Chocolate Frosted Dirt Cookies (Dye Free & Gluten-Free)
These Chocolate Frosted Dirt Cookies are perfect for spring and chocolate lovers! They’re thick, soft, and topped with the creamiest chocolate buttercream, then decorated with crunchy cookie crumbles and dye-free gummy worms for the ultimate dirt-cookie look. Kids will LOVE them! (these cookies are gluten-free!) They are so deliciously fudgy!
Chocolate dirt cookies with gummy worms are so fun when you’re a toddler mom!
This time of year, we’re spending most of our days outside, digging in the dirt, prepping for green grass, and soaking up the warmer weather. So, what could be more fitting than Chocolate Frosted Dirt Cookies to match the garden theme? These cookies would have been so perfect for my son’s first birthday party, sprouting to one!
I had so much fun making these cookies with my son! They’re gluten-free (but don’t have to be!), dye-free, and absolutely delicious. The first time I made them was last spring at a garden market, and they were a huge hit—especially since they’re dye-free. Most gummy toppings and sprinkles are loaded with artificial dyes, so these cookies are a great alternative for families looking for a more natural treat!

These cookies would be adorable with mini excavators or dump trucks on top—perfect for a construction-themed birthday party! Or you can go in a different direction with adding pretty butterflies and flowers. In fact, I still need to decide if I’m making Paw Patrol, space, or construction vehicle-themed cupcakes for my son’s third birthday. Don’t ask me how I’m doing. I’m not okay. 😅
I’ve asked him a few times what he wants to do for his birthday—have a party or go to the beach? And every time, he’s voted “go to the beach.” He’s been begging for a beach trip, so we finally booked a spot, and I cannot wait to celebrate with him there! When we get back, we’ll meet up with some of his friends at the pool for cupcakes and his favorite catered—Ilios—to keep the celebration going.
Just by looking at these, you know they’re made for chocolate lovers! But if you want to mix things up, you can use a chocolate chip cookie base or swap the frosting for one of my vanilla frosting recipes. Customize them however you’d like!
I made these gluten-free since one of the kiddos coming over has a gluten allergy, and it was so fun to include him in the treats. Plus, since I’ve been avoiding gluten, I got to enjoy them too—a win-win! I just wish I didn’t take a bite because I wanted to eat them all.
Can I use all-purpose flour for these cookies?
Yes! This chocolate cookie dough is super similar to the base of my marble cookies (that recipe is coming soon!), and I’ve always used regular all-purpose flour for them. So, you don’t have to use gluten-free flour—the swap is a simple 1:1 ratio!

NEW: The Summer Fun Series!
This summer, I’m rolling out something fun for the blog—the “Summer Fun Series!”
When I was a kid, my mom organized a neighborhood group called “Summer Fun Club.” It was a way to give moms a break while keeping kids entertained during summer. It wasn’t hard since we were living in Hawaii at the time, where there were endless outdoor activities. But the concept was genius!
She had about ten moms involved, and they took turns rotating days. Three moms would take all the kids for a half-day activity, giving the other moms a much-needed break. They did this about four times a week, and it was basically a free summer day camp—fun for the kids, a lifesaver for the moms, and no hefty price tag.
But no, that’s not exactly what I’m doing! I just loved the name and the idea behind it.
For my Summer Fun Series, I’ll be blogging four times a week with daily summer updates—going old-school blog style! I know finding things to do with toddlers in the summer can be tough, so I want to share mini recap blogs with everything we do—crafts, books we are reading, picnics, swimming, pool snacks, meals, learning activities, projects, gardening, and more.
I’ll still be posting recipes in between, but I can’t wait to bring more daily life updates to the blog.

Instructions
Baking Chocolate Cookie (gluten-free)
- Using an electric mixer with a paddle attachment, beat the room temperature butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar together on medium-high speed until light and fluffy. Mix in the eggs and vanilla until fully combined (about 1 minute.)
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the gluten-free flour (or all-purpose flour), unsweetened cocoa powder, baking soda, and sea salt.
- Slowly add the dry ingredients to the mixer with the wet ingredients. Mix on low speed until combined. If the dough is too dry, add 1 tablespoon of heavy cream or whole milk.Refrigerate dough for 1-24 hours.
- Once the dough is chilled, it's time to form the cookies! Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Scoop and roll the dough into balls (about 90 grams each) and place them 3 inches apart. For shaping, gently roll the dough into balls and lightly press them down.
- Bake the cookies for 15-17 minutes. The centers will be gooey, but allow them to continue cooking on the baking sheet.
Chocolate Buttercream
- Microwave the butter until melted. Mix in the sifted powdered sugar, followed by the milk, vanilla, and sifted cocoa powder until smooth and creamy. If the mixture is too runny, add more powdered sugar. If it's too thick, add more milk. For an extra fluffy texture, use an electric mixer.
Decorate the Dirt Cookies!
- Add about 3 tablespoons of chocolate buttercream to each room-temperature cookie. Top with cookie crumbles, dye-free green sprinkles, and dye-free gummy worms.
My son thought decorating the cookies was the highlight! I’m so lucky that he loves baking with me. He also gets a kick out of hitting all the switches on the electric mixer, though we’ve definitely had a few mishaps along the way!
Storing your cookies:
-
At Room Temperature:
- If you plan to eat them within a few days, store the cookies in an airtight container at room temperature. They’ll stay fresh for up to 3-4 days.
-
In the Fridge:
- For longer storage, place the cookies in an airtight container and store them in the fridge. They’ll last for about a week. Let them come to room temperature before serving, or enjoy them chilled!
-
Freezing:
- If you want to keep the cookies for an extended period, you can freeze them. Place the cookies in a single layer on a baking sheet and freeze them for a few hours until firm. Then, transfer them to a freezer-safe container or zip-top bag. They’ll stay fresh for up to 2-3 months. To thaw, leave them at room temperature for a few hours, and they’ll be good as new!

Made these with my kids today. They were a hit! I used regular all purpose flour as we are not GF. They are really yummy and so fun!
Hi, Megan!
Thank you so much for the review! 🙂 I’m so glad you had fun making these with the kids. I’ve made them with regular flour many times for markets, and they are so good (even better than the GF version!) xo
I made these with my kindergarten class for a garden project. The kids went nuts over them! I made them a tad smaller and used regular flour as there are no allergies in our classroom. I look forward to trying more of your fun recipes in 2026!
