Save Your Money: Cook Your Own Breakfasts.

Breakfast spots seem pretty cheap, and they are compared to dinners at restaurants. But, making breakfast at home is so much more cheaper. Sure, it’s a lot more fun to have people serve you fresh coffee and food, but one breakfast at a restaurant can equal six breakfasts made at home.

I went to Stacks on Wednesday for breakfast. My coffee, omelet, and hash browns came to $14.00. It doesn’t seem too expensive until you add up what you could make at home for that price. When you cook at home, you don’t have to charge yourself extra for only using egg whites or other swaps.

Breakfast Groceries:
1 1/2 dozen organic eggs: $4.00
1 package whole grain english muffins: $2.99
Jar of jelly: $1.85
Coffee for the week: $5.00
Total: $13.84

Six Breakfasts a week:
$2.30 Per Breakfast.

Even if you added more to your breakfast like: fruit, bacon, or orange juice, you’ll still be saving a ton of money. After doing some thinking and adding it all together, I realized that I spend way too much money on dining out. This is what I have to do to live up to my New Year’s resolution and try cutting it out.

I usually don’t buy ingredients for Sunday breakfast because I usually eat out after Church.

I’ve been all about eggs lately because they never get boring with the flavors Ralph taught me how to add to them.

-3 Large Eggs, 1/2 tablespoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon onion powder, sprinkle of black pepper, and 2 tablespoons light cream.

Grease the pan with olive oil.

I let one side cook like an omelet and then scrambled them up once that side was done. The olive oil gives the bottom a nice crisp. (not a burn)

I had a whole grain english muffin with grape jelly and a shot of green juice with my eggs.

This breakfast is so filling and perfect for a pre workout fuel. I usual wait about an hour after eating before working out.

  1. Holy crap, how privileged ARE you that $14.00 doesn’t seems expensive to spend on ONE meal?! Hell, I think $7, especially for what you’re ordering at the restaurant is way overpriced. I wish I had your money. Care to donate, please?

    1. I was thinking the same thing haha. $7 is probably the maximum I would pay for breakfast out, and only on special occasions, definitely not everyday. Jealous.

  2. I like the newly added “products in this post” at the bottom haha. I bet you got a lot of questions about “what is that?” “what brand?” “where can I get it?” Haha, myself included! Thanks!

  3. I love this post, Taralynn. I’m just like you- I love to cook but I really enjoy going out to eat for the social aspect and less hassle. It’s crazy how much eating up adds up, though!
When you say add light cream to the eggs, are you doing liquid cream or cream cheese?

    1. Thank you!! 🙂 I add a light cream (like half and half or the one you put in your coffee) It sound weird but its amazing in eggs.

      1. When I was really young, my grandpa used to add honey nut cheerios to eggs while they were scrambling, so I’m very open to unusual things being put in my eggs and them being delicious 😉

I’ll definitely be trying it- thanks!

  4. Yeah… if breakfast isn’t under $6, I usually have to opt out. It’s fun to go places, like you said, but honestly I enjoy my cooking just as much and my coffee is ALWAYS better 😉
I like that you broke down the prices!

  5. You need to smack starbucks Right in the face with this one. One sandwhich is like, 6 dollars! What? And it doesn’t fill me up.

  6. I love eggs! I like to saute some spinach and then add eggs to it.Yummy!
I wanted to say Thank You for all your recipes! Your Fruit Pizza and Turkey/blackbean burritos are FREAKIN AWESOME! I’ve made those burritos so many times that my husband actually got tired of them and wont eat them anymore. Lol. Oooops. But its okay, more for me.:D
Also, Seems like on every other post somebody has something negative to say about you or the way you live your life. Just ignore them and don’t let them bring you down. That’s their whole reason for commenting and trying to make you feel bad! Most of them are just unhappy with their own lives, so they get jealous when there is somebody out there who is happy and lives their life to the fullest!

  7. Wow, $14 is actually very expensive for breakfast, especially for what you are getting. I rarely spend that for dinner. Maybe it’s because I live in the “diner capital of the world” (NJ) but anything more than ten dollars seems unreasonable, IMHO.

  8. Sounds great! Is your shot of green juice, the Suja? I have seen some at Target and was wondering how they were…do you recommend?

  9. Wow – the comparisons in price are huge – I’m curious about the costs of eating out in the US? Here in Australia it’s quite normal for me to go out with bf/friends and breakfast is at least $25 per person ($20US). Granted, I live in a town with only independently run and owned cafes – i’m guessing Stacks is a chain store (like Starbucks or McDonalds) to have such cheap prices?

  10. I thought your Stacks breakfasts were only $5.20?
Didn’t you say that in a previous Stacks post?

    1. It was the first time I went there! That was before I did the egg whites, added seasonal fruit, and toast! They’ve also raised their prices like crazy.

      1. Oh my gosh! That’s a ridiculous price rise!
Boycott Taralynn! Maybe it’s time to create your own Breakfast House?

  11. I love making breakfast at home! Especially my own english muffins, ita just more fun, accomplishing, anf satisfying and of course, saves a few $$ 🙂

  12. Who in their right mind would spend $14 on an egg white omelette, fruit, and toast? 😛 Like, why even bother?

  13. What did you put in your green juice shot? Just got a juicer for Christmas and now I’m always on the hunt for a new juice recipe! Thanks!

  14. jeez- i don’t see what’s wrong with you spending $14 on breakfast if it’s something you really enjoy. you can’t help what others can/cannot afford or don’t want to spend money on.
i definitely am going to try to cook my eggs the way you do! my fiancé and i have a favorite breakfast place that we try to go to once a week.. they have pancakes that taste like cake batter and are the size of a dinner plate! there’s no way i can recreate them, so they’re a nice treat a few times a month =]

  15. Sorry I know this post is a little late but I just wanted to say that…I LOVE this new egg recipe!! It’s my new favorite way to make them! thanks so much! And thank you to your friend Ralph too! 🙂
