Now that I’m home, I can continue to blog the rest of my trip. I took a blogging break to spend time with the family and space out from the internet world, minus the occasional instagrams and tweets.
Everyone fell asleep early on Thursday night. We all had dinner and watched football. It was all the traveling that got to us. My parents drove 9 hours from Iowa and I drove back from Detroit.
Sunday morning, I went for a long walk with Grumples while everyone else got ready for the day. I was up early every single day last week. I’m going to try and stick with the same pattern. I like waking up before the sunrise.
After everyone was up, we all hopped in the car and headed to breakfast. Last time I was in Dayton, I went to breakfast with my brother. We went to First Watch. It’s a really healthy breakfast spot that offers a lot of seasonal dishes.
To be honest, it felt really strange being in my brothers home without him. I really miss him. We all Skyped together, but I wish I could just pull him out of the screen. Everything has changed this year. I won’t be going home for Thanksgiving and my parents are going to visit me during Christmas. We just want to celebrate it all different since he’s not here.
Anyways.
This was the first time going to the downtown area of Dayton and it had great beauty. The buildings had a lot of character and cute little shops. I wish I had more time there so I could explore.
If I lived in Dayton, I’d run by the river for sure. Running by the water is so therapeutic.
We finally got to breakfast after running a couple of errands first. First? Coffee!
I was super hungry! I ordered the Veg’d Out omelet with egg whites.
It was filled with cheese and vegetables, and I had them add bacon.
I also ordered a large bowl of fruit to go with.
Their fruit was really fresh. One of my favorite breakfast sides are English muffins with jelly. My mom and dad used to make them with cinnamon and sugar. Oh, so good!
If you’re ever in Dayton, definitely go to First Watch! I’m obsessed with breakfast spots and this one should definitely go on your list.

I live in Dayton and LOVE living here! Next time you are here, go to a spot downtown on Main Street called Delish Cafe. It’s my spot! They have awesome food and it’s a fun and funky interior to add to the experience.

Wow, just look at the folds under that egg white. How did they manage to make it like so?

Your breakfast looks absolutely delicious! Breakfast potatoes and english muffins have to be up there with my favorite breakfast sides as well. Cheese grits are also up there.

you really didn’t miss much downtown. Trust me, it mostly sucks here. There is absolutely nothing besides a few restaurants that are only open Mon throughFri, Riverscape Park, and a small indy theater. Also some bars and a LGBT club. As somebody else said above, D’elish is probably the best one. Overall downtown is a pretty shady place to be. The oregon district is pretty cool though. A lot of hole in the wall bars and a really good beer place. Go there the next time you head downtown. As far as breakfast goes, butter cafe on brown St by UD is the best in the area. They mostly locally source their food and also have some vegan options. Second best is The Cherry House Cafe in Beavercreek. It looks like shit when you walk in, but their food is surprisingly delicious.

Hi Taralynn,
I’ve been keeping up with your blog for about a year and half, and I *just* picked up on the fact that your brother is in the military. As a milspouse and contractor myself, I know what it’s like to be seperated from the people you love for long periods of time, ESPECIALLY over the holidays. I think it is great that you and your family would go to such lengths to support his girlfriend during his absence; your visit must have made her so happy. Hang in there and talk to your brother as much as possible! And packages full of treats never hurt either 😉
Keep up the great work with the blog!
