Baked Italian Style Blooming Onions
I always end up being the one to cook and prepare all the foods during football games. My boyfriend plans huge football parties , but forgets about the important part…the food! I make sure to keep the foods simple and delicious. I also like to provide healthier options of popular football foods. This year for the Superbowl, I am going to make one of my favorite appetizers, the blooming onion. I’m going to skip the fryer and keep it healthy. The fryer gives the blooming onion most of it’s unique flavor, so I decided to use Italian bread crumbs to give my baked onions that extra boost of flavor. This recipe is super easy and has very few ingredients. They also taste great! You can easily make this recipe gluten free by using gluten free breadcrumbs and adding italian seasoning to the mixture.
INGREDIENTS
- 4 Medium Sized Sweet Onions
- 4-5 Large Eggs
- 1 1/2 Cups Milk
- 2 Cups Italian Bread Crumbs
- Black Pepper
DIRECTIONS
-
Set all your ingredients out and preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
-
Slice the top off of the onion and peel. Leave the bottom intact. Flip the chopped side down and slice the onion around the bottom. Make sure to not cut all the way to the bottom or it will fall apart.
-
Flip the onion back over and spread out the slices. Slice any additional large pieces.
-
Whisk together the milk and eggs.
-
Place the onion in the milk and egg mixture.
-
Let the onion soak 3-5 minutes.
-
Coat the onion in the breadcrumbs. I added several coats to these.
-
Place the onions in a greased baking dish and sprinkle black pepper over the top.
-
Bake for 45-50 minutes. The edges will be lightly brown and the onions will be sweet and soft.
-
Let the onions cool for about ten minutes and then serve with your favorite dipping sauce. They are really good with a spicy yogurt dip or a sweet chili sauce.
-
Enjoy!

LOVE this healthy version of the bloomin’ onion – one of my favorite guilty pleasures just turned good! 🙂
I actually met my best friend back in college while watching the Superbowl at a dorm party together. We usually try to connect or do something fun on the day of together to celebrate, as well as enjoy the game!

YUM! I’m going to have to try this one!!
I usually make chili for football parties… my boyfriend makes a meat-only skyline version, and I make a bean-and-meat version… add shredded cheese, plain green yogurt, and chopped scallion on the side (and sometimes rice) and everyone can make a bowl as healthy or unhealthy as they’d like. It’s also a more substantial option among a bunch of other snacks.
