Hi Guys.
I don’t think I’ve blogged on a Saturday in months! I’m usually on the go, visiting coffee shops, working out, or trying new restaurants, but I’m fighting a little travel cold today. I have that annoying sinus headache that won’t go away, so I’m resting up before dinner tonight. It’s a special weekend because it’s Kyle’s birthday. I have surprise dinner plans at a very unique restaurant and a HUGE surprise adventure for tomorrow. You guys will have to follow all of my snaps to get updates as to what I’m up to (you won’t want to miss it.) I’m not over-exaggerating on this one either…it’s a big deal. Kyle still doesn’t know, so I can’t blog about it yet.
This morning Kyle and I took the Grump man for a walk. I wish I could have taken the Canadian weather back home with me. It was in the high 80’s at 9am! It’s going to be in the 90’s today, so I’m fine with lounging inside.
I just finished watching last week’s episode of The Night Of. There are only five episodes so far, but if you guys haven’t watched it yet, you might want to jump on board. It’s one of the BEST shows I’ve seen in a very long time. It’s hard to explain the show without giving anything away, so just take my word for it. You’ll be hooked in the first five minutes.
Since I’m sitting here lounging with a cup of hot tea, I figured it’d be the perfect time to share some photos from my trip to Winnipeg, Canada with General Mills and catch you guys up on some other stuff I’ve been up to. I will be writing up a separate post with all kinds of fun facts about the farms, General Mills and oats soon! I just wanted to share some other photos and eats form the trip.
I woke up at 4:45 am on Tuesday morning so I could get in a quick gym workout, a cup of coffee, shower and get my stuff ready for the trip. I had a banana and a bag of trail mix for breakfast at the airport. Becca dropped me off and wrote me the cutest card for the plane ride. Im so blessed to have a best friend like her! The flight was great. I landed in Winnipeg at 2:30pm. As soon as I walked out of the airport, I felt like I was in heaven. The breeze, the cooler temperature, zero humidity…makes me want to escape to Canada in the summer.
Dinner wasn’t until six, so Brittany (from Eating Bird Food) and I headed out to explore the beautiful city of Winnipeg.
The Forks Market was right next to our hotel, so we stopped in there. It was such a cute place with shops, restaurants and COFFEE. The Forks had gardens, sculptures, restaurants, shops, and all kinds of other fun attractions.
We walked about a mile or so along the Assiniboine River. The river walk lead us to the Manitoba Legislative Building.
Louis David Riel
“Riel’s historical reputation has long been polarized between portrayals as a dangerous half-insane religious fanatic and rebel against the Canadian nation, or by contrast a heroic rebel who fought to protect his Francophone people from the unfair encroachments of an Anglophone national government. He is increasingly celebrated as a proponent of multiculturalism, although that downplays his primary commitment to Métis nationalism and political independence.”
The beautiful Government house. Can I please have?
We all met in the lobby for dinner at the Mud & Stone Studio. This place was amazing. I felt like I was jumping into someone’s fancy Instagram account (I guess I sort of was.)
It was great getting to know everyone and eating delicious food made by The Store Next Door. First course: Pressed Watermelon/Pickled Rind/Radish/Chervil/Chive Oil/Cold Pressed Canola/Halloumi
Second Course: Lemon Ricotta Gnocchi/Blistered Tomatoes/Kale/Spiced Pepitas
Ice Course: Gin & Tonic Sorbet/Grated Cucumbers/Flowers Fourth Course: Seared Scallops/Salt Roasted Beet/Grapefruit/Sweet Pea Puree/Micro Greens Dessert: Earl Grey Poached Apricots/Meringue/Lemon Curd/Cheerio & Roasted Almond It was such a great night! I was EXHAUSTED and so ready to hit the pillow once I got back to the hotel. I set my alarm clock and went to bed. I sleep so well in hotel beds for some reason. I woke up at 5 am to fit in a workout. I ran three miles and then did some weights at the hotel gym.
I grabbed coffee at the front desk to take back up to the room with me. Breakfast wasn’t until 8:00 and I knew I wouldn’t be able to go that long without coffee. This trip made me realize how dependent my body is when it comes to coffee. I went to bed the night before with a huge caffeine headache because I was having withdrawals. I should probably cut back… BREAKFAST We were so spoiled. Look at all those toppings!
And all the milk choices…
I have a box that General Mills sent me sitting on my kitchen table. I have YET to open it. I did try the Pumpkin Spice Cheerios at breakfast while I was there and THEY ARE BETTER THAN GREAT, GREATER THAN ANY CEREAL OR PUMPKIN FLAVORED ANYTHING I’VE EVER HAD! I don’t know how long I’ll be able to go without opening that box.
We did some introductions and learned a little more about General Mills and the importance of the farming.
We spent some time at the Lefley Family Farm, where a large percentage of General Mill’s oats come from! I know what you’re thinking & YES…I’m standing on your future Cheerios.
I was so happy that General Mills invited me along on this trip because it was so informative and I gained so much knowledge about farmers, the company and of course, OATS!
It was also great getting to meet these lovely ladies! You should most definitely check out their blogs (if you haven’t already.)
