Asolo is a charming town in the Veneto region of Northern Italy, surrounded by centuries-old walls, stone gates, villas, and ruins, all offering breathtaking views. Known as “The Pearl of the Province of Treviso” and “The City of a Hundred Horizons,” I truly experienced the beauty of its many horizons during our hikes and explorations around the town. It’s one of the most stunning villages in Italy, yet it still feels like a well-kept secret.

Looking back at my photos of Asolo, Italy doesn’t make me sad to be away. It excites me. I know I’ll be back one day. I’m certain I left a part of my heart there, and I’ll need to return to find it again. Should I even be writing a guide to Asolo, Italy? It’s one of Northern Italy’s most charming, hidden gems, and there’s a part of me that wants to keep this treasure a secret. But then, the people of Asolo, the hotels, cafes, restaurants; they all deserve to be discovered. Their dreamy town just pulls you in. Even Ernest Hemingway was inspired by the enchanting town of Asolo.

Asolo feels like stepping into the Italy I’d always imagined in my mind, the one painted by dreams and old-world charm. I don’t just want to travel there; I want to live there. I want to wake up each morning at the renowned 100 Horizons, sip coffee overlooking sprawling vineyards, and talk with the locals who pour their passion into everything they do.

The connection I felt with Asolo was unlike anything I’ve experienced on any other trip, and it stays with you long after you leave.This guide is a love letter to Asolo, a place that feels like a piece of my own heart tucked away in Northern Italy.

Getting to Asolo, Italy

It was a long travel day. We made the rookie mistake of hitting the road on a Saturday, right when everyone else was, too. If you’re planning a drive like this, I highly recommend choosing a weekday to skip the traffic. We left Füssen, Germany, around noon and finally arrived in the beautiful town of Asolo around 7 p.m. After hours of bumper-to-bumper, it was almost surreal to arrive in a town that felt so calm and empty. Most of those other travelers were headed to lake towns, Verona, or Venice. I wonder if they even knew a hidden gem like Asolo was tucked along the way.

Even though it was a long trip, the drive felt like a dream. I’d seen photos of the Alps, but nothing could match the real thing…their massive peaks, the snowy tops blending right into the clouds. We drove through the stunning Alps of Germany, Austria, and Italy. This was, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful drives I’ve ever taken. Thankfully, my husband drove, because I was busy snapping endless photos of the scenery.

Travel Tip: Choose a weekday for longer roadtrips to avoid weekend traffic! 

Staying in Asolo, Italy –Hotel Villa Cipriani

When I started planning our trip, I wanted a mix of relaxation and a location that wasn’t completely remote. This spot was perfect, truly! Staying at Hotel Villa Cipriani was the ultimate Italian experience. It was luxurious yet relaxing, not overly fancy, so you never felt out of place, and the staff made everything incredibly convenient. Want coffee? It’s available. Hungry? So much to choose from. Ready to explore the town? Just step out the front door! We didn’t even touch our car during our three days in Asolo. Everything was walkable, and each stroll felt like wandering through a real-life painting, with historic viewpoints, beautiful buildings, sculptures, fountains, and charming cobblestone streets. Most of the time, we only passed a few people, which was refreshing compared to the shoulder-to-shoulder crowds you often find on Italian vacations.

Where to stay in Asolo, Italy

Hotel Villa Cipriani 

Villa Cipriani was built during the Palladian Era, dating back to the 1500s, and it once served as a beautiful villa during the Renaissance. In the late 1800s, it was purchased by the English poet Robert Browning, who restored the villa to match the stunning atmosphere of Asolo’s Tuscan hills. Can you imagine being a poet living in Asolo? The inspiration would be endless, making creativity almost too easy.

After centuries of different owners, it was transformed into the stunning and luxurious Hotel Villa Cipriani in the 1960s. Since then, it has undergone many restorations to maintain its elegance and charm throughout the years.

