Good Morning, Everyone! The weather has been killer lately. Over 60-degrees in January? I’ll take it. Today’s post is a fun one because I’m covering some morning routine questions I get asked a lot. Everyone has a morning routine, and it’s always interesting to see how other people spend their morning time. My parents have had the same routine for the past 30 years; my boyfriend has a morning routine, and so does every single one of my friends. Today, I’m sharing seven things I do practically every single morning. If my morning routine is out of whack, so am I.
Wake Up & Make My Bed
Unless I’m waking up to go to the airport, or hit the gym before six (rarely), then I do not need an alarm clock. My body’s internal clock has me wide awake around 6:15 every morning. I love that though because mornings are “my time.” It’s my favorite time of the day. I usually lay in bed for a good fifteen minutes thinking about everything I need to do, sometimes going through notifications on my phone, playing Alice on my phone, or just relaxing. As soon as I roll out of bed, I chug the bottle of water I always put on my nightstand and then make my bed. My bed always has to be made before I start my day! I’ll usually open up the curtains and let all the natural light shine in.
Walk & Feed The Dogs
My dogs also have their morning routine. They are so ready for their morning strolls when I come downstairs. Since it’s colder in the mornings, I bundle up, grab the treats, grab the waste bags, and head out with Leo first. We do our mile walk around the block, and then I come back and do the same route with Grumples. Sometimes I’ll do them together, but it’s less stressful to do one dog at a time, and it’s good to get in some extra steps. When we get back, I put all their leashes away, hang my coat back up, put away my gloves and hat, and feed them. When they hear me getting into their containers, they run over to the living room rug and sit patiently. It’s so cute.
The Face Routine
After walking the dogs, I usually head upstairs to brush my teeth, wash my face, moisturize, and sometimes I’ll do a face mask. I like to do a face mask twice a week. My mask depending on the season, or what my face is up to! If it’s dry, I’ll do a moisturizing mask. If it’s breaking out, I’ll do a vitamin C clay mask. I’m usually listening to music while doing this as well.
It's Tea Time
This whole “tea time” was added to my morning routine three weeks ago, and I don’t ever think I’ll turn away from it. I usually come downstairs with my mask on, start my tea kettle, and slice lemons for the tea. I have been drinking tea with one whole lemon every morning for the past three weeks. Sometime I’ll add a teaspoon of honey to make it less sour. My moods have changed, my skin has cleared up, and it’s great for fighting off those winter colds. The power of the lemon is incredible. I usually stick with the lemon ginger in the mornings. I drink my tea while watching the news, replying back to blog comments, and checking work emails.
Disconnect & Shower
While I have my face mask on, I like to brew a pot of coffee before heading upstairs to shower it all off. When I get out of the shower, I moisturize, and play one of my favorite apps, and have coffee upstairs. This is my time where I just disconnect for a while before starting my emails and blog comments.
Lately, I’ve been playing Alice! As soon as I started playing, I was hooked. I played the entire car ride to and from Charleston, and haven’t stopped since. As soon as I hear the game’s music, I get sucked right in. You have to make each move count, and it’s an ideal game to get your mind going in the morning. The colors in the game and the characters are so beautifully and designed with familiar characters from the magical world of Alice In Wonderland. The game has March Hare, the Hatter, the White Queen, the Cheshire Cat and more! 🙂
I try to complete a level each morning while drinking my coffee. It’s one of my favorite ways to disconnect from everything. Every time you reach different levels, you collect prizes and reveal more characters. I just connected my game account with Facebook because, for the entire month of January, they’re giving away extra balloons when you link up! If you played the game, you’d understand why you’d want all the balloons! I used up like 50 balloons to get through the first level. It was almost like math. I also play Alice to shut my mind off before bed and to keep me entertained while stretching after a workout.
If you’d like to try Alice, you can download the game for FREE by using this link for the Apple and this link for the Android!
The Clean Routine
After my half hour of disconnecting, I usually head downstairs to straighten up. I’ll make sure all the dishes are in the dishwasher or unloaded, the countertops are clean, the trash is taken out, the curtains and blinds are all open, the blankets are folded, the pillows are straight, and sometimes I’ll vacuum or fold laundry. I hate starting my day when things are out of place.
Breakfast And Blogging
As soon as everything is done, I start my work routine with a delicious breakfast! I’ll usually make eggs, a smoothie, or a bowl of oats. I’ll sit down with my breakfast and start working on a new blog. I do all of my writing in the morning, and photo editing at night. I make sure to keep my planner and schedule up to date. I like to print out notes and keep them in folders, so I do not miss a deadline. Blogging is fun and very rewarding, but it takes a lot of organizing and self-discipline.
And that is my morning routine! 🙂 All of this happens before 10 am!
I’d LOVE to hear all about your morning routines! Even if it’s jumping out of bed and going!
WHAT DOES YOUR MORNING ROUTINE LOOK LIKE?
This blog post was sponsored by Alice and ALL opinions are my own.
Carrie this fit chick says
My morning looks similar, however I’m super rushed! Wish I had more time to do the things you do! I wake up early, wash my face, brush my teeth, go workout, then get ready and make breakfast. I always read blogs and articles during breakfast!
Taralynn McNitt says
Sounds like you have a pretty good morning routine though! 😀
Anonymous says
you never mention being grateful for being able to have such a routine! I have to get up at 5:00 to workout, rush to get ready and sit in traffic for 2 hours. I wish I had 2 hours to get myself together.
Taralynn McNitt says
I never once complained about my morning routine. Because I work at home, I’m fortunate enough to give myself those hours. I work long and hard just like the next person. There are many perks to my job. If you do not like your morning routine, maybe possibly look into a career shift or find something that makes you happy? Life is too short and the possibilities are endless.
Anonymous says
The original commenter wasn’t saying you complained, but someone who has the time to wake up, take dogs on walks, do a face mask, play some stupid app, etc, would normally mention that they are lucky to have a career that they love AND that supports their preferred morning routine. As a physician, I’m up at 5am every day and out the door by 6. Do I love they I don’t have time to myself in the morning? No. But I make it work and I would never give up my career for a better morning routine. Grow up and respond to people with some empathy.
Taralynn McNitt says
It seems like you have a job that you love! Good for you 🙂
I thought it would be fun to share my morning routine. It’s not going to be the same as anyone else’s. I love my morning routine, and I created this life for myself. I don’t feel bad for enjoying my life or enjoying the way I spend my days. All I was trying to say was that if someone wishes they could have more time for themselves in the morning, then maybe a career change or find a way to do it. That was me showing empathy. Life is too short to be unhappy. Meant no harm by my comment.

thank you. she STILL doesn’t get it. I won’t be reading anymore.

