I once read a quote that said: “I love it when someone else pays full price first.” Now ain’t that the truth? If you haven’t noticed, I’ve never been a girl after fancy things. The word “Gucci” and “Chanel” mean nothing to me. Some of you may have exited out of my blog after reading that, but I get more of a thrill out of buying things for cheap. I bought my car used and plan to drive it until it’s a hazard. All of my tennis skirts? Ebay. I’d rather keep my money in the bank and not on my closet floor.
I did a little experiment a couple of days ago. I put a skirt on Instagram and didn’t link where it was from. I had over 44 DM’s asking about my skirt and where they could purchase it. Little did they know, I bought it off the Goodwill rack for $2.99. The fact that I got it for cheap and someone complimented me on it, was way more awarding than throwing away a ton of money on a designer shirt or bag. A lot of the clothes I wear in my blogs are actually from Goodwill, eBay, and other secondhand stores around my city. One of my best friends, Becca, is the one who inspired me to second-hand shop. She makes everything look so vintage and cute. Thrift shopping makes you think outside of the box and get creative with your new pieces.
Not only does thrift shopping save money, but it also helps save the earth. If you’d like to read more about how thrift shopping saves the planet, please check out this article. It explains how secondhand shopping can lower your carbon footprint, helps water preservation, reduces chemical pollution, decreases landfill waste, and encourages recycling!
This year, my spending habits have changed. I’m so proud of how mindful my purchases have been, and I feel so more in control of where I put my money. If you haven’t read my post about the “no spend challenge” and “not buying stuff” then please do that! I know you’re thinking “I thought you weren’t buying stuff.” And you’re right. Technically this is me buying stuff, but it’s me being smarter about the things that I buy, and I’m doing it in hopes that’ll inspire someone else out there to shop secondhand. For everything I purchased at Goodwill, I made sure to donate the same amount of items. I went through the things I didn’t wear this past winter and added them to the donation pile.
Now, let’s talk about style. I like to get my inspiration off of Pinterest. I had noticed that I had been pinning a lot of skirts lately, but I only had a few in my closet. They are the winter skirts you wear with tights, so I was out of luck. I decided to stop into the Goodwill up the road and check out their racks. I was blown away with their selection of skirts! I had ideas running through my mind of what I’d pair them with and where I’d wear them to.
I think skirts are cute when they are dressed down into casual wear. I love adding a plain t-shirt, a sweater, a simple tank top, or a bodysuit to them. Keep reading to see how I styled six skirts to fit my casual style!
Please let me know in the comments if you’d like to see me do more of these “thrifty style series!”
Skirt #1 is an asymmetrical midi snow leopard skirt with a layered bottom. You’ll notice right away that asymmetrical skirts are my favorite. Since turning 28, I feel like I’ve been holding more weight in my thighs and lower abdomen and these look the most flattering on my body type. You can take those pencil skirts and throw them right in the dumpster. “It’ll be a no for me dog!”
I paired this skirt with a black bodysuit and black wedges. Shoutout to my mom for letting me borrow her shoes for these photos! My mom is the shoe queen, and since we’re about the same size, her closet is heaven for me. I kept it simple and comfortable.
Skirt #2 is an asymmetrical midi watercolor print skirt. When I saw this skirt on the rack, I knew it was going to be a hit or miss for me. Surprisingly, I ended up loving it! It was a high waisted skirt that fit me in the all right places.
