Breastfeeding and Lactation Cookies

One of my closest friends had a baby a few weeks ago, and I couldn’t be more excited for her! One of my favorite things to make for my postpartum friends is a batch of these chocolate chip oatmeal lactation cookies—because let’s be real, new moms need all the snacks.

I shared a photo of these lactation cookies I was sending to my friend on my Instagram story a few days ago, and so many people were asking for the recipe! At first, I hesitated because I’m not pregnant and didn’t want to spark any speculation. But then I thought—who cares?!

You don’t have to be a breastfeeding mom to enjoy these cookies. They’re delicious, packed with good-for-you ingredients, and make the perfect snack for anyone. 

My own breastfeeding journey was tough. My milk supply was super low because my body still thought I was pregnant due to retained placenta particles. My milk didn’t fully come in until after my procedure, and to make things even more stressful, this was during the formula shortage—so it was a really scary time.

My lactation consultant gave me a list of ingredients to add to my diet and suggested things like lactation cookies and energy balls. I ended up making these cookies every single week, keeping a stash in the freezer, and sometimes switching things up by adding cranberries, walnuts, or extra dark chocolate. My husband even got caught sneaking a few from the freezer (anyone can eat them!)



Did they actually boost my milk supply?

Who knows—every body is different, and there’s no magic cookie that works for everyone. But they were delicious, filling, and perfect for those late-night feedings when I was absolutely starving. And honestly, that alone made them worth it! 😊

How to Make Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the oats, flour, brewer’s yeast, flaxseed, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt. Set aside.
  • In an electric mixer, beat the butter and coconut oil until creamy. Add the sugar and mix until light and fluffy.
  • Beat in the eggs one at a time, then mix in the vanilla extract.
  • Gradually fold in the dry ingredients until just combined, then stir in the chocolate chips.
  • Roll dough into balls (about 95-100 grams each) and slightly flatten them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
