I’ve been blogging my weekends and not-so-much my weekdays to help keep these recaps shorter. Lately, my weekdays have been consumed behind a desk, and haven’t been very blog-worthy. When it gets warmer out, I’ll have a lot more to share. You’ll find me out on the neighborhood trails, gardening, and hopefully spending less time behind the desk (unless I’m blogging!)
If you are here reading today, come and say “hi” in the comments. I’d love to meet the silent readers, and connect with those stopping by! It always makes my Monday’s a whole lot better when I see your comments and get the opportunity to meet you. I mentioned this briefly on twitter the other day, but it feels like so many people have stopped commenting on blogs and have moved towards reaching out via Instagram or direct messages. Even though that’s great, and I love seeing you there, blogging becomes a little less fun when most of my time is spent connecting on Instagram. It’s a great platform, but I put more of my heart over here. I get about 30+ DM’s a day on Instagram and don’t get to read all of them. Comments on my blog? I see every single one of them and will always reply back. I fear that the art of blogging is going to be taken over by other platforms, and the content you once read will mold into evergreen content that is better for Google searches. I truly love this space, but the art of blogging is slowly fading in the shadow of social media platforms, and I just wanted to put this message out there.
now on to the recap 😊
I know I said I wasn’t going to blog much on the weekdays, but this last-minute french toast decision was picture-worthy.
I used the Canyon Bakehouse gluten-free bread with egg, sprinkled cinnamon and syrup on top, and then cooked the blueberries and bananas with a little maple syrup and vegan butter to give them a crispy finish. 😋
After working on Monday, I spent my evening eating leftovers and watching the Bachelor. I hate this season, but can’t look away.
I haven’t had the chance to share this recipe yet, but it’s all Kyle and I have been eating. I usually cook half of the batch and roll the other half up into balls to freeze for cookie dough treats. I promised myself this would be the last time I make them because we cannot stop eating them. They’re delicious, especially in the afternoon with coffee.
Fast forward to Valentine’s Day! 😊 How awesome that it fell on a Friday this year?
After finishing up work early, I had my avocado toast and chicken maple sausage from Applegate with breakfast. And yes, I do eat the kiwi skin. It’s the best and healthiest part of the fruit. I had this exact breakfast Tue through Sun, and now I need to go to the store to pick up the same ingredients! I’m waiting for the day to come where I get sick of Trader Joe’s Everything But The Bagel Seasoning, but it’ hasn’t arrived yet. It honestly makes anything taste amazing.
I spent Valentine’s day out at my parent’s house. Even though it was super cold out, the sun was shining, and I thought it would be great to let the dogs run around in the backyard. My mom made the cutest valentine’s day gingersnap hearts, and we watched a movie together. If you haven’t seen Instant Family yet, you need to. It’s one of my favorite movies, and it’ll have you crying and laughing off and on for two hours.
When I got home, a gorgeous bouquet from Kyle was on the porch. The pink roses had me excited for spring, and I couldn’t stop staring at the perfect blooms.
I gave him his Valentine’s Daybook, the one I make for him every single year! He loves it, and it’s so neat to have these memories from our year put together in a book. They take a while to make, but it’s so worth it. The quality is incredible, and Mixbook always has excellent discount codes. A lot of you asked for me to do a blog post on how I put the books together, and I definitely will do that soon!
Kyle and I headed to Crate and Barrel to pick out a few things for the house followed by Reids in Southpark for one of our favorite meals, chicken caesar salad with truffle fries and brussels sprouts! We come here a lot because the food is so darn good, there’s always seating, and we like picking up a gluten-free cake on the way out. We ended up watching a movie on the couch and cuddling up with the pups.
On Saturday morning, I couldn’t stop staring at the gold lamps on the table. They have been so out of place, especially since I’m changing the color of the gold mirror above the couch. I thought about buying new ones but then decided to paint them black and see if that would help. Well, this fifteen-minute makeover turned out pretty good! I didn’t have to buy new lamps, and the paint from my table project did the trick! They look much better since we currently have black kitchen cabinets.
On a side note: I had a lot of people asking why Kyle and I are looking for a new couch when we just purchased this sectional a year and a half ago. We are not going to get rid of this couch; it’s just going to be going upstairs in our loft. Our downstairs is set up completely different than our living room now, and this couch will not work in the room. We have to get two 7 ft couches to fill the space, so that’s why we’ve been on the hunt. 😊
Lunch on Saturday was a turkey sandwich and a La Croix! Yes, Grumples got a bite. 😉
We headed over to the house to look at the backyard with my dad. He’s going to be helping us with some leveling and landscaping, so we needed his opinion on a few things. I brought over our new floors so I could see what it would look like in the lighting, and it’s safe to say that I’m obsessed!
When we got there, we were so excited to see that our cabinets had arrived!
Sometimes cabinets get delayed, and it was awesome to see ours had been shipped early. They will be getting installed today, and we’ll have our exact closing date by the end of this week!
Keep up to date on the home build and get the latest news first here —> @cottagestory
I hope you’re ready for some cooking tutorials in this kitchen! The lighting in here has been a dream for me. The kitchen we have now is super dark, so I never want to shoot photography in there. This is going to make my job so much easier 😊 I won’t have to carry all of my ingredients over to the window.
Here is what our floors look like in the model house. We went with the Durham white cabinets, white backsplash, and white quartz. It’ll be pretty blinding, but with the black hardware, black doors, and other decor pieces, I have a feeling it’ll look pretty good!
We decided to grab dinner with my parents at Napa in Kingsley. There’s a new spot in Fort Mill, SC (right outside of Charlotte) that has grown so fast, and it’s awesome to see all the businesses added to the city. When I first moved to Charlotte, Fort Mill was almost all woods, but that’s not the case anymore. It still has a warm small-town feel, though. My dad and Kyle split a sausage and pepper flatbread pizza while my mom and I enjoyed a glass of malbec.
I ordered the pan-seared salmon with roasted carrots, broccoli, a parsnip puree, and fingerling potatoes. I knew it was going to be dangerous living only six minutes from this spot because HOLY MOLY was this meal delicious. I look forward to coming here in the summer and having lunch outside by the water.
We headed to my parent’s house on Saturday night to have popcorn and play Fibbage. These are the perfect activities for cold February nights.
On Saturday morning, I don’t know what got into me, but I decided to make a vanilla gluten-free cake (came from a box) with vanilla vegan frosting! I added some roses to the top, some edible pearls, and put it on a cute floral antique plate I bought at a thrift store a few years ago. I saw a rose garden cake on Instagram, and I think it definitely inspired my Saturday morning cake baking.
On Saturday afternoon, I picked up an almond milk cappuccino and headed to Dolce Lusso to get my hair done. I’m so happy they opened a location in my new town! I won’t have to drive 30-minutes to get there anymore. I had two inches cut off, and a few layers added. I want to get the red tint out of my hair, but I’m trying my hardest not to die it for a while. The blonde from last summer is coming thought, making it red, but I’m going to try to embrace it for a while.
And if you thought baking a garden cake was out of character, I ended up pulling out the paints and started painting our new house. I want to paint the house and surround it with all kinds of flowers. I’m going to put it in the downstairs guest room in the new house. Cross your fingers it turns out! I have about nine more layers of details to do. 😆 Cheers to trying new things, I guess!
Questions for you!
- Did you do anything special for Valentine’s Day?
- How do you spend your cold winter nights on the weekend?
- Have you tried anything lately that was entirely out of your character?
Thank you for stopping by today! xo xo