I paired this skirt with one of my favorite white off the shoulder tops (that I’ve owned for four years), brown wedges, and a jean jacket. This would be a fun skirt to wear on vacation, or to church!
Skirt #3 is a floral print asymmetrical midi with a gorgeous flow to it! This one was by far my favorite and fit my style so well. I would have paid full price for this skirt it was at Nordstrom or somewhere else. This skirt is going to be glued to me all Spring.
I paired it with some camel wedges, a camel over the shoulder bag, and a white long-sleeved t-shirt. I saw the girls on Pinterest tie the bottom of the t-shirt into a knot, so I tied the bottom of the t-shirt into a knot (praying you got that reference!😂 Let me know in the comments if you did!) I’m thinking about taking this outfit with me on our weekend getaway.
Skirt #4 patterned maxi. When I saw this skirt, I didn’t think twice. I looked at the size and when I saw that it would fit, I immediately threw it into my arms with the others. It screamed spring to me! Want to know a fun fact? This is the first maxi skirt I have ever owned.
Sometimes it’s fun to add a pair of sneakers to a skirt or a dress to make it extra casual. I paired this colorful maxi skirt with lavender sneakers. The skirt had lavender in the print, so it made the color pop! I wore the same white top from skirt #2 and kept it simple. I loved the way this skirt flowed and the sparkles it gave off when the sun hit it. And can I get an AMEN for high waisted skirts?
Skirt #5 is an above the knee asymmetrical skirt. I especially loved the design on this skirt because it was casual and paired perfectly with a basic t-shirt! If you know me, then you know all I wear is basic t-shirts and shorts during the summer. I’m excited to change it up and start adding skirts to the mix.
I paired this skirt with some sandals (from target), a tied white t-shirt, and a jean jacket! I could have stayed in this outfit all day because of how cool and comfortable I felt. It was about 70-degrees outside, and this skirt was so light and airy!
Skirt #6 is an asymmetrical midi with polka dots with a small slit and a fun layered flair to the bottom!
This skirt was also one of my favorites. I think I got lucky with finding this gem at Goodwill for $2.99! I paired this skirt with my mom’s shoes, the white long sleeve t-shirt, and an over-the-shoulder bag.
I hope this blog inspires you to go out and shop secondhand this spring! I love seeing what people find at thrift stores, so I’d love to see your Goodwill style! Tag me in your photos, and I’ll share them on my next thrifty series post!
Questions or you!
- What type of clothing should my next “thrift series” feature?
- Which skirt do you like the best?
- What is your favorite item you’ve bought secondhand?
Emily says
I totally got your Mean Girls reference lol!!
I loved this post, and I love thrift shopping. You should absolutely continue it. I have gotten so many sweaters there, but since sweater weather is over, I think your next post should be on kitchen items. I have gotten some of my favorite mugs there! In college, my friends and I bought shot glasses from someone’s wedding- I have no idea why, but they became our favorite and we always laughed when we used them!
My favorite skirt is #3 as well, but I really like the pink/purple maxi. It’s a close second. The colors just pop and make me so happy for spring!
Keep on blogging, lady! I have followed you for years now and I have loved to see you and your blog grow. I really look forward to your posts! You’re so down to earth and that’s nice to see nowadays 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Emily!
Glad you got it! 😆
I had so much fun with it so I think I will! I’m trying so hard to not buy kitchen items, but I think it could be a fun post to do and I could just donate the stuff to a shelter. One of my favorite Christmas mugs is actually from Goodwill. I think it’s so funny you guys bought someone else’s wedding shot glasses! hahahaha that’s too funny!
That was my same reaction with the maxi!
Thanks so much for your kind words!!!!

