Let’s Catch Up: ON EVERYTHING.

IMG_0881Good Morning Everyone!

It’s been a week since I’ve posted a recap. I’ve been running around all week going here and there! It doesn’t look like it’s going to slow down anytime soon. Luckily, I have this morning time to relax and recap for you guys before I get up and around for the day. I was actually up at 4:15 this morning so I could fit this post in. I’ve been having a hard couple of days with poison sumac all over my body. It makes it harder for me to get everything I need to do done, but I’m trying my best. These steroids have me looking pretty cute and the constant itchy feeling is killing me inside. I contemplated on sharing a couple photos from the hospital, but they are too embarrassing, so I’m keeping those to myself. Turns out, I’m pretty dang allergic to the stuff. (more about that later)

Around eight this morning, I headed to the kitchen to make some coffee and breakfast. I made two eggs over easy and two slices of Applegate bacon.

The pups were so dang cute this morning. I made Grumples a little bed by the door so he can look out. Tino sits up at the top of the couch so he can also look out too. When I headed over there, Tino leaned over and gave Grumples a huge smooch! Luckily, I had my snap chat out!

It was madness. I have more to get done today too.IMG_0167

I love my Erin Condren stickers on the packages!

12325400_951901511523092_874526055_nFriday morning, I ran three 10 minute miles on the treadmill at an elevation and then turned it down to a low speed and walked for about eighteen minutes at an elevation with five-pound hand weights.IMG_0154I was excited to workout in my new outfit from Satva. The clothes are super cute and incredibly soft!itPicMonkey CollageExcuse my morning “no make-up, no hair style” look. They sent me over adorable yoga/running style pants with fun cut outs at the bottom. Those cut-outs are so in right now! They also sent me over a fun patterned tank top with a built in bra and cross cutoutsIMG_0165They also sent me a code for my readers: satva1 -the code is for 20% your next order! All of their items are organic and you can read their story here! The items are made from eco-friendly cotton and non-GMO bio-ingredients. So much love for this lil guy.

Toast in Dilworth. I ordered two eggs over easy, wheat toast, bacon, and fruit. Everything was delicious!

I found the cutest little stocking at Home Depot that reminded me of Grumples.

After breakfast, we headed to Home Depot to pick up yard tools, cleaning supplies, firewood, and more!

12358389_951901278189782_665212_n IMG_0221

We decided to pick up the dogs so they could run around the backyard while we cleared everything.

IMG_0309 IMG_0311 IMG_0314 IMG_0321

We tried to get a picture with the dogs but it was a struggle. We finally got one…KINDA.

I spent hours raking up leaves with Anthony, digging out tree stubs, burning leaves, bagging leaves, cutting barb wire off the fence, and ripping up roots and weeds. I was sure we’d dig up a dead body somewhere in there because we dug up about six pairs of shoes.

His fur makes him look so fluffy! He’s due for a cut soon.

Someone actually called the fire department because they saw smoke coming from the back of the house. No one has lived in the house for over a year, so they probably thought there was a fire. The fireman came to the back of the house and started cracking up when he saw our little fire pit.

We headed over to my parents for the Hawkeyes game. I love my parents christmas decorations!

It was such a good game, and I’m so sad they lost. They played their hearts out though! I’m excited to see them play in the Rose bowl!

I spent Sunday cooking away! I have some of the recipes posted already, but will post the others later. Above is a crockpot cheese dip with hot peppers, bacon, and sausage!

Grandpas Gumdrop Cookies & Bacon Wrapped Meatballs!IMG_0787

I’ll post the Baklava recipe later! It was sooooooo good!

I made some pineapple glazed ham!

And the best cheesy biscuits and gravy!

My poison ivy outbreak started on Sunday night. There was just a spot on my face and a couple spots on my arm. At first, I thought it was just bug bites.  I stopped at CVS to pick up some calamine lotion and Ibuprofen.

Monday morning breakfast: almonds, chocolate raisins, Greek yogurt with banana, and a bowl of cherries.

This is why running outside is so much better than the treadmill!

Even though I had a fantastic run, I shouldn’t have done it. I think the run and the hot shower spread the poison ivy all over.

Tuesday morning, woke up with it all over my body. My face was/and still is blistered and red. My eyes were almost glued shut on Wednesday and I couldn’t wait any longer. I had to go to the hospital. They got me in there right away because I had it in my lungs and my airways were starting to close and I also had a fever of 101.4. They quickly gave me a a Benadryl shot and a shot of steroids. They kept me under watch until the labored breathing went away and my temperature went down.

12351118_951900411523202_2041004844_n 12358343_951900594856517_1506958266_n

Yesterday morning, I headed over to pick up my prescriptions and then relaxed a bit with the pups. I was in so much pain.

It got better throughout the day. I decided to drive out to my parents house to let the dogs run around and play.

PicMonkey Collajge

I feel so bad when I can’t go out and walk with them, so I like to let them just run and play to get all their energy out. They are the cutest!

I didn’t feel like cooking dinner so I bought soup, juice, watermelon, and a salad at Harris Teeter.

I also bought some lottery tickets 🙂

I was hoping I could run today, but doesn’t look like thats going to happen! I’m hoping it gets better by tonight!

I just relaxed last night editing photos and writing up the recipes!

Now, I’m off to go get ready for the day! So much to do and so little time!

  1. Have you ever had poison ivy?
  2. What is a recipe you’d like me to make?
  3. What is your go-to workout outfit?

A quick heads up that poison ivy can spread in dogs fur, but as it’s an oil you can make sure not to get it by washing yourself and the dogs with dish detergent if you think you touched it!

    Wishing you a speedy recovery

    Hey Taralynn,

I just wanted to mention, if you have not already, make sure you wash your pups and their beds. I am super allergic to poison ivy and get it from my sweet cuddle bug puppies. If your dogs got it oil on their fur they can be re-exposing you to it! I apologize if someone already said this in the other comments, or your dr already told you. I was reading through to see if someone had but I don’t have time to read them all! lol. I hope you get over it soon! I get it every summer even if I am super careful 🙁

It’s hard to focus on work, school, and getting things done when you have roommates. You feel as if you’re always trying to go out and do things with them, talk, or easily get distracted, so I feel ya! This way, I have some time to myself and my own office. It’s nice 🙂 Especially since I’ve been living with people my entire life.

I got poison ivy once and I was on steroids for a month. If you find the calamine lotion too runny try Pinxav. It’s a lot thicker and has the same active ingredient (MgO), however it will still stain clothes and is technically a diaper rash cream, but it helped me a lot. I hope you feel better asap!

I’m looking forward to trying out some new vegetarian recipes 🙂 I recently became one and enjoy experimenting around.

Happy Friday Taralynn! I’ve never had poison ivy, but it sounds awful! I’m glad you’re feeling better. I guess it would be fun to see some more soup recipes on here. I loveeee soup, and it’s fantastic winter food. My go-to workout outfit really depends on the weather! I live in Minnesota, so it’s freezing up here a lot of the year. I am actually very lucky to say I haven’t had poison ivy before and thats weird because I am always walking out in the woods and riding on a fourwheeler and being in places I am sure are filled with ivy but maybe I am not allergic to it. I have only found one thing I am allergic to and thats a type of medicine. But I hope you feel better soon it sounds serious you must be higly allergic.

I have a weakness for pancakes right now and I am planning on starting a fitness page on facebook for me and a few friends to get back on track with our health in Jan. I would love to be able to still eat pancakes but a healthier version do you have any ideas?

When I work out I like to wear lose shirts and thin shirts and most of the time I go to cut off sleeve shirts and yoga pants I like to feel comfortable and be in cooler clothes. lol

Yes you are so lucky. It’s the worse and it seems like mine isn’t getting any better. My dad and I are both very allergic, but I’m trying to tough it out.

Hi Taralynn! I have never gotten poison ivy that bad ,but know people who do have bad reactions to it,it is horrible and I hope it goes away fast for you. I have really liked all of your recipes that I’ve tried! Do you have any tips on how to use baking stevia in a cake recipe? When I use it in my chocolate cake recipe it doesn’t rise and turns out kind of gummy. In the cake recipe I use g.f. flour too, wondering if that is the problem. For a workout outfit I just recently bought running tights and absolutely love them! Makes my old windpants feel like garbage bags lol! I hope you have a Merry Christmas and a Healthy New Year!

      Hi Misty!

You’re lucky. It’s a pain. My dad and I are both pretty dang allergic to it. I’ve been on steroids for days and it is just getting worse.

When I’m baking cake, I use the big bags of stevia instead of the little packets 🙂 It makes a huge difference. The gluten free flour tend to make things much more gummier. When I make banana bread with gluten free flour, it’s always gummy and same with muffins.

I hope you have a merry Christmas too!

I am very allergic to poison ivy. I used to get shots made with poison ivy to build my immunity. Try putting some activated charcoal on it. They are capsules you can get at a vitamin store. Just make a paste with a little water and the open capsule. Beware…it’s messy and wear black.

I love home renovations! We did it on both our houses and it’s so much fun watching your house transform. If you haven’t looked at these websites yet you should check them out (Houzz.com and Country Living). Both have great links, photos, and places to purchase items for renovations.

    1. I had poison ivy a few years ago but nothing to bad; however, when we moved to OK I got Chiggers (little mites that live in the weeds here) while we were working on our horse pasture. They make you break out really bad and are super itchy. I had to go to ER because I had a allergic reaction to them. I had to use chigger killer lotion (pyrethrin) and was still extremely itchy for about a week or two after. My saving grace was prescription strength lidocaine lotion.

    2. If you haven’t tried them yet, you should try Cheddar Bacon Ranch Bread Pulls. They are super easy to make and are great for football parties. I like the version from The Plain Chicken blog.

    3. My go to workout outfit is my Athena Capri and my old t-shirt that I turned into a workout shirt. It says on the back ‘Rise and rise again until lambs become lions’. It’s a nice reminder to how far I have come in my training. I have been training for my first bodybuilding competition (bikini), and am so happy about how much stronger I have gotten over the past few months.

      1. Ew. I used to get chiggers in Iowa all the time! We would sit on the grass and have them all over. You have to paint over the bites with fingernail polish! I didn’t realize you could have an allergic reaction to them!

      2. YUM! That sounds so good!

      3. I love all of the Athena products and I always use my old T-shirts for working out! Congrats on training and all the progress! I couldn’t do it, so keep up the dedication! xo

It’s really hard to find good deals for flipping/fixer uppers in charlotte because everything is going so fast with all the investors in the area. Anything from Uptown, south boulevard, dilworth and south park are all getting bought and flipped. A lot of the owners are actually holding onto the properties too. 1.yes! I used to get poison ivy all of the time when I was younger! My dad is a landscaper and I always caught it from him… the worst was when it would get in between my toes! Ouch!

Do not even think about running until your poison ivy is gone!!! Raising your body temperature aggravates it/ my husband got it one time and he works in a hot environment, so he didn’t have a choice, but his seriously took a month to clear up.

I haven’t since. I hate not being able to run, but I’m pretty medicated up, so it wouldn’t be a good run anyways. I just can’t wait until its all gone! I hope it clears up before a month 🙁 – at least on my face !

congratulations on your new place! Im looking to buy next year but the idea of building and renovating by myself at 25 is a bit terrifying. I had no idea poison ivy could be that bad, we don’t have it in Australia, I hope you feel better soon. I love reading your blog all year around but especially at Christmas time your holiday spirit is contagious 🙂

    Hey Taralynn!
    1. I’ve never had it but my Dad is really sensitive to it, he uses Fels-Naptha soap whenever he even sees it and that does the trick.
    2. Souffle, I can never make it work
    3. Big tshirt and capris spandex

Hope you feel better soon! And I can’t wait to see what you do with the house!

    Hey Taralynn
    1. I actually don’t get poison ivy but my Dad gets it horribly. He uses Fels-Naptha soap after he even gets near the stuff and that gets rid of the oils from the leaves.
    2. Souffle’s, I can never get them to work for me
    3. A big T-shirt and compression capris
I hope you get better, so sorry about the hospital that’s never fun! Can’t wait to see what you do with the house!

I love that you bought a fixer-upper! I love the property brothers and all those HGTV renovation shows. My parents have managed to buy a couple fixer uppers, fix them, and then rent them out to tenants and its the best! The tenants essentially pay the mortgage and the neighborhood looks better because the house finally gets the care it deserves. Have you ever seen Rehab Addict?

I love the HGTV shows too! Nick and I watch them all the time. Nick is obsessed with the fixer uppers and renting them out. He fixed up a place a year ago and has and a renter living in it for a while. This one is going to be ours though.

Your poison ivy sounds like a nightmare!! I’m glad you’re feeling better. I’ve never had it. I took pictures standing in the middle of it and didn’t get it! But, cedar does that same thing to me and will spread into my lungs. My mom figured that out when I was a baby and we had a real Christmas tree. The tree had to go quickly! LOL

Recipe request – I am supposed to bring some kind of chicken dip to a family Christmas next Saturday, but I have never made one and there are a million recipes online, so I don’t know which one to use….I want it to be good!

I hate it so much 🙁 I had no idea people could be allergic to cedar! I bet that is a tough one.

Congrats on the new house. I can’t wait to see the projects that y’all do! I love the inspiration board. I’m building a new house right now and was so overwhelmed with picking out all the colors, granite, flooring, etc., but luckily my hubby and I were pretty much in agreement on most things! That makes it so much easier!

Sorry about the poison ivy! Ouch! I’ve never had that, but I’ve had poison oak and that was not fun!