The location of Villa Cipriani was just perfect. It was the ideal place to return to for relaxing by the pool, stunning walks through the gardens, enjoying delicious food, and soaking in the views from the terrace overlooking the City of 100 Horizons. I’ll have so many more photos of this gorgeous hotel in my blog post, along with more highlights. I can’t wait to go back, and I’m so glad we chose this spot to stay!

Dinner in Asolo, Italy

When we arrived in Asolo, it was starting to get dark. We didn’t stop for a meal along the way because we wanted to reach our destination faster. By then, we were starving! Our tired, jet-lagged eyes couldn’t imagine staying awake for a fancy dinner at the hotel’s restaurant, so we decided to take a quick two-minute walk into town to find a spot that would welcome us without a reservation. It’s worth making reservations for dinner (lunch is never an issue) to ensure you have a table. This also gives the restaurant time to prepare, as much of their food is made fresh.

Travel Tip: Most restaurants open for dinner around 6 p.m.

As we strolled through the cozy streets of Asolo, we were pleasantly surprised to find so many open restaurants. I didn’t expect a smaller town to have so many dining options, but Asolo is buzzing with businesses. We passed a quaint and cozy restaurant filled with families enjoying their meals and decided to give it a try. 

They had a few tables left, and even though we hadn’t made a reservation, they kindly seated us for two.

As I’ve mentioned before, I’m not much of a drinker, but I do love the taste of Prosecco. If I had to choose a drink, that would be it! Since we were in Prosecco country, I just had to celebrate our first night in Italy with a glass to accompany my first real Italian meal.

I ordered the lasagna alla Bolognese, and it sent me into another world. This charming little restaurant, with its red and white plaid tables, served me the best lasagna I’ve ever had in my life. Mom, why were you serving me lasagna with cottage cheese and Prago sauce all those years? What else have I been missing out on? That night, I spent hours googling authentic lasagna alla Bolognese recipes, and I can’t wait to hit publish on this blog post and then rush into the kitchen to celebrate by making the recipe I found online. Be sure to follow me on Instagram to stay updated on how that turns out! I love you, Mom, but I’m never eating your lasagna again. My children will not know cottage cheese lasagna! I am on a mission to learn how to make THIS one. I guess it all started when your mom used Heinz ketchup as spaghetti sauce, so I forgive you.

After savoring every single bite, I contemplated ordering another serving. I have pretty good self-control, but I almost told my husband to get his own after he started stealing more bites of my dish. It wasn’t my fault he ordered chicken and veggies at an authentic Italian spot! If I were to fly back to Asolo tomorrow, this lasagna would be at the top of my list.

There’s no way I could have enjoyed such an amazing meal without ordering dessert! I had them pack up a piece of tiramisu to take back to the hotel with me. It was delicious and the perfect way to end my very first night in Italy!

Breakfast at Hotel Villa Cipriani

I absolutely loved breakfast each morning at the hotel. My husband and I are early birds, so we would wake up and take a little stroll around town before making our way to the breakfast area around 7 a.m.

The breakfast was delicious, offering a menu you could order from and a buffet filled with fresh bread, fruit, cereals, desserts, and more. Oh, how I miss that amazing morning coffee. It was heavenly! I had so much coffee in Italy that when I returned home, I cut back to just one cup a day (and I’m still going strong on that!). I’m the type of traveler who wants to try every coffee shop in town, and I mentioned that in my last travel post. Some people love visiting wineries, but I’m all about finding a cute café.

Why Did I Choose Asolo, Italy, for Our Vacation?

I received a lot of messages asking how I discovered Asolo and what made us decide to visit. Honestly, I was looking for a place to relax. Between being a mom, the stress of markets, working, keeping the house in order, and navigating all of life’s craziness, I was feeling exhausted. I often say, “I really want a place to just relax,” but after an hour, I’m usually ready to get up and explore. Asolo offered the perfect blend of both worlds. It’s small enough to explore without feeling overstimulated by attractions or crazy crowds. It was quiet and cozy, just like I had imagined.