I love Goodwill and second hand stores!!! I haven’t been in a while so I think it’s time to check them out again soon 🙂 So happy to see you posting your great finds and promoting a great resource!
1. Dresses!
2. I think it’s a tie between #3 and #5 for me. I’m a sucker for floral prints and a black & white colored scheme.
3. I have found many treasures in second hand stores. It would probably have to be my fleeced lined jean jacket (with the tags still on it!) or my faux leather jacket.
These are beautiful shots of you! I’m really love this hair length on you. Sending my best!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Ariel!
It’s so fun and rewarding to thrift shop! I hope more people jump on the train.
Dresses will be a fun one to do!

You are the thrifting queen! Great finds!
I’m going to have to look into this color of the week thing!

I love love love that you buy second hand clothes too! Since I live in Switzerland we don’t have Goodwill stores here, but I often buy stuff at similar stores 🙂 I never commented before but I check in to your blog everyday and it immediately makes me happy when I find a new article.. thank you for all the inspiration 🙂
Rebecca
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Rebecca!
Kyle and I have been planning a trip to Switzerland for next year!! You’ll have to let me know what we cannot miss!!!
Thank you for stopping by my blog! 😃
Rebecca says
Hi Tara!
Oh wow that’s amazing!! I think you will love it, our nature is amazing 🙂 In which season will you be here? The activitys are completely different depending on the season. We have soo many rivers and lakes to swim, summer hikes and in winter snowy mountains of course
Citys:
-I live in Zurich and I think it’s a must to visit 😉 amazing river (Limmat) and lake of zurich to swim in summer, cool cafes and restaurants, you can do it all by bike or even walking.
-Bern is our capitol and I think it’s such a charming city, I love to go there too. More alternative than Zurich!
-Many tourists go to visit Luzern, which is absolutely beautiful too – I just think it’s a litte touristy – but if offers great photo spots!
Getting out of the city:
If you want to do a weekend of hiking, make sure to take reservations months before you go. It’s really popular even for swiss people to get out of the city.
-Anenhütte (kind of a hike to thet there but sooo cool. check out their website). sleep there for at least a night.
-Aescher-Wildkirchli (just for a day, really cool building, built in a rock). You can either hike or take the funicular.
-Go to the Matterhorn, most famous mountain of switzerland (touristy but still worth it)
-Take the Pilatus Funicular (starts close from Luzern) and goes up super high!
Zurich:
-franzos (best croissants in town) -> oldtown
-schober (great place for pastry, really old) -> oldtown
-climb the stairs of the Grossmünster (church) to have an amazing view over the city ->oldtown
-Right across is a nice place called “Lindenhof”, you have a nice view over the river and the oldtown. Grab a coffee, watch the people playing chess and just enjoy the view.
-5 more minutes to walk from the church and you will reach the lake of zurich. just pretty!
-walk down the Bahnhofstrasse (famous shopping street)
-have a drink in the bar of our highest building, the “Prime Tower” – great view
-you want to get out of the city? walk up the “Üetliberg”. The only little mountain in Zurich. You can start from “Triemli”, than it’s about an 1hour walk or you take a little train almost to the top, than its only a 10min walk.
COFFEE:
-Vi Cafe (they have like 7 little windows around the city, from where they sell amazing coffee. my favorite!)
-Cafe Bonheur (this is where people from zurich spend their sunny days off)
-Mame (yes yes yes!)
hungry?
-co chin chin (vietnamese)
-Hiltl (first and best vegetarian restaurant in zurich)
-reithalle (more traditional)
-maison blunt (brunch)
have a drink..
-Gerolds Garten! one of the best and coolest outdoor spots to have a drink or a snack!
there’s so much more I could recommend you haha but I think I should stop here 😉 maybe I can help you out more if I know about the season and how much time you have.. all the best!

Glad you liked this series!!
Lola says
Can you posts where your shoes/sandals are from?
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Lola!
Here is the link for the black sandals I had on. The others are like three years old lol
Jenna says
That watercolor skirt is adorable!!!
You should do tops next or cardigans! I LOVE goodwill, but they have jacked up the prices in our area so bad. It used to be around $2 for a shirt and now its almost $5. I know it’s still a steal, but dang.
My favorite item I’ve bought 2nd hand is definitely a copper pan. Those really expensive ones, I found one at Goodwill for $5 and it’s amazing! Definitely cleaned it like 6 times before using though!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Jenna!
I thought so too! I was happy that I went with it.
I know that the L.A. Goodwill got SUPER expensive!! I feel like since most of the stuff is just donated to them, they should keep the prices the same.
That is a great find!!
Haley says
Do you make your own presets?
Taralynn McNitt says
I do make my own!:)
Milena says
Hi Taralynn!
Just yesterday I was looking for some skirts online and today I found out that you wrote a post about it LOL 😀
The prices are amazingly cheap, I wish I had this Goodwill store in Spain. Finally I found a cheap and nice midi skirt on Amazon 🙂
My favorites are number 1, 5 and 6. The purple one is gorgeous!
The tied bottom of the T-shit is a great idea and I also saw it on Pinterest 🙂
You should definitely do more posts like that!
Regards,
Milena
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Milena!
That is too funny! Oh, man! Goodwill needs to go international.
The tied shirts look great with high waisted pants/skirts.
Thanks for stopping by to read! xo