I’m sorry that my morning routine offended you. Best wishes! xo

I love that you have such a consistent morning routine, Taralynn! ❤️❤️ Me, I’m always in a mess myself. I wake up at the last possible minute, get dressed and rush out to work. It’s something I’m working to change this year! 🙂

I wish I could wake up and go! I ALWAYS have to have my morning time. I was like that in high school too!

Good morning!! Can I start by saying I’m so jealous of your routine! 🙈 I have two kids (4 & 7mo) so my mornings are a little out of whack. Before kids, I was just like you. Make my bed, drink my coffee, walk the dogs, etc… now, I’m lucky to sleep til 6:30. On mornings I have to take my daughter to school, I’m up about 5 or 6ish, try and have my coffee while it’s still hot before my baby wakes. Usually get my daughter up at 7, breakfast, clothes, out the door at 8:30 sharp. Days with no school, first the coffee then the things (love coffee memes). I try to keep the household clean and under control but one thing I have to have done every evening before bed is to have a clean kitchen. Regardless of what goes on during the day or how late it gets, the kitchen needs to be clean. Hate waking up to a dirty kitchen. Not exactly the response you were looking for but it’s my life and I wouldn’t change it for the world. Keep up the awesome blogging and I think I’ll take that tip of keeping a glass of water next to the bed. I need to drink more water (and tea). Have an awesome day!!
-Barbara
P.S. – Where did you get those mirrors from next to your tv??
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Barbara!
I’m sure your mornings are pretty exciting with kids lol You sound like a pretty awesome mom! I know one day I’ll have a WAY different morning routine 😉 I’m enjoying it as long as I can! I love hearing about your morning routine! Power to you! xo xo
I actually bought them at a little boutique in Waxhaw, but they closed 🙁
Debbie Fick says
Do you put anything besides lemon in your tea? I love tea but started a whole 30 Jan First so I can’t have honey or sugar. I haven’t been making tea the last week because I don’t like the taste without my Splenda, honey and cream but I really miss it.
Taralynn McNitt says
Maybe just try a different brand of tea! Also, the more you drink it, the more you’ll teach those tastebuds to enjoy it without sugar! I used to add sweetener and cream to my coffee, now I LOVE nothing in my coffee!:) You get used to it!
Chandler says
Good morning, Taralynn! My morning routine is super boring compared to yours! I wake up at 5 AM everyday and immediately start getting ready for work (shower, skincare, hair, makeup, get dressed, etc.). Then I head downstairs and take my lunch and snacks out of the fridge and sometimes make a protein shake for breakfast. If I don’t do a protein shake, then I have fruit and nuts. Then it’s off to work! My commute is usually about 40 min. My husband and I work on the same street so we can carpool most days which is wonderful and makes the drive a lot faster. Once I’m at work, I put all my food in the fridge, fill my water bottle, and then head up to my office where I usually stay until 8 AM or so, and then I head down around then for my coffee! I don’t usually do breakfast until about 9 AM, sometimes even 9:30 or 10. I just listen to my body! Now off to check out Alice… 🙂 Happy weekend!
Taralynn McNitt says
Sounds like a very structured morning routine!
Happy weekend!! xo

Oh my gosh i LOVE your phone wallpaper! Did you pay for it? I have an obsession for anything Alice in Wonderland.
My morning usually goes something like exercise, class, work, yoga, meditate, sleep. Maybe I should do a detailed post on that?
In the winter on sundays I do this:

Yes! I got it at Target. I bought a couple different colors.
Sounds like you have a great morning routine!