*Tina (Carrots N’ Cake), *Julie (Peanut Butter Fingers), *Gina (Fitnessista),*Brittany (Eating Bird Food)!
The farm reminded me of being home in Iowa <3 The Lefley Farm Dog, Case! He was the best dog ever. We were spoiled again with a delicious lunch at the Lefley farm made by The Store Next Door.
We started with a hearts and roots summer salad with crunchy vegetables & a mint vinaigrette. I had the grilled mennonite chicken (DELICIOUS) with toasted quinoa topped with roasted beets, kale and sunflowers seeds. So many recipe ideas on this trip. The macarons were the talk of the trip. The filling inside of the macaron’s were made with milk infused with Golden Grahams and Trix cereal. How clever is that? You can never go wrong with fresh fruit! They also had sparkling water and sparkling rhubarb iced tea for beverage options! We toured more of the farm after lunch and even got to play on the tractor!
Learned more about the oat process at the Paterson Grain facility. It was so cool to learn how the food we eat and love ends up on our table. I will share more details in the next blog post!
Dinner at the Lefley Farm!
The set up was beautiful.
Antiques found on the Lefley Farm from over the years.
Beets & Figs. Heirloom Tomatoes/Savory Granola/Cold Pressed Canola/Pomegranate Molasses
Shaved Carrots/Cumin/Orange
Lebanese & Romaeso Zucchini/Fresh Herbs De Provence
New Potatoes/Warm Bacon Vinaigrette/Pickled Mustard Seed/Nature’s Farm Eggs
Braised BBQ Beef Brisket & it was PHENOMENAL.
Herbed Porchetta. Dessert: ?Mini Lemon Meringue Pies &?Mini Strawberry Vanilla Cheesecakes with Cheerio Crust & Pickled Strawberries. Cheesecake isn’t my go-to for dessert. I like it, but I don’t crave it! THIS CHEESECAKE was crave worthy. The Cheerio crust was such a great idea. Our side of the table demolished these and then hunted for more! We headed to the fields again to take sunset shots of the group! I found this pretty lady bug
Back to this coffee addiction. I had the worst headache by the time we got back to the hotel. I thought maybe tons of water and a light run could cut it loose, but nope. I ended up getting a latte with an extra shot of espresso because I couldn’t tolerate it anymore. Right after I drank the tenth sip, the headache went away. I instantly fell asleep after drinking the cup.
“Since caffeine narrows the blood vessels that surround your brain, when you stop taking it they expand again, and that can cause pain”
I knowingly have a caffeine addiction, so I’m going to try to ween myself off the amount I’m taking in. I will try my best to stick to a cup and a half in the morning and then no more after noon. It’ll be tough, but those headaches are an indicator that I need to do something about it.
I woke up around 5:00am to go for a light run followed by a walk around The Forks. My run was only about two miles at a very slow pace. I was more interested in taking photos!
I walked for almost two hours. I did a couple set of stairs and calf raises. Breakfast was at 8:30 and we sat around talking about the changes General Mills is making and some of our thoughts. I will again share more with you about that in another post. I just grew so much respect for General Mills after interacting with them and hearing all about the changes they are making and have already made.

We all headed to the airport around ten to catch out flight! I had some snacks in Chicago. Coffee from Starbucks, Field Trip Turkey Jerky (All Natural Gluten Free Turkey Jerky, Cracked Pepper), Banana, & a That’s It Fruit Bar. Our flight had us get off the plane so they could fix it for maintenance and then we had to get right back on it about fifteen minutes later. I landed in Charlotte around 8! I picked up some dinner because I didn’t feel like grocery shopping. I had a kale salad from Whole Foods that had almonds, apples, cranberries and seeds. I also had a grilled piece of chicken on top.
I was so excited to see my boy on Friday morning! I gave him a bath and then we played in my parents backyard for about an hour. I had to catch up on my August Fit Challenge! I pulled an older workout that I missed instead of a free day.
One Hour Running/Walk Workout. (this is one of my favorites)
Walk five minutes, run five minutes, walk five minutes…etc. for one hour.
*Need easier? run 1 or 2 minutes/walk 9 or 8 minutes for one hour.
*Stretch 10-15 MinutesKyle and I met up with some friends at Mac’s Speed shop and we split grilled wings.
I had such a fun week and I cannot wait to share what I’m doing on Sunday morning with you all!
Again, Thank you General Mills for inviting me along on the trip!
Questions for You!
- Have you ever given up caffeine completely?
- What is your favorite Cereal?
- What show (or book) are you currently obsessed with?
Jen H. says
1. I did the Advocate 24 day challenge which limits you to just BLACK coffee….to me that is just about as bad as giving up coffee completely. It did help me cut back on my ridiculous coffee obsession and it showed me how much cream/sugar I really DIDNT need in my coffee! That being said, I find enjoyment in my coffee and therefore will never quit completely 🙂
2. Ohhhh cereal….how I love thee. I find nothing greater than a cold bowl of cereal before a run or intense workout. I love Special K….all kinds! Also Kasha GoLean Crunch!!!
