Good morning, everyone!
I hope you all had a fantastic weekend and a fun 4th of July. It was our first time celebrating the 4th in the new neighborhood and wow, was it a blast. I can’t wait to show you all the photos. This morning, we are having our garage epoxied, so I’m going to get this recap written while they finish up in there and before I head out on my daily walk. It’s supposed to be rainy all day, but I’d rather walk in that than the hot sun + humidity.
It’s been a goal of mine to walk daily. I try to fit in 4 to 6 miles, which can be difficult when it’s scorching outside, and my neighborhood is an up and down route. The hills make it feel like I’m doing an entire HITT workout. When I go by myself, I like to listen to a podcast, or most of the time, I’ll go with Kyle (since he’s been working from home) or my neighbor! Having people walk with always holds me accountable. The reason I’m pushing myself to walk more is that it makes a difference in my moods and productivity level. When I don’t walk, I find myself fidgeting and not being able to focus.
On Monday, I walked six miles but jogged some of the time. I like to cheat and only jog on the downhills. 🤫
When I got back, I showered off, had some coffee, and got to work on my blog! I usually have a cup before the walk and then a cup after.
For lunch, I had a bowl of fresh cherries, 1/2 gluten-free canyon bakehouse bagel, lettuce, tuna salad, and Greek dressing on top. Kyle and I spent the rest of Monday night hanging out by the pool and then watching a movie. I think I had frozen chicken nuggets for dinner! It was one of those kinds of nights.
After finishing up some work on Tuesday morning, I had crackers and tuna salad for breakfast (weird, I know) and decided to give Grumples grooming in the garage.
I was going to film the process, but it was just so hot, and I wanted to get it done quickly without messing around with cameras. I’ll make sure to film the next round in the fall. I cut his hair with a 2 to make sure it’s not too short for the summer. He loves it when I groom him. He lays down and pops his leg up to make sure I get all the spots. It’s the bathing part he doesn’t like. He grows so much hair that I could stuff a few pillows with it.
After the grooming session, I cleaned up and then headed out for my walk. It was a HOT one, so 4-miles was good enough for me!
I had a salad with pea crisps, tuna, and greek dressing when I got back.
Double rainbow after a quick afternoon shower!
I made eggs and vegetable pad thai for a quick dinner. We’ve done the “see how long we can last without groceries” thing last week.
One thing I’ve loved lately is our refrigerator. It has a water infuser that always stays cold and refilled. All you have to do is change out the fruits and place them back into the fridge. I am drinking so much more water now. My favorite combo is clementines, cucumbers, and lemon!
I ended the night reading The Dilemma, and it’s so good! I’ve been waiting a year for this book! I love everything B.A. Paris writes. I’ve been thinking about doing another recipe + book review with this one.
I feel like I always manage to skip Wednesday entirely, so let’s hop over to Thursday!
After doing some projects with Kyle around the house, I spent an hour doing my nails with my Gel nail kit my mom bought me for Christmas. I finally unpacked it. I love it, but I just need some recommendations for good gel polish.
We met our neighbors down by the pool and spent the rest of the evening, chatting and relaxing. When I got home, I found the new Booch Pop from Health-Ade on my doorstep! I was so excited to try the new flavors, but even more happy about bringing them down to the pool to enjoy! Dinner was frozen gluten-free pizza and chicken nuggets with ketchup. I’ve back-peddled into my toddler tastebuds this week.
On Friday morning, my neighbor and I did six miles! We started early to beat the heat and did a few of the miles on the trail since it was shadier. After our walk, I made fresh juice (pear, pineapple, oranges, celery, cucumber, ginger, apples, and grapefruit) and brought some over to enjoy.
On Friday night, Kyle and I headed to the Duke Mansion for a date-night picnic in their gardens. I can’t wait to share those photos! It was such a special evening.
After our date-night, I started a few of the 4th of July recipes so they’d be ready to go the next day. First up, the scotcharoos! These are so easy to make and delicious! They are pretty popular in the midwest, and every time we had a party growing up, my mom would make a huge batch.
4 miles for the 4th of July!!
We spent the afternoon hanging out with my parents and then headed to the pool since our neighborhood hired a band to play for the evening. This place is so fun on the 4th!
We had a huge spread to celebrate and fill our bellies before the firework show. We had some friends and neighbors over to celebrate.
The raspberry lime white tea was amazing. I’ll get that recipe out soon! We did jalapeno cheddar burgers and caramelized onion turkey burgers. They were amazing! We bought a small gas grill that doesn’t take up too much space, and it’s portable. We didn’t want one of those huge grills to take up space on our porch. I think I like this little grill better than the one we had at my townhome.
Pasta salad recipe is coming soon! 😋
How about those scotcharoos?! Our neighbors made gluten-free macaroni and cheese (SOOOOOO GOOOOOOD) and homemade baked beans. Now, this is what summer is all about!!!
This was one of the most fun 4th of July’s since being a kid. It was unbelievable because the firework show was literally in a field two houses down. If you saw my Instagram story, you know how close it was!
Such a fun night! (😆 Kyle’s gardening shoes)
I mean…💥
We spent the following afternoon at Ikea and then cleaned/rearranged the house that evening before dinner and a movie!
Two movies we watched over the weekend that you should att to your list: Desperados and Inheritance! 😉 Both really good!
We had such a great week, and I’m already looking forward to the next 4th of July!
I’ll probably pop on the blog tomorrow to share photos from the Duke Mansion picnic! Stay tuned for that! 😊 Have a great day! I’m heading out to get my miles in! 😊
Questions for you!
- Did you get to watch fireworks this year?
- Have you ever had a scotcharoo?
- Are you fitting in daily walks?