I think what you’re referring to as the wallpaper is just the game screen? 🙂
Lincoln says
I know you have to make money off of this blog and I’m sure this sponsorship helps, but don’t you feel a sense of responsibility when you say you are promoting a healthy lifestyle? You are calling being on your phone playing an app “disconnecting” when it is quite literally the opposite. Being on your phone or in front of a screen before bed and first thing in the morning is a terrible and dangerous habit for someone to add to their ‘routine’. I would highly encourage you or your readers to do an ounce of research on this subject before they start incorporating a negative habit into their lives. People clearly envy your lifestyle and listen to you on here, I hope in the future you’ll try to be more responsible with what you post in situations like this and be more selective of your sponsorship. I’m sure this comment won’t make it past moderation, but hopefully you take it into consideration.
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Lincoln.
I don’t think disconnecting is a bad thing. I never claimed it to be “healthy” to play a game on your phone. I agree that there are so many other ways to disconnect that are better for the brain, but getting on my phone and diving into a game makes me disconnect from thinking about social media or other things I have going on. I’m not telling anyone to get on their phone to disconnect. This is just what I choose to do. People have minds of their own and I feel confident enough in my readers that they’ll make the best decisions for themselves. xo I think it’s healthy to have a balance. You can’t live a perfectly healthy life, no one does.
Lincoln says
Thanks for the response – I find it refreshingly professional when bloggers can publish comments that aren’t always just praiseworthy. For the record – you’re right that disconnecting is a great thing! The way it was used in this post is what throws me off here – disconnecting means breaking the connection and it is typically used to describe removing yourself from technology (phone/TV/computer)etc. Maybe you mean more along the lines of like “turning your brain off” for a while? Which is also a totally necessary thing to do sometimes whether that’s through playing an app or reading a book or getting out and exercising etc. (to each their own). I understand that you have a responsibility to plug this app for your sponsors, I was just a little concerned that it was being framed as something to do before bed/first thing in the morning inside a post that is full of other great, healthy and real habits you have like walking the dogs, slowing down with some tea and gearing up for your day. Thanks again for posting my responses and acknowledging your readers – good and bad 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
I understand what you mean by disconnecting from technology, and I most certainly do that. I was referring to disconnecting to social media and thinking about everything I have to do or thinking about things that stress me out. Because I’m a high anxiety person, my mind gets me in trouble sometimes, and I love NOT thinking. I love disconnecting from technology too and I usually do that while I’m at the gym, in yoga, or out on my walks. I hardly ever take my cell phone on my walks or have it on. I find myself sometimes laying in bed and cannot fall asleep because my mind is just NONSTOP, but as soon as I start playing a game, I get sleepy because my mind starts to calm down. It just works for me. I’m sure it’s not healthy, but it works.
Caitlin says
I think most people have the ability to use contextual clues to figure out what she meant by “disconnecting.” I definitely don’t agree that this term only refers to disconnecting from technology, either. Most people I know use phone games to “disconnect” their brain from constantly thinking about work.
Anne says
I was thinking the same thing. Disconnecting should not be described as using technology, it’s quite the opposite. I don’t touch my phone until I’m ready to walk out the door…my routine involves meditation each morning and I think the world would be a better place if everyone tried that instead of letting their phones turn them into zombies!!
Taralynn McNitt says
Thanks for your opinion. I’ll keep that in mind. Some people (like myself) just have a hard time shutting things off and playing games works for me. I never once said it was “healthy.” Meditating doesn’t work for me. I find myself sitting there thinking about all the things that I didn’t want to think about. Gotta do you.
Angelina says
Omg, I WISH I had a website so I could comment without being an anonymous grey blob.
I just started using the app Fabulous to develop a new routine, and they started me off with a new morning routine!
For 15 days now I’ve been waking up at 5:30, drinking water right away, walking my dog around the block, feeding her, getting dressed for work/doing hair/makeup/teeth, and finally making my coffee and eating a banana and hard boiled egg for breakfast. 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
That is awesome, I’ll have to check it out.
Sounds like you have a great morning routine, especially if it’s filled with dog walks and coffee!
Emily says
Do your dogs sleep in kennels at night? My dog does so this is not a judgmental question, more just curious! He’s only 1 so probably has awhile longer before he’s allowed to be wherever he wants at night!
Taralynn McNitt says
They don’t sleep in kennels. They used to sleep with me upstairs, but I’ve been keeping them downstairs at night. This helps with any separation anxiety, and I find that I sleep better when Leo isn’t moving around or jumping on and off the bed at night. We let Leo start sleeping on his own once he was potty trained around 6 months.
Emily says
And he doesn’t get into anything at night? Haha I just saw your stories where he was playing with a lime. My dog did that with an avocado and I thought it was his kong all day haha
Taralynn McNitt says
Nope! He sleeps through the night:) It’s usually during the day when he tries to get attention and do things he shouldn’t! I do make sure all the bathroom doors are closed just in case. lol he was so confused with the lime! hahaha But he was gentle with it which was cute! He knew it wasn’t a toy.
Jen says
I have been trying to improve my morning routine since the new year. Waking up early and having time to my self usually always including some tea on the couch with either reading, The Today Show, or some light stretching. I have noticed I feel so much better and not rushed and it is nice to have a few moments to myself before having a stressful day. Thanks for sharing your routine! xo
Taralynn McNitt says
Yes! A relaxing morning (even if you have to wake up hours before work) is a great way to start the day.
Veronica says
So jealous, I love your morning routine! I love that you are able to accomplish so much before 10am, definitely something I need to work on! I did have a question about how you use the lemon, 🍋 do you cut up the whole lemon and let it sit with the tea? You are always so motivating! Thank you.
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Veronica!
Thanks so much! 😀
I just slice it in half and squeeze the juice and gut out the pulp into the tea! I drink the pulp too lol
Catherine says
Your morning routine sounds AMAZING! I’ve never really been a morning person and it’s a struggle to wake up in the morning so mine look way different lol I wake up (hopefully) by 7:30am..shower, get dressed, take my thyroid meds, and i’m out the door to be at work by 830am. I have to take my meds on an empty stomach and then I can’t eat/drink anything for one hour after. I wish i could chug a bottle of water right when I wake up to get my day started right…maybe one day.. Love reading your blogs and following you on ig/snapchat !!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Catherine!
Thank you for the kind words!
I’ve heard about that with the thyroid meds! I’m sure it’s hard to wait! Sometimes I wake up SO HUNGRY! But I’ve read that’s a sign that your metabolism is speeding up, so maybe it’s a good thing? 🙂 x o

Hi Taralynn,
I have been reading your blog for a while and I look forward to having the time to read it every week. My morning routine changes throughout the week, but it typically involves my dogs, picking up the house, making breakfast (and lunch if I’m going to work) and drinking tea (since I am not a coffee drinker). The only habit I am trying to break on my days off is turning Netflix on!
I also wanted to comment on some of the angry and judgmental comments coming from readers. I really appreciate that you follow through and post/respond to harsh comments like these. That takes a lot of composure and strength. I also want to acknowledge that I consistently read about how grateful you are for your life, friends and family. This blog often reminds me to reflect on all of the wonderful things in my life. Thank you for your constant positivity; I often leave your blog feeling inspired and motivated to make changes that fit my lifestyle and career. Keep doing what you’re doing! I look forward to seeing what this year brings to your blog.
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Ashley!
Your morning routine sounds wonderful! Maybe instead of diving into Netflix, start listening to music? I do that sometimes when I need a break from the news in the background.
I appreciate your kind words. I really do! I love writing blogs that are positive and to remind people to slow down and enjoy the small things in life. I want people to go after happiness and never settle for something that makes them happy. I really loved reading your comment! Reminds me WHY I love to blog.
xo xo xo
Melissa says
Hi Tara,
Instead of me responding to those judging you and leaving negative comments for no good reason, I would like to commend you for sharing parts of your life with us everyday! You are very real and down to earth. That’s why people relate to you so well. I enjoy reading every article you write. I really enjoyed your Tennessee blog. My hubby and I are going there soon.
You are like a book I enjoy reading and I cannot wait to see what the next blog brings whether it is a beautiful walk to a fancy coffee shop, an interesting recipe, or cute pictures of the pups creeping in. Thank you for sharing your not perfect life with us…lol! I disconnect at night like you do in the mornings.
My mornings are filled with feeding and letting my boxer/lab mixes out to run & potty, getting us breakfast, and heading off to my job as a nurse.
Keep up being you girl and do your “thang” because you are awesome! Don’t let anyone dull your sparkle.
For those who are negative to you- you don’t owe them an explanation. They should read elsewhere if they don’t appreciate your blog.
Hope you have a great weekend!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Melissa!
I appreciate your kind words. Sometimes you’re in a “no-win” situation, but I can’t really defend the way I live my life if I’m happy with it. So, it’s totally OK! Not everyone has to like me 🙂 It would be exhausting if I had to please everyone. And THANK YOU for the kind words!!
You are going to LOVE Tennessee! Where are you going in Tennessee?
Your dogs sound adorable!:) & being a nurse is so awesome. I can’t even look at blood without passing out, so THANK YOU for doing what most of us cannot.
Have a great weekend! Thank you for lifting others up!

