once because it was reaaaally painful! when I have such a strong pain, pills won’t work for me, so my mom injects me (thank you God for giving me a mother who knows how to inject people!). So don’t feel ashamed if you need to go to the doctor when you feel like that, they’ll probably inject you or give you a powerfull pain reliever pill 😉 (sorry for the bad english)

Hey Taralynn, have you ever gone to the doctor for your cramps?
A few years back, I had one particular period where I had such terrible cramps, I couldn’t walk.
I went to the walk-in clinic and it was actually because I had an ovarian cyst. I had to get an x-ray and they said it was the size of my fist!
I had to take it easy with exercise because they said if it got any bigger, they would have to do surgery to remove it. Luckily though, it went away on it’s own!
Thanks for sharing! 🙂 Hope you’re feeling better today!
Sarah says
Actually exercise not only boosts endorphins but the increase of blood flow takes the pain away, that’s probably why you felt better standing up. So if you’re looking for motivation to get moving while on your period just know that as soon as your blood gets pumping your cramps will no longer be noticeable. I get terrible cramps and this works for me all the time!
Taralynn McNitt says
That is a GOLD tip! Thanks so much!

I had to comment, since I have had the exact same problem as you. My cramping was due to the use of artificial sweeteners…splenda, equal, SF syrup, light n fit yogurt, SF torani, sbux skinny lattes (found in so many things). Once I cut those out of my diet, I have not had any problems with cramps. Hope this helps!
Adrija says
Not trying to laugh at your pain or anything, but this was absolutely hilarious! Mostly because I could relate to almost every single thing.

I used to be the exact same way, heating pads, Advil, and all! I even had to skip classes/go home early because cramps were so bad and I couldn’t even stand up! Birth control has solved all of my problems 🙂 Periods are only 3 days and I forget I am even on it! Highly recommend it!
You’re awesome! Hope you feel better 🙂

This was great! The way you write how you’re feeling, even if it’s anger, is just so cute. 🙂 I love that you were able to make light of that dreaded time of month while also being completely real and informative about it. I’ll definitely be looking back on this next time she comes around
Chelsea says
Hey Taralynn-
Clearly you’re far from being alone in this issue! I’m actually a physician assistant in family practice and since I’m the only female provider in my office, I’ve dealt with many female issues. I agree with many of your responders that a visit to your doc is appropriate. A switch in your birth control may help, but I would definitely do a work up based on your symptoms. Get ready to answer a lot of the following questions: do you get break through bleeding? How heavy is your flow? Is there a lot of clots? Do you have pain other times of the month? Pain with sex? Change in breast pain/lumps/etc? Any increase in fatigue, fevers, or night sweats? Any change in vision? Change in bowel/bladder habits?
As far as treatment for cramps, NSAIDs work by blocking the prostaglandins that causes cramps, so Tylenol is basically worthless. Aleve last longer than Advil so try that. There isn’t sufficient research on vitamins for cramps but it doesn’t hurt. Hydrating, exercising, getting adequate rest, and avoiding caffeine will help. Caffeine actually stimulates muscle cramps and will send your uterus into overload.
But I think you should get an exam (sorry lol) and an ultra sound (fair warning, it is trans vaginal and can hurt). Things like endometriosis, ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids(although you’re kinda young for those), among other things can be occurring.
Id be happy to answer any questions for you! You’ve help me a lot and I’ve actually shown patients (especially young adult girls) your blog for motivation and tips to lose weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle, So far so good 🙂
Carrie says
You should never be afraid to go to the hospital because you’re afraid they’ll laugh at you. Healthcare professionals are just that – professionals! They are there to take care of your concerns, however big or small they are. Plus, it sounds like you really should get checked out!

Hey Taralynn!
I regularly have extreme pms and painful cramps with my cycle. My dad is a family practice dr and he told me years ago that about every 3rd cycle is typically is worse. That rings true with me and I dread it every 3 months. Painful cramps, passing out, throwing up, the works! Anyway, I started using Maca powder to help regulate hormone levels last December. I had actually found out about it when I was looking for diet modifications to help with stress and anxiety. I was kind of skeptical at first but I thought I would give I a shot and see what happened. After about 2 months I had a noticeable reduction in food cravings and mood swings (my husband of 5 years even commented that he didn’t even notice my normal delightful mood boost prior to my period. He had even forgotten I was taking the Maca powder). My period has always lasted 7 days and that even reduced to 4-5 days. It was magical! Haha. I usually put it in my morning smoothie which has chocolate vegan protein powder, almond milk, a banana, and a tbs of peanut butter. The Maca is kind of bitter so the peanut butter hides it well. Just thought I would share!
Laura G says
Oh my… what a horrible night…
The worst thing is not that extreme pain, it’s when it catches you unaware! You think is going to be just like any other week, a little bit more uncomfortable and moody, but that’s all, and then *BOOM!!* TERRIBLE PAIN.
I once was in a summer course away from home and away from my student flat, spending the day at the city where I was taking the course, but then *BOOM* hello excruciating pain. I had nobody to call because I was there on my own and I didn’t know anybody in the course, so I went to the train station to go back to my flat and I FAINTED because of the pain! The worst of all is that the people looked at me as if I was drunk or something, and it was around 1pm, come on! I finally arrived home safely but it was one of the worst days of my life. So yeah, it’s ok to be the hater.
PS: After the story of this terrible moment I just wanted to tell you that I’ve been reading your blog for two years and I love it. I always think about commenting but end up not doing it… I don’t know why.
( I apologise for my English, I’m Spanish so I try to do my best hahaha)

I have to say, I love this post. This is what I go through every month! So glad to know someone else feels like I do, but on another note I’m so sorry! It truly sucks! What’s even worse is one of my latest really bad periods started while I was at work >_< I'm an RN and constantly have to run around all day long and deal with some rather mean family members from time to time as well as some very sad situations. Talk about a terrible explosion of emotions…..happening all at the same time! I don't always get to take breaks at work, but on these days I have to take a 10 minute recollect and pep talk to get myself through the rest of the day. Nothing is more embarrassing than having what feels like a mental breakdown while feeling like your being eaten from the inside out while in a professional atmosphere……

You are just too cute! I love the way you ended this post, it is so true! I am a total beyotch while PMSing and everyone is so quick to call me out on it…well ya know what, it’s my right to be a little cranky when my uterus is punishing me for not putting a baby in it! 😉

I take Birth Control now. I don’t even get cramps anymore or get bloated. But, before that It was horrible. I’d be in the bathroom rocking back and forth trying not to cry LOL. Thank god for BC!!!

I hear you. I have endometriosis and I would pass out from the pain on a regular basis. Nothing worked and it was so horrible. 9 surgeries later, I had to have a complete hysterectomy at the age of 19 and trade in my horrible cramps for menopause and hot flashes.
Severe pain with your period is not normal, there could be a medical reason why you are hurting so bad. Endo and ovarian cysts are common causes of pain

I used to get really sick every time I got my period (like throwing up every month) and ever since I started taking birth control, I haven’t gotten sick at all. I was actually told to go on it bc of how sick I was getting.

Hi there!
I read this post two days ago, but ran out of time to comment.
That ist soooooooooooooooooooooo true! I laughed my ass off, cause your gifs are so funny. Exactly how my daughter an I are acting, when the Dragon days are there.
My worst night was when I met my girls. We are living scattered over germany. All with families, so we can only have our meetings two times a year. It caught me really evil three years ago. Never had it this bad. It started while driving to the meeting place… I felt so sick in my stomach. It got worse over the day, but I didn´t say a word. Who wants to be the pussy? Not me… but i got at night. 🙂 My best friend found me puking in the bath and offered me some naproxen. I was surprised cause it helped immediately. I was was really fine after 20 minutes and found some sleep.
Glad, that it´s not that bad everytime, but every no and then… *sigh*
We use “Dolormin für Frauen”. It´s active substance is naproxen. That does really work QUICK! My daughter and I are so thankful for it.