Hi Taralynn!
1. I did see some from my house! (But it was on July 1st since I’m Canadian) 😉
2. Never heard of that before!
3. I try to take daily bike rides 🙂
May I ask what podcasts you like? I’m always looking for good ones. thanks!
Taralynn McNitt says
Awww how fun!!!
Bike rides are amazing! I need to get my bike out soon!
I usually listen to boring political podcasts lol nothing to share!

Love Political podcasts! Which ones are you listening to? Always looking for new ones 🙂

How fun! I love scotcheroos! I’m from Iowa and they are basically a staple at any event that involves food. 😄 Yours look amazing! 💕
Taralynn McNitt says
Yes!! Scotcharoos are an IOWA staple!
Carly says
I also only jog on the down hills on my long walks! Haha it makes me so happy to hear I’m not the only one! 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
Lol it speeds up the miles but also gets the heart rate going!! You won’t find me willingly running UP the hills though! lol

How did you have a fourth party? Almost everything is closed down because of COVID-19. Did you social distance? Wear masks? I would love more details on this as many people look to you as a role model. It’s our duty to keep others safe!
Taralynn McNitt says
I didn’t have a party. Our neighbors came over, a close friend, and that’s it.
The restrictions/closings are also different in all states. South Carolina hasn’t had restrictions since April, even then they were light based on the cases here.
We don’t wear masks at my house, but when we are out in public we do. If someone wants to wear a mask here, anywhere, wherever, that’s fine. I think a mask is anyone’s decision and I respect them if that do/don’t. No one is forced to come over and celebrate the 4th. I think everyone knows their comfort level and anyone reading my blog is old enough/smart enough to make the best decisions for themselves.

