Hello, Monday! 🙂
I’m grateful for the rainy day we’re having because when it’s sunny and hot out, all I want to do is spend my time outdoors walking and running. This rain is forcing me to get things done, so thank you, nature. My mom told me that she could never get me to come inside when I was a kid. I spent 80% of my days outside, and apparently, things haven’t changed much.
I have some fun blogposts + videos coming up this week, and several fun events planned. My grandma, who I haven’t seen in almost four years, is visiting on Wednesday!
Today’s breakfast consisted of random almond grabs and hard boiled eggs (totally not picture worthy), but I did manage to pull together a decent lunch. I had a leftover salad (the one I walked six miles to get) and a chocolate protein shake.
On the days I’m not running, I try to get as much protein and water in me as possible. That’s the best for muscle recovery. I also have a sports massage planned for tomorrow, so staying hydrated is important and will help me get rid of all the toxins.
This protein shake had one small frozen banana, one scoop of chocolate protein powder, and one cup of unsweetened almond milk. The shake is 100% gluten free & vegan.
And now that you know what I’ve been up to today (blogging & eating) I wanted to catch you up on my week.
My Tropicana trip post will be going live later this week, and I can’t wait to share my experience at the plant with all of you. I left truly amazed.
There are a couple eats that won’t be included in that post, so I figured I’d share them here.
I woke up super early on Tuesday morning, so I could finish my last recap before taking off to visit the farm. I’m talking 4:30 am early. I wanted some eggs, fruit, and coffee for breakfast, so I ordered some up to the room.
Our day started at 7:30am, and finished around 2pm. *I’ll share everything I learned later. 😉
Some of us had about five hours before our flights. Our hotel was only fifteen minutes from the Sarasota airport, and it’s usually dead on a Tuesday evening, so we decided to hang around the hotel and get some sun.
The downtown Sarasota area was so cute. I’d like to plan a trip down here sometime.
A couple of the girls (Davida & Gina) and I walked to Whole Foods to grab some lunch to take by the pool.
The weather was perfect.
I had quinoa with grilled chicken, kale, butternut squash “noodles,” cabbage, and watermelon radishes.
I was sad to leave Florida but excited to see my pups! I left with some color too 🙂
I found these cruncha ma-me snacks at Whole Foods, and they were the perfect travel snack. They tasted so good, and they were low-calorie. I love spicy foods because it causes you to drink more water.
Instead of powering up the laptop, I decided to read Runner’s World magazine. I always get so inspired by the stories and super motivated to get out and run! That paragraph was the exact thing Meighan and I were talking about during our nine-mile run last Saturday. We felt like we could have kept going, and we forced ourselves to stay slow and enjoy the run. There is no reason our training runs need to be fast.
I arrrived at the Airport about an hour before my flight took off, so I had time to work a little. The post I worked on will be live tomorrow morning and I cannot wait for you guys to see it.
I got home around 9 pm.
I was hungry when I got home, so I made a late night dinner. I had two eggs with spinach and a random salad. The salad had smoked salmon, gouda, romaine, honey mustard almonds, prosciutto, and parmesan. I put my leftover charcuterie board to good use.
I spent Wednesday catching up on everything. Literally took ZERO photos. I’m not sure if that’s ever happened before.
Thursday didn’t start off so great.
Grumples had a mild seizure as we were walking out the door to go on our walk. When he was one, he had a seizure on a road trip, and the vet told me that I could expect another to happen in several years. I took him to the vet to make sure he was OK. He took some blood test, and everything was normal. If he starts to have them more, we will have to take him to a neurologist and check for epilepsy. He’s doing fine right now, and the doctor said I might never see another seizure again. His behavior is normal, and he’s acting like nothing ever happened.
Grumples and I got back at noon, so I had coffee, a protein shake (same as the one above but with vanilla) and headed out on a three-mile run. I wouldn’t call it a “run,” it was more of a jog. I did eleven-minute miles and finished with 100 sit-ups, 20 push-ups, 100 jumping jacks, fifteen burpees, and a fifteen-minute deep stretch session.
I had breakfast for my late afternoon lunch. I made a (two egg + four egg white) omelet, two slices Applegate bacon, and pineapple. When I’m slicing pineapple, I usually eat half of the fruit before it makes it to the plate.
Meighan and I met up Thursday evening for a six-mile walk. We just wanted to get outside, grab a coffee, and chat. I love being outdoors this time of year because everything is in full bloom.
We stopped at Le Macaron French Pastries at the Metro on our walk. It’s a new spot in Charlotte, and I highly recommend it! I added it to my Charlotte list 🙂
There were so many flavors of macarons! My goal is to try them all 🙂
They also had gelato.
Meighan and I split pistachio gelato and a gingerbread and pistachio macaron! I also ordered a small skim latte with an extra shot of espresso.
We took our drinks to go! Not going to lie, their espresso was fantastic. Sometimes lattes are a hit or miss at dessert spots, but I want to go back just for the latte!
We walked all the way down the Sugar Creek Greenway.
It started to rain once we got back uptown, but we did’t mind walking in it.
The flowers were so pretty uptown.
We did a total of six miles and decided to pick up dinner on the way back. Meighan lives right by Kyle, so we always meet up when I’m uptown. She is just like me and will use any excuse to be outside.
They just put a Potbelly’s in uptown, and I am so freaking pumped about it. I ALWAYS have their salads when I’m in D.C., and I practically lived on them when I was residing in Chicago.
This time, I ordered the “Uptown” salad. Fitting, I know. It had all-natural grilled chicken, blue cheese, red grapes, apples, dried cranberries, candied walnuts, diced red onion, and on a bed of fresh romaine, iceberg lettuce, and spinach. I had their non-fat vinigrette on the side. Their dressing is what I love the most.
The salad was SO GOOD, and I have a feeling I’ll be picking this up all summer.
Kyle and I watched movies on Thursday night and took the pups for a walk.
Early Friday morning, I walked the pups around uptown before heading home.
Can you tell I’m obsessed with Charlotte? You feel like you’re living in a quaint town, but it’s so big at the same time.
For breakfast, I had pineapple, bacon, and my go-to omelet. I’ve been drinking my coffee black lately, and I’m slowly starting to create a love for it. I never used to be able to stand it, but I hope to cut out creamer altogether by the end of this summer.
On Friday evening, I did an outdoor circuit at my house. This was really tough, but fun! I also added in some sprint work with the circuit.
100 Jump-Rope
20 Squats W/10 lb Dumbbells
30 Crunches (10 Right/10 Center/10 Left)
25 Kettlebell Round Abouts (sitting with feet up while rotating the kettlebell around your body)
10 Push-Ups
100 Jump-Rope
20 Alternating Lunges W/10 lb Dumbbells
30 Crunches (10 Right/10 Center/10 Left)
10 Push-Ups
8 Sprints
X3
It was such a beautiful night Friday, so Kyle and I went to Legal Remedy Brewing with his roommate, Steve.
We started with a flight of craft beer. We tried the blueberry, orange, strawberry cream, and french toast. My two favorites were the blueberry and strawberry cream!
We ordered the calamari fries for our starter. This appetizer led to a twenty-minute discussion about squids, which then resulted in more incredibly interesting conversations. We can always count on Steve for entertainment.
I ordered the steak salad. It came with cucumbers, carrots, tomatoes, goat cheese, onions, fries, and a medium-rare steak.
Breakfast: English muffin with bacon, egg, turkey sausage, and a banana on the side.
I met up with Meighan on Saturday morning for our weekly long run! We had no expectations and told ourselves it would be OK if we wanted to stop at mile seven or eight.
We mapped out an entire new route near Quail Hollow. This route was so pretty!
It had it’s ups and downs for sure. I loved the shaded sidewalks the most. 🙂
Once we hit mile five, I knew we were going to go all the way! It’s crazy how well a run can be when you have zero expectations.
The weather was perfect. It was 75 degrees and breezy!
Mile seven!
So not all of my running photos turn out great…
We ran five miles down the main roads and turned back around to finish the rest.
MILE TEN!
WE DID IT!!!!!! Not only did we finish the ten (with no expectations to do so) we stayed at the planned pace. We are trying to keep our miles comfortable. Looking back at my blog last year, I NEVER would have imagined running this much. I would have laughed and said “yeah right,” but this goes to show that even if you weren’t born to be a runner, you can turn yourself into one. You can truly do anything if you set your mind to it.
And let’s be real, running ten miles isn’t the easiest thing in the world. You will get aches, pains, tired, and wish you never started, but pushing through is the most rewarding part.
I will need to start doing more for fuel from now on. Even when I drink a ton of water and eat all the right foods, I get pretty dehydrated by mile eight. I’m started to worry myself because I should be burning up and hot, but instead, I get goosebumps, and I’m freezing towards the end of my run. It’s caused by heat exhaustion and dehydration, so I will start carrying water with me and getting more electrolytes in my body before and during the run. If you have any suggestions on how to stay hydrated (even if you are a water guzzler), please let me know! I don’t want to experience this during the race.`
For lunch, I had hummus and pita chips, melon, water, and salad with vinaigrette. I had a protein shake after my run too!
I needed a pick-me-up on Saturday afternoon, so Kyle and I headed to Amelie’s for a cappuccino!
To stay hydrated, I was chugging Hint waters all day. I can’t get enough of it! I drink about four bottles a day.
Kyle and I took the pups to the park to run around for a bit before we watched the basketball games. They were having so much fun!
Grumples has always loved being up on the jungle gyms.
There is nothing better than a happy pup! I also loved that they were exhausted 🙂
I made gluten free cosmic brownies with the Duncan Hines mix! They were so goooooooooood. I had to pack them up and give them to Steve or I would have eaten them all.
Steve and Kyle wanted to watch the game and get fajitas, so we headed to Taqueria El Manhattan Mexican restaurant. Kyle and I split the chicken fajitas for two. I love ordering fajitas at restaurants because they are high protein and low carb if you don’t eat the tortillas. I usually just eat them straight from the skillet with lettuce!
I have never slept better in my entire life. That ten-mile run had me passed out by ten pm and I slept until 8 am. That NEVER happens.
The boys were so cute Sunday morning 🙂
We headed uptown so Meighan and I could go on a walk and Kyle could go to the gym.
Kyle always food preps on Sundays, so Leo and I walked to the grocery store with him before meeting up with Meighan.
I had to share this workout that was sitting on Meighan’s counter. I am going to try it this week, but it looks tough! She did this at the gym for a birthday. We talked about doing this for a YouTube video because there are some workouts on the list that I have no idea what they are.
We stopped at the 7th Street Public Market for coffee and juice. I had a green juice from Viva Raw.
We had the BEST weather this weekend.
We walked about three miles uptown and on the greenway, and then stopped at Marshalls so Meighan could get a new jewelry rack. She bought a HUGE jewelry rack and carried it for three miles on the way back. It was so funny!
We stopped at Zoe’s so I could pick up a salad for dinner and some fresh fruit to snack on during the walk back.
We hit mile six by the time we got back uptown! We were both zombies yesterday, but still fought through because we wanted to be outside. We suffer from FOMO.
Kyle snapped me this of the dogs when I was out walking, and I just melted.
My favorite tossed Greek salad with extra chicken from Zoes 🙂
We also ordered pizza. Papa Johns has light pizza on their menu now! This one had extra sauce, light cheese, peppers, pineapple, Canadian bacon, and was only 165 calories a slice! Salad and pizza was the perfect Sunday dinner.
Kyle and I walked to Coco & The Director so I could grab an Americano. I needed to work and stay up a little later, but I was already falling asleep!
I was proud of myself because I was going strong on the “no cream” thing.
I am looking forward to the next couple of months! I have a lot of trips planned, my half marathon, and hello, Hawaii!
Questions for you!
- How was your weekend?
- How do you stay hydrated for 1 hr+ long workouts?
- What will April bring you?
Tara @ Run and Live Happy says
For long runs I drink water and NUUN all day the day before and the morning of. I also carry some water or NUUN with me to help me stay hydrated during my run. I’m excited about Papa John’s light pizza. We will have to try that soon! All of your salads are making me crave one now…and a macaroon! 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
I will start drinking NUUN in my drinks all day! Maybe that’s the key! I just drink water, but adding in some electrolytes may help me a ton!! I definitely treated myself this weekend!
Elizabeth says
Hi Taralynn! For longer training runs I carry a Nathan handheld water bottle (I think it holds 16 oz and I got it off Amazon for around $16). When I use it, I always add a Nuun tablet to my water, which has electrolytes. But if I’m going for a really long marathon training run, then I wear my Nathan camelbak with holds a lot more water, and still add Nuun. I also fuel every 4-5 miles with Gu gels during longer training runs.
Elizabeth 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
I just can’t hold anything in my hands, unfortunately! My shoulders start to tighten up. I may have to figure out a way to put water on the trail I’m running or carry a belt. I’ve heard the camelbacks are pretty easy to carry around! I just get annoyed with anything attached to me! I’m weird like that.
Lauren says
I love these pictures of Charlotte! I’m dying to move there and if I get an offer from the firm I’m interviewing at, I’ll get to!!
I love April. Spring is my favorite season and I can’t get enough of being outside. My mood skyrockets and all of the winter blues go away! It’s the best!
Good luck on your half! I bet you’ll rock it!!
Taralynn McNitt says
Thanks, Lauren!
Charlotte is so amazing. You’ll love it!
I am just like you, my mood changes SO MUCH in the spring.