This blog could not have come at a more perfect time for me. Just last night I woke up in excruciating pain and felt like I was going to throw up it was so bad. I was crying and ugh- And too thought I was going to die ! Ugh. I don’t care what people say I’ve tried eating healthy and exercise and it still sucks ! The only thing that nursed me through it was Aleve and a hot pad and that still by no means cured my cramps, just made it ok enough where I could fall asleep. Ugh! It’s annoying though that some people don’t understand. I have had to miss work for it in the past and totally have been judged by those who have never experienced a period like that. Annoying

Eat as much dark chocolate as you want during that time of the month! We crave chocolate because it is high in magnesium, a vitamin we lose when we have our cycle..and magnesium helps with cramps! Enjoy 🙂

I know this post is a little older but I feel like I’d comment anyways because I really feel like you shouldn’t (nor should any woman) have to be dealing with that awfulness every month! Deffffinitely go to the doctor because a) as people have mentioned there could be an endometrial issue and b) certain types of birth control will really help. I started taking birth control pills last year and haven’t had a single period since. Doctor says its normal for some people on that pill, and I 100% love not having a period. If anything they can help manage your symptoms:) hope this helps!!

Dear Taralynn,
This is my first comment ever on your Website and I am very sorry for your bad cramps last night!
I dont mean to worry you, but maybe you have had a very early miscarriage. Most birth control pills Work in three different ways to prevent pregnancies: 1) block ovulation, 2) thicken cervix and 3) thin out the Endometrium (lining of the uterus. This is also the reason why women on the pill have a lighter flow). Now it can happen that the first two methods fail and conception happens. The fertilized egg then travels to the uterus where it wants to attach itself to the uterine wall. If this doesnt Work, because the wall is too thin or if it attaches itself but cant “hold on” to the wall because it is too thin, a miscarriage happens within the first two weeks of pregnanies and pretty much feels like a Bad period (more cramps/contraction).
Now of course I hope this wasnt the case with you!
I highly recommend natural ways to deal with contraception, such as NFP, which I love!!! So many women throughout history have Been permanently hurt and died of the effects of hormonal and other birth control methods, such as “the shot”.
Also, increase the amount of plant based Foods. Check out http://www.nutritionsfacts.org which I love as well.
Best of luck!

I love this post! Whenever it’s really bad I call my cousin/BFF and we complain, pop midol and lay on heating pads then be stupid, silly and gross until we laugh enough to feel a little human, because nobody really understands like another woman

I love this post thank you!! All of my friends act like their “time of the month” is wonderful. While I am in a crazy amount of pain each month. Thank you for the encouragement to get through this tough time each month. :))

You poor thing! I’m not a medical professional but the severity of your symptoms sounds like they’re indicative of something else (possibly Endometriosis, like another commenter suggested) or cysts, etc. Either way, I’m so sorry you are feeling pain like that! It sounds intense.

About someone mentioning PMS …once in high school I started yelling at my brother for something small (I think it was leaving the toothpaste cap open) and he said to me “who lit the fuse on your tampon”. When he said it, I was furious, but looking back it was extremely funny

Since I take Ponstan (Mefenamic acid), I don’t have to suffer anymore. As soon I feel the beginning of the pain, I take one pill and it’s ok for the next 8 hours. I take 2 or 3 during the period. I hope you can find it where you live. Kisses.

You should try taking evening primrose oil every day, it helps with the horrible mood swings too! I even do a couple of yoga classes the week before which helps to stretch me out a bit more! I suffer from Endometriosis and found that keeping up fluids, taking ibuprofen and taking the evening primrose oil every day seems to help me when the time comes!