Zoe says
My morning routine is not as great as it could be due to my inability to focus and/or wake up. lol Exercise is usually what gets dropped.
My alarm goes off at 5:05 and I get up and get myself at least somewhat ready. From 5:15 – 5:45 I do my Bible reading on YouVersion, Read Scripture, or a Devo book, or just reading.
From 5:45 -6:15 I want to exercise, but I have been having a super hard time actually waking up on time and also being distracted by other things. Ideally it would be a combination of body weight stuff and stretching. Anything I can do on the floor of my bedroom.
And then 6:15-6:30 I have “free time” to do whatever I want. I’ve been learning Spanish and Dutch on Duolingo…but this time can be anything.
At 6:30 I get my kids up and started and then go make breakfast. Usually eggs and ham with some fruit. Sometimes a smoothie.
Take my 5yo to preschool.
Come home and either clean, play with the kids, or do chores…depending on the day. But always..laundry! Haha.
Every Tuesday morning I go grocery shopping with my girls while my 5yo is at school.
Then I pick him up at 11.
Before 10am is almost always the most productive part of my day.
I don’t set alarms on Saturday though. That’s my “day off”. 😉
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Zoe!
So good that you read the scripture in the morning. I need to start doing that! Any advice would be appreciated. I don’t even know where to begin anymore!
I also do the spanish on Duolingo!!
Sounds like you have a very busy, productive, and fulfilling morning!!
Zoe says
I would suggest setting aside 10- 15 minutes to start.
The Read Scripture App is awesome, and it has a video to go with it, but it would take more than 15 minutes to do all of it.
You could start with reading through the Proverbs. One chapter a day for a month.
Or check out the Youversion devotions and work your way through one of them. You can set reminders to read them at a certain time.
Something is always better than nothing!
Isn’t Duolingo awesome! I love that I don’t have to pay for a college class just to learn a different language!
Taralynn McNitt says
Thanks so much, Zoe! Very helpful 🙂
amanda june says
hey tara there’s a great app i recently saw recommended and downloaded called “readscripture.” it includes a reading plan for each day (and the reading is included in the app in case you want to do it on the go!) but also short video introductions for how each section fits into the overall big picture of redemption. highly recommend it! 🙂 you can find out more at readscripture.org
i used to dread mornings and wake up at the last possible minute depending on when i had to be somewhere, but in the last few years i’ve settled into a much more regular routine of getting to sleep earlier every night, which allows for earlier mornings. i love that i can get so much done in the morning — coffee, breakfast, scripture/devotional and prayer time, some leisurely scrolling through blogs/news, showering and getting ready, and starting on some emails and work, all before i have to “be” somewhere. 🙂 cheers to the early morning!

