The Best Sausage Stuffing Recipe | Only 5 Ingredients!

This easy sausage stuffing has been in our family for decades and always makes an appearance at our holiday table! Made with just 5 simple ingredients, it’s savory, comforting, and absolutely perfect for Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner. A timeless family-favorite side dish everyone will ask for again and again!

My mom has always been in charge of bringing the stuffing for Thanksgiving whenever we host at our house. She even makes a vegetarian version for my brother by swapping the sausage for vegetarian sausage and using vegetable broth instead of chicken broth. Her stuffing is always the star of the show! I’ve actually never had to make it myself since she’s always handled it, which made me realize I’ve never shared her recipe—or even learned how to make it. I figured it was about time, especially since we’re heading to my mother-in-law’s house for Thanksgiving this year, and it’d be nice to know how to make it in case I get put in charge of the stuffing!

I have a lot of my Thanksgiving recipes up on the blog already, but this year I’ll be creating a page with our entire holiday menu and linking all the recipes in one place. I also want to make sure I share my brother and my roasted turkey recipe—it’s a must! So, you may be seeing a bunch of Thanksgiving recipes popping up over the next few weeks.

Five Ingredients to Make Easy and Delicious Sausage Stuffing

  • 1.5 pounds pork sausage
  • 1 cup finely chopped celery
  • ½ large sweet yellow onion, finely diced
  • 12 ounces herb-seasoned cubed stuffing (Pepperidge Farm is our go-to!)
  • 32-ounce carton of chicken broth

Notes:

*You can easily swap the pork sausage for vegetarian or turkey sausage if preferred.

*Make sure to purchase cubed stuffing and not the “classic” version, which is crumbled.

*Around Thanksgiving, it can be tricky to find the cubed kind in the regular aisle—it’s usually displayed in one of the store’s Thanksgiving kiosks. Walmart often has a giant display, and I like to grab a few extra bags since they sell out fast this time of year!

*Pepperidge Farm Herb Seasoned Cubed Stuffing is our family’s staple. I can always count on Walmart to have them. I’ve also used the Whole Foods brand which is also great, but sometimes I don’t feel like driving 30-minutes to my nearest store!

Yesterday morning, after dropping my son off at preschool, I called my mom to get her instructions and ingredient list for the sausage stuffing. We had some of our good friends coming over to let the kids play, and I figured I’d make dinner for everyone while they were here! I decided it was the perfect time to finally attempt my mom’s famous stuffing recipe. Safe to say, it was so easy and simple that it turned out perfect! Why did I ever think stuffing was intimidating? Silly me! This stuffing recipe was completely eaten up by the end of the night.

Let Me Show You How Easy This Recipe Is to Make!

How to Make the Best Sausage Stuffing

Step One:
Preheat your oven to 350°F. In a large skillet, fry the sausage until cooked through. Transfer the sausage to a separate bowl, but leave the remaining grease and browned bits in the pan — that’s where the flavor is!

Step Two:
Add the chopped celery and onion to the same pan. Cook until the vegetables are tender and the onions start to turn slightly golden.

Step Three:
Once the vegetables are cooked down, add the sausage back into the pan and cook for an additional minute to combine the flavors.

Step Four:
Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish (I highly recommend using glass or ceramic) and pour in the bag of stuffing cubes.

Step Five:
Pour the sausage and vegetable mixture over the stuffing cubes. Gently fold everything together. Then pour about ¾ of the chicken broth evenly over the mixture. Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes.

Step Six:
Remove the foil, pour the remaining broth around the edges, and bake for another 15-20 minutes — or until the top and edges are lightly golden. You can give it a gentle stir halfway through if you’d like, but it’s not necessary. This will help any of the stuffing from getting too soggy or even too dry.

Step Seven:
Enjoy!