I live in Florida and personally feel the sting of watching everyone Celebrate the Fourth as if there was nothing happening in the world. The fact of the matter is many young people are partying and can be assympomatic and spread the disease. Unfortunately 16 year olds are dying in Florida just as older people too. I think in the states where their ICU beds are FULL speak for themselves. We watched fireworks on t.v. this year and kept to ourselves. We continue to wear masks and social distance. It isn’t about politics. We haven’t been able to see loved ones in a nursing home since February! So please, before you judge people for being disappointed in your celebration – take a step-back and see things from our point of view. I have always read your blog and supported you. I am not going to judge you for not wearing a mask – or for not social distancing. But don’t judge us back harshly when we have death on our doorstep in Florida and other states. Thanks!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Jen.
I never once judged anyone. I don’t know where you read that. I actually said I respect other people’s decisions and I feel as if we made a decision we were comfortable with. We watched fireworks from our backyard with neighbors and never had a “party.” I also don’t understand why it would be political? That seems strange to throw in there. Everyone can make their own decisions when it comes to their comfort level. Good for you for keeping to yourself and watching fireworks from your living room. That sounds like a decision you felt safe with, which is great for you. I watched them from my backyard. I didn’t realize we were confined to the inside of our homes? I think it’s important to not be so hard on other people. The world could use a little more of that right now. 👍 Your last comment about “don’t judge us back harshly” Extremely confusing as I have never judged anyone for their opinions or decisions. I’ve always been a big believer in letting people be and live the lives they choose to live. I really don’t know how you got any of that out of my response. I’m so confused. If you feel as if my 4th of July with about five other people in my backyard is harmful to you or others, you can proudly unfollow and move along. I think it may actually be in your best interest as it seems you don’t actually comprehend what I write anyways.
Jen says
I’ll be moving along then, not because of your Fourth plans but because I felt you were surprisingly rude in your reply since you unfortunately misunderstood me as well. I was referring to wearing masks is a political issue these days. *was not refering to your post or get-together. I never said people should be confined to their living rooms. I was simply saying that in states with high counts of COVID-19 that hopefully people safe distance and wear a mask. People definately should only do what they are comfortable with. I have been a long time reader of your blog. The world definately could use more kindness these days. Best wishes to you. Sorry you think unfollowing you is in my best interest. Take care.
Taralynn McNitt says
I agree that it is in your best interest and mine as well. Best of luck!
Caleynn says
I don’t see where Taralynn judged anyone. I see where you twisted her words like most people looking to pick a fight about covid on the internet.
Leianna says
I personally love your celebrations here. Here in Iowa we had a wonderful time camping and enjoying super warm weather at pools that are open here. You are doing a great job at keeping your spirits up. Keep going girl!!!
Taralynn McNitt says
♥️ thank you!
Becca says
You don’t live in a vacuum. You could be asymptomatic and feel safe going maskless around a neighbor, to whom you may transmit the dsiease. Thenthat person may spreadit when he/she goes to the store. You can’t just think about yourself. It’s not “whatever feels good to you.” It’s “What is helpful to everyone else?”
Taralynn McNitt says
And it’s that neighbor’s choice to come over. It’s the neighbor’s choice to wear a mask around me. I’m all about respecting choices.
We wear masks in public places, stores, and outings.
I’m not going to wear a mask at my house. Simple.
Becca says
It’s not safe to meet up with people whom you don’t live with without a mask. That is how transmission happens. Take responsibility for your own actions. If you don’t want to wear a mask in your home, def don’thave other people over. It’s easy.
Taralynn McNitt says
Or make that decision for yourself?
Having five people over from next door (whom we’ve been having dinner with, going on walks with, hanging out at the pool with) for the past months was our decision and their decision. Just seems like everyone wants something to get their panties bunched up about.
Jess says
Taralynn,
You did nothing wrong. People are looking to attack anything influencers do nowadays. I know those people may seem to be the louder mouths in your comments but thousands support you and love seeing the normalcy in your daily blogs. I come to your blog as an escape and I appreciate everything you do. You’ll never win arguing with trolls because it looks like they put words in your mouth anyway. Your real readers know you and I love that you’re not being phony like other influencers pretending to be what they are not on the internet. You’re the breath of fresh air that we all need on the internet right now. Your Karens may be sad to know that I had ten girlfriends over for drinks on the 4th and I’m a nurse.
Jess
Taralynn McNitt says
Thank you, Jess ♥️
Ellen says
It is irresponsible of you to say masks are someone’s decision. The mask is to protect everyone else, you not wearing one makes people around you less safe. So no, it is not up to each person and what they are comfortable with. Our country is seeing a huge uptick in cases because selfish people like you choose to ignore the recommendations. I haven’t seen my family and friends in months because I want to be as safe as possible. I certainly am not hanging out at the pool or having a few neighbors over. I hope you see this Tara, because im sure you won’t let it be posted on your blog. Please think about everyone who is fighting this virus and everyone who has already lost their life. And remember that people look at you blog and may think this stuff is ok, you have a chance to teach people what they should actually be doing right now.
Taralynn McNitt says
I said at my house a mask is someone else decision. So yes, at my house IT IS what they are comfortable with. If they want to wear a mask at my house, completely fine. But I will not wear a mask at my house. Also, the recommendations are different in every state. People forget that.
I also said that I DO wear masks in public places.
I’m not going to be on the blog “teaching people what they should be doing” when the state has guidelines for that. Every state is different. I also think people are smart enough to make their own decisions on what they feel comfortable with. I’m not here to tell people what to do. There are enough of those in the world.
I will stand by what I feel is right.

Hey Taralynn,
It’s pretty obvious to anyone reading this that Jen is just looking to shame and judge others for their actions, and that you are being very reasonable in you approach to your small gathering and respectful of others’ safety while still wanting to live your life. Don’t worry about it– any reasonable person can see that you didn’t do anything wrong.