This is one of the first Valentine’s Days in 5 years that Mark and I actually did something.. and what we did was totally cheesy.. we went to Olive Garden! The more unique places we wanted to try didn’t take reservations from what we saw.
They’re usually spent with a movie on the couch since it’s usually too cold to leave the house! Lol
Not that I can recall 🤔 I’ve been so busy that doing things out of character are things I used to do all the time (like baking!).
Taralynn McNitt says
Girl…OLIVE GARDEN is the best! What a great spot for Valentine’s Day!!
Crazy how life has a way of doing that. I thought about that on Sunday and was like “I can’t remember the last time I painted something” so I decided to ditch the phone, the blog, and paint!
Emily says
My boyfriend and I went to Olive Garden for Valentine’s Day too! 😊 Winter is pretty boring but we usually spend our nights watching Netflix. 😋 In the summer though we like to hike and explore new places.
Your painting looks awesome by the way! And I hope you never stop blogging! I’ve been following you since your undressed skeleton days and I feel like my week isn’t complete without your recap blog haha!
Taralynn McNitt says
I can’t agree more!! The winter always seems to be boring (unless there’s a show to binge!) and we always explore more in the summer!
I hope to never stop blogging either, so I appreciate you stopping by to say “HI!” 😊 Means a lot to me!!
Marie says
Hi, I usually dont comment cause Im french and my english is… Not so good anymore. Anyway, I love reading your blog 😍. You re so dang good at everything (singing, painting, photos, cooking and then and then 😁😁). To answer to your questions :
For VDay, nothing special cause we dont really celebrate in France. Movies and couche for cold nights.
At last, Thank you so much to be so true and openheart. So happy for the new house and your wedding to come 😊😊. Have à good week !
Taralynn McNitt says
You are absolutely the sweetest! & I think your English is great!!
Thank you for all your kind words and taking the time to write to me! xo

Hi Taralynn!
I have been following you and your blog for many years and have never had the courage to leave a comment, but your post inspired me to do it today!
I have enjoyed making a lot of your recipes through the years and following your journey 🙂
I just got married last April and bought my first home with my husband in October. I was so happy when you got engaged. I am excited to hear more about your wedding plans and cant wait to see your finished house!
Thanks for everything you do, I enjoy reading all of your blogs 🙂
Also- I LOVE that you play fibbage with your family. I also play jackbox games with my family- we were pretty obsessed with them over christmas break and played just about every night. Glad to hear that other families do the same!

Hi, Katie!
I’m so happy you’re commenting 😊 I love getting to know readers, so I hope you keep in touch!
Congrats on getting married in April and purchasing a home in the Fall! What an exciting time in your life. Looks like I’m following in your footsteps 😊
Ok…Jackbox games are HILARIOUS! We literally crave going over to my parent’s house so we can eat popcorn and play those games for hours. You’ll have to play the Draw one if you haven’t already!
Katie says
Thank you for your response!
Yes!! The drawing one is one of our favorites!
I will try to comment more and stay in touch 🙂
Thanks again
Taralynn McNitt says
Absolutely!! ♥️ Please do!!

