Hi Everyone!
I’m finally winding down for the night with a cup of hot lemon ginger tea while Grumples sleeps peacefully at my feet. The candles are burning and everything is turned off (other than my computer of course) so I can listen to the thunderstorms roll in. Summer storms are so therapeutic and they’re the best to fall asleep to. They’re also good for blogging. It’s been a while since I’ve done a round up post of things I’ve been up to or things I’ve been eating. I figured tonight would be a good time to do that.
This post will be filled with weeks of eats, activities and a whole lot of Grumples!
Today was a really great day. I’ve been in a weird rut the past couple of weeks, but I’m blaming it all on the dog days of summer. I think it’s normal for people to go through periods of time feeling “off” with no explanation. I’ve been mentally and physically exhausted and I’ve been taking it easy for a while. Maybe that’s why they call it “the dog days of summer”, because all you want to do is hang out with your dog.
The best part about taking it easy is spending time with my best friend in the entire world, Mr. Grumples. We have been waking up early so we can walk before it gets too hot. Bringing bottles of water for him is the key!
We woke up 4:30 am yesterday for our walk…(yeah not doing that again.)
He quit on me after two miles because it was too hot. I let him sit in the shade with some water for a bit and then we walked back. I love the cooler months because he NEVER quits on me and will walk forever.
I decided to make some protein pancakes to go with my coffee for breakfast. These pancakes had 3 egg whites, 1 egg yolk, 1 small banana, 1 tablespoon chia seeds, 1 tablespoon hemp seeds, 1 packet stevia, and 2 tablespoons vanilla whey protein powder.
I grease a pan before adding the pancake mix and cook it on medium-high heat. These turned out better than any banana-egg pancake I’ve ever made.
I added agave & sliced almonds!
Three jumbo pancakes!

It started pouring down rain during my run tonight, so I hurried back and did a 45 minute Jillian Michaels Cardio Circuit. It’s literally one of the best videos for an at home workout and I’ve been doing it for years. Grumples has a crush on Jillian.
I never posted my travel snacks & dinner for my trip to D.C.! Readers always ask me what I bring on road trips and I keep it pretty simple. I packed a little baggy of Pumpkin Spice Cheerios, Larabars, a banana, roots hummus, chopped cucumber, carrots, and a container of ground turkey mixed with rice.
Becca packed a box of Luna Protein Bars and we ate them the entire trip.
We stopped around 7pm (2 hours to go) to have dinner. Becca ordered a salad at Panera bread and I ate my packed dinner and snacks. Cucumbers & hummus are my favorite. I also love cucumbers with guacamole during football games or parties.
I headed to Trader Joe’s to stock the fridge back up when I got back from D.C. Trader Joe’s is cheaper than my usual grocery store. I love all the new items they carry and everyone is always so nice in there!
I’ve been completely obsessed with these No Cow Bars lately. I’ve mentioned them a couple of times, but I can’t get enough. You can get them at most CVS stores or on Amazon. The raspberry truffle is my favorite so far.
Shooting all the way back to August 22nd…(better late than never?)
Breakfast: Cinnamon spice oatmeal, blueberries with honey, & two eggs over easy!
I’m still loving this plate designed by Mud & Stone Studio from my trip to Canada!
One of my go-to afternoon snacks: carrots & hummus.
Dinner: Steamed broccoli, ground turkey, butternut squash, and cauliflower rice topped with figs.
Dessert: Mixed fruit! Strawberries, grapes, pineapple and cantaloupe.
Tuesday the 23rd’s breakfast.
Oatmeal with cinnamon, nutmeg, honey, almonds and hazelnuts.
Afternoon snack: coconut milk latte made with my Nespresso machine, and a green juice from Trader Joes. This is the best juice I’ve found. It’s not filled with sugars and it tastes really good.
Lunch: hummus, carrots, grapes, ground turkey, cauliflower rice, and butternut squash.
I make a huge container of ground turkey every Monday to eat throughout the week.
I keep lunch light because I usually run afterward.
I ran 3.5 miles in the 95-degree heat and then cooled down with a protein shake. This shake had unsweetened cashew milk, ice, vanilla protein powder, cinnamon, 1 date, and 1/2 a banana.
Dinner: Romaine, cucumber, butternut squash, ground turkey, cauliflower rice, almonds and avocado!
August 24th!
I woke up at 6 am so I could run at the trails before it got too hot. After my run, I had Trader joe’s dark chocolate, hazelnuts and a granola bar.
Breakfast: two eggs over easy, coconut milk yogurt with honey and cinnamon, and a sweet potato.
Snack: strawberries, grapes, banana, cantaloupe and pineapple.
Lunch: hummus, carrots, crab (had a weird craving for imitation crab…it happens) avocado and a piece of dark chocolate with hazelnuts. If you’re a fan of Ferrero Rochers chocolates, try eating a piece of dark chocolate with hazelnuts! It kind of tastes like one, but healthier.
Aimee and I went to spin class together on Wednesday night. This was one of the best spin classes I’ve ever been to. The music selection was awesome. Spinning to Drake? count me in! I also loved the weights and strength training incorporated. I was bike #21…NBD.
We grabbed Juice Bar for a post workout treat. I ordered the Matcha Green Tea with protein powder added.
I dusted off the neglected juicer on Thursday morning and made a breakfast juice.
It had cucumber, carrots, figs, one bag of kale, zucchini, apples, lime, and ginger. I always run 16 ounces of water through the juicer to pick up any extra juice and for more hydration.
I headed out for a six miler! I was glistening.
I looked up while I was stretching and saw this beautiful heart in the clouds.
It was my mom’s birthday on Thursday, so I headed to their place for dinner. We weren’t celebrating until Friday, but I still wanted to be with her. We had sweet potato mash, salmon, green beans, squash and seafood paella.
I made dinner for my mom on Friday night and we celebrated her birthday. You can find my meatloaf recipe here! I’ll post the other appetizer recipe soon!
It was hot out on Saturday but still breezy…perfect for a hike. Kyle and I had intentions of driving to Asheville to hike, but we were both pretty tired from staying up late with my parents and didn’t feel like driving all the way there. We settled for Crowder’s mountain.
I have never sweated that much in my entire life. I’m one of those weird people that will not sweat during a workout until I’m done. I was DRENCHED. It was disgusting and I couldn’t wait to shower.
♥
Like a like a painting
We stopped at the little farmer’s stand before heading out to my parent’s house. They watched Grumples while we spent the afternoon hiking. I brought my mom some fresh peaches and my dad some sweet corn.
Kyle and I had an early dinner at Hakanah Sushi Bar in Baxter Village.
I had the house salad with ginger dressing and the lettuce chicken wraps.
Happy puppy!
We watched about five episodes of Chopt and then the movie Burnt! It’s the cooking movie with Bradley Cooper (only way I know how to describe it) and it was so good! It makes you want to learn cooking techniques, appreciate chefs and eat food! I was hungry after watching it, so I made some eggs for a late night snack.
I went to church early Sunday morning. I also learned that your nails marbleize if you add hairspray to them while drying them with the blowdryer. They looked so cool!
I met up with Becca for breakfast after church.
I’ve never been so happy to have coffee (not true.) I was super tired on Sunday, which is odd because I had the best sleep of my life on Saturday night. I passed out and slept like a baby.
I ordered two eggs over easy, a side of bacon, fresh fruit and a whole wheat English muffin.
Becca and I went to the gym after breakfast and then did eight miles at the Riverwalk!
Of course more coffee…
*this was after we chugged two bottles of smart water.
I made ground turkey taco salads on Sunday night for dinner and they were super delicious! I’ll be posting that recipe soon as well.
Monday morning breakfast: 3 egg omelet, green onion, havarti cheese, and sweet potatoes. The Dandelion Market got me hooked on havarti cheese in my omelets.
I need to breakup with ketchup. 🙁
I made homemade chicken tenders on Monday to eat throughout the week. I used my chicken nugget recipe.
I also made a side of steamed broccoli and a marscapone balsamic fig sauce.
I headed out for a four mile night walk after dinner with Becca. The sky was on fire. We live for our night walks so we can talk and catch up on life.
I was definitely experiencing the rut feeling in the morning. I decided to head out for a 30 mile bike ride to shake it. I love going fast and feeling the wind. It always puts me in a good mood.
I still had a crazy burst of energy and so I went for a six mile run after my bike ride. It’s so weird to run after a ride because your legs feel all wobbly. Have you ever walked after taking off your ice skates? It kind of feels like that.
Grumples and I headed to his vet in the afternoon for his checkup and shots.
He is 10 lbs overweight…:(
He doesn’t walk as much in the summer because it’s so hot and he quits on me. I don’t want him overweight, so we have been waking up at 6 am and walking 3 miles and then we walk at night. I’m hoping we can get those ten pounds off by November.
The morning skies are so worth it.
I met up with Becca on Wednesday night for a coffee date after the gym.
I had a coconut milk latte. Did you know Starbucks has wine now?
Kyle and I watched the finale of The Night of and I am still thinking about it…if you guys haven’t seen the show, watch it now. It’s one of the BEST shows I have ever seen. The acting, the picture, the artistic angles, the script, the story, EVERYTHING…
Questions for you!
- What are you up to this weekend?
- I want to do more DIY. What DIY projects would you like to see?
- How do you dig yourself out of a rut?
- OK…I need your help. What hairstyle # should I go for? I’m in a huge hair rut and it’s at the “can’t do anything with it” stage.