Jennifer says
Ahhh! Such a happy and summery recap. My favorite!
My weekend was super nice. Saturday it was a high of 62 (WOO!) and SUNNY. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky! I went to my parents house and my dad and I washed my car since it was so nice. Then met up with a friend for lunch and we just sat in her driveway after catching some sun. Summer is SOOO close!
Well I usually don’t have enough time to workout for more than 40 minutes a day… however I always force myself to chug a couple of glasses of water when I’m done. I’m never thirsty right away, but definitely regret it later! Usually headaches.. I have a huge water bottle that has times on it so I try and drink the certain amount per hour to try and stay hydrated.
April will bring some super nice weather! I plan to start going on adventures to different breweries and such as the weather gets nicer, and on the 29th I head to Austin! I’m super excited! (If you can’t tell by all the exclamation points haha)
Taralynn McNitt says
Thanks, Jennifer!
I’m obsessed with all the color in the city right now.
Glad you’re getting some warmer weather!! Sounds like you had a great weekend.
It’s great you are making an effort to drink more water. I keep the pitcher on the counter and make myself chug water every time I get up from the couch. I find that room temperature water is the easiest to drink.
You will LOVE austin!!
Carrie this fit chick says
WOW yeah, 10 miles would wipe me OUT! Good for you girl! I’m not a long distance runner at all (more of a lifting gal), but am impressed with your long distance running abilities!. We had great weather in SF too.. let’s hope it sticks! April will hopefully bring me lots of picnics in the park!
Taralynn McNitt says
Thank you, Carrie!
I will be getting back into lifting and doing some strength training once my half is done! We are going to be getting some weird rain/then hot again! Guess that’s the beauty of April! xo xo