I’m in Tucson, AZ and all our fireworks were cancelled due to our mountain being on fire (it ended up hitting 100,000 acres burned) and we are MAJORLY spiking in covid here. So much that all our ICUs are completely full and we are having to engage crisis mode in our hospitals. Even if we did have fireworks, I was at work on the 4th. I’m a nurse so having to deal first hand with the major covid crisis. The 4th was definitely disappointing this year, but honestly I don’t really feel like celebrating our country right now anyways. Now those scotcharoos look like something that would bring up my mood a little bit 🙂 That is awesome the fireworks were so close! I love fireworks under normal circumstances.
Taralynn McNitt says
Scotcheroos always help 😉

I LOVE the 4th of July and all the festivities that follow! Your get-together looks like it was so fun, and the food looks sooo good. It must be really fun to live in a neighborhood like that. I’m glad you are enjoying living there so much!
My husband and I didn’t watch fireworks this year–we actually went and camped out near Mount St. Helens and enjoyed a quiet evening to ourselves. Don’t get me wrong, I totally love watching fireworks!
No, I have never tried a scotcharoo, but they look delicious!
Yes, daily walks are my favorite! I can definitely tell a difference when I have been going on walks vs. when I haven’t been.
Taralynn McNitt says
Thanks, Holly!!!
Wow camping sounds like so much fun! ♥️ bet that was a peaceful time.
Ohhhh add scotcharoos to your list!

I’m a relatively new follower of your blog. You are so creative. Your dogs are adorable. I live in interior Alaska so we are in our ‘season’ of daylight (almost 21 hours), so we don’t see fireworks in the summer. We have them on New Year’s Eve. I love scotcheroos! I try to fit in daily walks. It is always fun to see what you have been up to. 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Sonya!
Thank you so much 😊
WOW 21 hours of daylight. Still crazy for me to try to envision what that must be like!
Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

Just wanted to send some support and love your way after reading some of the comments. It’s a stressful time for everyone and it says a lot about your character that you not only keep up the comments that disagree with you, but respond to them in such a classy and articulate way. We celebrated Canada Day (July 1) in a similar way, just a small BBQ at a friend’s house 🙂 Ps – I’m drooling over those Scotcheroos, they must be an american thing because I’ve never seen them before!
Taralynn McNitt says
Thanks, Patricia.
Just think people are extremely cooped up and the internet is the best place to get some action. I think it’s ok to disagree with others, but you can’t let the way people live their lives bother you. It’s also 2020, which means no matter what you do, you’re doing SOMETHING wrong.
Happy belated Canada Day! I bet your bbq was a blast and what better activity to do in the summer! Ohhh you need to try those Scotcharoos!!! They’re so good.

*Also went to a pool party and had people over to her house* No one is angry at her for watching the fireworks from her backyard. We’re angry that selfish people are endangering our whole country because they can’t wear masks and social distance. No one should be hanging out at a pool or let alone sharing food at someone’s house.
Taralynn McNitt says
lol, why do people keep throwing the word “party” in here? Going to the pool and sitting on a pool chair watching a band? YOU’RE STRETCHING!
Emily says
Please don’t stop the recaps even though people are rude!!! No matter what anyone does now it’s never “right” so we just have to be smart, think of others and treat everyone kindly, and move along. On another note and just out of curiosity, are you eating dairy now? The pasta salad thing + mac n cheese made me curious! Giving up dairy would probably be for my best interest, but it’s just so dang good!!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Emily!
Thank you for that. That means a lot! & you said it well.
I wrote in a few other blog posts about sometimes eating dairy, but trying to avoid it most of the time.
As long as it’s gluten-free, I’ll look past the dairy. Dairy isn’t good for my skin/or endometriosis, but sometimes it’s just not avoidable. So to be more clear, I avoid it at all cost, but eat it when I want it! lol

I was in Kiawah Island for the 4th! I loved it. They didn’t have fireworks, but we went with another couple. We shot a few simple ones with them. I love, love your blog posts! They put me in a great mood, especially since I work from home, too. It’s really motivating me to get back into doing long walks. What did you get from Ikea? I’d love to see those recipes you mentioned!!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Suzanne!
I want to visit Kiawah Island so bad and I bet that was a BLAST on the 4th!
We bought some floor lamps for the living room, garage organizers for our gym project, and a new rug! I was so overwhelmed in there 😆