I have almost all of these pinned on Pinterest!! My next hair move is #5, I’m currently outgrowing #2. Are you getting just the cut or also going to get some color with it? Love the pictures and the food!!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi Peyton!
I kind of want both! I’m very openminded at this point and want something new. I’m so tired of my dry summer hair! Need a change 😀
& thank you!
Amanda says
I think #2, #3, or #6 would look best on you! The best way to decide which hairstyle you want is to think of how it will look when its natural, curly, and straight and determine if you will like the cut each of those ways. You will get tired of a hair cut that your ALWAYS have to style.
PS – love your blogs! I want to cuddle grumples so badly lmao my pups would absolutely love him! I’m only about an hour and a half away from you. Maybe on of these days you can do a meet up for nearby followers! 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi Amanda!
I love all of those looks…especially #2 so I think I’ll slowly transition into that. & that is such a true statement. My hair is pretty wavy.
& THANK YOU! Grumples is a big cuddle bug!
A meet n greet would be fun!
xo
Amanda says
I love #5 and you would look great with that cut and color. I am currently trying to figure out what to do with my hair too. I like to change it up so I’ve been stalking Pinterest for some fun hair ideas.
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi Amanda!
Thank you. I always feel like changing my hair in the fall. I did it last year too!
Pinterest is the BEST for hair inspiration.