I am an OG fan from the tumblr days! Please never stop blogging here <3 You are the best!
Taralynn McNitt says
That means the world to me! THANK YOU!

We picked up a heart shaped rib eye steak from a local butcher and cooked it for dinner for Valentine’s Day! Success!
We like to stay in and watch movies, with lots of blankets! We’re pretty boring lol
I also feel like I haven’t had time to try new things! It seems that I get bogged down with actually getting everything that MUST get done, actually done.
Taralynn McNitt says
Sounds perfect! Restaurants are usually crazy busy, so cooking at home is the way to go!
Not boring at all. I couldn’t relate more to that!
I thought the same thing until I realized that some of these “musts” weren’t actually “musts.” 😊
Have a great week!
Shelby says
Hi Taralynn! I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE your blog, and look forward to each and every post. I don’t have any social media, so if traditional blogging had to fade away/die, I would be really sad. You always put so much effort into your blog posts, and even though I don’t know you, you really do inspire me to be better. Have a great week!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Shelby!
THANK YOU!! Unfortunately, it looks like that’s kind of the route it’s going, but I’m going to try my best to keep it alive on my end as long as I can. People like short/quick content and that is where Instagram comes in. I appreciate your kind words though! That is the sweetest. You definitely just put a smile on my face!

Not sure I’ve ever commented on here before but have been reading/following for a long time. Also follow you on Instagram but have to say I prefer reading the blog! As a fellow doodle mom I love seeing pics of your pooches and am loving how the new house is coming together!

Hi, Mary! ♥️
Thank you for stopping by to read and your comment! Love that you’re also a doodle mom! 🐾

I grew up in fort mill and it was literaly all woods and old barns! Back in the late 90s, I watched it explode to what it is now, its crazy! Happy to see you had such an exciting week!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Ellen!
So cool you’re from Fort Mill, SC! 😊
I’ve always loved FM, and I’m happy to now be able to live there, but it’s truly crazy how fast it’s grown!
Mandy says
I always love your blog posts!
We didn’t do much for Valentine’s Day…unless organizing the kids’ social lives counts. 🤷🏻♀️
I love movies on cold winter nights. I am in Charlotte, too, so we haven’t had too many of those lately.
I finished a book just for fun this weekend. That is pretty out of character for me lately!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Mandy!
Thank you so much 😊
I think that definitely counts!
It feels so good to finish a book and have that time to yourself. 😊
Peggy says
Went out and enjoyed steaks and martinis for Valentines Day! Then met some friends for dessert.
There hasn’t been a cold winter night yet in South Louisiana…..but if there was I would make soup and read a book!
Yep, I am organizing which is VERY out of character. But it feels good and turns out it’s not as hard as it looks!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Peggy!
That sounds like a blast!!
That may be out of character, but something to definitely role with 😆 I started watching organizing videos on youtube and they always make me want to get up and start organizing everything in the house!
Andrea says
Hi there! I’ve been following your blog for YEARS and I’m so so glad you’re still sharing on this platform 🙂
For V-day we did a Bob Ross date night at home! We got canvases, brushes, paint, chose a landscape image online to recreate, and wore brown wigs to look like Bob Ross and we had an absolute blast.
We always default to popcorn and movies when we are staying in and we love it. Sometimes we’ll have some hot chocolate or chai lattes as well.
Nothing out of character for me, but I’ve been trying to get back to doing things I enjoy that I haven’t done in a while. Recently I threw pottery on a pottery wheel, have been learning yoga, I also decorated a cake for the first time in a while, and I’m trying to up my skincare routine 😉
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Andrea!
Thank you so much! 😊 This is my FAVORITE platform!
I think that is so neat you set up a Bob Ross date night. I may have to steal that idea form you! We like going to the paint classes, but it would be so much better to do it at home.
Mmmm hot chocolate and popcorn? Yes, please!
I love that you do pottery. I have always thought that was such a cool hobby, and I’m a sucker for pottery mugs!!
Thank you for stopping by!

Mostly silent reader here! I actually don’t have any social media accounts anymore and only read blogs for my form of phone entertainment. I will say it’s been a bit disheartening that most bloggers seem to just share on IG and don’t blog more. But maybe you have a point and I should be better about interacting on blogs since I do read them. Show my support in the blog world!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Lauren!
Thanks so much for stopping by and taking the time to comment. I think the quick interaction and convenience of Instagram has definitely kept people over on that platform, and it’s a lot easier to post a photo than write a blog, so I totally get why people would rather do that. I just put my heart here, and would rather spend my time on the blog and not on Instagram. I don’t feel as “ME” over there or feel like I get to know the people who read my blog. I think the best thing you can do for your favorite bloggers has just left a comment on their site! It doesn’t even have to be long or meaningful, just a simple “hi” lets them know that someone is on the other end of the screen reading ♥️ xo xo

