I’m sure some of you have read this article. If you haven’t…be prepared to get fired up!
Magazine Makes Fun of Cancer Survivor’s Tutu
This is why you should never judge a book by it’s cover. Always get to know a person before you make any comments about them. This is a magazine that strives to make woman feel happy and confident about themselves. I’m happy to know that bashing them is their approach. Now, I can cancel my subscription and stick to reading inspiration from real people, not gossip magazines that are written by mean girls in hopes to make money.
I used to look at magazines all the time when I was on my weight loss journey. I used to strive to be like the photoshopped stick thin girls. I didn’t care about running a race, how the insides of my body would react from artificial sweeteners, or how strong I could be. Magazines played a huge role in my hopes to be “thin”. That is why I ditched them and started reading real blogs written by real woman. I like to read about real struggles and journeys that haven’t been fabricated or stretched out by editors.
It’s unfortunate that the magazine couldn’t have dug into the woman’s lives and researched the meaning behind these tutu’s. They should be looking to inspire, not bash the inspiring. These woman are a symbol of strength and hope for so many. It’s so unfortunate they weren’t highlighted that way. Maybe SELF can use this as a lesson and reconstruct their magazine into a inspiration about real woman and fighters. I’d reconsider my subscription if that were to happen. And what the heck is BS METER? Sounds like another version of a “burn book”…also written by Mean Girls.
Woman are quick to bring other woman down and I don’t understand it. No one is the same, and if we could just accept each others differences, we’d be so happy with our own lives. If you feel the need to bash someone, bash your damn self! Or at least keep the bashes in your head. I’m sure the magazine has heard one of the most famous quotes ever…”
“if you ain’t got nothing nice to say don’t say nothing at all!”
I’ll be running my first half soon and I hope to support the Glam Runner’s by wearing one of their tutu’s. And if SELF MAGAZINE, has an issue with it…they can kiss my ass at the finish line.

What do you think about Self’s article?

Taralynn!! Thank you sooo much for posting this! I saw on yahoo this story and got angry instantly!! If I had a SELF subscription I would cancel immediately!!!

Totally agree with you on this! Why people judge so much about people is what really irritates me. Before SELF says something, they should have looked into their lives a little bit before making BS assumptions

People can be so cruel 🙁 More power to her and her tutu!

I saw this yesterday, and I was so mad too! I wasn’t very pleased with the “apology” that was written. The editor basically said, “I had no idea you had brain cancer! If I would have, I would have never written those things.” And I’m just thinking…So if she didn’t have brain cancer it would have been okay for you to bash her in your magazine when she has a business that seeks to empower women?? And, they didn’t even get their story straight, they called to ask if they could use her picture, but they didn’t say what for and didn’t ask for any info about the picture. It says in the article that it was “hitting NYC” when in fact, the picture is from a race they ran in Los Angeles. If anyone is “lame” it’s the magazine for posting inaccurate/hateful garbage. I’m glad they were called out on the carpet. They should be embarrassed.

Good for you for posting this! Completely agreed! We should be building each other up and promoting self-love!

This is truly horrifying. I hope SELF loses a lot of subscriptions because of this. Thank you for highlighting what they did, Taralynn.
And the article says “people think tutus make them run faster.” No one thinks that. I have a feeling SELF knew there was a special reason these women wore the tutus but decided that shouldn’t get in the way of their bashing, so they (SELF) made up the excuse that the runners thought it made them run faster. I think Self just dislikes the “girly” image and will bash anything to further their agenda, including cancer survivors. Horrible.

Couldn’t agree more! I stopped reading magazines when I discovered blogs and these blogs changed my life. When I see the magazine headlines in the checkout line at the store, I just snicker at them, they’re so ridiculous and it’s always the same stuff!

I am so tired of every magazine cover telling me to love myself and then telling me every way possible to lose 10 pounds, shape up my flabby ass, fix my hair, but tons of products so that I can be beautiful. Self and women’s health, two magazines that should be promotioning women and thier self esteem and self love are some of the worst offenders! So happy that you pointed this out!! We should be supporting each other and encouraging each other as a sisterhood. Helping each other to be our best selves from the inside, not bashing each other! You are a true inspiration Taralynn, I’ve been reading your blog for a very long time and I love your positive, down to earth attitude and, well, really your whole blog. And grumples of course 🙂

I wanted to thank you for bringing attention to this nasty publication. I could not believe that someone’s struggle and amazing presence would be cast in that light, or should I say, dark. They are running a race, which is amazing in itself, let alone being cancer survivors. I am fundraising and participating in the world’s longest bike ride to raise awareness for cancer and would like to stand up against this BS. Your blog is amazing, and I am so glad you are choosing to focus on health and ability rather than body image.

I get this magazine subscription, but have not been getting them in the mail lately. But am glad that you blogged about this because this is just horrible. It seems as though they are trying to compete with the tabloid magazines to stay in the running to keep selling magazines which is sad and it also seems that more people are being so rude towards each other and since this was a cancer survivor thats just even more ridiculous!