What are you up to this weekend?
– I need some major relaxation time! I plan on doing lots of things poolside while I can! I will be traveling a lot for work in the fall so I need to enjoy the summer weather while I can! (even though it has been unbelievably hot here…)
I want to do more DIY. What DIY projects would you like to see?
– My current things that need revamping- changing the look of my bed with fun throw pillows and fun wall art! I think DIY things to breathe new life into a room in your house would be fun!
How do you dig yourself out of a rut?
– I was in a MAJOR rut May-July that I just couldn’t shake. Actually… I started your July fitness challenge on 7/25 (I’m always late on jumping on the bandwagon… oops!) and I have been keeping a journal of all the workouts I do! I am actually seeing the progress I’ve made in the past 30+ days! I have also been taking LOTS of bubble baths! Going to the gym and exercising 4-5 days a week and following it up with a bubble bath has made me so much happier, with myself! Find new things that make you smile! Me time and really focusing on my own physical, mental and spiritual health!
OK…I need your help. What hairstyle # should I go for? I’m in a huge hair rut and it’s at the “can’t do anything with it” stage.
– #2 is SO fun!! You can do so much with it. I am in a hair rut too… My hair is just so straight and lifeless… I hate it! I think I am going to cut it next week to the length of #2!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi Bethany!
I need to start soaking up the pool time before it closes for the summer! I never take advantage of it in September because I’m usually over the heat, but I end up missing it by December!! I hope you get to relax and enjoy that time over the weekend! The best thing about traveling in the fall is all the views! Love the changing of the leaves.
Home decor DIY is the best. I want to do some fall ones:)
Love fitness challenges because they help my rut! running and gym sessions help for sure. The endorphins are so worth it.
I want to slowly transition into number 2! I love that look so much.
I wish my hair was straight! i have crazy curls/waves!

2, 5 & 7 are my favorite! I totally feel you on the hair phase too…I feel like mine get’s so flat and “blah” so quickly!
Also – STARBUCKS HAS WINE!? Day made! haha
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi Hayley!
I love all of those looks too.
Mine is just getting frizzy and blah! It turns a weird reddish color at the end of the summer from the sun.
Some starbucks do!!

#8 I love your hair and hate to see you cut it, so I’m choosing the longer option. 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
🙂 Thanks Selina!
Anne-Alexandra says
I love number 1 and 5! They don’t look like they need to much maintenance. 😉
I love your outfit you had to go to church, it’s really pretty and chic. 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
I really like number one so I may go for that first and transition into the others!
& thank you so much! xo xo

I remember when you had blonde years ago and you ROCKED it. Seriously, it looked so good! My vote is 2! Obviously you look beautiful as a brunette, too, but the best way out of a hair rut is to do something drastic ? Cant wait to see what you choose!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi Lindsey!
Thanks so much! It was a lot of fun but A LOT OF WORK!!!
It’ll be a hard decision!

1. Going home to my hometown to visit my boyfriend and family. I’m super excited because we are going to the drive in theatre tonight for a movie, and I’ve never been to a drive in!
2. Honestly I love seeing any of your projects! You’re very creative. The wood projects with your dad are always amazing!
3. Digging out of a rut can be so HARD. But I find that taking a break from facebook and things and cozying up with my pets and having a beer (or tea depending on the mood) and watching shows I loved as a kid somehow helps me. I don’t know if it’s because it reminds me of a time when life wasn’t stressful, but it sure works.
4. I love #2! Girl, if you are lucky enough to have hair that will get that wavy, tussled look, I think you’d ROCK IT. I would kill to get my hair to be anything but stick straight haha 🙂 great post, as per usual!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi Anna!
That will be such a fun weekend. I used to go to the drive-in movie theater when I lived in Chicago!
I think my dad and I are going to make a DIY coffee wrack.
I do the same sometimes. Cuddling up with grumples and watching older films!
Thanks! I may do something like that slowly!!
xo
Katelyn says
Enjoyed reading your recap and meal posts, it’s given me some new ideas for snacks and meals! Plus Grumples is so stinking cute!
I am doing a yoga event tonight-it’s right on the water and will be a gorgeous backdrop for outdoor yoga! I have some cook outs, dinner with family, some pool time, hiking, and workouts planned for the weekend. I also have to do some studying for school. So it’ll be a busy but fun weekend!
I went through a bit of a rut for like two weeks last month. My workouts felt harder than they normally would and I was just tired and blah. Instead of being hard on myself, I just kind of went with it and did what felt right, slept when I was tired, did workouts that matched my mood, spent time outdoors, and it just faded away! I am a big fan of Fitness Blender and the couple who run it are amazing and the workouts are free. You should check it out sometime if you’re looking to mix it up. (I am not affiliated with them in anyway, besides being a fan)
I love the hair ideas you’ve saved. I love three’s color, cut, and the texture of the hair. I think the color of #8 would also be pretty as well. I think a textured lob would be so pretty on you! You could totally rock some of those lighter colors, but a good colorist will have to gradually get you to something that far from you color or it will ruin your hair. Going that light will require more frequent regrowth touch ups as well, so could be more costly and require more time to maintain. Excited to see what you will do with your hair!
Have a nice weekend! 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi Katelyn!
Thank you & I have to agree about Mr. Grumples. Love that lil (big) guy so much.
I bet that is going to be so therapeutic and I hope you get some beautiful photos! Sounds like your weekend is filled with fun activities.
lol I love FBlender too! I blast my music while doing it in my living room.
Thanks for the input!!! xo xo

1. I’m going to the Made in America music festival in Philly! I live in Philly and have never been, and it’s in the middle of the city. I’m super exciting but hoping for no rain!!
2. I want to do more DIY too! I love DIY organization solutions that also make good decor..like a cute tray, or some kind of container or something.
3. Great question…I’m in a rut too lately, even though everything is going great in my life :/ I hate that feeling! I try to take a lot of time for self care. For example, last night I ditched my plans. I went to Target and did a little bit of retail therapy, then did some housework, ate a ‘comfort food’ meal without stressing about the nutrition, even skipped a workout (!!), and watched a funny tv show, then read a book by candlelight before bed. I usually beat myself up when I skip a workout, but I needed a lazy night like that and I feel a lot better today. Sometimes you just have to do what you feel like..instead of what you have to do.
4. I think the coloring of #5 with the length of #8 would look great on you! I would suggest chopping more, but I did that 2 years ago and almost instantly regretted it and have been growing it out since. That’s just me…the longer my hair is, the easier it is to style cause it’s straight.
Question! What do you season your ground turkey with? I was thinking of starting to prep a bunch at the beginning of the week. I’m in a meal prep rut.
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi Jaime!
Made in America as in DAVID MUIR MIA? 😉
DIY trays could be super cute! Rustic ones with gold!
Seems like everyone has been in a rut lately! but doing what YOU feel like works.
I just season it with garlic powder and a little low sodium soy sauce. 😀

I LOVED you as a blonde! Pretty either way; but if you are in a rut, you should go for it!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi Elle!
Thank you!:) I may slowly transition into full out blonde !
have a great weekend.
Desiree says
Those hairstyles all look great but I think the haircut in #2 is my favorite. A year ago I finally had the courage to chop off over a foot of my hair (I brought my hair stylist pictures of Julianne Hough from the movie Safe Haven). I absolutely love having short hair and I get so many compliments. Have fun 🙂 If you don’t end up liking it you can always change it or grow it out.
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi Desiree!
I love number 2 too! I’m going to slowly transition into that!
Julianne has been my hair inspo for years.