3. I don’t watch a lot of TV just because I am always on the go….but when I do sit down I religiously watch Food Network. There is no need for me to have any other stations on my tv besides FN!
Taralynn McNitt says
I had friends want me to do the Advocare with them, but I saw that you couldn’t have coffee and said NOPE! They have good shakes and energy drinks though! I LOVE my coffee and will never give it up, but hopefully cut back a bit.
I love thee as well! I like to eat it before a run too! Cheerios & bananas for the win!
I was all over the Food Network today. I don’t have cable so when I’m at Kyle’s, I T.V. hog! What is your favorite Food Network show?
Jen H. says
Girl don’t get me started on my favorite FN shows. I feel like I should be a spokesperson for them!!! I have a dream (bucket list) wish of having dinner with Ina Garden. She is my all-time favorite. I also am currently obsessed with Ree Drummond!!! Her food is magical and her/her family are adorable. Her ranch and country lifestyle are ideal to me. What are you favorite shows?
Taralynn McNitt says
Hahaha wouldn’t that be cool? Job title “Spokesperson for FN Shows” OMG ME TOO! I used to go to all her favorite spots in the Hamptons while I worked there. She has the most calming voice. I LOVE REE DRUMMOND as well. She’s so corny and scripted and I love every second of the lifestyle. I love Giada <3 & Trisha!
Linda @ The Fitty says
Wow, was that a buffet breakfast? I love that they even have almond milk, but I wonder what they have in terms of protein…they probably didn’t make anything cooked?
I can’t believe you came to Canada! But then again, I’m all the way in Toronto so it wasn’t like I could meet you in Winnipeg. I also very much admire you for waking up at 5 to workout. Did you run outdoors or indoors?
Taralynn McNitt says
Oh, they had all kinds of delicious proteins! Eggs, Yogurts, and more!
Canada was beautiful. I’ve been there a couple times, but only on the boarder.
I ran outside! The weather was wonderful.
Jenn says
I never really drink coffee personally (I think I can hear you fainting already) but I was a big soda drinker. Two a day at one point. Now I am down to one or two a week. Sometimes not even that often. I try and limit my sodas to certain meals (like tacos!) and when I get migraines. The caffeine helps relax the blood vessels. I found drinking more water helped with the caffeine headaches in the beginning.
My favorite cereal is Multi Grain Cheerios…and Lucky Charms.
Current shows I am obsessed with are Married At First Sight and Orange is the New Black. Oh and Last Week Tonight. Oh and The Time of My Life by Cecelia Ahern was really cute.
Taralynn McNitt says
Ha, Kyle doesn’t drink coffee & it’s crazy to me how someone can function. I’m actually jealous. Water definitely helps a bit.
YUM!!!! Those are the best!
Love how many shows you’re obsessed with. Sounds like me! i have a never ending list!
Debbie says
Those are beautiful photos
Taralynn McNitt says
Thank you!
Jessie @ The Acquired Sass says
1. Umm nope, never. No intentions of giving it up. I usually have a cup a day, and a half a pot on the weekends.
2. I really can’t remember the last time I had cereal. But I love Chocolate Chex, Multigrain Cheerios & Cinnamon Life.
3. I started watching Bloodlines on Netflix. Not quite hooked yet, but people keep promising me I will be. And I love Kyle Chandler, and needed some more of him after I finished watching Friday Night Lights.
Those Pumpkin Spice Cheerios sound delicious. I’ll definitely have to pick up a box of those once they hit the shelves.
Taralynn McNitt says
Hhaha you sound so much like me. I will NOT give it up completely, but TRYING to cut back.
Those are all some of my favorites. The cinnamon chex + pumpkin spice = heaven.
Bloodlines was good! I wasn’t hooked, but I watched it. I LOVE KYLE CHANDLER and he’s the reason I decided to watch the show.
Erin Michelle says
Yes!! I had the flu last year so I went without coffee for like 3 days, and then continued it for about 2 weeks! Somehow now I’m back up to my 3-4 cups a day though 😉
Favorite cereal is Honey Nut Cheerios, or the trader joes brand of the same! Not too healthy, not to junky!
I was obsessed with Stranger Things on Netflix when I first started watching it but I finished it so I’m back to Friends re runs
I love how your blog posts at including lots of pictures now BTW 🙂 fun to see!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi Erin!
I feel like coffee is the only thing I want when I’m sick. I need that warmth and boost of energy to help, and its so bad! I think that may be why I’ve been reaching for the cup lately. Pretty awesome that you went 2 weeks!
Honey Nut Cheerios is MY FAVE & I have a recipe coming up soon using the Honey Nut Cheerios! They are the only thing I can eat before a run too. Almond milk & bananas added!
& thank you so much! Taking photos and sharing them is one of my favorite parts of the blog!
Mackenzie says
What a cool experience. I feel like I don’t hear much about Canada beyond Niagara Falls, but I’m going to add it to the travel bucket list (mainly for that food, Good Lord!)!!! I am obsessed with your luggage- where is it from?
– I have never given up caffeine completely. I think very, very bad things would happen, so we won’t risk it 😉
– Favorite Cereal: Chocolate mini wheats little bites are my weakness
– Book: Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese
Thanks for the post <3
Taralynn McNitt says
Thanks Mackenzie!