Originally, we were going to visit Venice (and we do plan to go one day), but when I came across this villa and started reading about Asolo, I knew I had to convince my husband to spend three days there instead. He took one look, and said “let’s do it.” We skipped Venice and embraced the charm of a country village, where we could read, relax by the pool, and take walks through vineyards and olive groves. 

Travel Tip: Asolo, Italy, is only an hour from Venice, making it the perfect spot for a day trip!

Asolo had everything we needed: restaurants, coffee shops, bakeries, hiking trails, and historic spots to explore. When we were tired, it was just a five-minute walk back to the hotel to unwind by the pool with pizza, a cappuccino, or a good book in the garden. We didn’t have to worry about parking, navigating public transportation, or standing in long lines because everything was right there.

This was the small village with the Italian villa I had pictured for our trip, and it delivered exactly that. This is a hidden gem in Italy.

What to Do in Asolo, Italy – Explore the Town

On our first day in Asolo, we decided to make no plans. After enjoying a delicious breakfast, we freshened up and headed out the door to explore the charming village and its winding streets. We were excited to be surprised by whatever we discovered along the way.

Old Churches in Asolo, Italy – Chiesa di Santa Caterina

Chiesa di Santa Caterina was our first stop in Asolo and truly felt like the city’s oldest historical attraction. Built in the 14th century by the Confraternita dei Battuti, it features a simple façade with a central oculus.

Inside, you’ll find stunning frescoes from the 14th to 16th centuries depicting scenes from the life of Saint Catherine and the Passion of Christ. The church, which was expanded in the 16th century, retains a beautiful wooden ceiling and was historically connected to a charity hospital for the needy. We loved walking around the church looking at all the art.

A Day Out in Asolo

The best part about our hotel’s location was how you could step right out the door and find yourself in the heart of the village. Yet, just on the other side, you were surrounded by the rolling hills of Asolo. It was like having the charm of the town on one side and the beauty of the countryside on the other.

Piazza Garibaldi: Asolo’s Main Square

The streets from the hotel lead down to Piazza Garibaldi, the vibrant heart of Asolo. This lively square is home to numerous coffee shops and restaurants, all overlooking the beautiful Fontana Maggiore. If you want to soak in the atmosphere, Caffe Centrale is a perfect spot to grab a coffee and a treat while enjoying the bustling life of the square, where locals gather to socialize. We enjoyed a light dinner there during our last day, and it was such a fun spot to sit. The fountain was blocked off for construction during our visit, but I’m excited to see it in all its glory when we return.

This is a great spot for anytime of the day! You go in and order, bring it outside to enjoy! 

Corte Del Re – Asolo, Italy

One of my favorite aesthetic spots in town, right in square, was Corte Del Re. This charming shop offered artisan bread, cheeses, meats, jams, and sophisticated souvenirs. Outside, you could enjoy wine and food under the stunning trees, which were just beginning to show their autumn colors.

Castle of Caterina Cornaro: Asolo, Italy 

The Castle of Asolo, once home to Queen Caterina Cornaro of Cyprus, is one of those places you just feel the history as you walk through. It’s been around since the 10th century, starting off as a wooden structure, then getting a stone upgrade a century later. Over the years, it’s been everything from a noble’s home to a World War I prison! The castle’s three towers, especially the Civic Tower, or Clock Tower, are still standing strong. Climbing up to the belvedere is a great way to see gorgeous views of the town and rolling hills beyond. This whole “City of 100 Verizons” is no joke. 

The courtyard is such a pretty spot; there’s a little restaurant where you can sip wine and snack while soaking up the scenery. Even after Queen Caterina left, the castle’s been transformed a bunch of times, but it still keeps that charming mix of ruins and beauty. And with that tower clock peeking out from just about anywhere in town, it’s like the castle’s always watching over Asolo.

Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta – Asolo, Italy

The Asolo Cathedral is packed with history. The first mention of it goes way back to 969, and since then, it’s had a few makeovers. By 1584, it started to look more like what you see today, though in 1606, they had to rebuild parts of the roof, apse, and main altar after some damage. The 18th century brought even more updates with architect Massari giving the inside a refresh.

The inside is gorgeous, with three naves and big stone columns. At the main altar, you’ll see two beautiful angels by Giuseppe Bernardi, and there’s a 1491 baptismal font with Queen Cornaro’s coat of arms which is such a cool touch from her era. Plus, there are some stunning altarpieces by Lorenzo Lotto and Jacopo Da Ponte. Outside, the cathedral’s façade was redone in 1889 by Pietro Saccardo, blending the newer look with its old, classic charm.

Zen Fountain of Asolo – 1571

Just past Villa Freya, you’ll come across a charming little fountain with cool, fresh mountain water. There’s even a sign asking furry friends to find other watering spots nearby. Fun fact: the fountain’s name isn’t from some mystical origin; it’s actually named after the family who built it back in the 15th century!

Asolo’s Civic Museum

The Civic Museum, right next to the cathedral is a great spot to learn more about the rich local history of Asolo. Head to the Civic Museum of Asolo to learn more about Asolo’s rich local history. The museum is packed with art and history on all three floors. 

Touring Villa Freja Stark & Gardens

People kept telling us to check out Villa Freya Stark, so naturally, I had to look her up. I got totally sidetracked reading about Freya herself, she was such an inspiring, and captivating person. The villa tour is definitely worth it; the gardens and views are just breathtaking. Highly recommend!

Who is Freya Stark?

Freya Stark was a groundbreaking British explorer, writer, and photographer whose solo travels took her deep into some of the most remote and politically complex parts of the Middle East in the early 1900s. Known for her fierce spirit, intelligence, and humor, Freya was one of the first Western women to explore the Arab world. She was often venturing boldly where even the most intrepid travelers hesitated to go.

But she was more than an adventurer; Freya was a storyteller and a cultural bridge, bringing the Middle East to life for her readers back home and showing the West an authentic view of these diverse cultures. Her life and work left a permanent impact on travel writing and our understanding of the Arab world and she made it fascinating and relatable and opened the doors of exploration for many women who followed.

After all that exploring, we were ready for a light lunch and an afternoon cappuccino stop, so we headed to Café Commercio! It felt like every coffee shop in Asolo had its own outdoor seating and views, each more gorgeous than the last, and Commercio was no exception.

These cappuccinos truly spoiled us; every single one was perfection. Since returninghome , we’ve been on the lookout for the perfect cappuccino machine and might splurge after Thanksgiving if the one we’re eyeing goes on sale! The cappuccinos in Italy were so creamy and delicious that I even ditched my usual oat milk and went with the whole milk. Normally, I’m pretty picky about milk quality in the U.S., so I stick to oat milk since a lot of shops just use the cheapest dairy they can get. But here? Totally worth it.

We couldn’t resist the raspberry jam-filled croissants with flaky, buttery, and just the right amount of sweet. We also split a salami and burrata ciabatta sandwich, which was fresh and delicious, pairing perfectly with our cappuccinos.

After lunch, we walked back to the hotel to enjoy some time by the pool before getting dressed for our dinner reservations.

I loved wandering around the hotel, taking in all the beautiful grapevines, olive trees, and colorful flowers against the gorgeous scenery. The infinity pool offered breathtaking views of the rolling hills, and what really stood out to me was how peaceful it felt, even with the hotel fully booked. It seemed like everyone was on the same page—here to unwind and enjoy the serene atmosphere. In the afternoon, you could order drinks, lunch, and snacks to have on the garden porch overlooking the pool. Sometimes, I’d bring my coffee outside in the morning to catch the sun rising.

I was so excited for our dinner reservations! We cleaned up after hanging around the pool all day, and headed into the town to make it to our spot!