I love these types of posts! Thanks for sharing! 🙂

Man, I’d love your morning routine. I wake up at 5:20 every morning, make my bed, get straight in the shower. After getting dressed, putting on makeup and packing my lunch and sometimes breakfast for the day; i’m out the door driving to work by 6:25. I start work at 7am, so when i get to work, i usually go make myself a cup of tea and read emails. Then it’s straight to work. Usually by 10am, i’ve been through two meetings, caught up with half the office and done a couple of items on my to do list.
Here’s thing, i’ve done this morning routine for the past 6 years and if one step is out of place, i’m completely lost and can’t function. it’s hysterical sometimes.
Taralynn McNitt says
Lol I totally feel ya!! My parents were like that. If my mom had a different routine in the morning, she was in a bad mood and we always knew it! hahaha Sounds like you have a very structured and productive morning! xo
Rachel says
Oh man, I would be a much happier person if I could convince myself to tidy up my apartment daily. Just thinking about the wreck going on in my closet right now gives me anxiety. What an unexpected but great thing to have in your morning routine!
Taralynn McNitt says
Just dedicate ONE day to that closet! I usually do like a weekend when my closet needs a rehab, and I’m human so it does happen! Then make it a promise to yourself to always keep up on the laundry and putting clothes away! 😀 My mom always says “A happy house is a clean house”
Becky says
I wish that I had the time and lifestyle to allow for this type of long and leisurely morning routine. Your mornings sound calming, relaxing and productive- mine are pretty much the exact opposite of that! My morning routine consists of running around trying to do the bare minimum I need to get ready for work and get out the door. I wish I had time to straighten up because the house is always a mess when I get home from work from scrambling to get ready that morning. I can’t even imagine what having time to sip tea and coffee, put on a face mask and play games on my phone in the morning must be like.
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Becky!
Maybe you can do your housekeeping on the weekends and force yourself to wake up an hour earlier to give you a little bit more time to slow down? Since Kyle has a really crazy and busy schedule, he meal prep on the weekends to save time on all his meals throughout the week. That could also be something you could do to give you a little more time?
Taralynn
Amanda McCaffrey says
I work shift work so unfortunately, I rarely have a routine. But my absolute favorite is when I work nights. I sleep in as late as I want/ as long as I can. When I get home from work the night before I tidy up my kitchen and living room and set up my coffee pot. That way as soon as I wake up I can hit the start button and make my way to the living room with my coffee and snuggle up with a warm blanket and turn on something like Friends or Gilmore Girls and get caught up on Instagram and Facebook.
And it’s kind of strange but my afternoon ritual before a night shift is a relaxing bubble bath after a big breakfast/lunch. Most people have them after a long, hard day but I love one before I head off to my shift to kind of center and clear my head before a hectic night!
Taralynn McNitt says
I love that you take the time to self-care before going to work! I really love your positive attitude because I’m sure working the nightshift is hard!
Laura says
I’m just now getting back into my routine now that my winter break (I’m a teacher) is over – I took the two weeks off to just relax and while it was great, I am so ready to be back to my norm. I usually get up around 4-4:30, drink some water, brush my teeth, and drink some pre-workout before doing a workout at home. Then it’s shower time, followed by breakfast, and I usually read a little of whatever book I’m currently reading before its off to work around 7.
It was SUPER hard to get used to getting up at 4AM, but now if I don’t do it I feel so rushed and stressed. I love having everything done before I even get to work, and it’s a great excuse to go to bed early haha
Taralynn McNitt says
That is an awesome and structured routine!!
I’m sure it’s hard getting up that early for sure!! But if I had to be somewhere at 7, I’d have to do that as well because I hate being rushed. I also like going to bed early lol
xo xo
Kelsey Weissner says
I have a current morning routine, and then I have a morning routine I want to transition to! I wake up and drink a glass of water/lemon water, spend time with my cat, and throw a pot of coffee on before getting in the shower. I give myself just enough time to do everything, but it all always feels so rushed during the week when I have to be at work at 9am. Weekend mornings are much more relaxed and I still wake up early (7-8ish).
As for what I want my morning routines to be.. I plan on incorporating some physical activity or energizing yoga. I want to make and eat breakfast at home instead of throwing together a quick smoothie or peanut butter toast to eat while I’m driving to work. I really want to incorporate The Miracle Morning in to my routine too! Have you heard of it? It’s a book you can download from Amazon and it’s so incredibly inspiring. I want to make some big changes in my life and I really feel like TMM will be a great foundation to do so 🙂
Have a great weekend! We are in the 60s too here in Baltimore today, but tomorrow it’s back down to the low 30s, ugh!
xo Kelsey
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Kelsey!
I’m so shocked at how many people drink lemon water in the morning. Was I living under a rock?!?!? I’m loving the lemon life haha Sounds like you have your body on an alarm clock as well.
I haven’t heard of that but I’ll definitely look into it!!
xo xo xox Same weather here!! We had 65 and rain all day, but tomorrow is back to 40’s.
Jenni says
I wake at 5 am without alarm clock also. Make my bed. Have lemon water, hot or cold. Unload the dryer, fold and put away. Unload the dishwasher. Meditate while the coffee is brewing. Watch the weather/news while drinking coffee along with making breakfast for my husband and I before he heads out the door for work. Then I attack the daily schedule for the day.
Taralynn McNitt says
I love your morning routine! Sounds a lot like mine!! How long have you been doing the lemon water thing? I’ve been drinking lemon tea nonstop and I feel like it’s made a world of difference!
G. says
I love your morning routine. I don’t know how you work from home. I tried that for a year and you’re right about self-discipline, which I had zero of. I had a hard time focussing! Would love to see a post on how you stay focussed while working at home.
Taralynn McNitt says
That’s a great idea, G.! It is hard though. I’ll admit it!!!
Amber O. says
Thanks for sharing! It’s fun to see how other people spend their morning. (Sorry some can be so judgemental!) I just started waking up earlier to have more time for myself and this post was inspiring 🙂 definitely want to try out a facemask in the morning instead of at night! If you’re a morning person than you may as well take advantage of that time!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Amber!
It’s OK! I’m used to it and it’s what I have to expect as a blogger since I put myself out there. It really doesn’t affect me 😉 I love doing face masks on bachelor Monday, but other than that…morning it is!
xo xo
Amber O. says
You’re so brave! Also can’t believe you have to pay so much for your own insurance, but loved reading that comment, you go girl! 🤗
Taralynn McNitt says
Insurance is so expensive! That is one downfall of being self-employed lol But, I’d rather pay a ton and be covered!
Hannah says
Some of the people that comment on your blog are ridiculous. I loved this post!
Taralynn McNitt says
lol thanks, Hannah!
Carlee says
Gosh, my routine seems very unproductive now.
Wake up at 5:11 (weird, but with the one snooze I’m up at 5:20!)
Keurig gets turned on and ready while I wash face, brush teeth, and get dressed for the gym.
Gym 5:50-7:00
Shower and at work by 7:40!
I enjoy my weekend morning SO MUCH MORE! I love laying in bed after I wake up and checking my phone or just thinking! I also have a lot more time and will make the bed, start laundry/dishes before heading to the gym. Week days are just quick and not enjoyable so I really try to make the most of Saturday and Sunday mornings!
Taralynn McNitt says
Your mornings aren’t unproductive at all!! When I was working from 7 am to 7 pm in Chicago, my weekends were sacred to me, so I know how that feels! Makes us appreciate those moments even more!
Matty says
I have been waiting for a post like this for a long time! I get up at 5 to have coffee before going to the gym:) I usually come home, shower, and head to work around ten 🙂 I work at a coffee shop and absolutely love it. I left my corporate job after getting married because it was making me miserable. Thank you for the constant inspiration.
Taralynn McNitt says
Coffee shop is my dream job:) I think it’s so cool and incredibly brave that you did that! You should let me know what coffee shop you’re working at so I can try it out sometime!
Lauren says
You should work part-time in a coffee shop, if that’s your dream job.
Taralynn McNitt says
Maybe later in life.
Lauren says
Why later in life? You’re a young 20-something who enjoys coffee and you have a flexible schedule to work part-time. If it’s really your dream job why not go out and get it?
Taralynn McNitt says
I don’t have the time to do it. Even though my job is flexible, it’s still time-consuming. I work 12-16 hours a day and do not have time. I think working at a coffee shop would be amazing, but what I’m doing right now is something I love just as much. I think working at a coffee shop later in life would be fun.