I actually got that luggage at TJMAXX! 😉 That part of Canada was wonderful and Winnipeg is a great city!
hahaha I fear the same.
I’ve never had the chocolate ones.
xo xo thanks for reading!
Amanda K says
1. I did a challenge in high school with friends to see who could go the longest without caffeine and won after everyone else gave up about a month and a half in. It was rough and I went right back to my iced coffee and Diet Coke addiction afterwards!
2. I don’t eat cereal very often but every once in awhile I’ll get an intense craving for Reese’s puffs and eat them without milk as a snack.
3. Obsessed with OITNB!
If you liked Winnipeg, you should visit Banff and Jasper in Alberta sometime! It’s an absolutely beautiful area of Canada and there are lots of hikes and cute little towns. I love your picture of the lady bug, and all of the food you had on your trip looks super delicious!
Taralynn McNitt says
I never drank coffee in high school, just the occasional latte (with all the sugars lol) but coffee was everything in my first year of school.
OMG REESES PUFFS! SO GOOD 🙂 I keep them in my place for when I have a sweet tooth.
I stopped watching after the second season. I need to watch the rest!
OMG, I WANT TO VISIT SO BAD! It’s on my list of places, ESPECIALLY BANFF! I can’t handle all the gorgeous photos.
xo xo thank you for the kind words.
Dana says
I have a pretty strong coffee addiction as well (I love the flavor!), and two things that have help me cut down on my caffeine intake: a half caff mix and decaf. I drink half caff in the morning (I mix the beans myself) and have a decaf in the afternoon. Mind you, this was after I got myself off of the amount of regular I was drinking. I gradually cut down. It took about a month. Now I have a cup of full strength only once in a while.
I’m definitely a granola girl-any kind will do! I just finished up some banana nut Back to Nature, I like a big bowl of fruit, granola, and a little milk or yogurt. Those pumpkin spice Cheerios are definitely calling me though!
I am midway through Stranger Things. I’m an 80’s kid so I love love love it!
PS-your trip looked like so much fun! Definitely have a little blogger envy right now, it seems like such a cool thing to do.
Taralynn McNitt says
I just bought 8 O’clock half decaf coffee and it is pretty good! I think that will help in the afternoon & then maybe a decaf latte at night if I’m “needing” one.
Granola is SO GOOD. It’s hard for me to keep it in the house, especially the Nature Valley. The Pumpkin Spiced Cheerios are amazing. I’m going to buy like 30 boxes to last me all year round. PERFECT TOUCH OF SPICE.
I keep hearing all about it!
The trip was great! Very short, but so informative and fun!
Jessica says
I love the pictures you took! Especially the picture of the ladybug. Sounds like you had a great trip!
1. I haven’t given up caffeine, but I’ve tried. I was most miserable person for a few days haha, so I gave in. I’ve recently switched over to matcha green tea most days instead of coffee. I’m hoping that will help transition me to be less dependent on caffeine.
2. I don’t have a favorite cereal, but I binge on a certain kind of cereal for a couple of months and then switch it up. I’ve been sticking to cereals from Trader Joe’s.
3. I wish I could find a new show to be obsessed with. Hopefully this fall when I have time to watch tv.
Taralynn McNitt says
Thanks so much Jessica! That lady bug landed perfect timing.
I was miserable half a day when I gave it up once, so cutting it out is going to be a GRADUAL thing for me. Cutting down is a must. My body is so dependent on it, which stinks & all my fault.
Yes Trader Joe’s has great cereal. Ive been on a Tiny Toast kick!
I love shows during the cooler months!
xo
Evie says
What a lovely friend Becca is! And you’re making me want Cheerios now!
1. Have you ever given up caffeine completely?
I’ve had to cut down to just one cup before noon, otherwise I can’t sleep :/
2. What is your favorite Cereal?
Bran flakes or something high-fibre.
What show (or book) are you currently obsessed with?
3. Stranger Things! It’s incredible and deserves the hype.
http://evieintokyo.wordpress.com
Taralynn McNitt says
She’s the greatest & so are Cheerios! <3
It’s crazy that I can sleep right after having coffee. I’m going to try to do the noon thing as well.
Fiber one is really good! You should try that 🙂 one of my faves.
I keep hearing all about it! Might have to give that one a go!
Jan says
Winnipeg is my hometown! I don’t live there anymore but it’s super weird to see someone blog about it. I hope you had a good time; it’s a pretty complex and complicated place in terms of history and current socioeconomic struggle. Also at the Forks there’s these neat flood markers alongside that big tent-like thing you showed a photo of: they show where the water levels were during the first major flood in 1826 and then where the water came during the most recent major flood of 1997 (when I lived there!)
Taralynn McNitt says
Hey Jan!
So cool that you lived there! I wish I would have had more time to explore. Loved The Forks.
I read a lot about the history in an article while researching! Wish you were there to give me the ultimate tour!
xo
Emily B says
I love that you were in Winnipeg! I love about 2 hours from there right across the North Dakota border. My husband and I love love Winnipeg! Such a fun city to explore!
1. No and I never will! Lol. I am pretty good though about limiting my caffeine intake to no more than 2 times a day. I have 1-1.5 cups in the morning and then I might have some in the afternoon if I need it.
2. If I’m being naughty, I LOVE Reese’s Puffs. If I’m being a little healthier, Honey Bunches of Oats with Cinnamon Clusters. In my “skinny fat” stage of life I was convinced that cereal was healthy for me and I literally ate it for 2 meals a day. No I hardly eat it at all any more so it is definitely a special treat! It’s still one of my favorite foods though!
3. My hubs and I are obsessed with Arrow currently. We have limited cable so we don’t watch a whole lot of tv. But we love Arrow! And as for books, I am currently reading the new Harry Potter book & loving it!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi Em!
That is so cool! Winnipeg is go great 🙂 Such a fun escape.
I’m about to get on your caffeine level. 🙂
I used to think cereal was so unhealthy but I learned so much about whole grains and oats and now all I want is whole grain cheerios!
I may have to look into Arrow!!
xo
Lizzie says
I’m so glad you had a great time! I was living vicariously through your skydiving updates. I’ve wanted to do it for a while now, I just need a buddy to go with me cause I’ll definitely need that extra motivation to jump lol! Terrified of heights. I was wondering if I could have your help with a blog? I had sent you an email, but I’m not sure if it went into junk/spam. If you could help me out I would be so incredibly grateful! 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi Lizzie!
I can’t wait to share the video! It was so weird because I’m usually a nervous/anxious person when it comes to these things. I didn’t have ONE second of fear or anxiety. I was cool as a cucumber and I have no idea why. I’m blaming the Claredon D. haha
I get a lot of emails on the daily, so they get a little lost at sea. Did you use the same email as this comment? If so, I’ll see if I can find it!
xo
Lizzie says
Hahaha! I can not wait to see the video!!! I love watching the videos, gets me psyched to do it one day lol.
Yes I did!! ☺️ Thank you!!!
Taralynn McNitt says
I may have edit it a bit with a couple cuss words that came out of my mouth 😐 haha
Lizzie says
Hahaha! I could imagine!! I can’t wait to see the video ☺️
Also, would you mind replying to this comment letting me know when you’ve replied to the email? I worry that it’ll go to junk and I’ll miss it! Lol! Thank you so much again!
Nicole says
1. No! I have always been a caffeine consumer. I used to drink multiple glasses of Mt. Dew a day (I work where they have a free-refill fountain). Uhh, yeah, I know, TERRIBLE. I switched to coffee after cutting pop out completely. I can’t go a day without it!
2. Frosted Flakes are my absolute fave cereal. However, I only keep it around for when I’m really craving something sweet. Honey Nut Cheerios are delicious also 🙂
3. Currently obsessed with Pretty Little Liars. That’s terribly embarrassing, but I love it. Its so dramatic.
I’m a new visitor here, and I was pleased to know you’re originally from Iowa! I’m born & raised from Fairfield, Iowa & still reside here. I love reading your posts! Your trip looked like a blast!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi Nicole!
I’m so glad I don’t like the taste of Mountain Dew! I hear so many people talk about the addiction to it! ALSO, LOVE THAT YOU SAID “POP.” I instantly knew you were from the midwest.
Honey Nut Cheerios are my all time fave. Have you seen the Frosted Cheerios?! They’re so good…
Haha not embarrassing. I love Netflix binging that while I work during the day.
I used to go to Fairfield ALL the time. I’m from Ottumwa (I’m sure you know where that’s at if you’re from Fairfield) I miss Iowa and hope to visit soon.
Thank you for stopping by to read!
xo
Chandler says
1. Have you ever given up caffeine completely?
I loveeee coffee, but I try super hard not to drink it (or to very rarely drink it). I also avoid caffeinated teas, and I have maybe a can of pop per week (sometimes not even that). I get addicted to caffeine way too easily, and I can so relate to the headaches because that’s what happened to me on days I didn’t have a cup of coffee. I don’t want my body to be dependent on it, so I stick to water, caffeine free herbal teas, and KOMBUCHA. My favorite.
2. What is your favorite Cereal?
As weird as it sounds, my favorite cereal is Kellogg’s Cracklin’ Oat Bran. You must try it if you haven’t!
3. What show (or book) are you currently obsessed with?
I’m obsessed with Scandal! It’s not coming back until mid-season next year because Kerry Washington is pregnant, but it’s my favorite. I also work for a book publishing company, so I always have plenty of books to keep me busy! 😉
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi Chandler!
LOVE THAT YOU SAID POP! Are you from the midwest?!
Kombucha is my fave too. I have some waiting in my fridge for tonight.
Sounds like an interesting cereal lol “cracklin”
I always hear about scandal but never got into it! I may have to! My mom LOVES IT.