Kayla says
I drink 60oz+ water per day and always am hydrated well. However, I would get cramps in my sides and some other uncomfortable symptoms after working out, sometimes walking, and specifically jogging. After research I came to believe my electrolyte levels could be low! My boyfriend’s mom recommended some stuff she has used for years, called E-Lyte, which you can get from Amazon. You put it in water or foods or broths that are salted. It keeps me hydrated sooo well and stops the discomforts I would get from physical activity! It’s like a miracle solution. If you do put it in water it tastes extremely horrible and salty, but that’s how you know your body really really needs the electrolytes. I highly recommend!!
Taralynn McNitt says
Thank you, Kayla!! I will look into that for sure!!
Macy Hawkins says
That salad from Zoe’s looks well worth a six mile walk! It made my mouth water! Warmer weather makes me crave salad!
My weekend was definitely busy and full of work, work, and more work. We had planned to sleep in today and then get up and restart the couch to 5K program, to try to get back into the spirit of running, since we took most of the winter off, but unfortunately it stormed and ruined our plans. So, send us some good vibes that it works out for us tomorrow!
Much like you, I have trouble staying hydrated. Seems like no matter how much water I drink, I seem to sweat it all out. A friend of mine recommended having a little extra sodium in my preworkout meal to help retain some of the water, but I’ve yet to try it. Maybe you could try it out and let us know how it works for you?
April brings a trip to Santa Rosa Beach, Florida and my five year wedding anniversary with my husband, both of which I’m greatly looking forward to.
Can’t wait to read about your trip to Sarasota later this week!
Always, Macy
Taralynn McNitt says
I have it at least once a week! It’s soooooo goooood.
Rain or shine, get out there and do it!:) I actually LOVE running in the rain.
I have been having more sodium with bacon, mustard, and eggs, but I think adding more potassium and electrolytes along with the sodium will all help.
I don’t sweat either which is SUPER strange.
Have fun in Santa Rosa!!!

That is THE BEST PROTEIN POWDER!
Taralynn McNitt says
I’m so addicted to it now! It doesn’t have that weird chalky taste.

That pizza looks SO good!
I’m having pizza for dinner but it definitely won’t be that healthy.
Congrats on your awesome run!

That pizza was SO worth it!