No more Jeep life? I’ve been contemplating getting a Jeep for a little bit now. How did you like it? I think No. 5 would look awesome for the fall weather coming up!
Taralynn McNitt says
Love jeep life!
I think that would be cute as well and could easily be transitioned into number 2!

1. My boyfriend and I are horrible at remembering holidays, so unfortunately we didn’t get to plan a get away for the long weekend. Hitting up the farmer’s market, working in the garden, and hiking with the dog is on the agenda!
2. I’m feeling the same. I’d like to see projects that incorporate creative ways to hang pictures throughout the house, and maybe DIY plant holders of some sort.
3. I just came across a quote this morning that said “Be patient with yourself. Nothing in nature blooms all year”, and it really hit home. I try to remind myself you can’t be on your game every single day. Having alone time helps me reassess my goals and determine if i’m getting there the right way.
4. I love number 2! Julianne Hough will forever be my hair inspiration.
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi Kate
I think hanging with the dogs and the farmers market sound like good plans to me!
I need to do more DIY with my photos! Maybe build some frames…
I love that quote. LOVE it. I kind of want to paint that onto a canvas…maybe the next DIY.

Hi Taralynn! I’m headed to Asheville next month and I was wondering if you had some recommendations for places to hike! I do quite a bit of hiking so I’m looking for some hikes that are moderate to difficult. Recommendations for anything else to do in Asheville would be appreciated too! 🙂
I’ve been in a rut too lately and I’m working on getting out by listening to fun, upbeat music and trying to plan physical activities that are fun to keep myself active like hiking and kayaking! I’ve found that exercise really helps lift my moods and ease my anxiety. The heat makes it tough to stay active so I’ve been hitting the gym lately, even though I’d much rather be outside!
As for the hairstyles, I like 3 and 5!
Taralynn McNitt says
LOVE ASHEVILLE.
Looking glass rock is great and they have the waterfall! Go see the biltmore if you have time and green sage cafe!!
Hiking is a great way to get out of a run or walking long trails! Perfect for anxiety.
Thank you! it’S SO HARD TO CHOOSE!
XO
have a fun weekend!

Going to the state fair! (second weekend in a row) and then Sunday cleaning, Monday who knows! Love days off 🙂
I know it wasn’t DIY, but I loved the bedroom decor post you did last fall. More of that? Or make your own decorations? I love before and after of furniture! Maybe a painting tutorial? Haha
That’s a hard question, because I’m not very good at it. I like to just be left alone, take a bath, read, do something that is the furthest thing from stressful!
I think #2 because it’s super short and I think it would be really cute and I’ve never seen a picture of you with short hair! I’m looking to get a trim soon and a Malibu to freshen up my hair!
Have a super fun weekend!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi Jennifer!!
LOVE the state fair. I miss the IOWA one 🙁
Those are all great DIY IDEAS!
I think alone time sometimes helps and then gym sessions with your best friend 🙂
I love that look too! so much change 🙂

I LOVE the #2 cut and color. You rocked the blonde hair some time ago!! But any of them will look nice on you 🙂

Andrea says
I like 6 or 7 for you. Even the blonde.
Taralynn McNitt says
Thank you!!
Kacee says
1. Going to the lake!!
2. DIY – go to a craft store or shop that carriers dried flowers and make a fall flower arrangement or make a chalkboard that you can write inspiration on for those days you just can’t seem to find your spark! 🙂
3. Read a biography of someone who inspires you or take a day off from working out and spend the day doing something you love.
4. I like #2 with an angle cut in back because it gives it volume.
A little saying that always sticks with me is, “this too, shall pass”. Hang in there, and have a nice weekend, Taralynn!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi Kacee!!
Those are great DIY ideas!!
Never thought about reading a bio, but that may be a great idea ?
I love it too!!
“this too shall pass” is something my mom and I have always said. It’s the truth!!
xo I hope you have a wonderful weekend and thank you for taking the time to comment ?

Soo many cool food ideas, definitely a good inspiration to come back to when I am out of ideas myself 🙂
What are you up to this weekend?
Today was my last waitressing shift for the year, so that weekend will be really long for me before college starts again. Tomorrow I’ll be shopping with my mom and she’ll get birthday presents for me. I’ll move to the UK soon and its my bday only after that, but we decided that I pick the presents so my family doesnt send me useless clutter that I have to carry back with me next year. On Sunday I’ll visit one of my best friends and in the evening travel on to the Netherlands to visit even more friends for a few days. I am so excited to see them all again!
I want to do more DIY. What DIY projects would you like to see?
I’d like to see some kind of upcycling project! There are so many things we throw away that we could still make use of with a few alterations.
How do you dig yourself out of a rut?
When in a rut I keep experimenting with different workouts and trying new things until something feels good to me again.
OK…I need your help. What hairstyle # should I go for? I’m in a huge hair rut and it’s at the “can’t do anything with it” stage.
I think if you light up your hair a bit and cut it to a collarbone length that would look amazing! I’m curious to see what you decide for!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi Vanessa!
Thanks so much.
You have a pretty busy weekend ahead of you! & congrats on your last shift! AND HAPPY EARLY BIRTHDAY! Have fun with your friends and all of the traveling. Sounds like a blast.
Upcycling is a great idea for DIY.
That is very true. NEW helps ruts.
Thanks for the hair idea! love it.