La Terrazza Restaurant – Asolo, Italy

We arrived about 45 minutes before our 7 PM dinner reservation, just in time to catch the sunset while sipping Prosecco on the porch. The porch overlooked the gorgeous town of Asolo. You won’t want to miss the travel video in this post—there’s the CUTEST little cat sitting in the window, just watching us and the whole city go by!

Cooking Lessons at Terrazza in Asolo Italy

For my first course, I enjoyed the assoluto di verdure, a delightful combo of green vegetables, hummus, and crispy carasau bread. It was so fresh and tasty! The vegetables in Europe are 10 times better than in the states. 

The Best Pasta in Asolo, Italy!

The real star of the meal was the classici paccheri di Gragnano al pomodoro. I could cry just thinking about how far away this pasta is! Each bite had my eyes rolling back in my head…it was that good! Every single flavor was absolutely perfect! Seriously, I’d happily devour 50 more of them! Oh my gosh, it was just delicious! If you find yourself in Asolo, make a reservation to have a nice dinner at La Terrazza Restaurant, and make sure to order this! 

We had to waddle back to the hotel after stuffing up.

Shopping the Town & Having Gelato at Gelateria Browning

The next morning was all about exploring and shopping, and boy, did we do a lot of walking! After all that activity, I had definitely worked up an appetite for some delicious gelato. I couldn’t resist picking out the pistachio flavor, and let me tell you, it was absolutely divine!

Asolo is surrounded by stunning wineries. If you’re planning your visit, be sure to reserve your tours in advance! Many wineries also offer horseback riding and biking through the vineyards.

We dedicated the rest of the day to lounging by the pool, soaking up the sun, and enjoying the stunning beauty of Villa Cipriani. It was the perfect way to unwind, read a good book, and simply relax in such a gorgeous setting. A true slice of paradise! The weather was in the mid-70’s for the most perfect pool day.

We couldn’t resist ordering a few Aperol Spritzes to sip while we lounged and read—because when in Italy, right? I absolutely love that the hotel has a restaurant where you can order drinks, tea, or coffee right by the pool. If hunger strikes, you can head up to the Bistrot Rosmarino for lunch.

Where to Eat in Asolo, Italy: Favilla Asolo

After spending a relaxing afternoon and day around the hotel, we headed out for an early dinner at Favilla Asolo. It’s located in the sqaure. We started things off by splitting a fresh salad, some housemade bread, and a bowl of bigoli cacio e pepe. Now, let me tell you, it looks a bit deceiving at first glance! The dish came in a deep bowl brimming with pasta, and I was pleasantly surprised by just how much there was.

This was my first time trying bigoli cacio e pepe, and I absolutely loved it! As a red sauce gal, I didn’t think I would enjoy a white pasta sauce dish so much, but this one convinced me to give it a chance. It was simply AMAZING! It has already made its way onto my list of recipes to try and recreate soon.

After lunch, we headed back to the hotel for more reading by the pool. This time, we swapped our outfits for cozy clothes and brought along a throw blanket to snuggle up in as we watched the sunset. Now, this was what I called relaxation!

Things to do in Asolo, Italy

After breakfast, we decided to head out for some adventure! 

Climb up to the Rocca – 12th-13th Century Asolo Fortress

We put on our hiking clothes and set out for La Rocca, the 12th–13th century fortress perched at the top of Monte Ricco. Its old stone walls may be rugged and unadorned, but the real prize is the view from the top and so worth the climb! After soaking in the sweeping sights and wandering around the fortress, we kept the adventure going with a three-mile nature walk, taking in more of the beautiful Asolo countryside.

As you leave the fortress, look for the sign pointing to Centro Storico (Historical Centre) near the steps down to town. The hike back is super easy—great for all skill levels, shaded, and full of little interactive stops and overlooks. Plus, the nature scenery along the way is absolutely beautiful!