Your recap posts are my favorite. I always feel inspired after reading!
Taralynn McNitt says
I love that 🙂 Thank you!
Ava says
You and Meighan have been rocking your runs! Does Becca run with you?
Taralynn McNitt says
Thanks, Ava!! She is great motivation!
Becca and I usually go to the gym together!
Emily says
If you plan out your route ahead of time, you should stash some water bottles in bushes! When I ran cross country in high school my coach would do that for us! I also live and swear by nuun! It’s perfect for giving you some electrolytes during long runs. I notice that I need the electrolytes more than I need actual water because I can feel light headed and faint sometimes.
Taralynn McNitt says
I literally told Meighan that we were going to do that next time! My mom puts the water on the mailbox when she’s running.
I will look into nuun! I see it at Whole Foods all the time.
Courtney says
Hi Taralynn, I’ve been reading your blog for a while and I always get so excited when you update! I admire you so much and you’ve been such an inspiration for me to become a runner! When I first began 10 months ago, I could barely run for 5 minutes. Last week, I finally achieved a life-long goal to run 3 miles straight! Today, I went into my run with no expectations and I ran 4 miles! So I can definitely relate to what you said about runs with no expectations sometimes being your best runs. I’m hoping that April will be a month of accomplishing even more goals for me!
It’s good to hear about your week; it sounds like your training is going well. I wish you the best of luck on your half-marathon!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Courtney!
I love hearing that 🙂 I am so happy and excited about your running progress! Nice job hitting the four miles! Crazy what we do when we don’t tell our body that it HAS to do something. Just make April the best running month yet!:) Remember to not push yourself too hard first starting out though 🙂
Thank you for all the kind words!
Taralynn 🙂
Allison says
For long runs I wear one of those dorky belts. I drink Scratch, it’s an all natural electrolyte drink and tastes way better than Gatorade. My favorite is the orange but they have several flavors. I recently saw it at Whole Foods too!
Taralynn McNitt says
Do you drink scratch before or after or during your run? I will have to look into it!! Thanks 🙂
Allison says
Well I run in New Mexico and Phx so all of the above. Here I feel like you are constantly sweating in warm weather so it hydrates you well with electrolytes. Similar to Gatorade without the strong flavor and natural ingredients.
Taralynn McNitt says
good to know!
Hannah says
I love your dark hair!
Taralynn McNitt says
Thanks, Hannah! I’m loving it so far!
Lizzie says
Congrats on running 10! Coffee is always my pre-workout. I’ve started using GU Bella during my runs and they help a lot with keeping my energy up.
1. My weekend was great! I ran a personal half marathon around a metro Park near my house during blue heron nesting season. It was gorgeous.
2. I carry 12 oz water bottle with me, the kind that stairs to your hand. It even has a pocket to keep my feels in when I run. I have a heart condition that requires me to hydrate often and it had really bumped up my running game! I’m training for a full marathon eek!
3. April is bringing a trip to Toronto, lots of concerts, and of course lots of running.
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Lizzie!
Thank you very much 🙂 I will look into GU for sure!
I bet that was beautiful & congrats on running the distance! That is so great.
I just need to figure out how to carry these things without them annoying or bothering me. I wore a belt once and it drove me nuts the whole nine miles. I’ve considered the backpacks.
Sounds like you have a fun April too!
Lizzie says
Oops I meant the water bottle sticks to your hand, not stairs. It’s weird at first, but you get used to the weight. I’m thinking of investing in an 18 or 20 oz for 15+ miles (haven’t got it yet!)
Sometimes when I run around the city, I plan to hit land marks sheet I know they’ll have a drinking fountain or a sink every 3 ish miles. A lot of parks in my city have public drinking fountains, it’s
super helpful in the summer.
Taralynn McNitt says
I wish more places had the fountains!

How was your weekend?
We have a 4 days short vacation.and I had crossed the desert with my hiking friends!it would be lie if I tell you it’s not difficult. Actually we all exhausted, but when we saw the stars of sky in desert .it’s all worth it! We took 3 days cross the desert from the northe of China.
How do you stay hydrated for 1 hr+ long workouts?
Usually I just keep drinking and eat more fruit.
For this short vacation .it’s really hard .i have taken 6 big bottles of water for 3 days.i can’t waste these precious water.and control myself not drink too muce once time.you know.but we all got through .for now.man.i just stay in cafe and drink whatever and how much I want
What will April bring you?
Hiking and sports.spring is the best season for me to go hiking and moutain climbing.
Taralynn McNitt says
That sounds AMAZING!!!! What an incredible experience that must have been.
Enjoy April!
Tara H. says
Unfortunately in Minnesota, we got rain all weekend so I was productive with homework, but I fit in a pickup game of basketball on Friday at the gym on campus! Have you tried BCAA’s during your workouts? It may help some.
Side note, I love macaroons as much as you do, but have you ever tried to make them yourself? I have tried and failed but was wondering if you knew any tips or tricks…maybe a good blog idea!
April brings the end of school and I couldn’t be more excited for summer!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Tara!
I haven’t done those workouts, but I’ll def be looking into them. I love playing basketball so it’s cool you fit in a game Friday! My friends and I play when it gets warm.
I have made them ONCE! & they turned out amazing. I am going to try to do some this spring with Meighan. I’ll totally blog about it.
YAY END OF SCHOOL!
Harriet says
Hi Taralynn!. This may sound odd, but to keep myself hydrated before a long run i have a large glass of water with 1 tablespoon of mother apple-cider vinegar, like i said odd, but it works for me and i don’t get cramps while running. I also use NUUN hydration tablets in my water 95% of the time especially after a run or Crossfit session. my weekend was great and so relaxing, i managed to fit in a 5km run then a deep tissue massage and dyed my hair back to brown after being blonde for the last 4 years!!. April is going to bring me a lot of uphill running training as my friends and i have entered a 5km mud run and obstacle course race at the beginning of May.. and its my first ever race!!
Have a great week!!!
Taralynn McNitt says
Sometimes the odd things work the best.
I may have to try that out, especially the Nuuns. I have a deep tissue massage scheduled for this morning!! How are you loving the brown nonw??
You’ll LOVE that race!! Keep up the fun workouts and it’s great you are doing it with your friends!
Alden Green says
Get the Nuun tabs for sure! I workout outside in Texas and in the summer on runs my body uses more water than I am putting in. Even if I drink a gallon and a half per day. Drinking/flushing that much water can rob you of all the electrolytes that help your body USE the water. Add some pink salt on your food too because we all need a little bit of sodium and hydrating so much can flush that out completely.
Taralynn McNitt says
Thank you!! I’m going to do all of this!
Harriet says
I love having brown hair! It’s still a bit weird when you wake up in the morning and look in the mirror and think oh yup I changed the colour..
Taralynn McNitt says
Oh, I know that feeling for sure !
Tayna says
Love the colors and brightness in this post.
Taralynn McNitt says
Thanks 😀