Lordy, people, be nice to one another or don’t say anything at all!
Taralynn, thank you for continuing to post your uplifting weekly blog posts. They bring so much joy to my week.
I’m an ICU nurse who worked 4th of July this year. My only complaint about people celebrating with fireworks is that my overly sensitive dog can’t stand them and they make it harder for me to get to sleep and get rested. My dog was an anxious mess after being home alone the 3rd and 4th so I ended up taking the 5th off to be home with him. I did watch a few out of our bedroom window but I would rather have been sleeping!!!!! Sigh.
I don’t like scotcharoos but plain rice krispie treats are my favorite. I don’t like when traditional desserts have added mix ins to fancy them up.
I have been walking 4-8 miles every day if weather allows and I’m not working. Funny you mention BA Paris- I just got a library lend The BREAKDOWN which I plan to listen to on my walks this week. I loved behind closed doors and wanted something similar to keep my interest for these long walks. I feel so much better when I get a long walk in too!
Hope you’re having a great week down there- stay safe and keep spreading joy-
Jenny
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Jenny!
Thank you for your kind words! ♥️
My dogs were pretty anxious as well! Luckily they were fine once we got into the house with them. But the fireworks after midnight are just annoying lol
You can’t go wrong with regular rice krispies, but you have to be a butterscotch fan for scotcharoos!
Nice work on your walks!! So much better with books too 😊

Just wanted to say- I’m a physician assistant who was deployed to work in the ICU with COVID patients in Michigan (one of the hardest hit states originally). I’ve worked long stressful days in the chaos of it all for many months. But I see nothing wrong with the way you spent your 4th! I wear masks and social distances in public. However, I see my parents regularly and see many of my neighbors in my backyard for drinks on our patio on a weekly basis. It just seems like people want to be upset lately! Your responses to others are very mature and classy when it’s not your responsibility to justify your actions to them in the first place.
I’m glad you had a good 4th! I absolutely love your new home and yard. My family has been discussing moving to North Carolina and your pictures make me want to even more!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Kayla!
Thank you for your insight. This means a lot coming from you, considering you are on the front lines! & I feel the same as you!
I now live in South Carolina, and LOVE IT! it’s right on the border but can’t say enough good things. xo

I love fireworks! However, my dog (Toffee) doesn’t and our neighborhood has been loving setting off backyard fireworks this year. They’ve been daily and all hours ranging from 6am to 2am.
I wasn’t really in the mood to celebrate considering the lack of action by officials concerning police brutality and civil rights.
We did end up doing something similar to what you all did. We and our pup went over to a friends and relaxed outdoors in a socially distanced fashion (very few people, chairs six feet apart but clustered by household, outdoors, ample amounts of hand sanitizer, etc). It was definitely nice to talk with friends while maintaining COVID precautions. However, the best part was that my friend’s neighborhood had a way shorter and less booming fireworks display than our neighborhood. Toffee was able to stay way more relaxed and spent way less time scared than she would have inside at our house. We put her doggy anxiety wrap on and she even happily fell asleep several times. I think getting to see Toffee so relaxed and happy on a day we were so concerned about was the best part. Plus our neighborhood seems to have run out of fireworks so she’s happier at home as well.
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Emma!
My dogs were pretty mad about those fireworks too! Luckily, they were fine once we came inside with them.
Sounds like you had a great 4th, and I’m happy you were able to see friends and have some normalcy in your life. ♥️
Ashton Jury says
Your firework show looked awesome! We didn’t go and watch fireworks anywhere cause it was canceled pretty much everywhere out here but lots of people near us set them off, I always feel bad for all the dogs that get freaked out by it though. Also I have no idea what a scotcharoo is, but it looks devious! I hope you’ll share the recipe!
Taralynn McNitt says
Thanks, Ashton!! I always feel bad for those dogs too! So important people keep them inside.
OHhhhhh you may want to try it out! It’s on the rice Krispies/Kellog website!

Wow, all those complainers giving you a hard time need to stop taking out their frustrations on you! Unbelievable. Yes, we did the same as you and had family over to watch fireworks but we didn’t have the close view you had but it was still a lot of fun. I love Scotcharoos-a coworker of mine makes them so I may be sending her a request soon! I haven’t been doing daily walks since it has been over 110 here in Phoenix! I like high fitness classes and they’ve been live streaming those so that has been helping me get my steps in!! Glad you had a happy 4th!! 🙂

Hey Pretty Lady! Always love your posts and am glad to hear you had a great holiday weekend! I was curious about the adorable teal running shoes you have in one of your pictures on this post. What brand are they and where did you get them?! Do you think they are supportive for running? Super cute!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Sarah! They are my Asics! 😊 I think it’s important to have your shoes fitted for running since everyone lands/runs differently. I was wearing the wrong shoes for so long! These are more flat/less arch which works for me!