I love #3 and #5! I just got a hair cut and color after summer and feel so much more rejuvenated so maybe that’ll help with your rut also?! 🙂
This weekend I’m working and then going to a surprise birthday party and then hopefully hosting a small bonfire in our backyard. It’s cooled down here in St. Louis so I think it’ll be great weather!
I wish I could get into diy projects! I just not a very crafty person! But fall is coming up so maybe some kind of fire pit? I’m clearly ready for cooler weather! Lol!
I was in a rut a few weeks ago and small changes always help me like a change in hair style or even new bedding. I also got new shampoo (Wella) and candles for a new scent I’m the house! Ps I work in a mall and bath and body is having a pumpkin candle sale this weekend $15!!
Thanks for the post and I hope you have a great weekend! 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi Emily!
I love those too! It’s so hard to choose. Could help with the rut for sure! 😉
Bonfires! Helllllllloooo Fall! 😀 It’s actually chilly out right now because of the storm. I had goosebumps!
Lol I’m all about the Fall as well. I’m trying to hold off a couple more weeks.
Ruts are all about changing things up. WELL GREAT. Now I’ll be going to the mall this weekend!! I love when they do the 2 for $22!
I hope you have a great weekend as well. Don’t buy toooooo many candles 😉

I think you would look adorable with short hair like #2 with your natural wave it would work and looks like it wouldn’t take too much effort. 🙂

Hi Kate!
I couldn’t agree more with you! It’s such a leap, but could be fun! Plus hair grows back 😉

Sara says
2 or 6!! I loved you with blonde hair!
Taralynn McNitt says
Thanks Sara! I love those both. Such a leap!!
Jessica says
From what I have seen of your hair, if you opted for #6, it could very easily be styled into #2 and look classy yet fun anyway you wore it.
I am the queen of inexplicable ruts and if I get into multi-week duration my go-to finale is nothing but a day in bed with coffee, my dogs and favorite movies. Phone off, mind off, and in neutral.
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi Jessica!
That’s what I was thinking too, especially since I have naturally curly hair. I’m just scared about dying it blonde since my hair was FRIED last time.
That sounds like the perfect cure. I may do that tonight after the gym. It’s pouring here and the perfect excuse to cuddle up with my dog and watch a scary film!

Lauren says
1. I’m visiting my boyfriend this weekend!
2. DIY headbands would be really fun!
3. I’m still figuring out how to get out of ruts, especially while in college. They’re such a pain and they come at the most annoying times! I make sure I sleep 7-8 hours a night (no more or less because I’ll be exhausted and/or cranky), I go for bike rides, and I just try to be outside as much as possible. Nature has a funny way of healing you. I’ve started doing 5 minute meditations in the morning to set the mood for the day! It’s been surprisingly helpful.
4. I really love 5 & 6! You could totally rock them!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi Lauren!
That sounds great! You guys will have so much fun. I look so bad in headbands! I think my head is too big lol, but I think a DIY headband for running or working out might be cool. It’s so strange how nature can heal us. I agree fully! Meditations are great. I call coffee hour my meditation hour 😉 6 would be so fun!!

Thank you 🙂 I love #3 too, but maybe keep my length & add layers.. It’s so hard to choose!
Have a great weekend.

Hi,
I am going to be relaxing with my fiancée, cooking sloppy joes and pad Thai, window shopping at the mall, and building furniture that we had delivered. We are in our 20’s but we joke that we act like old people 😉 I’m not a huge DIY person myself but maybe something Halloween related? I vote for #8, still natural looking but brightened by the highlights.
Taralynn McNitt says
Hey There!
Sloppy Joes sound fantastic. I like to make them with ground turkey and grilled buns. Building furniture is always fun…….(sarcasm.) I think doing some Halloween related things sound great. I can’t believe it’s next month! I love #8 too and it can easily be transformed into one of the others later on.
Have a great weekend and good luck with that furniture!

Great post, love all the healthy inspirational meals! Thank you! 🙂
1) I live in Wisconsin so I’m heading up north with my fiance and parents to spend the long weekend at my cottage relaxing. Can’t believe summer is already done! Definitely excited for the cooler September air though…
2) I’m a huge, crazy plant lady so anything related to plants (pots, stands, etc) catches my eye. I’m also really into those funky yarn wall hangings that seem to be all over Pinterest. Will fall around the corner it might be fun to also do some fun DIY candles! I love those as well.
3) I get myself outside and away for a little bit to get myself out of a rut. I know you’re outside a lot with different activities, but doing something relaxing and not as physical outside is also great! Maybe a nice getaway to the mountains is needed soon for you! 😉
4) I also have long, wavy dark brown hair. I’ve been really into hair styles like #1, 3, 7, and especially 8 with the balayage highlights!
Taralynn McNitt says
Thank you so much!
A weekend at the cottage does sound super relaxing. Summer is still here (in the south) until october! It’s super hot here. I hope we get cooler weather soon. It’s actually a cold one today, but that is because of the tropical storm.
I love DIY candles & love doing diy wreaths! I may do a new one for Halloween.
I think you’re on to something with a mountain getaway 😉
I love the balayage highlights. Maybe I can do something like that and slowly transition into #2!
I hope you have a great weekend at the cottage!

Question for you – Where did you get the nude flats that you wore to church?
Thanks!

That’s such a daring move, but I love that look so much! I’m really thinking about doing it.

I am also in a rut right now. It sucks! I have never had such a hard time getting out of a rut before. I’ll read people’s tips in your comments here and hope something helps.
Also, break up with ketchup? No way! I have had a ketchup addiction for as long as I can remember. I sometimes eat certain foods specifically because I’m craving ketchup haha. I know it’s full of sugar, but it is just so delicious!