How was your weekend?
Nice and relaxed. Didn’t do much more than enjoying the sun, going to the gym and watching movies.
How do you stay hydrated for 1 hr+ long workouts?
I don’t even think I have ever done such long workouts haha.
What will April bring you?
Lots to do! My semester enters the tough final phase, I have to find a room for summer, figure out my bachelor thesis and think about the future. Scary! But I’ll also visit my best friend in Madrid, I haven’t seen her in half a year 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
Those are the best types of weekends!
I never used to either! (running is the only exception)
Those may all be scary things, but REWARDING!!!

Hello Taralynn!
I come from Poland and I have been reading your blog since I was 13 (now I’m 20), it started with the tumblr and since then I always remember to come back to your blog as often as I can
I never comment anything, dont know why, just my nature 🙂
I just wanted to tell you that today I saw that 25 spring challenge and I am going to start it since tommorow! <3
I am super excited :)))))
Hope you know where Poland is because you should definitely come&see its beauty 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Barbara!
That has been a very long time! Thank you for following all of these years 🙂
I hope you enjoy the 25 day spring challenge! It’s tough but worth it 🙂
I definitely want to visit one day 🙂
Have a great week!

1. My weekend was okay. I binge watched that new Netflix show, 13 Reasons Why. It was AMAZING. I’m finally getting over a cold, so I got to go out for a 4 mile run on Sunday. It’s starting to turn into spring here in New York…finally 🙂
2. I wear one of those fuel belts for all my runs because like you, I can’t carry a bottle while I’m running. Like everyone else is saying here, remember your electrolytes! You sweat out a lot of salt when you’re running, which can make dehydration worse. And also remember that for your race, they’ll have water stops set up every mile or so with cups of water, so even if you don’t figure out the hydration thing by then, it’ll be okay. Do you ever take fuel while you’re running? If I’m going more than 10 miles, I bring an energy gel with me. They taste pretty gross, but they do the job.
3. April will (hopefully) bring me finally getting out and meeting new people. I’ve been having a hard time adjusting to living in NYC because I have so few friends, so I’m hoping to branch out a little more!
Taralynn McNitt says
Kyle and I just started it on Sunday night. Glad you are getting over that cold! No fun at all.
I will definitely be getting my electrolytes in check! That is probably what is going on and it’s all happening at mile 8! The gels are a great idea.
You’d think it would be easy to get friends in NYC! Have you’d one any meet-up groups?!
Hope you have a great week!
Whitney says
Hi Taralynn!! I wanted to see how your legs are doing? I know you had stated in a previous post that they were swelling some after your runs. Also, I am not a runner (my sister is the runner of the family) but I am a nurse, and think maybe during your runs you should drink gatorade, powerade, or something like that, as it will quickly replace all your electrolytes while you run. Room temperature and not ice cold that way your stomach doesn’t cramp. Hope this helps!!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Whitney!! My legs do swell still and it even happens days after a run, and it’s caused by the inflammation. I have a doctors appointment and deep tissue massage scheduled so hopefully they both help. You are definitely right that I need to hydrate while I run! I love room temperature water!
Whitney says
Ok good!! I hope the doctors appointment goes well. Happy running!! You are doing fantastic!!!!
Taralynn McNitt says
Thanks girl!
Lauren @ Following the Path of Life says
Hey, Taralynn! Congrats on the ten-mile run!!! It looks like you guys had a blast! Also, thanks for sharing that article excerpt from “Runner’s World”; I think I needed that reminder. 🙂
1. My weekend was really good, except that my IT band flared up from my long run.:( It’s feeling better though, so hopefully a Wednesday run will be okay. Hubby just purchased a scroll saw, so he was making cool projects with that all Saturday afternoon. On Sunday we had lunch with some friends after church and mostly had a pretty laid-back rest day!
2. I’m one of those people who gets serious migraines if I don’t drink enough water on a run or if I get overheated, so hydration is critical. I invested in a running belt with a water bottle holder (Nathan Triangle Hydration Waist Pack), and then I take a few sips every 3 miles or so. That routine seems to be working pretty well for me, as long as I still cool off enough afterwards. I’ve also started drinking coconut water in addition to regular water after my runs because, from what I’ve read, coconut water functions as a natural electrolyte.
3. April is going to bring a lot of craziness because it’s the last month for all of the church activities I’m involved in. But hopefully the month will also include building raised beds for a garden, planting the garden, maybe going on a road trip, and spending more time with a close friend who will be leaving at the end of May.
Thanks for sharing your life with us! I’m looking forward to seeing what videos you come out with!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Lauren!
Thank you so much 🙂 Runners world and Shape magazine are literally my weekly reads for motivation and little inspiring reminders.
Definitely, stretch that IT BAND!! That saw is so much fun. My mom and I used to make little cut-outs and paint them for yard decor!
I have read the same about coconut water, and I’ll have to look into getting that waist pack!
Sounds like you have a fun and busy April ahead of you!! It always stinks when a close friend’s leaves, but hopefully, you’ll be able to visit her.
xo xo xo
Emily Weir says
When my dad and I had our longer training runs we often would map our run to loop around a specific corner in his neighborhood where we would stash water bottles in the bushes. Every time we ran by we’d pause for 20 seconds to get a couple sips and continue on our way. Good news is whatever half you’re running will have water stops along the way for you. Also, the energy jelly beans you buy in sports stores did wonders for me. I’d keep them in my pocket and eat a few around mile 9 to get me through the last few miles.
Taralynn McNitt says
That is honestly such a good idea. Meighan and I were talking about doing this. I tried the energy jelly beans but they made me so thirsty lol!!
Lattany says
I learned a few years ago that I simply have to carry water on runs over 6 miles. I just get too dehydrated and end up having bad runs. I use a hand-held water bottle with a strap, meant for carrying while running. I’ve carried it through countless half marathons and several full marathons with no trouble!
Taralynn McNitt says
The only issue with that is my shoulders tighten up if I hold anything. I may have to bring water too, but maybe strapped onto my belt. Glad you’ve had success with hydrating while running!
Jennifer says
A girl I follow on IG is a marathon runner and has posted a couple things shes uses before and during races. Nunn Hydration tablets, Honey Stinger chews and then before a race she mentioned eating quinoa pasta. I guess for the carbs to help sustain her energy. Anyways, maybe those will help? Good luck on the rest of your training and your race!
Taralynn McNitt says
Thank you for the recommendations!! Those all sound great. I am definitely paying attention to my diet and what I do to hydrate now.
Mallory @ Boston Runner Girl says
I think if you hydrate well the days leading up to the run, you should be able to go 1 hr + without water. Can you plan for water fountain stops along the way or plant water bottles along your running path?
I’m running a half on May 13th. Hoping to break 1:35…yikes!! You are going to kill your half, you’ve been training like crazy!
Taralynn McNitt says
See, I do make sure to chug water DAYS before, and I make sure to drink two cups of water for every cup of coffee. I just can’t seem to hold the water and what is really strange is that I hardly EVER sweat. It’s almost not human lol I will totally plan to have water and gels with me the next time!
HOLY MOLY!!! That is a fast time. lol I just want to finish by 2:10! lol and I have no expectations so finishing is the goal!!
Gabrielle says
Hey girl! Awesome job on your running!!! I love Nuun tablets…they have awesome flavors. Strawberry lemonade is my favorite! It’s filled with electrolytes and I always try to drink those before and after a workout. They also have ones for energy etc. Let me know if you try!
Taralynn McNitt says
Thanks, Gabrielle!
Sounds like I really need to get some of these Nuun Tablets!
I am going to pick some up at Whole Foods after my deep tissue massage this afternoon.
Kaitlin says
When I was training for my marathon, hydration was KEY! I bought this running belt and used it on my long runs.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B011E0OQ22/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It’s also helpful to store your phone and energy gu/chews in. Dropping off water bottles ahead of time at certain locations on your route is also helpful. Finally, I used the Pedialyte powder packets in my water and they really helped with keeping my hydrated! Hope this helps and go luck with your half marathon! You will do great! 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
That belt looks amazing, but did it bother you or annoy you during your run? I’m so weird about having things attached to me.
I am going to look into those water packets!!

I don’t quite understand why Americans call ham Canadian Bacon? I mean…I live in Canada and bacon is bacon and ham is ham. No menu would ever say “Canadian bacon”…Do you not have ham? What’s the difference between ham and your version of Canadian Bacon? Is it just back-bacon (which is basically ham) that you guys started calling Canadian Bacon? Because trust me, as Canadians…bacon is strips of greasy pork-goodness. And ham is just boring-ham. And when paired with pineapple on a pizza, it’s called a Hawaiian pizza. But I digress…but maybe a non-Canadian, US-er can explain…..! But then again, I don’t understand why Americans pronounce Montreal the way they do…it’s actually pronounced like Money or Monday…(as in Mun-day, Mun-ey, Mun-treal)…instead of Monnnn-treal like Montana.
Taralynn McNitt says
I can’t really give you answers to why we do the things we do 😉
Kathy says
I love your answer ?
Linda @ The Fitty says
OMG IS THAT ACTUALLY A THING–YOU GUYS CALL IT CANADIAN BACON?? Haha because we honestly call it just ham!
Taralynn McNitt says
THAT IS NUTS! 😉
Jessie @ The Acquired Sass says
1. My weekend was great! I had bridal shower #2, which meant quality time with friends and family who I don’t see often. PLUS, good food!
2. I’m super lucky in that when I run with my running group our routes have water stops set up for us. Otherwise, I have a hydration pack that I run with, it goes on my back and has a little straw thing. I tried holding a water bottle, but it hurt my wrists after a few miles. If I don’t want to wear my pack, I’ll try to plan a route I know has water fountains, or stash a water bottle in a bush somewhere halfway along my route.
I also really like Glukos for electrolytes during a run. The pouches are kind of big compared to a Gu, but they are liquid glucos, so you don’t need water to take them, which is a big plus in my book. Plus, they seem to be really easy on the stomach.
I have 11 miles on the schedule this Saturday – so I’m going to try a new pre-run breakfast & fuel to see how it might work for my race.
3. April is SO busy. This weekend is my bachelorette party – we’re doing a huge sleepover, snacks & drinks, and Mean Girls, and music, and games. The following weekend is Easter, so I’ll make a road trip to see my family. Then the next weekend is my half marathon! Which I am ready to ROCK. And then hopefully take “engagement pictures” since we get married in less than 40 days. Better late than never?
Is your HM April 22nd or 23rd? I think I remember it being the same weekend as mine!
Taralynn McNitt says
That sounds like a great weekend! Love food & friends.
That bush stash sounds like something I’m going to start doing!!
I have heard about those, so I’ll check them out. I literally have like ten items in my amazon shopping cart right now lol
Let me know how that breakfast goes! I can’t wait to hear about your 11 miles!
I can’t believe youre running eleven miles during your bachelorette weekend! YOU ARE A ROCK STAR!!!! love your laid back attitude 😉
It’s the 30th! I head to NYC on the 25th!
Mercedes says
My brotherinlaw and sister are in a marathon clinic and always use nuun tablets in their water! And also have GU gels https://shop.guenergy.com/products/energy-gel?variant=18591845697 for energy!
Taralynn McNitt says
Just bought some!:)
Molly says
Enjoy your visit with your Grandma! And congrats on your run!! Don’t worry about it during the race, because there will be water (and usually gatorade) along the course. I usually stop at every station even if I’m not thirsty just to stay hydrated. And be sure to drink lots and lots of water a few days leading up to the race. Also coconut water is supposed to be good for electrolytes so that’s always an options as well! I used to just always drink my coffee black (and still do enjoy it that way sometimes), but just got tired of it and felt like maybe all the acidity was hurting my stomach a little so now I add about a tablespoon of cream (or almond milk!) in my morning cup. I am so jealous of all the cute coffee shops you have near you! I cannot wait to visit Charlotte someday, mainly for the food 😉
Taralynn McNitt says
Thanks, Molly!!!
You will totally love Charlotte 🙂 I’m obsessed. There is something new popping up monthly!
I need to try more coconut water in my diet for sure!
Liz says
Hi!
How was your weekend?
Relaxing! I had a rough week at work and didn’t sleep well. I slept until 10:30 am on Saturday and was full of energy. Saturdays are all for cleaning, so I can do nothing on Sunday. I painted my nails, took care of my hair and eated good Asian food. Perfect!
How do you stay hydrated for 1 hr+ long workouts?
Staying hydrated is a problem. When it gets really hot, I take a small handled water bottle with me and add some honey and a pinch of salt.
What will April bring you?
Nice and warm days, great runs… I live by the beach, so this month will also bring me some sunburns… I’m careful but never enough. I’m planning my first beach day for Easter (hard to choose between my new swimsuits… ^^)
Taralynn McNitt says
Sounds like you had a great weekend.
Honey and salt water? That actually sounds like a great combo! I may have to try that with coconut water.
PERFECT APRIL!!
Selina says
Hi Taralynn. I love your blog and pictures! Can you do a post about Kyle’s meal prepping? Thanks!
Taralynn McNitt says
YES! That would be fun.
Linda @ The Fitty says
Honestly? I don’t bring any fluids with me for my workouts if I’m running outdoors. I already have an ipod in hand to listen to audio podcasts, and that’s enough for me to hold. Besides, it kind of bothers the OCD side of me when my water is swishing in my bottle constantly, you know?
April 28 is my birthday and I’ll be turning 20–hip hip horray! I’ve been contemplating whether or not I should host a party or not–I love games and I love presents but the entire idea of trying to entertain people and planning food and a time stresses me out. Thoughts, Tara? Should I just go for it?
Taralynn McNitt says
GO FOR IT!!!! You deserve to have a good time:)
Lee says
I have done two half-marathons so far. What is good about the races I have done (and I am sure the one you will be doing) is that they provide water all the way through. Also, they usually provide Gu gels-which are good for giving quick energy along the race–they taste like and are the consistency of cake batter.
If you don’t like carrying anything during your practice runs, here is an idea…since you map out your runs ahead of time, just have Kyle meet you at a certain point along the run and he can give you water. Like a little water station. Haha! 😉
Taralynn McNitt says
I hope (bet the do) provide the gels!:) That’ll be nice so I don’t have to carry anything.
Kyle may start riding the bike with me!
Teresa says
Before the questions – my husband and I have a potbelly blocks from our house. It’s our favorite spot and I always get the Uptown. I love the onion/grape/apple combo. We try and replicate this for lunches at home once in a while too!
Weekend was awesome! I finished my first 8K and my husband finished his first 10 miler!
I find I stay the most hydrated by drinking a lot of water the night BEFORE a long workout. Waking up and chugging a bunch of water before heading out to run doesn’t do it for me – only gives me a slight stomach ache.
April is going to bring a lot of rain in Chicago, a girls weekend next weekend complete with massages and facials (much needed!), and beginning my training for my first 10K!
Have a great Tuesday <3
Taralynn McNitt says
I’m glad I tried this combo! I used to get the vegetarian chickpea but they don’t have it at our potbelly’s 🙁 I used to eat it all the time in Chicago!!!
NICE JOB ON YOUR RACE!!!!! I know you were training hard for it.
I wish I could hold onto the water!
You will do so amazing at your 10k!
Autumn says
They’re putting a Potbelly’s right next to my work and I am SO excited! I’ve heard great things about them! Can’t wait to try them 🙂
Awesome recap post!