My husband and I usually do a low key valentines but we concentrate on connecting and spending quality time together. I made a charcuterie board, we drank some wine and spent the night in.
We bought a turn table last Christmas, so most nights we listen to music, make dinner, relax and chat. It hasn’t been very cold in NC but once in a while we’ll light the fireplace.
I’m usually a really busy person, so I’ve been trying to do the opposite recently and do less which is completely out of character and difficult to do haha.
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Ashley!
That sounds perfect for Valentine’s day! Intimate and thoughtful! ♥️
I must be a chicken because my fireplace is lit every night if it’s below 50 lol
It’s great you’re recognizing that and taking the time to relax! So important.
Hope you have an amazing week!
Lauren says
Hi Taralynn!
we didn’t do anything too crazy on Valentines Day, just got take out and watched the proposal 🙂 our anniversary is on the 20th so we celebrate then! I live in Florida so there is no such thing as a cold winter night lol I wish there was though, I would love an excuse to just stay in and watch movies!
I am so excited to see your house! i hope you do a vlog right when it is done and then when it is furnished!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Lauren!
That sounds like the best Valentine’s Day to me! 😊 I love that movie.
You don’t need an excuse to stay in and watch movies ever! 😆 Happy early anniversary!! Hope you have an amazing day!
Definitely doing an empty house tour on the vlog and then a room reveal for each room!!
Bonnie says
I’m a silent reader and often catch the posts days after they actually post, so hesitate to leave a comment 🙂 I don’t instagram or tweet or Facebook (yes, old school), but try to follow about four blogs. I enjoy your positivity and beautiful photos, cute pooches and appreciation for life and family.
Beautiful cake and I’m impressed at your painting! 🙂 Looks like you had a well-spent weekend with new challenges, family time and exciting planning for the future.
We put a fire in the fireplace early on Valentine’s evening and binge watched “Unbelievable” on Netflix for way too long. Riveting, though, and based on true events. It was cold, had woken up and it was 0 that morning, -15 with wind chill.. so your photos from Hawaii earlier might have had me rather envious 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Bonnie! ♥️
Never hesitate to leave a comment! They truly make my day, even if they are on posts from 2010! 😆 & Thank you for the kind words!
This weekend was very good and relaxing! It was a cold and slightly rainy one, so definitely what I needed!
Cold indeed! Glad you had the cozy fireplace going! Kyle and I watched that a few months ago and it was sad, but good!
Hope you get some warm weather soon!
xo xo

I have been following and reading your blog since the tumblr! I truly love reading your posts and hope that other social media doesn’t mean that blogs get’s overlooked. This is such a more personal space and that’s what I love about it!
For Valentine’s day we got sushi take out with bubbly..perfect night in!
When it’s a cold winter night (which I’m in upstate NY so this is pretty often haha) we like to have friends over and play fibbage too! My favorite is the murder trivia one. We always have a blast and laugh a ton 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Hayley!
Thank you so much! & holy moly that’s been such a long time! Unfortunately, that’s what these bigger platforms are doing, but I’ll try my best to keep hanging in over here. I do love what you said about this being a personal space, and I think you’re so right about that. I’m not invested with my heart on Instagram, but definitely here!♥️
sushi and champagne!? yes yes, please! Also, that would be a great blog name 😆
Ohhh glad you also play fibbage! I feel like it’s a hidden gem! SO FUN!! Try the drawing one on Jackbox! It’s so funny!!!

Thank you for doing so much to keep the blog world alive. It’s my favorite platform, and I absolutely love your photography skills. Your pictures are gorgeous. It’s exciting watching all of the house progress. Keep the updates coming!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Michelle!
Thank you for that 😊 I’m going to do my best to keep the art of blogging afloat! It’s hard to compete against big platforms, but I’m determined!
I appreciate the kind words!!

Hi!! I always LOVE reading your recap posts. I am so excited for you, Kyle, and the pups to move into your new home. It’s been so fun reading along with all the changes in your life these last few years!!!!
My Valentine’s Day plans were Galentine’s Day plans with my sweetest girl friends at dinner!
Best cold night remedy is a night on the couch with my dog watching old Disney Channel movies with popcorn and hot cocoa!
I can’t think of anything out of character for me lately? I guess that means I need to branch out and try something new! Wish me luck!! xoxo
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Anastasia!
I always LOVE seeing your comments, and it’s so special seeing a familiar face!
We are just so excited and cannot wait for these new chapters in life.
I love that you had a galentine’s day with the girls! But a night with your dog watching Disney movies? EVEN BETTER! Especially with popcorn!
Yes, I think so too! 😊
Tarin says
Hi Taralynn –
I really enjoy your post & hate that blogs are fading because I don’t have social media.
My husband & I went to a Hammer & Stain class for Valentine’s day & created a set of signs for our bedroom. We don’t consider ourselves to be very crafty so it was outside of our comfort zone, but a lot of fun.
After being diagnosed with PCOS & completing an elimination diet I found I have a gluten & dairy intolerance. Where do you typically shop & what is your favorite non-dairy milk? Thanks!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Tarin!
It is definitely sad. I think the best thing to do is just engage with the blogs you love to read to encourage them to keep writing in this space! 😊 So thank you for stopping by to read.
I have never heard of a hammer and stain class. I’ll definitely look into that!
So sorry to hear about your PCOS. I definitely understand those struggles living with endo. I usually just stop at a local normal grocery store and find that so many gluten-free options are available now! Definitely more gluten-free bread options in the freezer section. I love Udis GF bread, Canyon Bakehouse is less expensive, and I always do unsweetened cashew milk because it’s super creamy! If you ever need replacement ideas or are looking for a the best brand for something, let me know!