You have no adult responsibilities, no need to wake up early or have a “routine”, and apparently no grasp on reality.
Taralynn McNitt says
I have just as many adult responsibilities as the next 26 year old. I own a home, which means I have to pay my mortgage. Having a home also means I pay electricity, water, property taxes, hoa fees, home insurance, and other household needs. I own a car, which means I have to pay for gas, my payments, car tax, and insurance. I am self-employed, which means I have to pay over $450 a month for health insurance. I have a cell phone, dogs with vet bills, groceries, internet, cable, and no roommate, which means I have to pay all of these expenses by my self. How does an adult with no responsibilities afford to live? I don’t think you have a grasp on my life. I choose to share fun and positive posts, but you choose to be negative and mean to people you do not know. You can “think” what you want about me if it makes you happier, or gets you through your day. I’m perfectly content with how my life is going! Sorry you feel the need to be mean to others.
Patricia L says
People who thing blogging isn’t a real job should try it! I had a blog for about a year and I have to give it up because it took up so much of my time it didn’t work with a one year old. I found myself asking for just a few more minutes to finish something up instead of being with him so I quit it. Blogging is long hours, hard, and on top of that have to listen to everyone else tell you how you’re doing it wrong (even though you’re very successful). I think you are amazing and do a wonderful job on your blog! You are also awesome at dealing with negative commenters. I wish when I was 26 I had my life together as much as you do!! Heck I know 40 year olds who aren’t as adult as you! 😁
Taralynn McNitt says
Wow, thank you, Patricia!!!!!
Hannah A says
If you’re going to leave a comment that is clearly meant to be insulting and generally just rude, you could at least leave your name.. But, I suppose that’s how online bullying usually works; tough talk behind a screen when you can be totally anonymous. If it bothers you so much to read a blog like this, I’m not sure why you bothered to read it at all.
On a totally serious note: I hope that if you are leaving a comment like this because you feel stuck in a rut with your life, that you find your way out of it soon! Everyone deserves to be happy, and I hope that you find out what that is for yourself.
Anonymous says
You have no name.

Thanks for always being super honest and open with us! Ignore those rude comments! Mine morning routine varies day to day. I usually get up between 5:30-6 for a workout (it depends on the day what I’m a doing which makes it fun!), workout from 6ish till 7 or 7:30ish. Then I get ready and split the lunch packing/coffee making with my husband. Once we’re ready, we’re off to work! Weekends are my favorite and we get to get up when we want, workout, then make breakfast together while watching our shows :] Keep up the wonderful posts! xox
Taralynn McNitt says
Thanks, Melissa!
Good for you for getting up to workout! I’m just a zombie/non-morning active person! I try lol
What shows have you been watching lately!?! We need a new weekend one!

I work from home doing taxes and my morning routine looks about the same! I get a lot of work done, but also enjoy the time to myself.
Taralynn McNitt says
Glad you get to enjoy that time! 😀

Those that are leaving rude comments are likely jealous of your lifestyle.
Taralynn McNitt says
Everyone has a different lifestyle. I also have hard times, long hours, and things I hate doing. We all do! It’s life. There’s no need to be jealous of anyone else. We should all just start focussing on our lives and what makes us happy. If we dwell on the lives of others, we’ll never be happy!
Susie @ Mile High Dreamers says
It’s so funny because I NEVER made my bed as a teen/young adult, but now that I’m a little older, I LOVE making my bed in the morning haha. It makes me feel like I’ve got it together!
My morning routine is usually waking up at 5am thanks to my kitty meowing until I feed her. Then laying back in bed and playing the ‘how many times can I press snooze before I’m super rushed?’ game. Then I jump out of bed, do my make up, make breakfast and lunch for the day (and usually lunch for Ben, cuz I love him), drink lemon water with apple cider vinegar, get all my teacher stuff together, get dressed (apparently in the same thing every day since a student commented yesterday that I ‘wear the same thing all the time’ hahaha), and try to get out the door by 7!
I wish I was a morning person like Ben, who gets up at 4:30 to workout every morning (NOPE), but I still manage to pull it together on a semi regular basis :).
Taralynn McNitt says
Hahaha I HATED making my bed as a teen, but my parents were both military and it didn’t fly…I can’t go about my day now if my bed is unmade hahaha. I finally understand why my parents were the way they were!
Awwww I miss having a cat. If Grumples and Leo got along with cats, I’d have one!!! Lol it’s so funny how kids notice little things. I ALWAYS noticed my teachers outfits when I was a kid.
Dang! Ben is on top of his morning routine! 4:30 to workout? DANG!! You go, Ben!!
Hannah A says
Thanks for sharing, Tara! I think it would be WONDERFUL to be able to take my time in the mornings and be able to do all the things you are able to! The downsides to my job are that the hours are SO not compatible with anyone else’s, and when I work 12 hour shifts, I feel like I have no time at home to get a single thing done!
When I can motivate myself to get out of bed early enough, I do my workout in the morning after I let my pup Rufus outside to do his business (we do go for walks in the warmer months, but when it’s negative degrees outside, his little feet freeze!), and then I make coffee to take back upstairs with me for when I take a shower/get out of the shower! On a work day, I will go back downstairs and prep my food for the day, and on an off day, I usually head over to my fiance’s house, because that’s usually about the time he gets off work! 🙂
P.S: I’m totally proud of the fact that you have stuck to something you believe in for so long, make a living doing it, and have made such huge improvements in your life and continue to do so. You’re a wonderful person! Some people that dislike their lives just need to be able to find the courage to make the changes they want to see. Don’t let them get you down!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Hannah!
First off, congrats on getting engaged. I was so excited when I saw that on my feed!! You are one of the sweetest and kindest souls and you deserve every bit of happiness that comes your way. I hope you make it down to the Carolinas!
12 Hour shifts have to be hard! Hopefully you get to enjoy all the time to yourself on the weekends.
It sounds like you have a great morning routine! 😀 I know it’s cold in Iowa right now, so hang in there!!
Thank you for the kind words, Hannah! Means so much 🙂 And thank you for always being a light and a breath of fresh air! I’m coming back to Iowa this summer, so lets please get together for coffee! xo xo xo xo
Hannah A says
Coffee date = absolutely! The Brew in Pella is ah-mazing, and they have a TON of drink options you may not normally find in a small town’s coffee shop (and I don’t mean the mega-store-throw-a-powder-mix-in-a-mug kind. Fresh and delicious!)
I still SO want to come out that direction, but now with a wedding fast approaching (April 7th! Sounds super soon, and it really is, but we have had plenty of time to plan everything that we need/want, and that time of the year was just PERFECT for us and for our families!) our trip may have to take a bump to next summer! I actually mentioned to Matt that we had the opportunity to go skydiving with a company that you guys have used on a couple occasions and that you highly recommended it, and he was SUPER excited! I can’t wait until we can come! 🙂
Yes, it’s still FREEZING here. The “feels like” temp today was -23 and made my grocery trip almost miserable! Yuck!
I hope the weather is treating you much better there!
Rebecca says
I love these type of posts! 😊
I work swing shift most days (unless I get called in early) which is nice because I have time to relax and spend time with my husband and fur babies.
I usually wake up, drink some warm lemon water, and head to my garage to workout or run around the neighborhood. Then, I feed the fur babies, have the coffee start brewing, and take a quick shower. Then I let my fur babies out in the back yard (they’re cats but act like dogs and want outside time every morning) and watch them while I have my morning coffee. I usually don’t have breakfast but have been trying to have homemade smoothies every morning. Then I usually start on the dishes and laundry and spend time with my husband before heading off to work.
On mornings that I have to head into work early it’s much more rushed. I’ll brew some coffee, head in the shower, and if I have a little bit of time I’ll let the fur babies out for 5 to 10 minutes before bringing them inside, giving them breakfast, and heading to work.
Taralynn McNitt says
Thanks, Rebecca!!
So great that you can spend that time with the ones you love! I love weekends because I get to spend my mornings with Kyle and the dogs!
I love your morning routine! 🙂 Sounds productive and relaxing.