Taralynn,
I’ve done 5 half marathons and numerous other road races over the years and always use my fuel belt if I’m running more than 6 or 7 miles. Mine has 2 slots in the back for 10 oz water bottles (that come with the belt). I fill these up with water before runs and may pop an electrolyte tablet in one of them if it’s really hot outside. I will alternate on the run with water, then electrolyte drink. If I’m not feeling like the electrolyte tabs, I’ll fill one bottle with coconut water. For me, this works just as well. I only drink water once every couple of miles after mile 6 or 7 and I don’t chug it, only a few sips until I feel like I’ve had enough. You don’t want it sloshing in your belly! Also, I use a GU after mile 7 (usually) if I’m feeling tired. I always have one at some point during a half marathon to keep my energy up. To re-reference the fuel belt, I bought mine from road runner sports. They also have them at places like Academy Sports! Have fun running and good luck on your half!
Taralynn McNitt says
Thanks for all the helpful tips! Nice job on running 5 halves 🙂 I adore road runner sports! I’ll check out those belts!
Thanks sarah!
Rachael says
I felt the same way about holding things in my hand while running – however, the shoulder tightness comes from actively gripping something, and those muscles aren’t necessary with a handheld water bottle! I promise you – the strap holds it in place with no work on your end! As far as a belt, let’s get runner-honest: do you ever have gastro problems when you run? ‘Cause I get the toots. If you’re the same, a water belt probably isn’t the best option; I absolutely hated having something bouncing around on my gut!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hahaha that made me laugh! I think I’m going to start hiding water bottles in the bushes and hopefully the race route provides the goods 🙂 I’m sure they will!!!
Carly says
So sorry to hear Grumples had a bad Thursday, but I’m glad to hear he’s doing ok. I hope you never see another seizure with him… so scary! Grumples and Leo are so adorable together playing and running. Happy pups are the best always!
I’m the same way when spring weather hits… I can’t get enough of being outside! Only a bad weather day will get me inside.
All fo the macaron flavors look so fun! I will have to remember to stop by when I finally visit your awesome city! p.s. I love your new Charlotte section, I’ve definalty already spent hours looking at the places you mention and reading different reviews.
The salad from Potbellys looks amazing and I have every intention of recreating it at home!
So glad to hear your long run went well, the route looks beautiful! Dehydration is the worst, I’ve seen another blogger that has a hydration vest that she wears for run, that wouldn’t force you to carry a bottle and throw off your stride or anything. I’ve seen the hint waters around, but never tried them. Now I will for sure be trying them!
My weekend was full of snow on Saturday and flying home to Colorado to visit the family on Sunday. So busy I guess you’d say!
For hour long workouts I try to drink as much gatorade mixed with water as I can. I do a third gatorade and the rest water so I get some electrolytes in and they absorb faster when watered down!
I’m hoping that April brings spring! It hasn’t been very warm here yet, so I’m itching to get outside and soak up some sun!
Taralynn McNitt says
Me too! & thanks girl. I love when the pups are happy.
Lol even a bad weather day is hard if it’s warm!
LOVE that it was helpful!!! I’ll be adding to it all the time now 🙂
Such an easy salad to do at home for sure!!
GET THE HINT FOR SURE!!! SO AMAZING
I can’t believe you’re still getting snow. We had 84 degree weather yesterday!

