Yesterday, after putting some of the things away and getting the apartment together, I went grocery shopping with Lily. We stopped at BJ’s. It’s like a Costco or Sam’s Club. I bought a lot of the foods we eat in bulk yesterday because we go through them so fast. Jeremy and I are both garbage disposals.
I hadn’t had anything since breakfast because we were busy getting this put together, so before putting away the groceries, I snacked on some apples and peanut butter.
And then, I put away the groceries!
I bought a 3 lb bag of Whole Almonds and a bag of Planter’s Mixed nuts. I also bought watermelon, cantaloupe, and a pineapple.
I bought some half and half for my coffee and brought my Keurig!
BJ’s had a box of 24 yogurts for $4.99 so I threw those in the cart.
I bought some Pink Lady Organic apples and red grapes!
I bought a couple containers of fresh eggs. I love scrambled, hardboiled, and omelets!
One of my favorite snacks is vegetables and hummus. I bought a huge container of hummus at Bj’s. I like roasted garlic, roasted red pepper, and tomato basil.
I also like Cedar’s Edamame Salad to throw on top of salads.
I bought 50/50 spinach spring lettuce! I also bought iceberg for Jeremy.
And I can’t live without my nut butters! I bought Organic Creamy Peanut Butter and Barney Butter Smooth Almond Butter I like nut butters with my toast, celery, apples, rice cakes, and on a spoon out of the jar!
Gourmet Dried Apricots are delicious for desserts and snacks. They’re sweet and satisfying!
Jeremy always skips breakfast and I get on him about it. I’m a huge breakfast person! I bought him a huge pack of special K breakfast sandwiches for him to heat up at work or eat on his way to the office.
I love love love broccoli and I haven’t eaten enough of it lately. I bought a huge bag of it for the freezer to go with my salmon.
Sometimes dinner or lunch for one is easier out of a box, so I found these delicious salmon fillet’s at BJ’s. I was impressed with it’s low sodium content. Usually salmon has 500+ mg of sodium.
I stocked the fridge with carrots, strawberries, zucchini lunchmeat, and avocados!
I bought a huge box of Kellogg’s Special K Baked Cracker Chips (90 Calorie Packs). I’m obsessed with them! I also bought raspberries and blueberries.
Jeremy’s hospital is out in the boondocks, so I packed him a lunch so he wouldn’t have to drive back or out of his way to pick anything up. Just two turkey sandwiches on 100% Whole Grain Bread, cracker chips, and 100 Calorie Packs Oreo Thin Crisps

Tara,
I’ve noticed that, lately, in some of your food posts you are purchasing products and making meals I haven’t ever seen before. For instance, those special K crackers and breakfast sandwiches were things I thought you wouldn’t buy. (I’m not sure why I thought that,I guess I always thought all pre-packaged meals were major no-no’s). The meals and grocery lists you have been showing recently seem a lot more realistic and accessible for a college student on-the-go, like me. It feels like a lot of these are things that I can make in a pinch, and will still be healthy. Thank you! This is very encouraging. 🙂

This is awesome! What is your favorite food for staying full for long periods of time without eating a full meal? thanks! 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
I’m not sure if I know what you mean…but foods that keep me full when I’m out and about and too busy to eat?…I like to have mixed nuts, nut butters, fresh fruit, and high calorie, good for you, healthy foods.

Whats the best peanut butter to by at Walmart or Aldi’s?
Taralynn McNitt says
Sometimes I buy the all natural Jif or anything organic or all natural is your best option 🙂
Leigha @ Minougirl says
I like the Skippy natural no stir! Both the crunchy and creamy 🙂

I have a few questions about your beautiful dog… I am thinking about getting a goldendoodle and was wondering where you got him? What exact mix is he? Does he shed at all and any other information you think might be helpful when choosing a breeder??? Thanks so much, he is truly such a cute and lovable looking dog! : )

Hi Tara! I, too, love my Keurig. What are your favorite K-Cups to pick up? I’m always trying new ones to find my favorites! 🙂

WOW you guys eat really healthy!! Is there anything that you splurge on, that you absolutely must have? I try to eat healthy but I’m literally addicted to chocolate.

Thanks for such a detailed post! I was so curious what was all in your cart!

Tara,
I love to buy fresh stuff but sometimes I feel like I buy too much and end up wasting a lot of it since it goes bad so quickly. What do you do to make sure you get the most out of your fresh produce??
Thanks,
Anna
Anna says
I try to buy fresh produce that can be cooked and/or frozen! That way if you feel like your produce is on its last leg you can cook the veggies, which tends to hide if something isn’t super fresh. Also, you can always cook or blanch the veggies and freeze them to use at a later date. A lot of fruits freeze well, too, if you cut them up and put them in freezer bags. I try to label and date what I put in the freezer so I know what needs to be used first. Also, a fun trick my mom taught me for oranges- if they are too mushy to eat, cut them up and boil them on the stove with a bit of water and some cinnamon. It makes the house smell wonderful. 🙂

Hi!
I am pretty good about eating healthy and I am slowly but surely learning to cook but it is just me in the house. I always buy too much food and then it goes to waste. Don’t have much freezer space. Any tips on how to buy healthy for just one person without running to the store everyday!?
Madita @ HHandCoffee says
I really like to see what you bought, it’s so cool that you share things like this with us 🙂
Em says
Hey Anna May! Quick piece of advice. You can freeze fresh food! If things start to get close, throw them in a freezer safe bag or container and use them when the time is right! 🙂

I am very surprised at how much packaged food you buy. I’ve seen a huge change in your blog recently where you do more posts about your life and post less recipes about promoting healthy eating. Its more a food diary. Almost everything you bought came in a package. Why don’t you make your own hummus instead of telling us that you bought this brand at the store. I’ve been following your blog for a very long time and it has changed a lot during that time. I read your blog for recipes with FRESH food. You eat a lot of refined and processed foods since you started eating meat again. Maybe you should think more about the people that come to read your blog every day and why people read it.