Hi B!
I love 3 too! I will just keep my length a bit longer.
Ruts are the worst. I’m blaming it on the dog days of summer.
I LOVE IT SO MUCH, food is just eh without it. You can give me the BEST STEAK AND HAVE IT FLAVORED & COOKED TO PERFECTION, BUT ILL STILL WANT MY KETCHUP! so yummy.

To cure a rut I try including some full fat organic greek yogurt everyday. Or take pro-biotics. Good gut bacteria improves your mood! It helps with that heavy tired feeling.
Also I try to get re-inspired. Look for what triggers inspiration for you, or what ever makes you feel nourished and alive, and surround yourself with it. (I actually find your blog is one of my little inspirations)
Do what makes you happy ?
If all else fails do meditation and yoga. It’ll zen you back in to peace and have you feeling like you’re back in the drivers seat in no time. ✌
Ps- I vote number 5.
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi Sonja!
I’ve actually read that! I know that probiotics are good for anxiety too.
Being re-inspired is definitely a must. I have been trying to get myself into some new things and push myself to try new stuff. Makes me happy to think that my blog can inspire someone 🙂 Thank you for that.
Thank you for taking the time to write me and share all of your amazing tips.

I am working tomorrow! But we are going to see Suicide Squad tonight and then going to a triple a baseball game tomorrow night. On Sunday we plan to grill with some friends and then free yoga on Sunday! (it’s usually free on labor day, so make sure to check it out!).
So I like the way 5 is styled the best. Soft curls but nothing too crazy and hopefully easy maintenance
To get myself out of a rut I have to surround myself with people that I love and love me and have similar goals/ideas as me. Usually that gets me inspired to get back to whatever goal I was working towards whether that be personal or professional.
Also – have you considered doing a triathlon? Your 2/3 of the way there, just need to get some swimming in 😉
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi Jessica!
Let me know how SS is!!
Triple baseball game!? You better bring the sunscreen, water and snacks! That’s going to be a long day, but I’m sure it’ll be fun.
Free yoga!? Love that.
Number five seems to been the fave!
That is always a good way to get out of a rut. Family and friends have a way of making us feel at ease.
I actually have been thinking about doing it, but I get nervous or chicken out of things like that. The swimming would be a struggle.

I’ve been in the worst rut for a month now. It’s just too hot and humid in Tokyo to even be outside for five minutes, let alone be active. I’ve been trying but it sucks. I cannot wait for cooler weather…
I actually ran over a snake on my bicycle the other day and I feel terrible about it! I just didn’t see him 🙁 He slithered away so I hope he lived…
I got annoyed with my long hair a few months ago and cut it short and I regret it so much. It’s in my face all the time now. I hope you don’t go too short!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi Evie!
I feel ya girl. I think this humidity and heat can only last like a month before I start going into “rut mode” I know it’ll be over with soon, so thats a positive!
I felt bad when I ran over a snake with my car. I saw it slither away in my mirror and I actually felt bad….although I’m glad I wasn’t walking. Snakes are pretty strong animals, so I’m sure he lived.
I won’t go too short because I need to be able to put my hair up in a pony tail for a run. I bet you look lovely with short hair!

If you have your hair cut like 1, you can easily style it like 3 or 5. (And the pics are confusing me, my overdue hair appointment is Thurdsay.)
The weekend: shopping trip, workout, Labor Day picnic.
Ruts: when I focus on trying to get through one, it puts too much emphasis on it, and I dwell, so I take a “this too shall pass” path, because it always happens that one day, the feeling of being in a rut is gone. Sometimes life is just a little routine and not terribly exciting, no matter how happy you are.
Except for cooking and jewelry making, I’m pretty beginner on DIY stuff, so any home decor type things are cool to me.
Have a great weekend!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi Dana!
I think number one would be super easy for me. I’d have to get just about six inches off and a deep condition! My hair is already that color. I can easily do these hair styles gradually. Starting with the cut…then the color…
Shopping is always fun! & so are Labor Day Picnics! Are you making anything special?
My mom always said “this too shall pass” and I always use that line and it really is the truth. Everything passes.
I’m thinking of doing some coffee related or pet related DIY things for the fall!
I hope you have a great weekend as well!

1. I work nights and weekends, so I won’t be doing anything too exciting! Honestly, I’m excited for an opportunity to chill out and grocery shop/meal prep for the week ahead. 🙂
2. Just throwing this out there… If you have any DIY ideas for ways to display a coffee mug collection, I’d love to hear it! I just moved into a studio, and all of my mugs are sad and lonely in a box. 🙁
3. The first step to digging myself out of a rut is pinpointing what’s causing it and I practice a LOT of self-love. I talk it out with people who matter, make sure to do things that make me happy, and try to avoid any high-stress situations outside of work. If I can figure out what’s causing the rut, I eliminate it if it’s possible. I was in a rut for so long (2 years) that it became my “normal,” until I finally realized that the person I called my best friend (who I lived with) was the one bringing me down. I ended that relationship and I’m slowly feeling normal again, and it’s the best feeling in the world.
4. I think you’d look super cute with hair #5!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi Melissa!
Sometimes chilling out is the best kind of weekend. I will be doing that too and watching the IOWA GAME of course.
OK…FUNNY YOU SHOULD MENTION THAT. I have SO MANY coffee mugs and I’ve been thinking about doing a DIY coffee rack. My dad is really good at building things like that, so I may have him help!
Process of elimination is the best. Sometimes it’s hard to get negative things out of your life, but it’s crucial. Glad you’re feeling back to normal again!
& thank you. I like that hair as well. I can be easily transitioned into #2!
I hope you have a great weekend & make lots of yummy food!
Taralynn
Melissa FitzGerald says
Ha! The funniest thing is, when I was writing the comment about the coffee rack I was thinking to myself, “Come on, NO ONE is going to need a coffee rack like you do because NO ONE HAS AS MANY COFFEE MUGS.” And then I thought about who I was talking to and realized if anyone has as many mugs as I do, it’s probably you!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hahaha you know me…I LOVE COFFEE & I LOVE MUGS. I don’t know if it’s just me or the coffee snob inside of me but I’m SO PICKY when it comes to which mugs I drink my coffee out of. I don’t like certain shapes or sizes. I like a medium sized standard shaped mug! I’m so weird lol
Melissa FitzGerald says
I am the SAME WAY! I really love getting a coffee mug when I go somewhere new, as opposed to a souvenir shirt or something, and I cannot tell you how many times my friends will find ones that they think are so cute and I’m just like guys…it’s too tall…or it’s too big…hahah! (Something tells me if the 2 of us ever wound up shopping for coffee mugs together we’d NEVER be done)
Taralynn McNitt says
Hahaha glad you get it! A mug has to fit my criteria before I buy it. I also LOVE buying souvenir mugs. I brought a couple back from Savannah!