Nuun is great, but I find that it can also really upset my stomach due to the artificial sugar. I am training for my first half marathon in May and I just discovered WTRMLN WTR. It’s incredible! You should check it out 🙂

Hi Taralynn! I used to work in a running store and really enjoy running a lot! My recommendation for you with hydration during your long runs is to try Clif Shot Bloks in the Margarita flavor. It has extra sodium and electrolytes to help keep you hydrated! They work really well and I used to always use them for my long summer runs. They are also much more natural than other energy gel options out there. Good luck!!
Taralynn McNitt says
Thanks, Abbey! I’ve seen those and I’ll definitely try them out!!!
Laura says
Hi! I just completed my second half marathon last month and bought this running belt: https://spibelt.com/shop/spibelt/the-original-spibelt/
I loved it! I was able to put my phone, money and energy chews inside. I wore it in front and I didn’t even notice it was there. I actually had to check a few times to make sure I still had it on! If you use a belt, I highly recommend using wireless headphones if you want to listen to music. It made it super convenient not having a cord going to the belt. As far as staying hydrated, the race should have water or gatorade stations at certain miles. Mine told us what miles ahead of time so I would eat the energy chews right before a station so I could wash them down! The girl I ran with also had a friend at mile 9 with extra water and energy chews! You will do great!
Taralynn McNitt says
Nice job!:) I do have a belt like that (somewhere) lol
Thank you for all the helpful tips!:) Can’t wait!

I hope Grumples is ok!!!
Taralynn McNitt says
He is! Just a scary moment. 🙁

But you finished!:)

I had no idea about Potbelly salads!! We have several here in College Station and I have never grabbed a salad. I will have to do that.
I use NUNN tablets in my water for extra hydration.
I have been training super hard for a half marathon that I have end of April…..annnnnnnd this past weekend I broke my toe cleaning house. Doc has me in a boot for 6 weeks…. Im SO bummed.
Im seriously trying to lose weight as well… any ideas on what I could do at home or in the gym to help me not lose my endurance and help with weight loss while I wait on my toe to heal?!?!
Taralynn McNitt says
YES! They are so so so so good. & get their fat free vinaigrette. It’s amazing.
I just bought some NUUN!
NO!!!!!!:(I’m so sorry to hear that!!! I’m about to clean the house now, so I’ll be protecting my toes 🙁
Just a lot of floor exercises and circuits! Leg lifts, sit ups, weights, one legged push ups.
Also, can you swim? Treading water may be light on the foot and an amazing workout!

When it comes to me I always try to eat some beetroot as a prerun snack. It helps me run much better. I usually grate it and have it in my omelette.
Taralynn McNitt says
I can’t do anything with beets lol. But that is a pretty awesome natural remedy.

You seem so genuinely happy lately – I love how your blog has shown that over the past year. You deserve every bit of it! Keep up the running, I can’t wait for you to run your first half. I’m also a runner and your first race is indescribable!
Taralynn McNitt says
Thank you, Emily! I feel genuinely happy.
I appreciate your kind words. I am SO excited for it!!!!

Hi Taralynn!
How was your weekend?
This weekend has been AMAZING! I spent a few hours at a nursery yesterday with my fiancé getting flowers (several rose bushes) and seeds/bulbs to pretty up my yard! I’m so excited to get a vegetable garden going and eat from my own yard this summer! We spent a few hours yesterday outside weeding to get ready for planting and it was one of my favorite days in a long time. Today I ran my 3rd ever half marathon and came out with a 14:30 PR! I was pretty excited. 🙂 As for the rest of the day? Catching up on shows and resting my tired body haha
How do you stay hydrated for 1 hr+ long workouts?
I recently bought a Nathan hydration vest. It has a bladder that you can fill up to 2L. I had a belt with water on it before, but the constant bouncing was super annoying and seemed to make me tired faster. I actually forget that I have the vest on! Plus it’s really easy access to water with the mouth piece. I wore it for my half marathon today and their was no weird rubbing and it didn’t feel too heavy (I filled the water to the 1L mark). After a long run I rehydrate with the NUUN tabs. I can’t take them during a run though, they always make me nauseas while running for some reason.
What will April bring you?
April will bring me more garden fun, family time, and hopefully solidifying final wedding plans!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Julie!!
Sounds like you had a very fun and adventurous weekend. Congrats on finishing your half marathon + pr! That is so great and exciting!
I am going to look into trying out the nathan hydration vest. I have heard amazing things and I hate those big camelback backpacks that flop around!
I love how happy and positive your comment was!!
Made my day!