Hello Taralynn 🙂 I have been reading your blog for years and your blog is the only one I read. I’m from Hungary, sorry for my english. I love your creativity and the way you organise your life. Taralynn McNitt says
Don’t apologize, your English is great!
Thank you for stopping by and for your kind words! xo
Tarin says
Thanks for the bread suggestions; I wouldn’t have known to look in the freezer section. I’m going on my first grocery run since my diagnosis so I’m hoping my local store (in a small town in Alabama) will have options.
I’m excited that your recipes can be easily incorporated into my new eating lifestyle. Everything you make always looks so good. Thanks again for the suggestions!
Taralynn McNitt says
Awww that’s great! Also try Thrive Market as well! They have a ton of gluten-free products for a more reasonable price! xo xo

Valentine’s Day will be celebrated later since my husband is a firefighter and was working. I am used to celebrating holidays whenever!
I read, do ballet, and take an hour long on-line French class every day. It is totally addicting.

Hi, Susan!
I have always thought about posting here more often but don’t want to oversaturate you all! I know that when I move the blogs will be coming in daily! 😂

So cool you do ballet ♥️

Hi Taralynn,
I love reading your blog weekly, I really enjoy your recap posts, recipes and creative projects! Your new house looks beautiful.
I spent Valentine’s with my boyfriend, we moved into our new house at the weekend! On these cold evenings I like to get cosy and watch an old favourite show or film. I loved Instand Family too!
I’ve recently joined a spinning and gym dance class with my friend, I’m not sure if it’s out of my character but it’s a change!
Thanks for sharing all the little things☺️ Rosie x

Thank you so much, Rosie! (By the way Rosie is one of my favorite names!)

My husband and I get each other (and our daughters) 5 small gifts leading up to Valentine’s Day. Makes for a fun morning surprise each day of the week!
Cold winter nights are filled with Disney plus and popcorn!
My daughter (3 years old) loves to paint with water colors. I recently started painting with her! It’s so relaxing to paint, even though I’m normally just painting a coloring book picture.
It’s so much fun to hear your updates! I am loving your new house and your wedding planning! Such a fun time!

Hi Taralynn!
I’ve also been a silent follower of your blog over the years. I just wanted to say, I’m so impressed with all of the work you do and that your blog truly represents your true self. You put so much love and kindness into your words and photos and it exudes to me as a reader to want to put the same out into the world.
Because of you and other blogger role models, I’ve decided to follow my heart and create a blog of my own. It’s not easy to create your own blog and following, but you’ve done it with such creativity, honesty, and dedication.
I just want to say thank you, from the bottom of my heart, because I look forward to reading your blog each time you post. You inspire a lot of us to want to do what you do.

Nothing special for valentine’s day. Just let my kids enjoy the day since we finally had snow! Cold winter nights are spent in front of the fire enjoying a basketball game! Nothing too out of character lately!

Hi, Kristin!
Thank you for stopping by and commenting! I totally get the “lurk” of blogs and do that too! I have been reminding myself to comment when I stop by stranger’s blogs. It just keeps the art of it going.
IT’S AWFUL! Did you see last night’s episode wow!!!
Thank you so much! Glad I can help out with cooking for your son. GF eating can be pretty easy when you get the hang of it.
How fun for them! We watched basketball on VDAY too 😊

Hi Taralynn! I spent my Vday in Pawley’s Island, SC visiting my boyfriend’s parents who recently moved there. We had vday dinner at an AMAZING Italian restaurant called Gio’s. I’m obsessed with their balsamic vinaigrette and was able to buy a styrofoam cup of it to bring home to Maryland haha!
Cold winter weekend nights are usually spent with jammies, something slow cooking in my dutch oven, and Netflix! I have zero desire to go out when it’s super cold.
Have you thought about what you want to grow in your future garden?! Veggies, flowers, both?!
xo Kelsey
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Kelsey!!
What a fun Valentine’s Day! You sound like me when it comes to restaurant dressings lol If I love something, I’ll have them pack some for me to take home too! 😆
SAME TO THAT! I do not do cold (anything below 50) well!
EVERYTHING 😆 I’m going to be doing raised vegetable gardens in the backyard and then surrounding my house with so many dahlias, hydrangeas, camellias, roses, and peonies! There is a field before you get to the creek in the way back of our house that I plan on growing wildflowers.

Loooong-time reader here (since 2011 Tumblr)! I would be super sad to see blogs fade away. Social platforms (especially Instagram) just don’t feel authentic to me. Maybe it comes from a life-long love of letter-writing and journaling, but scrolling through a social feed could never come close to being as enjoyable as sitting down to read a lovely, heartfelt blog post. And for what it’s worth, I feel like your blog has continued to be great over the years, whereas many others have gone so far into the marketing/promoted post space that they’re no longer enjoyable (Though, I understand the rationale for that). So, thank you!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Jen! 😊
I feel the same way. It’s hard to compete with for sure, but I’m determined to stick around on this blog platform for as long as I can. I appreciate your kind words about my blog, and i definitely strive to make this space relaxing like a journey rather than pushy affiliate links! I get that it’s not ideal from more income, but that’s not the whole point of blogging for me 😊

Hi Taralynn! First time commenter and long time reader:). Yours is one of the only blogs I still read – since your blog is so personal and each of your posts are like a mini story! Thank you for being so open with your life, for keeping away from too much of the “evergreen” post format, and for creating a blog which is such a lovely distraction from my daily life!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Anne!!
Thanks for stopping by too read and comment! 😊 I appreciate your kind words! You certainly put a smile on my face.
SO MUCH LOVE!