I definitely relate to this desire to keep changing hair styles –just got a hair cut and treatment yesterday because I also felt like it was at that stage where I couldn’t do anything to it. I love your hair cause it’s naturally wavy (mine is super straight and I would kill for some natural waves), so I think those messy long bobs in pictures 2 and 5 would look great! And I love the colors in 3 and 8. Can’t wait to see pictures!
Taralynn McNitt says
I can’t wait to go get mine done for that same feeling. I get in the mood to change hair/styles when seasons change or when I’m ready for SOMETHING to change.
Those are great suggestions.

Hi Tara!
1 – I’m moving back to school this weekend for my senior year at college! (Wish me luck, I’m nervous for the tough classes coming up, PLUS two internships!)
2 – Whenever I get an urge to DIY and don’t know what to do, I start knitting something haha! You seem to like the furniture DIY’s though…maybe some sort of an ottoman for the bedroom?
3 – I’m in a rut as well! Had a crazy day yesterday where everything and everyone was running super super late! I’m blaming the anxiety that comes with the impending school year haha. I think sometimes you just have to keep pushing through it and wait for it to pass 😛
4 – Very cute styles! I asked my hairstylist about a cut like #5 recently and she said that the only problem with it is it takes a whole lot of effort to look perfectly curled like that – you’d have to invest in a nice curling iron and do it almost every day. But you and I have similar hair I think! Mine is super wavy/curly and thick so I always get it cut in layers which helps negate the “triangle look” if you know what I mean haha 😉 I like #1 and #2 for you, but maybe play with a middle part like #7? I like that shorter, shoulder length hair on you though I think it’s lovely 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi Colleen!!
Don’t be nervous! YOU GOT THIS 🙂 Congrats on the internships and I’m sure you’ll blow them out of the water. You are doing so well & you should be so proud of yourself.
I was thinking of refurbishing something for my intertwinement center or some other kind of furniture piece from craigslist.
I’m sure you’re so busy and the change is causing a little bit of that anxiety. THIS TOO SHALL PASS 😉
I think if I did five my naturally wavy hair may be able to do it with a couple little chunky curls added! I may start with #1 though.

This weekend I don’t have too much going on, and I’m kind of okay with that. I’m just hanging out at home, playing with my dog and my two kitties. I love pallet DIY projects, and furniture DIY projects. I make a lot of different pallet signs myself. As for the rut, I don’t know, I usually just take time by myself to sort of pull myself out of it. I love the styles in #’s 5&6 but love the colors in #’s 2&6. I’m partial to blonde though, because my natural hair color is a light to medium brown and I just went in yesterday to have my roots touched back up to blonde. Plus, I loved when your hair was blonde. I’m also a huge fan of drastic hair changes. I think if you go to the right person the blonde can be done without damaging your hair, I was surprised how soft and healthy my hair was to make it blonde without bleach. I’m sure whatever you choose will look great!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi Hillary!
I don’t have anything going on this weekend (other than watching the Hawkeyes play) & I’m also ok with that. I also plan on playing with Mr. Grumples and fitting in tons of walks because it’s going to be so nice this weekend.
I love pallet DIY projects too and I was thinking it could be cool to make a coffee mug rack with it.
I also LOVED when m hair was blonde, but it was so much work and I’m scared to get myself into that again. I’m going to eventually though:)
I agree that i need to look for a look for a good stylist!

Hillary Danielle says
Yes! A coffee mug rack would be SUPER cute! Once we get our kitchen remodel started AND completed, I want to add a little “coffee station,” to put everything in one place and maybe make a mug rack as well! If you make it, please share photos!
Yes, blonde is a lot of work, but I flip flop with my hair all the time. One day I want it blonde, the next I want it brown, then I want it long, then short. But I settled on blonde, simply because it’ll be easier to go dark brown from blonde, than it would be to go blonde from dark brown. Can’t wait to see what you choose to do!

I saw you running at the riverwalk with your boyfriend this morning. You guys were giggling and I thought y’all were the cutest. I hope this doesn’t come off as creepy and I would have stopped to say hi, but you were running too fast for this gal. My husband and I just moved to the Fort Mill area a few months ago and I wanted to thank you for introducing us to the riverwalk and all the surrounding areas. I hope you do a meet up one day.