Chandler says
YES you absolutely have to get into Scandal. And I’m from the great land of Minnesota! We were neighbors growing up! 😉
Taralynn McNitt says
I will start the show!:) Midwest love <3
Jenn says
Have you ever given up caffeine completely? I keep trying but I’m such a failure at it. Right now I’m at 1 cup in the morning and then 1 decaf. But I sometimes *sneak* another cup in the afternoon. See – it’s *so* hard to do. 🙂
What is your favorite Cereal? I hardly ever eat cereal anymore. But that Pumpkin Spice Cheerios looks amazing! I do love most Cheerios. Growing up I loved Golden Grahams! 🙂
What show (or book) are you currently obsessed with? Just starting the new Harry Potter Cursed Child book.
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi Jenn!
I’m also a failure at it haha I’d like to get on your level and do the same. You don’t drink TOOO much, so sounds like you’re good!
THEY ARE SO GOOD. I cracked and opened my box this morning. GOLDEN GRAHAMS <3
I never got into the Harry Potters! I know so many people love them tho!
xo xo
Ashton Jury says
Wow! Your trip looks amazing! All of that food… Seriously I’m drooling! Especially those macrons, being 1/2 French I can be snobbish about them but they looked so tasty! I’m also 100% sure that I need that baguette candle! I have given up caffeine before and I think then it was easier (it was before my coffee obsession days) I gave up Dr. Pepper and it was hard at first, but I got over it. Fast forward a few years… and I really can’t go a day without an coffee, especially iced! I was going to try and give it up but the fact that Pumpkin is around the corner, and Starbucks will now be serving Almond milk that is so NOT HAPPENING!
Also I can’t wait to run to the store and pick up those pumpkin spice cheerios you had! I usually love something chocolaty, but I need those!
I am currently obsessed with Stranger Things! I saw that Becca had posted about it too, have you watched it yet?! It is amazing! Also my other favorite show in the world and I recommend to everyone is Parks & Rec!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi Ashton!
The trip was wonderful! You would have LOVED them. How cool were those candles?!!? I have been looking them up online. I only took a carry on, so I didn’t want to bring a ton of glass/stuff back. We ran into so much pottery that I wanted. I can’t believe starbucks is going to serve almond milk now! That is so great. I like it in my iced lattes (never hot almond milk)
They are so light and perfect for the pumpkin season approaching us in a few months!
I haven’t watched it yet! I’m behind lol I’m not a huge syfy person! Do you think I’d still like it? Parks & Rec is awesome!
Ashley says
I’ve been obsessed with the strawberry Cheerios so I can’t wait for the pumpkin spice ones! I have Celiac so I am a huge fan of General Mills for all of their GF cereal options. The photos from your trip are gorgeous!
Taralynn McNitt says
Yes i love those! I have them in my cabinet 🙂 I loved hearing about the transition into gluten free oats. I don’t have celiac or a gluten intolerance, but listening to their stories on the feedback they’ve received was touching. They had people sending in videos from them eating cheerios after years of celiacs and it was so fun to hear! & thanks so much! I just took them on my iPhone!
Tara says
Looks like it was a fun trip! All of your pictures are gorgeous! I have given up caffeine! I quit cold turkey! It was really hard at first, but once I adjusted, I don’t crave it. I went from drinking only diet coke all day to not drinking any pop at all! Now I will have a green tea some mornings and that is all the caffeine that I drink. Right now I’m drinking Spark if I need a burst of energy. But, I have tried tons of natural energy drinks and they all work better than pop. My favorite cereal right now is the apple cinnamon cheerios. I really want to try the pumpkin spice but have not seen it at the store yet. And, the show I’m obsessed with is Bachelor in Paradise. 🙂 I know it’s so cheesy, but I can’t quit watching!! I love Carly!

Hey Tara!
Definitely a fun trip! & thanks for the compliment. Those were all taken with my iPhone. I tried to quit cold turkey…didn’t go so well lol LOVE THAT YOU SAID POP!!! I never hear that down here. It’s always “soda.” haha. I have the apple cinnamon cheerios in my cabinet too. I have about ten boxes of cereal…lol I can’t stop watching either lol & carly is hilarious.

This post super made me want to go to Canda. It looks so beautiful, especially since I am surrounded by the drought-ridden Los Angeles haha.
Have you ever given up caffeine completely?
I have! I used to drink soda all the time in college and then gave that up and drank coffee and hot tea extremely often, but I started hating that I couldn’t be a fully functioning human without coffee. So I gave it up gradually. I started by drinking my coffee an hour after I woke up, did that for a week. Then the next week 2 hours, and so on. After I weaned myself off of it, I let myself have it a few times a week, but I never have it right when I wake up. Now I just have to give up candy…
What is your favorite Cereal?
I love Special K with strawberries, Honey Bunches of Oats with Cinnamon Clusters, and Honey Nut Cheerios. I am really excited to try these pumpkin cheerios. I try to only eat cereal once a week, I don’t see it as a treat, I just have a really obsessive personality with food. So if I have one bowl, I’ll have two and then I will get to a place where I am eating two bowls of cereal everyday. So, I have to limit myself.
What show (or book) are you currently obsessed with?
I just finished “Stranger Things” and loved it. I am not a big sci-fi person either, and it did have a big sci-fi element, but it also was like a mystery and fun 80s comedy at the same time. But, don’t watch it alone at night. I learned that the hard way.