Hey! I’ve been reading your blog for years but I think I have never actually commented.
I love your blog, it always inspires me to be more productive and I love the new house contenet. Also I am amazed at how many things you are good at haha
1. Nothing special on valentines day, I worked and after just watched a movie because I was beat.
2. If I happen to be off on weekends (which rarely ever happens) I like to go out for food or drinks I like to walk around in the wintery atmosphere and then find shelter in nice places!
3. I am usually not very out and about and I am a person that enjoys herself and does not need to be a round people a lot..My jobs requieres some physical activity so after work I am usually very tired and just want to chill at home and on my off days I have no problem just going for a walk/shopping/going to eat/crafting/…. by myself or just staying hime with a good movie or book. I always try to plan everything, get enough sleep everynight,…
But lately I have been feeling like I am missing out and I am just letting life pass me by and I do not want to have any regrets later in life, so I have started to be more active and social. I now go out a lot, meet people, I do things after work even when I am tired and I try to do more spontaneous, crazy and fun things and to just live without overthinking 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Lisa!
Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment! 😊
Also, you’re the sweetest!
A movie on a Friday night sounds like the perfect way to end a busy day.
That sounds like an Ed Sheeran music video! & I’m all about that! 😊
I can relate to that so much. Sometimes I just want to be by myself and it’s easy to get into that routine, and I’ve also been pushing myself to hang out with friends more. Once you just do it, it’s so much fun. Sometimes getting into the mindset is the hardest part. I love that you’re recognizing this and being more spontaneous! That inspires me!
Have an amazing week!

I’ve been reading you blog since the beginning & look forward to it every week! I am so excited to see the photos of your new home as it all comes together. Also, I’m sure you already have purchased the book, but if not I highly recommend “Cut Flower Garden”. It’s SO informative & helpful 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
Thank you so much, Lindsay!!
I have that book smiles I need to definitely start reading it!! The photos are gorgeous.

Hi!
I am a long time reader and a first time commenter. I love your blog and look forward to reading it! It has been so sad seeing so many bloggers stepping away from their blogs in favour of Instagram.
For Valentine’s Day my husband was away so I got together with a group of ladies and we all took our kids bowling and out for dinner. Bowling with a group of 5 year old boys was quite the experience!
I am from Canada, but currently living in Turkey. We don’t get many cold winters nights. When we do, I like to have a fire and read.
With all the kids activities and volunteer work I try to use the downtime to slow down and read. That does not leave much time for new activities. Living here though everyday has a new experience!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Chantelle!
Thanks for commenting 😊
I agree that it’s certainly sad, but totally understand why they’ve made that decision. Instagram now gets the attention vs blogs, but I’m sticking around here for a while and will just try my best to encourage my readers to engage and to come back 😊
I love that! What a great Valentine’s day. I need to get out and go bowling! It’s been years.
I bet! What a fun experience though and I’m sure adjusting to the change is a challenge itself!
Please don’t be a stranger, and stay in touch!

Hi Tara!
I left you a comment on the previous post few days ago but somehow it disappeared and now I see it was never published 🙁 I guess I did something wrong when I pressed the submit button, eh 🙂
So here I am again!
First of all: I LOVE your blog, I’ve been reading you for around 8 years and I will always choose your blog rather than any random Instagramer 🙂 So I really hope you will continue writing and being as great as you are.
For Valentine’s Day my boyfriend suprised me with two tickets for West Side Story musical so we went for a dinner and to the theatre! I really like this move so it was an amazing night 🙂
At my cold winter nights I like to read a book, covered with a blanket and with a cup of tea. It really relaxes me a lot after a long day at the office,
I love the fact that you came back to baking and painting! I should to the same and come back to drawing.
I wanted to ask you if you already have plans with Kyle for you honey moon destination? Maybe you will come back to Europe? 🙂
Big hugs from Barcelona!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Milena!
Oh no! sorry about that. Sometimes the blog is weird with comments, but usually if it’s getting updated on the backend!
I’ve ALWAYS loved seeing your positivity and lightness here on the blog. I appreciate you always saying “hi!”
You have an amazing boyfriend, what a great date! ♥️
Yes, it’s been a blast, but I forgot how time-consuming a painting is 😆
We have Europe on our plan for sure!! We are trying to find a time maybe late summer of 2021 to travel Europe!!

Hi, Samantha!
How fun! 😊 Not creepy at all. I’ve been stalking the MB H&G facebook page trying to see who all my neighbors are! I’m happy you found my blog, and you’ll have to share all your tomato growing tips with me!

