Even though I was sad to leave Nick, Grumples, and Tino, I still couldn’t wait to see my brother and Karlee. I haven’t seen him much since he’s been back in the U.S. and I needed to congratulate him in person on making captain! He is only 26 and climbing up in the world so fast. I’m so proud of him.
After packing my bags, downloading my show on iTunes, and getting my carry on ready, I headed for the airport! I left Charlotte around noon to catch my connecting flight all the way in Detroit.
During the flight, I ended up watching a couple of episode of The Following, season three. I also snacked on my Chia Coconut Bar (favorite flavor) and a veggie-go!
I landed in Detroit about 2:45 and then had to catch my connecting flight at 3:10. Someone pulled the fire alarms in the Detroit Airport and so I had to hear them go off for a while. Everyone around looked concerned because they didn’t know if it was real, fake, or what the heck they should do.
The flight was only supposed to be an hour from Detroit to D.C but there was some kind of storm that set us back 45 minutes. That was fine by me because it was an excuse to catch up on more of The Following.
My brother was flying back to D.C. from Texas, and so our planes landed at the same time. (That wasn’t planned or anything…)
I met him at his baggage claim and then we headed towards the metro to take it to his place. I even have my own Metro card now 🙂
T.C. and Karlee showed me around their new place and I was very impressed. It was so nice and I could stay on their rooftop for days. I know where I’ll be having my cup of coffee every morning. You can see all kinds of neat landmarks from their building.
The graveyard reminded me of Claire Underwood and her run’s during House of Cards. I watch way too much T.V.
After getting the V.I.P tour, we went down to catch the trolly to the waterfront to grab something to eat.
I used to think Washington D.C. was just full of museums, monuments, and buildings…but it’s so much more than that. There is so much here for everyone. The waterfront was gorgeous and King’s Street is my kind of place!
We wanted to eat right on the water at the Waterfront Market and Cafe, but we sat down as soon as their kitchen closed and so we enjoyed some drinks instead. It was a beautiful night to be outside.
I do want to try this place sometime because I heard the food is really good! After our drinks, we walked down Kings Street to find somewhere to eat.
We decided to eat at La Tasca. It looked like a fun place to have dinner. The band was really good, there were tons of people going in and out, (which is a good sign) and it smelled delicious from the outside.
At this point, I was tired I could barely keep my eyes open. I was running on 5 hours of sleep, two glasses of wine, a chia bar, fruit leather, and 2 hard boiled eggs. For dinner, we decided to order all kinds of small plates to share.
I let T.C. do the ordering because he’s a pretty good foodie. He never disappoints.
We started out with Tabla De Salmon, which basically means table of salmon. This may be one of my new favorite dishes. It can easily be made at home and I’m already excited to make it!
It had some kind of ciabatta or baguette bread topped with a lemon cream cheese, smoked salmon, capers, and red onion. Every piece of ingredient worked so well together.
Everything was so fresh. The cream cheese was whipped and fluffy with fresh lemon, none of that lemon extract stuff. If you ever get the chance to eat there, you must order these!
The next plate we ordered was the brocheta de pollo, aka the Chicken Skewer! The skewer was cooked perfectly. The chicken fell right off the stick, and was the farthest thing from being dry. The brocheta de pollo had marinated grilled chicken, onion and bell pepper.
T.C. also ordered the cantelones de la huerta. It’s stuffed pasta rolls, eggplant, peppers, onion, goat cheese, and tomato sauce. It was pretty good; I especially liked the goat cheese.
The Buey a La Plancha (steak) was ordered by accident, and we don’t know how it got there, but I didn’t mind. T.C. only eats seafood, Karlee only eats chicken and seafood, and I don’t have any restrictions, so I ate the steak. It was incredible, cooked to perfected, dressed in the perfect seasoning, and just melted in your mouth. I didn’t mind that it had mushroom puree because it was that good.
The avocado salad was phenomenal. It had shrimp, sliced avocado, mixed greens and an avocado vinaigrette. The dressing was so good. I think they used capers to make it salty.
Little plates like that fill you up fast! I also had like three glasses of water on top of that. The first night in D.C. was so fun and I can’t wait for the rest of the trip! We have so much planned and I love it here already! You guys also gave me a lot of suggestions on what to do/see here and I’m already planning to do some!
T.C. is in the kitchen making Karlee and I egg white omelets, then we are going to go workout and start our day!

So cool to see you here! I live right off of King street and still am in awe of how beautiful it is! O’Connells has a great roof top if you’re looking for something outdoors!

Just FYI, it’s King Street, not King’s Street or Kings Street.

Just out of curiosity, why didn’t you drive from Charlotte to DC? I’ve done the drive before and it just seems so much more direct than the flight you took, lol. I’m from Northern Virginia and loveee King Street. It’s a lot of fun to walk around Georgetown too! Have fun!

I planned on going to D.C. on June 22nd initially, but I totally forgot about a wedding I have to go to that weekend and so I booked my flight last minute. (like 4 days ago) The direct flight to D.C. was $800 and the layover flight was $525 and so I figured I could just give up some hours to save $300. Plus that flight landed the same time my brother’s did. I also didn’t want to drive because I didn’t want to bother with finding somewhere to park or someone hitting my car. Another factor is that I’m in the market to buying a new car and I’m about to sell mine so I didn’t want to put anymore miles on it or have anything happens to it on the drive.

I’ve been following you for awhile, but had no idea that you have an Erin Condren! I would love a post on how you use yours, tips, etc. Love the views!

I love La Tasca! My friend works in Old Town so we end up going there a lot for Happy Hour! King Street really is a cute little corner right outside of the city and not crazy packed like the city is. I’m so glad you enjoyed your trip here! (:
