Grandpa’s Oatmeal Gumdrop Cookies
PREP TIME: 12 minutes
COOK TIME: 25 minutes
SERVES: 28-30 Cookies
This recipe is special to me. My grandpa used to bake for us kids all the time and that is why I love baking so much. These gumdrop cookies were his specialty. They bring me so much comfort along with good memories. They’re so soft, chewy, and delicious. They are perfect for the holidays and the guest will be begging you for the recipe.
You can make these cookies for almost any holiday. Make them for valentines day with red and purple gumdrops!
Gather your ingredients
INGREDIENTS
- 1 1/4 Cups All-Purpose Flour
- 1 1/2 Cups Old-Fashioned Oats
- 1 Teaspoon Baking Soda
- 1 Teaspoon Baking Powder
- 1/2 Tablespoon Ground Cinnamon
- 1/2 Teaspoon salt
- 1/2 Cup Butter, Unsalted
- 1 1/4 Cups Packed Light Brown Sugar
- 1 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract
- 1 Large Egg
- 1 (15 ounce) Bag Gumdrops
Slice all the gumdrops in half. *If you do not like the taste of black licorice, make sure to remove the purple ones. I, however, LOVE the taste of black licorice.
In an electric mixer, cream together the butter and brown sugar on medium speed.
Slowly, beat in the egg and vanilla for 30 seconds.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, oats, baking soda, cinnamon, and baking powder.
Gradually add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients and combine.
Throw in the gumdrops.
Stir on slow speed until combined.
Place heaping tablespoon sized drops of dough two inches apart on a baking sheet.
Bake 8-11 minutes at 350 degrees. The centers should be soft and the outsides should be lightly brown when they are done.
Remove from the pan and set them aside to cool for 10-20 minutes.

1. My mom always makes my grandma’s pumpkin roll for Thanksgiving. This year, (after 28 yrs) I helped her make them & actually saw the whole process. My other grandma has taught me how to make her pizelles & Italian knot cookies
2. I like really any kind of cookie, just no raisins!
3. No cookies for Santa but hopefully once my husband & I have children, we’ll start that tradition
These look wonderful! Thanks for the recipe & Merry Christmas!
Taralynn McNitt says
That is so exciting and it sounds delicious. I would love to learn how to make pizelles! I might have to buy a maker. I also want to learn how to make homemade canolis. Thats actually on my bucket list!
2. I’ll eat any cookie too!
3. You’ll have to start the tradition 😉

These sound so yummy! I am definitely going to try.
My favorite cookies of all time are white chocolate macadamia, and I definitely make cookies on Christmas Eve but they end up being for me and not Santa 🙂 I am going to post 12 days of Christmas cookie recipes leading up to Christmas on my blog!
Taralynn McNitt says
Thank you! They are definitely my favorite.
White chocolate macadamia are to die for! I actually made a healthier version last year and they were just as good! I’m excited to see your cookie post!!
Linda @ The Fitty says
I’m fairly certain that I can use this to make a microwave muffin too 🙂

That sounds interesting!

Gum drops in cookies? That’s a new one to me!
1. Both of my grandmas always made sure snicker Apple salad was on the table when I came to visit. One grandma made it with homemade whipped cream and the other used cool whip and vanilla pudding. They knew the way to my heart 🙂
2. I really like a good old chocolate chip cookie but I do have a recipe for white chocolate like macadamia nut cookies that is pretty stellar!
3. Nope. I honestly don’t even remember doing it as a kid! Though I am sure I did..
Taralynn McNitt says
So so so good!
1. I love snicker apple salad. My aunt used to make it at family picnics. I actually have the recipes up on my blog! I bet homemade whipped cream is amazing in it.
2. Those are both amazing cookies!
3. Lol, I was CRAZY for Christmas and my parents went all out. They’d eat some of the cookies, leave me notes, footprints, and make it look like the reindeer ate the carrots I left for them lol

My grandma passed down her chocolate chip cookie recipe, and since turning vegan over the summer.. I’m trying to recreate it but nothing could beat hers! My favorite cookie flavor is either sugar or peanut butter. My family used to leave out cookies, but now since my sister and I are grown we don’t anymore. I love reading your blog!
Taralynn McNitt says
Sugar cookies are amazing with lemon! I’m actually making white chocolate lemon cookies today! I don’t leave them out anymore, BUT I still make them and excited to carry on the traditions with my future family 🙂

My Nana always makes Italian cookies and red wine cooks over the holidays. So delicious. We used them for our wedding instead of cake and they were a big hit 🙂

I love using recipes that have been passed down in the family. My grandmas sugar cookie recipe is one of my all time favorites. I make them every Christmas!
My favorite cookie flavor is chocolate chip or oatmeal raisin. Iced oatmeal raisin cookies are even better 😉
I’m surprised I never used to leave cookies for Santa as a kid! I do remember sprinkling “reindeer food” in my front yard on Christmas Eve as a kid. I was always so excited for that. Lol
Taralynn McNitt says
Thank you! I have many more!!
It is such a unique and delicious combo! I bet those sugar cookies are amazing. I make them as well 🙂
I love walnut and raisin oatmeal cookies!
Lol I used to leave reindeer food and my mom used to eat them to make it look like the reindeer did. But, leaving cookies and milk for santa was my favorite thing in the entire world. I’d make over 100 cookies, but pick out my favorite five for him!
Jessie @ The Acquired Sass says
1. Yessss. An oatmeal cookie recipe that is still my favorite cookie in general to this day! I shared it on my blog last week actually.
2. I love oatmeal cookies. But hard to beat a fresh from the oven chocolate chip cookie.
3. No more leaving cookies for Santa, but I used to love doing that.
Taralynn McNitt says
That is awesome!! 🙂
Any cookie fresh from the oven has all of my heart!
Lol me too 🙂 But I will make my kids do it!

I made these yesterday and they are SO tasty! I am a foster care case manager and always cook up a bunch of treats for my foster families. I made these to add to it this year and I think they are going to love them!
Taralynn McNitt says
That is so great! You are such a wonderful person:) I hope they love them. God Bless! xo

This might be a silly question, but are spice drops and gum drops the same thing? I was going to the store to get them and only saw spice drops and didn’t know if they were the same so I chickened out haha
Taralynn McNitt says
If they look the same they are probably the same thing 🙂 I’d consider these spice drops!
Jeanine says
Thanks! Haha I guess I’ll find out after I bake them!

These were great

If you aren’t crazy about spiced gum drops, you can use fruit gum drops. They are sometimes had to find, so a substitute is fruit slices. You will have to chop them more. To keep the bits from sticking together, roll them in a little granulated sugar.