Hi Taralynn!!
I’ve read most of your posts here but only commented a few times. I really appreciate your concern about social media taking over- I feel like it’s taken over so much of our life now and like you said it can lack a certain authenticity that blogs and other activities create. I don’t think social media is going anywhere soon but hopefully users can become more aware and caution its use!
Anyways 🙂 to comments on your questions!
1. My husband and I never celebrate Valentine’s but it’s been making me sad not doing so! So I’m going to talk to him and hopefully we can make a bigger deal of it in the future! I just love those flowers Kyle got you btw!! <3
2. On cold winter nights I usually just watch tv! Nothing too exciting. I’m in Louisville so luckily it’s not as cold here as some places!
3. Lately I’ve been interested in gardening! So I went to the library and got a few books on gardening basics! This is COMPLETLEY out of character for me lol. I’ve never had a green thumb but now that I’m staying at home (just had a baby in August) I have some time that can be spent better!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Emily! ♥️
Thanks for stopping by to read and to comment!
I agree with everything you said. That’s why Kyle and I do phone-free nights and sometimes on the weekend. It’s so easy to distract our minds with mindless scrolling.
The cool thing about Valentine’s Day is that it doesn’t have to be anything big, but just a sweet romantic dinner together at home can do the trick! And it’s never to late to start up a sweet tradition! I’m just a sappy person for Valentine’s Day lol
Agree! I’m a pansy when it comes to weather, so good thing I’m in the Carolinas! Although, we are supposed to get a winter blast tomorrow! ahhh!
OH YAY! You’ll have to share everything you learn with me! I’m so eager to get into the house so I can start gardening this spring. Congrats on your new baby! What an exciting time in your life! xo

Thank you for your blog 🙂 I am a long time reader also and hardly ever comment. Sorry! I agree that so many bloggers are moving to Instagram and the art of blogging is really dying off! So sad! Thank you for sharing your life with us!! Personally, you inspire me to do so much more with my day and to remember to take pictures of things!
For Valentine’s day, my husband and I decided to take our two small nephews to a movie so that my brother and sister in law could getaway for the night. We did dinner together later that weekend and I too got pink roses! Thank you for sharing the cookie recipe!! I may be making them for a gluten-free friend soon! And that cake looked stunning!
We are currently remodeling our home and I love your style so I have been grabbing ideas from when you post things about your house build. Your new floors are gonna look especially gorgeous 🙂
Quick question: Do you ever go back and reread any of your blog posts to reminisce?
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Doraly!
It’s definitely sad, I get why they are doing it, but I refuse to leave this space! Thank you for taking the time to comment and say hi to me! Hope you continue! ♥️ I always love hearing from readers who stop by.
What a fun Valentine’s Day! You two are so sweet for giving your SIL & brother a date night out. How thoughtful! I’m sure they so appreciated and needed that.
Ohhh I hope you enjoy those cookies!!
yes, definitely!! It’s the beauty of having all of those old posts. I can look and appreciate how much I have grown! I mean, I started this blog before I was even in my twenties! It’s crazy.
Congrats on the remodel! ♥️ How fun! I hope you share photos with me when you’re done! I LOVE seeing remodels!

Hi Taralynn. I never leave comments but I’ve been following you for many years. 🙂 I really love to read about the life you share. I think the reason that ppl love your blog is that you are so inspiring. I mean you really seem to be a true, good-hearted person with a very creative and spontaneous personality. And in my opinion, creativity is what makes us alive. Although not everybody leaves comments, I think that there are many more silent readers from all over the world. I just wanted you to know that writing makes sense and we are here for you. 😉 Don’t stop writing. And I really can’t wait to see your wedding dress. 😉 Kisses for your dogs. 🙂

Also loving your house updates!

Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Brooklyn!
That lack of engagement has a way of making blogging seem a bit pointless sometimes. If I can get instant engagement from sharing on Instagram, why work so hard to keep the blog afloat? That sometimes goes through my mind, but there’s something so therapeutic about blogging. I’m going to to try my hardest to stay on this platform as long as I can 😊
I hope you continue to blog!
XO
Taralynn McNitt says
PS! I just tried to leave a comment on your blog after reading a few amazing travel posts, but I kept getting a “debug error” so you may want to look into that! I don’t want yo to be missing out on comments! xo xo
Brooklyn says
Thank you for letting me know! I’ll look into that.
And I completely agree. It’s hard to put so much work into a blog when you get instant engagement elsewhere. But blogging really is therapeutic, so I love it.
But I’ll say I love your blog and hope you do it for years to come!
Taralynn McNitt says
Thanks so much, B! xo

I have always been a really shy person, so it took me a while to comment, but I recently started! I found your blog right in the midst of a really, really hard breakup in late 2015, and it inspired me so much. I was really determined to live a healthy lifestyle and I really feel like there is something therapeutic about reading and relating to other people’s stories. Honestly, I think you touch more lives than you might realize, and you’ve inspired a lot of bloggers (including me!) out there. 🙂
On Valentine’s Day, we grabbed a gluten-free pizza and salad and just hung out playing video games and watching YouTube. It was pretty low-key, but I love nights in like that.
I love to deep-clean the whole apartment on Saturdays and light a nice candle, so the evening nights are spent relaxing, reading, and cooking (especially soup) or baking.
Hmm, not recently, but I’d like to! Maybe I’ll put in some thought as I anxiously await spring.
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Breeanna!
I’m so happy you’ve started commenting and I always love seeing your comments here! 😊
Breakups are so incredibly hard, but I appreciate every single breakup because they helped me grow as a person and I would never be where I’m at right now if it weren’t for them! I’m so happy to see you are thriving and still sticking around! 😊 Thank you for those sweet words! That means so much!
That sounds like the perfect valentines day! I always get sucked into watching Youtube, but it sounds even better with gluten-free pizza!
Nothing better than a deep clean and a candle to top it off!!
spring can’t come soon enough!!