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi Rachel!
Giving it up gradually is key. Cold turkey will kill me! Candy is another tough one lol It’s not ONLY for little kids.
Honey nut cheerios are my favorite and I have a recipe coming up with it! I think we all go for that second bowl 😉 I love eating my cereal in a mug for that reason!
I keep hearing about that show. I don’t like Syfy. Do you think I’d still like it?? I def won’t watch it alone! I’m a fraidy.

Glad you had such a great trip! I’m Canadian and last winter I went to Winnipeg and vowed never to go back (it was beyond cold!) but maybe a summer trip would be better haha.
All of the food looks INCREDIBLE! I just ate pizza and my stomach is hating me.
I feel ya with the coffee addiction. I’ve been trying to cut down the past few days and the headaches have been awful! They are not fun to get through, but you can do it 🙂
I am currently watching Mrs Browns Boys on Netflix. It’s hilarious! You should check it out.
As for reading, I am re-reading all the classics by Jane Austen and Charlotte Bronte!
Can’t wait to read about the rest of your trip 😀

I can’t imagine how cold it is in the winter! I am lucky to have southern weather. I love your SUMMER WEATHER & I’m sure you love my winter weather.
The food was pretty fresh and great. They really knew how to cook meat!
I will have to check that out! I started watching some weird movies while working today. I never really pay attention, I just need background sound!

Fun and interesting post, Taralynn – what a cool opportunity from General Mills!
I have NOT given up caffeine completely, sadly. I am always craving coconut milk chai lattes and lots of caffeinated teas! I’m also working at giving up soda entirely…it’s hard.
When I’m feeling like an adult, my favorite cereal is Honey Nut Cheerios. Otherwise, FRUIT LOOPS all the way! …they’re basically rainbow Cheerios, right?
I just finished Stranger Things on Netflix and it’s so cool! I also want to start watching House of Cards, I’ve heard it’s good and I have a mega crush on Kevin Spacey.
Hope you have a great week!
Cheers,
Ariel
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi Ariel!
Such a fun opportunity.
Coconut milk lattes <3 so good. I never crave pop, but do crave coffee!
Lol they actually have fruity cheerios!
house of cards is so good!!!!!! Kevin spacey is amazing in that.

Have you ever given up caffeine completely?
No way! I’m not big on hot coffee but I cannot live without my iced coffee or a diet coke at least a couple times a week. I know it’s not good for me, but I try to not drink caffeine every single day. Also try to drink tons of water as if it woud cancel it out 😉
What is your favorite Cereal?
I have SO many favorite cereals! I really am not a fan of most breakfast food, but I love cereal. My favorites probably are any kind of Cheerios, Honey Bunches of Oats with almonds, or the Special K with Almonds and Vanilla Yogurt bites.
What show (or book) are you currently obsessed with?
I am currently obsessed with Grey’s Anatomy. My boss got me hooked on it and I just watched 11 seasons on Netlix in like two months. LOVE IT!!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi Katie!
Yes I’m a believe in the “cancels out” thing with water! I do the same.
I love all types of Cheerios! & Have tons of favorites like you.
I’ve never watched it really! just bits & pieces. I thought about it! Good daytime show!

Great article Taralynn. You certainly did justice for Winnipeg in your article. I am glad you had fun and learnt alot on our family farm last week. We thought the food was wonderful that day as well. I have never followed a blogger but I am going to give it a shot. Will check out the other girls as well that travelled with you.
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi Sandy!
It means so much to me that you stopped by my blog! I can’t wait to share the rest of my photos of your farm and my experience soon. Thank you for such a wonderful time and I enjoyed chatting with you! You will love all the other blogs as well. I hope to visit Winnipeg again soon! Give Case a good pet for me!

Thanks Gina!
It was so great meeting you as well! THOSE MACARONS…General Mills should start selling those in stores!
xo!

It looks like you had a trip of a lifetime! Looking forward to hearing more about what you learned and about the changes General Mills is taking!
* I have given up soda (2 years and going strong) but could never give up coffee. I have had to cut back on my regular coffee, so in the afternoons/evenings I do drink decaf.
* Hmm…favorite cereal….It’s not often that I eat cereal, but I sure do love and miss eating Honey Nut Cheerios – I may have to go buy some now :p
* I’ve been obsessed with Game of Thrones & Unreal (Lifetime), but now that they are over till next season, I need to find a new show (or book) to get hooked on!
Taralynn McNitt says
It was such a fun trip and I’m so excited to share all the changes!
I gave up pop (don’t crave it) but trying to give up the afternoon coffee! I will start drinking decaf like you!
Those are my favorite!!!
Unreal is so funny!

Such a lovely recap lady. All your photos are gorgeous — I’m literally drooling over all the food (again). So great to meet you and hang for a bit. Stop by Richmond next time you’re on your way to DC. I’ll show you around. 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
Thanks Brittany!!
I wrote out a grocery list inspired by our food from the trip this morning. I can’t wait to recreate some of the meals and I’m REALLY excited about your hummus brownies! It was great meeting you as well and I will most definitely take you up on the Richmond tour! Let me know if you’re ever in Charlotte!