I love your morning routine, Taralynn! People’s daily routines are SO fascinating to me. Would love to see follow up posts on your evening/weekend routines if you have them! 🙂
On weekdays, I’m usually up between 6:40ish and 7. My morning routine used to start with a big cup of coffee first thing, but I’ve had to cut back recently because of how my body metabolizes caffeine and how jittery it can make me. My new routine is to start first thing with a healthy breakfast and a full glass of water, plus my vitamins. It takes maybe 20ish minutes to make and eat breakfast, and THEN I can enjoy my one cup of coffee. Usually while drinking my coffee I read that day’s passage from my One Year Bible (I have this one and highly recommend it if you’re looking for an easy, non-intimidating way to get into reading the Bible regularly! http://amzn.to/2myZKdy) and pray afterward. If it’s a weekday, I check in on my hubby after that to make sure he’s up and offer to make him a quick breakfast if I have time. If it’s a day I’m working, I get dressed, do hair/makeup, and head out the door by about 8:30. If not, I enjoy taking more time getting ready and looking over my different “to do” lists for that week (I keep one page with categorized lists for different areas of life like home, personal, work, side business, etc.) and prioritize what all I want to get done that day. Mornings are my favorite time of the day too! There’s just something about a fresh morning and a whole day of possibilities ahead of you! 🙂
Oh and PS, I’ve been trying to incorporate lemon water into my days too to help replace my old coffee habit – it’s encouraging to know it’s been such a game changer for you! I was just squeezing about a half lemon into my cup each time, but I’m going to try adding whole ones and see how it goes. Thanks for the tip! xo
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Traci!
I may have to do a follow-up post! Or an entire day in the life vlog! 😀
I, too, had to cut back on coffee! I do one cup in the morning and that is it! 🙂 I do feel MUCH better! Thank you for sending that link to me! 🙂 Sounds like you get so much done in the morning! You go girl!
I started doing half and now I’m doing a whole! Do you just do hot water? or do you add tea too?
xo
Traci says
Yes, a day in the life vlog would be fun – I would definitely watch! 🙂 I just do a mug of hot water with my lemon usually. We have a Keurig so I just run a cup of water out of that and squeeze the lemon in with it. Question – how do you gut the lemon to get all the pulp in there? I’ve tried digging it out with a spoon but found it was really hard and didn’t work well. Would love to know if you have a special tool or technique you use. Thanks! 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi Traci!
Sometimes I scoop as much out as I can with a spoon, but I found it to be easier to cut off the peel, wedge the lemon, and mash the wedges in the mug before adding in the hot tea! 😀

Good morning, dearest 😊 It is so inspiring to me that you chose to take a chance and start your own blog. So many people give up on their dreams, and never reap the benefits of seeing where life can take them if they just step outside of their comfort zone and live the life they imagined. You have worked so hard to be where you are in your career, and you should take pride in the fact that you have the power to decide how you schedule your day! Your tenacity to take on projects and see goals through to completion is a skill I greatly admire in you, and am working hard to achieve! Your blog has changed the way I look at food and exercise, and you push me everyday to have the joy and motivation that you radiate through your journey. As Eleneor Roosevelt said, ” Do what you feel in your heart to be right, for you will be criticized anyways.” 😏 Please keep doing you, and never let anyone full your spark.

Thank you for sharing! Your morning routine definitely inspires me to try to develop a more productive one myself 🙂