“Almost all packaged” – really? Almost all of what she bought: fresh/raw eggs, cantaloupe, pineapple, watermelon, blueberries, raspberries, carrots, grapes, apples, zucchini, almonds, strawberries, spinach…plus frozen broccoli, frozen salmon, and dried apricots! LOL. Sorry Taralynn – I guess writing a lifestyle blog means you are expected to grow and harvest your own produce so it never goes into a plastic box before you eat it. Don’t even try the farmer’s market – they might dump your produce into a plastic bag, like those “packaged” apples you bought! And don’t even think about that hummus or peanut butter…you will be expected to grow your own chick peas and peanuts so you can make those yourself, too. You might even have to take up salt mining so you can have a little salt to roast the peanuts with. Seriously people…

Thanks for posting this! I like seeing all of the healthy options you buy when you go grocery shopping. Helps me to stay motivated!

We choose to read her blog. If anyone doesn’t like what they are seeing they can simply stop following it. I like seeing the packaged products as well as fresh, because sometimes its just not feasible to make a full meal while at work or school.

I started Fitness Pal about a month ago. I’m not sure if you’ve heard of it but it’s a count your daily allotted calorie intake. I don’t mind counting calories right now because it helps me see and understand what’s going in and what to look for. Because of the calorie thing I have to be careful and a lot of your bulk shopping are things I can eat in moderation but it’s not just calories I have to look at. Can you tell me what I should be snacking on? Peanut butter is out as is eggs. High calories is not worth it when I only have 1400 cals a day.

So, I have been following your Blog for so long now, and I am so impressed with every bit of your story! It’s really inspiring and So touching at times reading through your past struggles. I can honestly say i’ve never experienced things quite like you had to with girls and things, But, I have always been insecure about my body, and never severely over weight, but enough to be insecure ( 25 pounds or so on a 5’5 frame is Enough… ) I have started SO MANY diets, Atkins, Weight Watchers, etc. Only to fall off the wagon because I don’t know if I lack motivation, or, just am a food addict because I think it’s a combo of both! lol!! But, I know that I want it, and keep on trying even though i fail! I just wondered if you had any tips as far as, Starting out. I get so lost when I’m not on a guidelines diet because I’ve been through ” no breads.. no sugar.. no fats.. etc.” so when I start trying to just eat healthy, I get so lost and just give up… I tried reading up on the internet, but everything contradicts everything else.. you know what I mean.. so, where is a good place to start.. basics to follow.. did you follow calories? fat? carbs? ( referring to when you first started because clearly you were successful) or did you follow a specific plan? feel free to email me.. Any advice would be amazing! at 26, I’m so sick of YoYo diets and being insecure like i have been forever.. I don’t have a ton to lose and I just want to do it already! If you actually read all that, Bless Your Heart! lol!!

Hi Faith. You might want to try Amanda Adams bikini body program. She teaches you the basics of nutrition and shows you how to build your own meal plan.
This IS NOT no carb, no sugar diet. In fact she encourages you to eat everything in moderation. She also knows that life will be life and there will be times we go to weddings or with summer coming up – BBQ’S. She factors that in via flex calories.
This isn’t a diet but a new lifestyle and it helps to get the basics on nutrition from her. It REALLY has changed my life. I am doing it now. I am on my 3rd week and I am already learning how to be creative in the kitchen.

Hi Taralynn!
So, I was wondering if you had any snack alternatives for people with peanut/nut allergies (like me!)? I’ve read time and time again that nuts are some of the healthiest things to eat for healthy fats and protein, but unfortunately I will never be able to jump on that bandwagon! I can’t even eat a snickers! (not that I should lol)But, do you have any suggestions for other means to get those nutrients? Thanks!

I just love your blog and grocery lists and recipes I have a horrible time trying to find easy foods to cook and to eat that fit with my busy busy lifestyle and I love to see that you do eat some foods that I actually know about and aren’t making every single recipe by scratch its nice to see that I can have a tortilla still just in moderation and things like that so I really feel your blog is going to help me with my new healthy lifestyle I’ve been taking notes and printing out recipes of yours for awhile now and I just love your blog. I read your story today and seriously teared up i was skinny in high school then get bigger as i started out on my own and was fortunate to not be bullied but I bully myself and I tell myself I’ll start tomorrow and then the next day do the same thing so I’m very excited to try your tips and your recipes:)

Hi Taralynn,
I have come across your blog many times via pinterest over the last few years. I have always been curious as to how tall you are and how much you weighed in the green dress before picture. If that’s something you don’t share, I get it. Anyways, I have lost over 30 pounds two different times in my life. Once in high school, and once a few years back. Both times I managed to gain it all back and more. What is your biggest tip for staying motivated. I always seem to go on a wild binge about 15 or 20 pounds before I reach my goal and lose control. Did you ever have this problem???