Myriam says
1) I started drinking decaff years ago, I don’t feel the difference so I prefer not to put caffeine inside my body! (you’re going to hate me haha)
2) One they sell here in Carrefour with tones of Fiber, very similar to Special K but better 😀
3) Show: Orphan Black. Book: it’s a Spanish one and not famous so you won’t know it, it’s an erotic series (3 books, I’m in te 2nd) based on a girl who starts a relationship with 2 guys (but they all agree!)
Taralynn McNitt says
I think that is awesome that you do that. I am going to try to do the “decaf” when I’m craving it in the afternoon. It could be a placebo experiment lol.
Never heard of that!
Sounds so interesting lol!I’ve heard Orphan Black is good!!

Myriam says
I wanted to write longer but I was at work and sometimes I’m not sure if I actually left the reply because it doesn’t give me any confirmation (other times I do see that my comment has to be approved bla bla but this time I didn’t). At least I wanted to give more details about the “sordid” book or add a “lol” hahaha. Have a nice day and thanks for always replying, you’re lovely ^^ PS: Good luch with the decaf experiment! maybe you could ask your bf to give you decaf sometimes without telling you so that you see if the placebo works 😛
Taralynn McNitt says
That is a great idea!:) & thanks for coming back to comment! XO XO
Have a great day Myriam!

omg, carrotsncake was the first lifestyle blog (possible first blog at all!) I ever followed. I’ve been dedicated to superhealthykids since my kid was born 4 years ago. such fun ideas for the whole family. and how do we live without fit bottom girls?! i’ll have to check out the other blogs.
1. I have a soda addiction. diet dr pepper mostly. I get aspartame headaches but I don’t appear to have a caffeine addiction. I can go days without soda and not have a reaction. and I don’t drink coffee. ever. so I think I can say caffeine is not one of my issues. somehow.
2. peanut butter cap ‘n’ crunch used to be my fave, but they changed the recipe and it’s just not right anymore. so I moved onto cinnamon toast crunch. in all honesty, I haven’t eaten cereal on a regular basis in about 20 years so I’m still reflecting back to my childhood with these.
3. with the above mentioned 4 year old I don’t have much time for tv. I do watch pretty little liars when I remember to watch the dvr recording. I dvr’ed the fx oj simpson series way back when I watched a few eps over the past couple months. very good. I did manage to binge watch scream queens last fall and I’m looking forward to the new season.
Taralynn McNitt says
The other blogs are great too! I recommend them all 🙂
1. Lots of caffeine in those sodas too! Have you thought about switching to aspartame free/organic sodas?
2. YUM! Cinnamon Toast crunch is the best! Great on ice cream (but you didn’t hear that from me)
I love PLL!:) Haven’t watched it in a year though! Scream queens is so good! WHEN IS THE NEW SEASON! LOVE EMMA ROBERTS !
Anna says
1. I rarely drink caffeine, but when I do, I absolutely notice the next day when I don’t have any. Those headaches are a KILLER.
2. I am a kid at heart so Cinnamon Toast Crunch is probably my favorite haha. Next is apple cinnamon Cheerios. Maybe I just really love cinnamon 🙂
3. OMG I started Stranger Things on Netflix last night on a whim, and I watched almost the entire season in one sitting. I was not proud of this, but daaaang it is just so weird that I couldn’t stop watching.
Winnipeg is close to my hometown of Grand Forks in ND so I have made the adventure up there a few times. It is a really great place! There is so much to do and see! I’m glad you had such a fun trip 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
The withdrawals are insane!
Those are two great cereals and perfect when mixed together!
Ok…so is it good even if you don’t like syfy?!?!
SO FUN! I’ve been to Grand Forks before 🙂 long time ago though!
xo
Anna says
Whaaaat? That’s crazy that you’ve been to GF! Most people have never heard of it and just ask me if we have giant fancy forks there ??lol! And yes I am NOT a syfy fan and this show still pulled me right in. I finished it in two days and want more episodes so bad!
Taralynn McNitt says
My brother had a baseball tournament there years ago when his team was one run away from the world series! We spent two weeks there! It’s the first place I ever tried a chocolate covered potato chip!
I’ll start that show then!
xo
Anna says
Ahhhh Chippers, yes!! Best thing we offer around here for sure 🙂
I hope you like Stranger Things. I think it’s just so different and interesting!
Kit says
I know Winnipeg isn’t that different from the midwest, but did you get any culture shock or observations about Canada compared to the US?
1) I tried a few yrs ago when I read that eating an apple could make you feel more awake than coffee. There’s lying, and then there’s just being hurtful.
2) Not a cereal person, but your General Mills breakfast looked good!
3) Loving Switched at Birth and The Fosters right now on TV.
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi Kit!
I really didn’t! I just found tons of cool products and restaurants I wanted to try! Everything was pretty similar:) I loved how clean and colorful Winnipeg was!
1. I’ve actually heard that, but it didn’t work for me lol Maybe if I cut caffeine back MORE…
2. It was good 🙂
3. Love the Fosters! Maia Mitchell is adorable!