Hi Taralynn,
Thank you for sharing your morning routine! It is fun to read and gives me some great ideas-particularly the lemon water and making the bed. I’ve been trying to make my bed each morning for years but I always fall out of the habit. Haha. I don’t often read the comments but was interested in other morning routines and have to say I am appalled at the judgemental comments that some readers added. I understand providing constructive feedback but these comments are not that, they seem to be just pure criticism. I have to commend you for your classy and positive responses, it shows your strong and kind character. Unfortunately, these negative comments are coming from people who obviously are lacking something in their own lives, not satisfied with what they are doing in life, and are genuinely miserable people who need to put down others to be happy. I feel sorry for them. Life is too short and what a shame that they spend their time trying to bring down others. Pretty pathetic. Thanks again for sharing different areas of your life with all of us. I always enjoy reading and look forward to your posts!
Melinda says
I love your blog! I think for 26 you handle negative feed back very well. I love life and positivity and I get that from reading your blog you do too! It makes me happy to see people happy and living life, if that bothers others then they have their own issues! I love your morning routine ! I get up an hour early to have me time….Coffee, Prayer, yoga, the calm before the hectic day ahead!
Taralynn McNitt says
Thanks, Melinda!!
I just don’t really care at this point in my life who really likes me. Can’t please everyone 🙂 Sounds like you have a wonderful morning routine! I have been inspired to start doing more praying and scripture reading in the morning:) So important!
Aly says
This sounds like such a glorious morning! I am the opposite of you in that I HAVE to have an alarm otherwise I could sleep till 12pm. However, I love when I wake up early and can get a ton of stuff done all before 10am. Those are always the best days. Currently I live with my parents and grandma whom I care for during the week. I also launched a blog last April that I’ve been slowly and steadily building up. This morning routine you have is my goal and ideal morning. However, I feel it isn’t something I could achieve in this current living/work situation. One day! However, I do want to try and incorporate certain things now while I can. Walking my dog is slightly less appealing seeing that I live in a beach city so there is just houses and hills around me lol. But I could still do it. Also, drinking the lemon ginger tea with a whole lemon is something I would love to try! Thanks for sharing and taking the time to do this post! Your blog on Tumblr was one of the first blogs I ever read and seeing all that you have done and how your blog has grown since then is so insipiring! I love your style of blogging. AND YOUR DOGS ARE SO CUTE!
Ashley P says
You should be beyond proud of the life you have built for yourself, and the blog that you have grown so much over the years. You work hard and prioritize taking care of YOU- and there is NOTHING wrong with that. People are just jelly/negative/miserable/ridiculous! People apparently never learned that if you don’t have anything nice to say, not to say anything at all 🙂 I love your morning routine! I wake up super early so I can enjoy the quiet morning to myself and my coffee before work! I think me time in the morning is so important and I am glad to see that you do as well.
Taralynn McNitt says
Thank you, Ashley! That is very kind of you. I think the only thing that gets frustrating is what people don’t see behind the scenes. They only read the blog, but forget how much work it takes to write a blog/run a blog/and run everything else in your life. It is a tough job, but still fun, and I love it! It’s OK though! You can’t please everyone. I love that you also wake up early to have that time to yourself! It really is important! 😀 I’m not a night person, so I can’t do this in the evenings. Morning is my me time! xo xo xo
Emily says
I wish I had time to myself in the morning ! I don’t like feeling rushed but most days I have to just go!
I wake up at 4:15-4:30 to be at the gym by 5:30 or 6 every morning, and toss back a bowl of oatmeal before I leave. After gym I’m at work by 7, where my day starts as a teacher. I’m working until about 5:00, some days later (despite what people think, teachers don’t get to leave when the bell rings!). I’m home by 5:30 or 6, cook dinner, then read or grade papers until bed at 8.
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Emily!
Good for you for getting up so early and going to the gym! That is inspiring! Your days sound exhausted, but very very fulfilling and it’s so amazing that you get to work with kids and teach them every day! How rewarding!

Reading other people’s morning routines are my fave! I love knowing how to maximize on productivity and start the day off right. I can’t start my day without tea. If I don’t have it, the whole day is off. It’s so strange how such a little thing can have such a major impact! I’m also a huge fanatic of reading something positive in the morning, doing yoga or going for a walk, straightening up and fixing breakfast. And then I usually do one of my top 3 things to-do in the day (usually something I’d procrastinate all day long on doing). I really do have to get back into a consistent morning routine though. It’s very calming. 🙂 Thank you for sharing yours!
Jeni says
You’re very fortunate to have such a flexible and consistent morning schedule! I work two jobs and don’t have much free time most mornings, but your morning routine sounds a lot like my night routine! Giving yourself a facial and disconnecting are great ways to unwind after a long day. I definitely do the face masks– they are so therapeutic.
Taralynn McNitt says
I’m glad you give yourself that time in the evening! 🙂

I so admire your ability to wake up early and get things done! I have an 8 year old and a 2 year old. My husband is a paramedic with 3 jobs and I work full time. Come April we will be getting a puppy to boot! So I don’t really get mornings to myself. I WOULD if I was able to get up early and have some “me time” before the baby gets up, but I just can’t bring myself to get up when my alarm goes off. I just hit snooze over and over. Any tips for how I can get the hell out of bed?! 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
But puppies are fun and will keep the kiddos entertained! lol You are the best mom! I wish I could have had a dog growing up 🙁 We had cats! lol We were a military family, so it was hard to really commit to animals. I think being able to go to bed early with no distractions is a great way to wake up early without hitting that snooze button. I found giving up coffee after 12 pm helps me sleep better at night! I really go into a deep REM! Also, put your phone wayyyyyy across the room! This will make you have to physically get out of bed to shut it off 😀
Kristin says
Love this post! I’ve been wanting to rework my AM and PM routines and this was a big help. Normally I have a rushed morning but evenings are pretty relaxing so I’d like to balance the two more. During the week I’m out of bed by 6, shower, make coffee and breakfast for my husband and myself, finish getting ready, let the dogs out. It doesn’t seem like much but somehow that takes until 7:30, then I drive to work to get there around 8. Then home around 5:40, make dinner, clean, get lunches ready, take care of the dogs, try to exercise a bit, and read/watch tv. You should write about your evening routine next!
Tea has been an evening routine for my husband and me before bed but I like the idea of drinking it throughout the day as well! I really like the tea brands stash, traditional medicinals, and care, they all have organic options. I’ve read it’s important to stick to organic teas because it tends to have a lot of pesticide exposure if not organic.
What’s your typical goal for hours of sleep? It’s tough because my husband is a night owl and we’ve compromised over the years already and so it’s hard for me to get up any earlier and still get the minimum amount of sleep!!
Also-love all your responses here 😉❤️
Nicci Marquart says
I loved reading this, such a fun post, thank you! I am also a morning person.
I love how you can sort of wake up and do your own thing before the rest of the “world” is up.
One question, how did you get yourself to wake up at the same time every morning without an alarm? http://niccimarquart.com/
Taralynn McNitt says
My body has just been so used to waking up at the same time that it literally won’t let me sleep in! As soon as I’m up, I’m up! My dad has always been that way too!
Lu Ann @ The Cup of Life says
I love that tea time is a part of your morning routine! I don’t think I could have a good start to the day without my morning cup of tea 😀

Hi Taralynn,
I have been following you for about 4 years or so now. May I ask, is blogging work/job? I see so many people now who blog and it seems like that is how they make a living, but I have no idea how that works. It sounds magical!
I am going to make the pb and chocolate protein balls recipe you have this week! And possibly the matcha chocolate muffins. They look so good and I need to change my eating. I need a more healthy lifestyle, for sure.