Travel Highlights of Asolo, Italy

Rich History: Asolo is coated in history, with its roots tracing back to ancient times. There are so many historical sites to explore giving you a glimpse into its past.

Stunning Views: Known as the “City of 100 Horizons,” Asolo has breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding hills and countryside, a photographer’s dream.
The Food: The local cuisine was life changing. Each meal was made with fresh ingredients and traditional recipes. This is a great spot to enjoy authentic pasta and pastries at local eateries.

Cozy and Charming Cafés: Asolo is filled with so many cute cafés, perfect for enjoying a cappuccino or gelato while soaking in the gorgeous views and quaint little streets.

Outdoor Activities: There are plenty of outdoor adventures like: hiking and nature walks, horseback riding, bike riding, running the hillside, and everything is done with a view

Local Wineries: The surrounding region is known for its wineries, and they offer tours and tastings. Make sure to reserve ahead to enjoy the local wines. Some even offer picnics, dinners, and horseback riding.

Art and Culture: Asolo has a big art scene, with galleries showcasing local artists and cultural events happening throughout the year. I had the urge to get a canvas and sit in the square and just paint. There’s something about the city that makes you inspired to be artistic.

Warm Hospitality: The locals are known for their friendliness and warmth, and we always felt welcomed and at home in Asolo.

Exploration of Surrounding Areas: Asolo is a great base for exploring nearby towns and attractions, including the stunning Prosecco Road and other beautiful spots in the Veneto region. It’s not far from Venice and Verona.

Relaxation and Leisure: Asolo is the most perfect spot for a peaceful getaway. It’s a quiet slow-paced town that encourages relaxation, and stopping to enjoy the simple pleasures in life. 

After two hours of hiking, we stopped in the square for brunch at Gilda Patisserie Bistrot, and it quickly became one of my favorite cafes in Asolo! The staff was incredibly friendly, making our visit even more enjoyable. With a tempting selection of baked goods to choose from, I’m grateful I didn’t discover this gem on day one; otherwise, I would have felt the need to return every day to try even more treats! I couldn’t resist picking up some chocolates to bring back home to the family.

Gilda Patisserie Bistrot: Asolo Italy

We both ordered creamy cappuccinos, a cream-filled croissant, and some delicious sandwiches. The food was so good that we couldn’t help but go back inside to grab a few more sandwiches to take with us for later. This was THE BEST croissant I had during my entire trip. The outside was so flaky and crispy.The filling was heavenly.

We planned to leave Asolo early the next morning to make it to Verona for breakfast, so we packed up all our luggage before heading down around 4 PM for an early dinner at Rosmarino Bistrot. Since we intended to go to bed around 7 PM (an acceptable hour for us jetlaggers), we didn’t want to eat too late.

I was especially excited about trying the pizza after seeing a couple enjoying it a few days prior; it looked amazing! We sat on the gorgeous patio overlooking the town as we indulged in a margherita pizza, complemented by a fresh salad drizzled with balsamic glaze and olive oil. 

At a nearby table, I spotted a group of ladies, perhaps in their late 70s, dressed in the most vibrant attire imaginable. I’m talking bright colors, fur coats, jewels, and feathered hats. They were so sweet laughing together, and truly enjoying themselves. I couldn’t resist capturing their joy, so when I saw them trying to take a selfie, I offered to snap a photo for them. They looked absolutely fabulous, and it was a must to get that head-to-toe shot against the stunning Italian backdrop! I hope to be that one day.

After dinner, I grabbed my one last cappuccino for the day, and sat by the pool to enjoy it.

Just a short stroll from the hotel down Via Santa Caterina, you’ll encounter the most breathtaking gardens. Take a small side road (via fosse) that leads you to the vineyards, where you’ll be greeted with an incredible overlook of the entire town of Asolo. The view is nothing short of spectacular, and it becomes even more enchanting when the church bells start to ring. It’s a truly magical experience that you won’t want to miss!