Loved this post and it’s why I have followed your for years, Tumblr– you have never gotten caught up in the world of trendiness, show-offs, Kylie Jenner lips and all that seems to be so exhaustingly common these days. You’re so refreshing.
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Aileen!
Thank you so much. That really means a lot to me! I feel like that whole type of social-media influencing looks exhausting. My goal is to keep my blog as purest to my real life, even it gets a little boring sometimes. I love connecting with women who are just like me! ♥️
Avalon says
I gave up clothes shopping for my New Year’s Resolution and I have only broken it once to buy a wrap to wear over my dress for my friend’s wedding (I was a bridesmaid). I thought it would be difficult to give up shopping, but it has been a profound relief.
Congrats for thrift shopping! Like you said, it is so much better for the environment and it is a lot easier on the wallet. I think this post is such a clever idea and I appreciate the way you modeled each skirt with different looks.
What type of clothing should my next “thrift series” feature? > I agree with a person above who mentioned dresses. I love that idea! I think accessories could be fun too. I’m not really an accessory person, but I might be more inclined if they were more affordable.
Which skirt do you like the best? >#1 the leopard print. I love animal prints 🙂
What is your favorite item you’ve bought secondhand? > I used to work in retail and one of my favorite brands was Bailey 44. Their clothes are so sexy and they really know the shape of a woman’s body. I bought two ruched tops on Poshmark for less than half of what they would sell for in the store and they are my absolute favorite. I can’t go on Poshmark anymore though or I can get myself into trouble haha.
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Avalon!
I agree! I think giving up shopping has been pretty easy. I’ve broken a few times to buy thrifted things, but I’m not upset about it.
I love your feedback and cannot wait to do another series! I’ve never been an accessories person either, so maybe I’ll pair that with the dresses!
Sounds like a good find! I’ve never been on Poshmark, but I feel like I’d get myself in trouble too! hahaha
Kali S. says
Yesssss! They all look adorable on you. I’ve been an avid thrifter for years and most people would never guess that I don’t spend $120+ on LuLuLemon 😂 I get basic items at our local shops/goodwill and buy the higher end second hand items at the boutique thrift stores. They average $5-15 based on brand; but it still saves hundreds! I steam them & use Dryell. Makes them like new! 💕 cheers 🥂 hoping you continue the series!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Kali!
Thank you so much!!! That is so awesome and inspiring! Love the Dryell tip! 😃

This is such a fun post. I have been reading your blog for a while now and I love your weekly recaps and your gorgeous food photos. You definitely have a talent for writing and taking beautiful pictures! Thifting is something that I was kind of embarrassed about as a teenager- but now it is one of my favorite things to do! I try to go without too many expectations and then I am almost happily surprised by I find. My teenager daughter now loves it too and it is a great activity for us to do together. I’d love to see a vacation capsule wardrobe next in this series. My favorite skirt/outfit was #5- but they were all really well styled. My favorite ever thrift store find was when I was in college- I found a black blazer and all the buttons had fell off. I sewed on some gold star buttons and I loved that blazer and wore it all the time!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Kristi!
Thanks so much 😊 You are truly the sweetest and your kind comment just made my day.
I agree about being embarrassed as a teenager to thrift. I was the same way and would NOT step foot into our local Goodwill. Thankfully, most of us grow out of that mindset! I love the idea of going in without expectations. I love that you made that blazer even better than the original! You’re awesome!!
xo
Carly says
Love that you highlighted the impact on the environment! That’s why I almost exclusively shop 2nd hand. People are always amazed when I tell them my outfit is thrifted. I’d love to see more posts about all your finds and how you wear them…maybe specifically pants?? I seem to ride the struggle bus when it comes to finding good jeans/pants 2nd hand.
(That polka dot skirt is to die for!)
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Carly!
I was blown away after reading what the clothing industry does to the environment. It’s rewarding telling people that isn’t it? I feel like we all ride that struggle bus with pants lol But I’ll give it a shot!!!
I was amazed when I found that polka dog skirt at GW!