I am lucky enough to be spending my weekend (and week) with my best friend in Norway (her home)! They don’t celebrate labor day here but she is off of work with her new baby! Love exploring somewhere new with a local!
I love DIY projects! Its funny that as I read through the comments others totally had the same idea as me with a coffee mug holder type project! Guess that is what happens when you love coffee! I’d also love any kind of fall DIY ideas… pumpkin anything! Decor? gifts? any brilliant ideas really!
Ruts are SO hard. I always find my self falling in them when I am stagnant for too long. To break out of them I try to focus on the good in each day, do things I enjoy (hiking, coffee, hanging out with the dog), and sometimes just trying something new and different (new recipe, restaurant, walking patch… Anything to break the rut!)
I love your hairstyle choices. I think number 5 & 1 are my favorites. Although they are different than each other, if you get the like 5 then you could probably style it to look similar to 1 (or a couple of the others!). I actually got my hair cut in January and #5 was literally the pictures I brought in with me. I loved it but missed my long hair after too long.
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi Carly!
Thanks so much 🙂
A week in Norway sounds lovely. Doing it with a local is even better!
Love that you guys love coffee just as much as I do and I’m super excited to get started on this coffee rack!
You’re right. This weekend has been a huge help with breaking that rut. I’ve been doing long walks and coffee with friends + long walks with grumples. WE hit a milestone today. Grumples used to lung and freak out around people…but last night we successfully walked him two miles uptown with TONS of people and he was the best behaved dog on the planet. I was so happy I could cry!
I REALLY like #1! 😀 I think I need some layers right now or either 1!
I hope you have a lovely week in Norway and I can’t wait to hear all about it.

Hi Taralynn!!
I actually have a random question for you. We just got a Goldendoodle puppy (isn’t that what Grumples is??), and he keeps throwing up after every meal he eats. He just got back from the vet with a clean bill of health…. any ideas? Did Grumples do this as a puppy? I actually think he may be just too young for solid food. He is only 5 weeks old and seems to be doing better on soft food, but ???
Go get a massage!!!! That always helps me get out of a rut :o) Haircut will help, too. They’d all look super cute.
Love you blog!!!! Been reading forever. xoxo
Jenn
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi Jenn!!
YES! Grumples is a goldendoodle.
I’m so sorry you’re going through this. That sounds so scary 🙁 I’m surprised your vet didn’t tell you what was wrong with your puppy. Question…Is your puppy eating grass? Dogs eat grass when their tummy’s hurt and it makes them throw up. Maybe he’s eating too fast? I’d definitely get a second opinion from another vet if he continues to keep throwing up. That is definitely not normal. Grumples never threw up unless he ate something he shouldn’t have. Did the vet recommend any food? I’m so surprised they didn’t give you any suggestions. He should be able to eat puppy/solid food by now. I hope you get answers, but definitely don’t wait too long! Good luck & please keep me updated!
Haircut & massage sound like a great idea.

This weekend I was up in the mountains (Big Bear CA) for my brother in-laws wedding! It was a blast and I was ecstatic that the Starbucks in town already had there pumpkin spice stuff out and ready to go because it was chilly!
DIY Ideas..hmmm.. I am thinking about doing like a little coffee bar in our place, like maybe getting an old dresser and converting it into a coffee and maybe wine bar. That way my kitchen counter is less crowded, or perhaps a small outdoor garden to grow hers maybe using pallets to hang them up?
RUT..girl don’t even get me started. I feel like grumples the heat has been killing me and I have no energy to go outside, I am hoping for a chilly fall and winter so that I can run outside again, the treadmill is just so BORING!
Also I love styles #1 and #3, I actually have been considering one like #1 for myself, but I worry that it may make my face look fat.. ugh hair is always a pain!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi Ashton!
Wedding in the mountains? that sounds like so much fun.

Taylor says
Hi Taralynn! I first wanted to say I love the layout of your blog. I like how simple it is with the white and pops of color! You inspired me to start my own blog a few months ago but I had a hard time keeping up with it and working a full time job. I hope to be able to get back into it at some point. It’s hard to keep writing especially when I don’t know if anyone is even reading it. This weekend I am going home to visit my family (currently live 2 hours away from them). My sister and I make jewelry and also have a craft show going on which should be fun! I am obsessed with doing DIY projects and i’m sure you know Pinterest has a million ideas! I love chalk painting old furniture that I have and replacing the knobs to make them look like new. I LOVE hair style #2. My hair was super long and last summer I chopped it all off. I liked it for awhile but then just wanted my long hair back. I love your hair long but sometimes you just need to change it up! Like many others who commented, I also loved your hair blonde. I’ve been dying my hair blonde for almost 8 years and it isn’t fried at all.. you just have to make sure you go to the right person! You could always start out doing bayalage so your roots don’t come in too harsh. Usually when I go I also just have them do a “partial highlight” where she only highlights the top half of my head because you don’t see the bottom unless I wear my hair up. It’s also a lot cheaper to do a partial highlight, so I switch back and forth each time I go. I also have them put in light brown low lights so it stays a dirty blonde color. Hope this info helps if you are looking to transition back. If not, I do love #8 with that bayalage caramel color! You’ll look amazing either way!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi Taylor!
Thank you so much:)
When you start a blog, you have to do it for yourself. That is what keeps you going without the worry of who is reading it. Keep writing, build up that content and eventually someone is going to find that blog, and if they don’t…who cares. It’s for you! 🙂 Sounds like you’re super at DIY projects. I’d LOVE TO READ SOME OF YOUR BLOGS:) *hint *hint
I am afraid of chopping it off too, so I am going to do slowly and gradually! The blond may be hard and kill my hair, so balayge sounds like something I need to do.
xo xo & thank you so much for all your input. I appreciate it so much

Thanks so much for the advice. You are totally correct that the blog should just be for me, especially in the beginning. I know my mom and close friends always read it and gave great feedback. I’d love to share it with you once I get some more content on it! Can’t wait to see your new hair!!! <3

Taylor, Taralynn inspired me to start blogging as well! I totally agree on having a hard time keeping up though. I work full time and Im in school full time. Just do your best and enjoy it! It is so much fun 🙂 I would love to read yours! &I think you should do #3 for your hair 🙂

I love #5 for your hair! You look great with any hair style, but I haven’t seen you with blonde in a while. For DIY, I have always liked it when you fix up furniture. It always inspires me! Squeeze Mr. Grumples for me, I love his adventures <3
