We celebrated our four-year wedding anniversary at the Old Edwards Inn back in February! It was such a cozy weekend in The Highlands. While summertime is ideal for mountain town bed and breakfasts, I loved visiting in the winter! I took some time away from blogging last year, but I figured Iโ€™d share some photos from our trip while sitting on this nine-hour flight to Germany!ย

The weather will be cold soon, so anyone looking for a bed and breakfast stay in The Highlands may find inspiration from this post! Oh, and fall is a stunning time to visit, with vibrant foliage, pumpkin spice lattes at the coffee shops, and seasonal dishes in the restaurants. We can’t wait to get back there soon! This is the perfect spot if you are looking for getaways close to Charlotte!ย

Buck’s Coffee Cafe in Cashiers

Just outside of The Highlands, we stopped at Buck’s Coffee Cafe in Cashiers! Itโ€™s a super cozy coffee shop, cafรฉ, and gift store. With plenty of outdoor seating, cozy tables, and couches, itโ€™s the perfect place to relax. The food looked delicious, and I ordered my go-to: an oat milk cappuccino! This was the perfect spot to stop for coffee if you’re coming from the Charlotte area.

Blue Bike Cafe Breakfast & Lunch – The Highlands, NC

We arrived around noon, and since our room wouldnโ€™t be ready until later, we stopped at Blue Bike Cafe for brunch before grabbing coffee and exploring the townโ€™s shops. I ordered the delicious chicken salad toast. The Highlands, Highlands North Carolina, North Carolina Mountains, Traveling Blue Ridge Mountains, Traveling to The Highlands, Vacations near Charlotte, Bed and Breakfast North Carolina, Bed and Breakfast Highlands, The Old Edwards Inn, The Highlands NC in the Winter, The Highlands in the winter, taralynn travels, Travel blog, winter guide, cozy mountains, cozy getaway north Carolina, romantic getaway, romantic bed and breakfast, coffee in bed, anniversary trip, anniversary stay, the best place to stay in the highlands nc, calders coffee, coffee shop, downtown highlands nc, downtown shopping in the highlands, old edwards spa, the old edwards inn travel

The Old Edwards Inn & Spa, Highlands, NC

We checked into the hotel at 3 p.m.! It was a rainy weekend, which forced us to relaxโ€”watching movies, reading by the fire, and staying in instead of exploring and hopping from place to place like we usually do when traveling. I’ve never been good at staying put!The Highlands, Highlands North Carolina, North Carolina Mountains, Traveling Blue Ridge Mountains, Traveling to The Highlands, Vacations near Charlotte, Bed and Breakfast North Carolina, Bed and Breakfast Highlands, The Old Edwards Inn, The Highlands NC in the Winter, The Highlands in the winter, taralynn travels, Travel blog, winter guide, cozy mountains, cozy getaway north Carolina, romantic getaway, romantic bed and breakfast, coffee in bed, anniversary trip, anniversary stay, the best place to stay in the highlands nc, calders coffee, coffee shop, downtown highlands nc, downtown shopping in the highlands, old edwards spa, the old edwards inn travelWe had a beautiful view! Theย Old Edwards Inn and Spa in the Highlands, North Carolina, is a cozy mountain getaway with charming European vibes! It was built in 1878, and has been featured in so many popular publications. It truly is a gem for the Carolinas. It has cozy fireplaces, lush gardens in the summer, and the stone buildings make it feel like you’ve stepped out of the states.

Our room had those cozy cottage vibes, and I loved the little private terrace outside the door. It overlooked some of the hotel and the town. We turned on a movie, and watched the rain with the doors open.ย

The location of the Old Edwards Inn is super convenient. The Inn is right in downtown Highlands close to boutique shops, dining, and beautiful trails. Itโ€™s a great spot for exploring the nearby mountains and waterfalls. The rain stopped us from the trails, but adding it to the list for next time!

Calders Coffee Cafe – Highlands, North Carolina

I had the best afternoon pick-me-up to keep me warm while walking around the shops. I ordered the Appala-Chai at Calderโ€™s Coffee Cafe! Itโ€™s a twist on a chai latte with a hint of apple flavor. It was so delicious that I even recreated my own version at home because I missed it so much! I made sure to grab another one before we hit the road for the drive home. Calders Coffee Cafe had gifts, baked goods, fresh eggs, and other delicious goodies.ย

They had a super sweet anniversary gift in our room to kick off our celebration! They gave us a warm baked chocolate chip cookies, chocolates, a handwritten card, and a rose. It was super sweet!

Hummingbird Lounge

We had a few hours to spare before dinner, so we headed to the Hummingbird Lounge in the Bed & Breakfast for a charcuterie board and cocktails. The buttermilk crackers were the best crackers things I’ve ever had! They even sell them in their gift shop. You have to try them if you visit.

For my drink, I had the gorgeous Sapphire Spritz that came with Butterly pea tea, lemon, and soda. It was delicous, and so pretty!

Madison’s Restaurant – Dinner at Old Edward’s Inn & Spa

For dinner, we had a reservation at the Madison Restaurant downstairs at the Old Edwards Inn. It’s a farm to table style menu, just what I love!ย The Highlands, Highlands North Carolina, North Carolina Mountains, Traveling Blue Ridge Mountains, Traveling to The Highlands, Vacations near Charlotte, Bed and Breakfast North Carolina, Bed and Breakfast Highlands, The Old Edwards Inn, The Highlands NC in the Winter, The Highlands in the winter, taralynn travels, Travel blog, winter guide, cozy mountains, cozy getaway north Carolina, romantic getaway, romantic bed and breakfast, coffee in bed, anniversary trip, anniversary stay, the best place to stay in the highlands nc, calders coffee, coffee shop, downtown highlands nc, downtown shopping in the highlands, old edwards spa, the old edwards inn travelย The Highlands, Highlands North Carolina, North Carolina Mountains, Traveling Blue Ridge Mountains, Traveling to The Highlands, Vacations near Charlotte, Bed and Breakfast North Carolina, Bed and Breakfast Highlands, The Old Edwards Inn, The Highlands NC in the Winter, The Highlands in the winter, taralynn travels, Travel blog, winter guide, cozy mountains, cozy getaway north Carolina, romantic getaway, romantic bed and breakfast, coffee in bed, anniversary trip, anniversary stay, the best place to stay in the highlands nc, calders coffee, coffee shop, downtown highlands nc, downtown shopping in the highlands, old edwards spa, the old edwards inn travel, old edwards inn restaurant

I headed downstairs to fill up my coffee cup, and then walked around the town for a little bit enjoying the fresh mountain air! The town was so quiet on Sunday morning, and every so often a snow flake would fall from the sky.ย

Breakfast – Highlands, NC – Madison’s Restaurant

We had breakfast at Madison’s Restaurant (the same place we had dinner!). There are plenty of breakfast spots in Highlands, but we wanted the full Old Edwards Inn experience, and breakfast did not disappoint. I started with an almond milk cappuccino.

Fork and Plough Greenville, SC

We stopped at Fork and Plough for and early dinner in Greenville, SC on our way home. I had their Italian sandwich, and it was pretty good. The chips were the star of the dish!

Questions for you!

  1. Do you have a favorite bed and breakfast you like to stay at?
  2. What type of winter traveler are you!
  3. Cozy up with a book or movie?