taralynn love these outfits youre so gorgeous!! my favorite skirts would be the leopard print and the black polka dot. most of my clothes are thrifted minus cheap basics (plain tees, cardigans, jeans) you can get at forever 21 or h&m. my favorite thrifted pieces would be a water color ripped tank top with roses and a butterfly/skull in the middle or an 80s style fuschia long sleeve top with black polka dots! please make more fashion posts or even DIY fashion posts like the minnie mouse shirt you customized :).
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Ruby!
Thank you so much 😃 You’re the sweetest!!! Sounds like we have the same wardrobe! I love my cheap basics! 😃 They are so versatile. That sounds like such a cool item you picked up!!
I will definitely do more DIY!
Julie says
You inspired me to stop at Goodwill after work today. The skirts were a bust, but I found some super comfy track pants to wear when I’m working outside in the yard/planting flowers. That way, I don’t have to worry about messing up my newer ones, and I won’t feel bad if I get them dirty. Score!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Julie! Love that you found something! 😊 I recommend stopping in a few different Goodwills. Some are better than others for sure!
Anne says
What brand are those black shoes you borrowed from your mom? I really like them and you’re lucky you can share. My feet are bigger than all of my friends and family so I’ve never been able to do that.
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Anne! Here’s the link to them! 😃 They come in a few different colors. It’s so strange because I used to be two sizes bigger than my mom’s. Her’s went up a size and mine when down a size and now it’s a perfect match lol
JJ says
Hi Tara ! Could you do a post on how you find things your clothes on eBay? I find it super overwhelming !!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, JJ!
When I’m searching on eBay, it’s usually for something specific.
I never go there to browse, but always go in with a game plant. For example, when I’m trying to find my tennis skirts, I type in “women’s tennis skirts” and then I’ll go to the side and start selecting filters like size, color, brand, new, etc! 😃
JJ says
Just realized my comment made no sense haha. Ok that’s super helpful, will try ! Thank you 😃
Taralynn McNitt says
Hahaha! I got it 😉
Kelly Hoffman says
I got your reference! Army pants and flip flops 😉
Alaina says
I like using ebay to find specific brands or styles of something to save me time in thrifting. I’ve personally veered into 14 plus size territory so I don’t want to spend a bunch of money on clothes I may not wear for very long. I came across Lane Bryant jeans that worked well for me in the thrift store for like, $3 and I wanted a skinny jean version so I looked on ebay. Knowing a brand/size that will fit is key for making ebay work for you so you don’t have to deal with return shipping if you don’t like it. I think ebay allows you to return, but it can be really hard on small sellers profits.
Ellaine says
I am going to Goodwill this weekend after reading this post! You made all of those skirts look gorgeous.

Good luck! 😃 & thankkk you so much!

I love this new series! I go to the University of Illinois and have a hard time saving my money with school and working at Starbucks. I appreciate you shining a light on secondhand shopping and making me feel better about it. I can’t afford to dress like the sorority girls and it makes me sad.
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Emily!
You are doing great working hard and attending a great school! I promise what you wear doesn’t matter at all so don’t let that get you down! I think it’s cooler when someone can pull off thrifty clothes!
Please email me because I have a ton of clothes that I could send to you! I am getting ready to toss some jean shorts, tanks, shirts, and sundresses that I don’t wear anymore. XO

I think when you say “asymmetrical” you mean “A-line.” None of those skirts looked like they had an asymmetrical hem, but they all looked like A-line skirts to me.
Not trying to be critical – just pointing out that the cuts appeared to be different than you described them.
Lila says
I would like to read more of these thrifting adventures. It would be fun to do with spring or summer dresses as well or with a mix of stuff: clothes, home decor etc.
Alaina says
Great post! I love thrifting. It’s great to go in with a general idea of what you’re looking for. I have so many good thrift stores around me, I used to go shopping way more often and it got out of hand, lol.
Maureen says
Taralynn, I love that you make sure to donate the same number of pieces you buy! That’s really important in keeping your closet manageable!
I do most of my thrift shopping online, usually through Thredup, but I also just joined Poshmark. My favorite pieces so far are the J Crew dress pants & cardigans that I wear to work regularly (for which I would never pay full price).
Thank you for naming Pinterest as your inspiration! Sometimes it’s hard to style your own things without outside influence. I’d love to see how you tackle Spring dresses as we head toward Easter (if you celebrate) and graduation season!

Holy WOW, Tara! You genuinely impress me more and more each post. These outfits are incredible!!!! I LOVE midi and maxi skirts, but for $2.99?! I’d buy 10! I loveeee these looks. Please feature some graphic tees in your next thrifty series!
I loveeee the floral skirts the most. My favorite. ALso, my favorite things I’ve purchased secondhand have to be a few of my graphic tee or a pair of ASICS sneakers (brand new; retailed for $100+ and got them for $8) 🙂 You never know what cool stuff you’ll find!

Ah I’m just now seeing this post! Our styles are so different, but I love the inspiration behind this. I’m really getting back into skirts this spring! I’ve been craving a more feminine look lately.
My best secondhand clothing item (not a purchase because a friend gave it to me when she was clearing out her wardrobe) is a black blazer with rolled up sleeves. It fits like it was made for me and I wear it ALL. THE. TIME. It works for both work and causal outfits.
Thanks for promoting such a great message 🙂