Also I had a question for you. There’s a chance I’m moving from New York for a job in Winston Salem(looking to move btwn Winston Salem and Charlotte) in the next month (fingers crossed!) and I know you’ve been to sooo many restaurants in Charlotte, if you had to choose- what restaurant would you recommend trying out first?! I’m a big foodie and I’ve been researching but figured I’d ask a pro! Haha

Grumples and Tino are too cute! I can’t wait to get a dog with my boyfriend. Do you have any recommendations about how you chose the right dog for you (as a couple) and sharing responsibilities (day-to-day and financially)?

Congratulations about the house, I must’ve missed that post. Sorry to hear about the poison ivy, I’ve never gotten poison ivy before, but my dad is highly allergic so I hope I never get it. I’d love you to make peppermint anything (cookies, bark, coffee, or something else with peppermint in it). Thanks!

My go to workout outfit is a t-shirt and running pants/leggings. Some days I wear my stuff while running errands so I can jump right into my routine when I get home, to prevent me from procrastinating the workout. I love the updates, thanks for being such an inspirational blogger (you inspired me to seek help for my eating disorder) and remind me that life is one big adventure if you don’t let monsters keep you trapped in your mind. You’re absolutely the best Taralynn. 🙂

I love the pups to death. Grumples is my responsibility and I pay all of his vet bills, food, etc. Tino is also my responsibility, but Nick buys all his food/vet bills. He stays with Nick most of the time, but when Nick is working a lot, I take him. I always buy Tino food, treats, toys, collars etc and Nick does the same with Grumples. We don’t really have a set of rules, but we just do what is convenient. Just make sure you talk about what would happen if you guys were to break up…it can be pretty sad. If you guys live together, I’m sure it’ll be easier.

You’re so lucky to have never gotten it! My dad is also very allergic!

I also wear the tshirt/running pants!

I’m so happy you’ve taken control over your E.D. and it’s 100% worth it! Always a battle, but it gets easier and easier. Thank you so much for the kind words!!! xo xo

you bought a house? congratulations, that’s awesome! looks like quite a project. good thing you are both handy and crafty. that will save a ton of money.

sorry about the poison ivy. that’s awful! no, I have never had it. I can’t even remember what it looks like, but I have been around it a couple times and random lake houses or state parks.

I’m not sure what I’d like you to make. you make some great looking stuff! I pin a lot of it for future reference. I have some salmon in the freezer and plan on making your salmon dish. the baked salmon with tomatoes? what’s your favorite guilty pleasure meal? you should make that while you’re recovering.

I work out in old t-shirts and exercise shorts or pants. nothing fancy. I do plan to update my workout wardrobe when I hit a certain weight loss milestone.

And thank you, you’re so lucky you’ve never had it. This is the worst it’s ever been for me 🙁

Ah I just love those pups! I swear it must be a thing with pit bulls, but they are the CUDDLIEST. That picture of him resting his head right on your shoulder reminded me exactly of what my pups do! SO sweet! 🙂
As for poison ivy, luckily I’ve never had it that bad! Yikes, hope you get better ASAP. And a good recipe to try would be zucchini noodles! I’ve been experimenting a lot lately with my “veggitti” (couldn’t they come up with a better name?) But I’ve got my boyfriend HOOKED on pesto zucchini with chicken. It is so good, and such a quick meal, too! It’s perfect for when we’ve ate allllllll the wings and beers watching football, and I need a few healthy meals to bounce back! I wish I had a good go to workout outfit. Right now I have to make it to the gym every morning at 5, so usually I sleep in my workout gear (tshirt and running pants) and get out the door as fast as possible! So excited to see more updates on your house. I’ve always wanted to do a fixer upper. Definitely post progress pictures! Good luck!

    1. No I havn’t luckily! I had no idea it could be so severe. I hope you’re feeling better soon!
    2. You may have posted this in previous years but do you have a roayl icing recipe you love for decorating Christmas cookies?? OR do you ever make homemade pudding?
    3. Whenever I workout its usually just any pair of leggings and a tight fitting tank or tee. I hate if im doing pushups or planks for example and my shirt is hanging down and whatnot. If im running though I like shorts and any old shirt with a good sports bra.. I wish I could wear the tanks with the built-ins because their so cute but my… body does not agree with that design :p haha

Congratulations on the new house! I hope we get a blog post of the inside! You’re my inspiration for the grey I want in my room, when you did your room post a while ago. Hope you get to feeling better, my friend is HIGHLY allergic as well and had to be admitted, it really sucks. I hope you’re able to find where you got it from and get it taken care of. Can’t wait to try the bacon wrapped meatballs. You should make a series of healthy quick dinner recipes! I’d love that!

& thank you! It’s pretty itchy and miserable right now! It’s hard to go out in public knowing what it looks like 🙁 It came from working in the backyard, so we have to get someone else to clear it all out.

Ill look into doing those dinners! great idea! xo