Love your recap post!
Just an idea, to get the red tint out of your hair you should try using Matrix purple shampoo. I did that after I died my hair red and hated it. It got the brassy tone out of my hair. Now I just tone my hair when I get it trimmed to get the brassiness out instead of dying it. Works like a charm, is so much less expensive and less maintenance! 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Becca!
I’ll look into that! Sounds exactly like what I need!
Courtney Snider says
1) My boyfriend and I typically do not do much for Valentine’s Day. We rarely go out for supper as we stick to a decently strict budget and enjoy cooking at home. We decided to treat ourselves and went out for a nice meal on Saturday to avoid the crowds. We got some appetizers, steak, and they treated us to a free dessert. It was a nice night out!
2) It has been FREEZING where I live, so we have had to keep ourselves entertained inside. We had plans to go ice fishing but it was waaay to cold to go (-47C/-52F). We decided to have friends over for brunch, bake oatmeal chocolate chip cookies, and play cribbage in the evening. Sometimes when it is this cold I wonder why I live where I do!
3) I haven’t done anything super out of the ordinary lately. I did sign up for a trial month at a local gym that offers classes, which is slightly out of my comfort zone. I typically go do workouts alone at my regular gym but wanted to try to new class-style workouts. I tried a Barre class which was enjoyable but a bit of a challenge. I am waiting to be booked in for leg surgery on the muscles in both of my lower legs, so although I am safely able to do the class, it was a bit more difficult for me because of my diagnosis (chronic exertions compartment syndrome). I am glad I stepped out of my comfort zone a bit though as I enjoyed the class and will definitely want to continue once I get my surgery!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Courtney!
I’m happy you guys went out for a dinner together! Sometimes it’s so nice to have someone else cook for you, and it sounds like you did it the right way by going on Saturday!
WOAH, now THAT is cold. I officially have nothing to be complaining about! You should look into Jackbox TV games for when you have friends over. It’s such a fun game to play with friends over.
Classes are great. It just takes a few times of going before it becomes a routine and you get comfortable with it. I used to go all the time and loved the familiarity of it! Oh, and I agree pure barre is tough!! Hoping you have a safe surgery and a speedy recovery!!
Chantelle says
Loved this post and seeing the progress on your new home. You must be so excited! Also, I totally agree on blogs losing their steam and having less engagement. It makes me sad because the blog content is so much more robust than instagram and other social media channels. It’s like our attention span is getting shorter and shorter!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Chantelle!
Thank you so much 😊
Our attention span is certainly getting shorter, which is why bloggers are moving their work towards Instagram. I just hate that blogging is losing the art and molding into more “searchable” content if that makes sense. Thank you for stopping by and for the support!
Maria says
Hey Taralynn! I’ve been reading your blog since 2012. It’s helped me through some rough times. As someone who works in a role where public feedback can really give me a boost, I am really glad you put that call out for blog comments. It’s important for me to pay it forward. Plus I don’t have personal social media accts so I wouldn’t have said anything there. I really appreciate your being connected to the outdoors and being open about taking care of yourself! Thank you! 🙂 Pardon any typos
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Maria!
Thank you so much for following along for all of these years! Honestly, where does the time go? I’m just passionate about this blogging space, and I hate seeing it being taken over by other social media platforms, and I’m going to try my best to bring attention to it!
Thank you for the kind words and I hope you have the best week!
Sarah says
Hi Taralynn! long time reader and occasional commenter. I love that you’re keeping your blog the main focus rather than instagram. Don’t get me wrong, I love seeing your stuff on instagram too, but sometimes feel that the whole platform gets a little too “influencer-ish” from you tubers and such that I follow. My fiancé and I have both been working crazy hours lately so our Valentines day consisted of take out and watching a movie at home and it was just what we needed. As for doing anything out of character, I can’t really think of anything new that I’ve tried recently other than wedding planning. ahh!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Sarah!
I couldn’t agree more with what you just said! I think instagram is definitely more “influencer-ish” for sure! That’s why I never feel completely myself over there. It can be fun, but it certainly doesn’t give me the excitement that blogging does ♥️
I think takeout and a movie is the best Valentine’s Day date!
Wedding planning is definitely fun, hectic, expensive, but fun 😆

Hi Taralynn,
I am so excited to see your house finally finished. I love seeing all of your posts and following along on your Instagram account for your house. It’s going to be beautiful! I’m actually thinking about making a flower garden this spring. I saw y’all are planning one as well. What types of flowers are you planning to plant? My husband and I actually went out for a nice dinner at our favorite local Italian restaurant on Valentine’s and then came home and watched our current show Game of Thrones (yea we are late to the game watching it 😂). It was a relaxing night!
Taralynn McNitt says
Thank you so much!!!!!
The flower garden is going to be my favorite part. I want to do a ton of different perennials and annuals. This spring I’m going to start my climbing roses, a few camellia trees, crepe myrtles, peonies, and hydrangeas. I’m also going to plant soooo many dahlias and ranunculus. 😊 I’m thinking about doing a few lavender trees too.
You’re not alone on that. I’ve never seen an episode lol but that sounds like a great Valentines!
